The Town Fryer in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

This is the last chance I am giving this total crap place, they only do 2 flavour pies and had only one flavour available, this is a Friday, I would think this is one of the busiest nights and after being open for an hour they have only 1 flavour pie !!!as usual the chips are like eating a bag of walkers crisps. Never again the only thing they can cook is fish!!!! The rest is garbage!!!

I wanted to write this review as I felt it was only right to recognise a place getting it right consistently. We get our order delivered about twice a month, and have done so for a while. We have always enjoyed the fish and chips and share the chips as you get plenty in a large portion. Tonight we shared different things and the nuggets were proper thick chicken bites so lovely. The cod bites are great and so was the rest. Delivered on time, hot and crispy. We have never had a bad or not so good order. Always good quality and packaged well. Plus the delivery man is really polite and lovely too. Thank you for being reliable.

Honestly, I cannot see why they’re getting negative reviews, probably the best Cod and Chips I’ve had for a long while… Extremely refreshing! I went expecting the worst (as I’ve been to several Chippies before and they’ve all let me down), but this place most certainly haven’t done that. I ordered two large Chips and 2 Cod pieces. The portion size is fair and even though it is a little on the pricier side, it was most certainly worth it. The only negative I can say was the wait, which was 15 minutes, but for the quality of fish and chips we ended up getting, it can easily be forgiven!

The fish was ok. The chips were rock hard and looked like the bottom on the fryer more ended up in the bin, almost all of the box, could hardly call them chips really rock hard crisps would me more to the mark. Stopped going because the fish was rubbish, now the chips are even worse!!!

Don't get me wrong they serve great fish and chips. However would like to see some gluten and dairy free options, perhaps a gluten free vegan burger? For now half the family gets just yummy chips. Thank you

Enjoyed every week by us! The lady who serves is really hard-working, attentive, cheery and helpful. Portions are the perfect size. Chips are done excellently. We're very lucky to have this chippy near our work. Nominated for Fry Magazine award. Keep doing what you do!! :) Thank you.

This chippy Has gone downhill massively last time we had ordered my children’s chicken nuggets was raw inside bright pink. we ordered last night and I’ve had nothing but a bad belly since I’ve been stuck on the toilet won’t be ordering again that’s for sure! Not worth it travel further for better food.

Stopped by on a Friday night on our way to Plymouth to do a bit of shopping. Thought we would eat on the ferry. Our order took 20 minutes and after seeing people getting there food despite ordering after us we had to ask where our food was. Sorry, they said and then we were sorry. Horrible fish and chips. Very greasy and had an aftertaste that was horrible. It may be time to change the grease. Threw our food away and found something else to eat. Never again.

This will be a detailed review. First visit to this place which I thought I’d try despite one or two bad reviews on trust pilot. I nearly fell on my butt on the way out (my fault entirely) ! So, spoke to three staff in total, all were happy and friendly, and well organised (Covid safe) despite being very busy. Normally when I ask for plenty of salt and vinegar, I just get the same as everyone else, not this time, the man put plenty on both cod and chips separately and gave the box a shake. Seasoned to perfection, thank you. Great chips, perfect colour, a few crispy ones in there, none burnt 👌. The cod was where things got special. I fish and live by the sea, you can tell when fish isn’t fresh or has been frozen for a long time because it turns to mush quickly and has no texture. This cod was firm and flakey, cooked perfectly and really tasted...well... like cod should taste. Not greasy at all and I just about finished the portion. I’ll be back and anyone passing through should put this place on their hit list. Absolutely top

The staff are a bit variable, but the food is generally good, if not as quickly served as you might expect from a chip shop (it's not unusual to wait ten minutes for fish and chips). My main problem is that they're closed Sunday evenings, which happens to be the only time I ever want to go there.

Good again tonight. Chips have improved the last two weeks. Fish pretty good too. Long may it continue.

Eat here on a regular basis. Fantastic food and service and they use real cheese. I am a member of the Nation Federation of Fish Fryers and am fish and chip shop management qualified through them so know good food and shop management when I see it. Five stars from us!

have been using this chippy since it first opened and have yet to have a poor meal , my favourite is plaice and chips , lovely big piece of fish every time , lovely taste . all cooked fresh not left " drying out " in the warmer. top chippy in my eyes.

Usually we have the cod bites which are really tasty but decided on the chilli, chips & cheese. Perfect. A bit of a kick just as it should be.

Always come here when I’m in Torpoint and never fails to deliver excellent fish and chips served quickly and efficiently. I find their 1/2 portion perfect for me and very reasonably priced. Keep it up guys.

Have been using the town fryer for some years now and have to say the food has always been of exceptional quality & taste and cooked to perfection every time. I love the friendly banter from the staff. The portion sizes are big & good value. You can also eat in as they have a lovely seating area.

Have been here three times. My first visit i only had chips. Just wanted to try it out when i moved to the area. Tbese were actually okay. Then the second visit was awful, food over cooked and staff were very grumpy. We tried it again as we had our heart set on fish and ships and didnt want to cook. We first tried topshop up the road but were closed. Chips were refried again as was my battered sausage. It was completely inedible. Could hardly get a knife through the batter so didnt want to risk my teeth. It seems from looking at the reviews, if your a regular you may get good food and served with a smile bit if you not a local and a regular you get the opposite. Or maybe people that have said they have been going for a long time just dont know any better. Avoid.

Nearly every day after work I stroll into this place, worn out Hungary. Soon as you open the door you are welcomed in by Tony or Clair plus the other one who's name I never remember. They take your order and chat away asking how's your day been as the boxing meals up.. serving others at the same time. I now start of by saying my usual please ladies that be 6.60 please Paul. Cone of chips large sausage steak kidney pie half a gravey and a can of coke. As they put it all together knowing I can't wait to get stuck in. They place a knife and fork and a napkin on top of the box. You can eat in. You watch them fixing orders chatting to customers answering phones,all with a great big smile not one bad word to say about this place .Love the place wish they do breakfast

Second best chips I’ve had in the UK, and that’s a massive compliment as I love my chips! My wife really enjoyed them too.

Opening hours are not very good. Fish was ok but chips undercooked . Staff were welcoming. I don't understand why they close so early.

Teníamos chips grandes, salchicha y una bolsa de nuggets de pollo. Todo estaba cocinado a la perfección. Los Nuggets eran trozos de pechuga con mantequilla, estaba buenísimo y las patatas fritas eran probablemente las mejores patatas fritas chips que he tenido. Apenas y grasa y cocinados a la perfección. De hecho, mejor que la mayoría de los restaurantes sirven.

Muy a la ciudad me dio un picotazo naughtily freidora para pescado y patatas fritas anoche. Como siempre un viernes que estaba muy lleno, pero el personal era su costumbre pasan felices y el servicio rápido, era increíble. Recién pescado, patatas fritas y salsa curry era divina. Gracias por mi té precioso.

lets be honest, it isnt a patch on top shop chippy, the food is ok, nothing special to be honest. cant honestly say it was bad though, just not as good as the other one.

Cod and Chips peas staff friendly food cook at time of order.Nothing left in hot cupboards getting dry.Good portions slightly expensive.

Greasy cold, horrible tasting food, thought I would try it, big mistake, don't waste your time honestly

Went in as I live behind this chippy and thought I'd give it another go, safe to say it was a waste of time and money. Chips look as if they had been cooked all the way through once and then re cooked so were soft and greasy. I also watched them take a cooked sausage from the hotbox batter and cook it, so I ended up with a battered sausage with grease dripping out of it, wont be returning that's for sure!

lovely freshly cooked fish and chips. really friendly staff. Kids loved it too. boxed meal was great.

Service was slow, fish was wet and slippy in texture and the chips were like they were reheated from the night before. Many were dark and burnt, all were crisp with nothing in the middle. Out of a portion of chips only half a dozen were edible, the rest only fit for the bin. I won't return again, there's much better places not fat away, I'd advise anyone to avoid this place and go a little further out of the town centre if you want decent fish and chips.

Basic but friendly. Looked and felt clean. Selection and prices average. Banter between serving ladies and regulars in queue lifted the spirits.

Always a friendly smile from the staff and the food is very good. Eat in or takeaway and spotlessly clean.

Not for the first time they are serving up re heated chips from lunchtime... greasy and obviously overcooked .... almost burnt in colour.... either the staff are blind or just dont care what vile greasy re heated muck they serve up!!!!

On arrival I was tempted by the fake fire tv, although sitting next to it, the 'crackle' actually sounded like dripping water, considering I was cold and wet, it didn't help much. It was a horrible day weather wise.Ordering, I am allergic to milk, so asked for soya (my meal included a free tea or coffee) but they didn't have any, so I asked for herbal or peppermint, but they didn't have any, so I asked for plain hot water - and she said 'I'll include that in the offer as a gesture of goodwill... ,mei you ngh! How much would she have charged me exactly i don't know. (At this point customers on the table next to us leave without ordering as they no longer do gluten free, and never offered the beans and jacket they had on the menu)Meal came, ordered fish and chip special, menu was unclear what was included, it looks like you get a choice of everything, when in fact you get beans, peas, or gravy or curry sauce (so one of the four not one of each two) and bread and butter tooArrived without the bread and butter so I asked where it was, the girl (all very nice) and she said you get it with the specials, I explained we had ordered specials and then she went and made it. Oh well, one was bread and butter as the butter mashed up the bread when being spread, the other was orange, bright orange! Not butter, not food like! Eek, service was slow and I was tired of asking about stuff by now.Fish was lovely, chips underdone. Overall, I would not recommend eating in, but perhaps try the take away for the fish, skip the chips though unless you have a strong mouth, they were hard. For £17.98 I thought it was not good value for money, only giving three stars instead of one as the fish was really nice.

price was good, chips were best I;ve had in a whilethe fish however wasnt nothing wrong with the fish itself, but the batter had an almost acidic taste to it, maybe a one off will try again next time I'm down

I love this fish and chip shop I used them lots I think it well priced and there plenty to choose from

now the fish from.this place or batter sausages are to dye for really nice but I'm sorry to say the chips are never cooked enough for me. lovely curry sauce and fish is a bit pricey staff r nice and friendly shame they don't get together with the Chinese and have delivery service

This is my nephews favourite take away outlet in Torpoint, so end up having the fare when in Torpoint, good food at reasonable rates.

The chips are crispy on the outside, fluffy and light in the middle. However the cod was greasy and the batter was soggy. Perhaps a shade overpriced too.

This shop has become the best chippy in Torpoint and the food is nearly always cooked to order. Only time is the main Rush hour but the fish is always to order. Staff always Polite and the place always clean. Wish it would stay open longer.

Bought haddock and chips which were cooked fresh, both were perfect. Shop was clean (5*) and staff were nice, and it was good value. What more could you ask for. A short walk down to Rendel Park, down by the water.

Average food. Over priced. Chippy up the road much better quality. Not very friendly, slow poor service.

The food here is good the value is about average but it is cooked fresh and quickly. This chippy gets busy due to it location in the centre of the town. You can also sit in and eat. The Owner Lorna is always pleasant but some of the staff do have a werid way of dealing with customers. The fish that was stated in another review always seems fresh and is cooked to order apart from peak times. None of the food is ever dried out. Thank you for nice meals and i do go there for a meal at least once a week.

Came in this week on a recommendation and not disappointed. Friendly good value and quickly served. Very convenient to centre of town.

I see that soon people have given this chippie Afew bad points but i have no idea what chip shop they have been going to cause i think its one of the best, we come here at least once a week if I'm feeling to laszy to cook at home. I always have haddock, chips and gravy and ive never had one disappointing meal and the staff are always friendly and no what they are doing. See u next week.

The girl who took the order seem to have a attitude definately not customer focused. More interested in other customers (maybe friends of hers).The food was 1/10 - maybe the focus should be on food than what she was going to do at the weekend.

Efficient competent chip shop in centre of town. Steady trade, friendly and quickly dealt with. The fish we had was fresh and tasty. Fairly priced.

Efficient friendly fish and chips. Convenient half way down Fore Street but parking can be a hassle. Have been in. Here two or three times when using one or more of the two or three pubs very close by. Chip well up to standard and we've had no problems with fish and the rest.
