Firsty, I have received what equates to a 15% refund of my total spend after contacting the hotel...and I did raise my concerns directly with a member of staff while we were there. Neverless, I am totally perplexed at the service and standards given the reputation of this hotel. The location and grandure is certainly not matched by food and service. Another review describes a "faulty towers " experience that absolutely sums up breakfast. Absolutely astounded how inexperienced some the staff seemed. Huge expensive mistake!

I came here with my young daughter as an off the cuff let's get away somewhere for an overnight stay (we weren't staying at the hotel). As a recently diagnosed coeliac and historically an afternoon tea aficionado, I have been hesitant to book anywhere after having had a significantly sub-par experience in the Claridges for my birthday this year. I just thought, if the Claridges can't do it, noone can, I am doomed forever. Not so! This was an absolute TREAT! Sandwiches, couple of little savouries, a delicious (and warm, and soft) scone and a beautiful selection of little cakes, what an absolute delight! Service was amazing, my daughter was made to feel really welcome and was fussed over in a nice way, they accommodated my request for her to have a hot choc and scone as she would never manage a full aft tea (again in contrast with Claridges, where they charged 50 quid for hers, she ate about 4 mouthfuls as she has a small appetite). Will be visiting again, and soon! Thanks!

Although the food was good, the service was terrible.. The staff were polite but seemed totally disinterested . They started clearing away plates before all 4 of us had finished eating the canapés. We felt rushed and courses were delivered fast, one after another without a gap in which to savour the previous course. To end. we paid over £600 and then staff vanished, and we had to search for our coats as nobody was around in reception to help. We then had to let ourselves out of the hotel and drove home. I expected much better service for the money we paid.

I booked an afternoon tea for two well in advance & informed them that one person was a pescatarian. This was for a special Birthday treat. The sandwiches & savouries arrived on two plates, the bread on the sandwiches was dry & there was no vegetarian substitute for the sausage roll, just an extra fish sandwich ( Not much thought given!). The cakes did not appear until 20 minutes later, so none of the ooo ah factor as to what you would have next. Again not much thought in the selection of cakes, consisted mainly of fondant fancies (6), two macarons and two of the tiniest scones with clotted cream & jam. The cream seemed to be curdled & was impossible to spread on the scones , we sent it back twice to be replaced. When we went to pay (£50 deposit already paid), the remainder £62.50 inc 12.5% service charge, we asked that the service charge be taken off as we were not happy with the experience. We then spoke to a Manager & explained all, she cancelled the £62.50. For a cost of £112.50 you expect something of a ‘Wow’ factor, unfortunately this was sadly lacking. Tip - If you want an excellent Afternoon Tea go to The Links House Hotel, where Fraser will be the perfect host.

1887 is the fine dining restaurant at The Torridon hotel, which is quite isolated. The menu is (only) a tasting menu and changes each day. During a recent stay at the hotel, we ate dinner here once. It's something quite special to have a good tasting menu in such an isolated location. Service and presentation was very good. Prices are what you would expect for a tasting menu at a remote location.

The AA are usually pretty reliable and consistent in their ratings, however the 3 rosettes here are inexplicable and unjustified. A cynic might suspect that they may have been overly influenced by the stately and genteel surroundings of this lovely hotel, and not enough by the meal itself. The unfortunate recent trend of offering a compulsory "tasting menu" with no a la carte optíon is a lazy cop-out for the kitchen, but unfortunately this place is not alone in that nowadays. However even so, the pacing of the courses here was haphazard, with ludicrously fast followed by dreadfully slow. The really disappointing cop-out was the serving of the first three of the advertised courses, including "canapes", all together as one incompatible course on one overcrowded table. Why? There was also a certain amount of trendy wankery in the stated ingredients and descriptions. The very adventurous and aspirational menu was in part ill-conceived, badly balanced and frankly not very clever in its compilation. Not all dishes, but some. A lovely little plate was followed by something either bland or clashing, but sounding ever so adventurous of course. Dishes were inconsistent in their flavour combinations, with some very clever and delicious, some really not, and some just simply wrong. Almost as if the chef never tastes his own dishes before committing them to the menu. There was also an overall absence of starch, which left the diner a little unsatisfied at the end of the meal. However on the plus side the service staff are very good, and have been properly trained. All in all, it's well overpriced for what is offered, but it will probably always do well because of the prestige of the hotel and building.

The first time the mountains didn't give us enough time, the second time there wasn't enough staff to serve guests from outside, the third time it was supposed to work - unfortunately. The obligatory canapés were listed in the menu as starters, the starters were the size of canapés, the main course that of a starter. For the first time, we went "home" hungry and ate another sandwich. Everything tasted quite bland and boring, seafood and fish smelled quite fishy. Instead of the cattle or deer grazing on the doorstep, we were served a very, very small and tough portion of pigeon - a bird that is known as the rat of the air in Central European cities and is often poisoned as a carrier of disease. No surprise with the barely poured wines, with a little effort you can find better ones for 10 € / bottle. The white wine was always served at room temperature, but that didn't matter as a lot of time passed before the right dish arrived anyway. The sommelier dutifully recited the phrases and was even unsure of the country of origin, let alone the region. The mainly Indian staff were not at all to moderately experienced and apparently still in training. The cutlery always ended up all over the table like in a student pub, no fine dining atmosphere at all. This expensive experience ruined our holiday right from the start. We decided not to go to the hotel bar or the bistro next time. We also cancelled the planned breakfast and afternoon tea in the hotel on other days and spent the next two weeks cooking "at home".

I am not a food critic however at an enormous £100 per person it requires some constructive feedback: We were severely disappointed with the offering at restaurant 1887 and left hungry and felt the value for money was awful. Dinner: For £100 pp it was terrible value for money that only 1 of 4 dishes contained any substantial meat, which was halibut. Surely at these prices, and in the location, a serving of venison, poultry, beef, lamb or pork would be expected and in keeping with the restaurant’s ethos, but instead 2 of the courses were purely vegetarian. Amuse-Bouche: the selection of canapés were underwhelming. We likened the potato and truffle one to an old school potato smiley face/tater tot and the razor clam dish tasted only of the charcoal/squid ink cracker it sat on. The venison tartar was fine, although we felt there was too much cracker. Chawanmushi: Thought this was very odd to see on a menu in the Scottish Highlands and we were massively disappointed on arrival. What was pitched as a Japanese savoury custard, turns up to have mini florets of cauliflower and grated cheese on (not mentioned on the menu), no one can be blamed for believing they had just been served the world smallest portion of cauliflower cheese as this was the ONLY flavour there. Rubbish. Potato Mille-Feuille?: This was actually really tasty but again at £100 a head it is RIDICULOUS to offer a lump of potato with mushrooms as a course. This felt like it could have been accompanied by some protein, but we were again disappointed by the offering. Halibut: This course was nice and tasty. The presentation was also really well considered. We particularly liked the eel sauce. Minor criticism was the texture of the fish felt raw as it had only been sous-vide, and the brown shrimp added nothing. The only hot element of the dish was the halibut and the sauce, so went cold very quickly. Desserts: Both desserts were good. The final one was a bit too fussy and unsubstantial, with items such as what we assume to be a microwave sponge added for no reason. Service & Atmosphere: I highly recommend you hire an experience Maitre D’! The lack of this leader was extremely noticeable during the service, and there seemed to be no face of the restaurant - just waiting staff running around. We were served by several different waiters, many of whom appeared to be seasonnaires explaining how they would be leaving The Torridon in the coming months for other work. Most were lovely, professional and easy to talk to. We were mainly served by a French waiter who came across as over familiar and unprofessional. At one point he went into detail about how he would be seeing his family soon but how he didn’t get on with them so was not looking forward to it. He also hung around our table discussing fishing, something neither me nor my partner had any interest in hearing. During breakfast service he also had a habit of forcefully front kicking the kitchen door open like he was doing karate when his hands were full. Throughout the evening it felt as if the waiters were always there. In other restaurants we have been to their skill was shown in always being there but never being seen. Touches like folding serviettes when we leave the table to go to the bathroom are in my mind unnecessary and invasive, it’s a serviette it’ll be fine (plus I can sort it out myself). Also, we were advised that the only dinner slot available was either super early or later around 8pm, so we opted for the later booking. When we arrived, we must have been one of only 5 tables in there so it didn’t feel particularly busy. The lighting was really bright in the restaurant and didn’t provide the intimacy that you would expect of a high-end restaurant offering a tasting menu. The restaurant is well decorated and positioned with amazing views of the Torridon estate. Summary Our major disappointment was with the value for money of the meal which was abysmal. Upon entry to the hotel, we were told of the Cows (Cooo’s), piggies, lambs and kitchen garden. Of this offering, we were served potatoes, cauliflower cheese, and halibut. £100 per person was a RIP OFF. I would have given it two star but the offering for the money was terrible, not just poor. I really do hope the Chef and Owners of The Torridon take these criticisms in a productive way as the hotel and (most of the) staff seem to be trying incredibly hard to justify the hotels 5* status in such stunning scenery. Separate review of the hotel will be submitted.

The Torridon has a great deal going for it but after this last visit I don’t think we will return. The accommodation is OK but the catering is not well thought through, with a ‘pub style’ casual dining option, the Bo&Muc, or the 1887 Restaurant in the main house Wednesday to Sunday only. The former is average in menu choice and execution and lacks character, charm or atmosphere. The 1887 is ridiculously expensive at £99 for four courses - there is no choice at all, no a la carte, nothing, bar the cheese platter at a supplement of £9.50. How can that be justified when the execution does not match the cost? The Ritz has a superb lunch menu of three courses for £70 that totally eclipses The Torridon’s very average dinner offering of four for £99. It’s a shame but having toured the Highlands two years running, there’s competition out there and businesses like The Torridon need to reflect on their present offering and step up to make the necessary changes to secure a genuinely loyal following.

Myself and my husband dined here as part of our stay for his 31st Birthday. I had pre warned the hotel about my pregnancy in case of any changes would need to be made to the standard menu. We had a couple of drinks in the drawing room before being collected for our table reservation. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and tables nicely spaced out. We were handed the 4 course set menu along with some lovely cheese nibbles and bread. All food was beautifully presented and a waiter explained each dish in detail as it was put down in front of us. They kindly changed my whisky flavoured pudding for a chocolate one. A wine connoisseur was on hand for pairing as was the barman for a nightcap. We opted for the optional cheeseboard to finish which was delicious. The service throughout was superior and to a very high standard. The staff really did exceed our expectations and it was a fantastic experience that I would recommend to anyone staying with them for one night at least. It was £75 pp for the 4 courses. Cheese board was £15 extra and large wine approx £12 a glass.

Booked 8 months in advance for the Tasting Menu only to find the choice when seated was a 4 course set menu; take it or leave it. Mention of this was met with indifference. Some advance warning could have been expected. Waiting staff pleasant but struggled to remember some items when introducing them and showed little interest in finding out what 'the green stuff' was. Quality of food was excellent but main course seriously meagre. Pricing is 5 star as is quality but modern high end restaurants balance their vegetable minimalism with the meat they accompany being something more than a single boneless lamb chop, perhaps 70g max. In contrast the afternoon tea was both excellent and of a comparable quantity to most others. Overall, quality high, portions and service well below the 5 star price.

I had booked a small trip away for my wife's birthday, and had a confirmed booking for days of her birthday on the 25th July (tasting menu) at the 1887 Restaurant. Remember, I had a CONFIRMED booking - remember that bit! All appeared fine, until they rang me up out of the blue to cancel my booking.... why you ask? That's exactly what I said slightly aghast. Their answer was simple and quite lame (in my opinion) but actually two-fold. They had opened their bookings to the general public, assuming that in their words, and I quote "all social distancing would be cancelled after the 21st June". Wow I said in reply, did you really expect all social distancing to suddenly be switched off after everything that has gone on before? Anyway, to cut a long story short - they had oversubscribed their restaurant, and because I was not a "resident" at the Torridon, and only staying at the slightly less salubrious 'Torridon Estate close by - I was considered low priority compared to the Torridon residents, even though I had a confirmed booking for the day of my wife's birthday which we were both looking forward to. I was also informed, and I quote again "there was a national shortage of chefs" leading to my booking cancellation, when I really suspect it was because I was an outsider staying 'somewhere else'. I have to admit and say that this has never happened to me or my wife before, and it has left a truly sour impression on the establishment of the Torridon, it's appalling customer service, terrible booking practices and organisation and their general empathy towards my situation.I had carefully put together my min-trip around the hope that I would be staying in the area, and hopefully sampling their food, which had been so delightfully advertised by Giles and Monica. I guess the Torridon had to be on their best behaviour with the cameras rolling. It's a shame to say, but I will not darken their door again. This experience has ruined my impression of the Torridon and the 1887 Restaurant for good. Just remember folks to double check and confirm your booking if you think you will be eating there but you don't happen to be sleeping at the hotel.

In almost any sense, this restaurant is astonishing - it is hard to believe that it exists! This is haute cuisine at its best, focused on local foodstuffs, with impeccable French service. If found in London, Paris or New York, that would make it worthwhile. But being located in this remote, stunningly beautiful corner of Scotland, lends it an almost surreal dining experience. And don’t miss the opportunity to linger in the whiskey bar - if not for the scotch, then the gin or rum. I loved the feel of the hotel and restaurant. They had organised a gluten and dairy free dinner for me and I had almost the same choices as the regular customers without any allergies. My pigeon was very nice and I really loved my rice pudding desert. We had a very nice wine from Argentina which was recommended by the staff. I guess the only reason that I am giving it a 3.5 is because I do not actually remember what I had as a starter!!!

We went for the 11 course tasting menu. Over the meal was very good with excellent choice in wine pairing. Most courses were delicious. The veal tartare, halibut and the '3 ways pork' were our favourites. There was a cucumber course that was not the greatest and the slow cooked egg was a bit cold. One thing I really liked was the dehydrated/blended mushroom dust that accompanied a couple of the dishes - absolutely delicious. The menu was well balanced, had great service and I would recommend going. We thought the price was reasonable and probably better value for the tasting menu than the set menu. What we didn't love was the decor. The restaurant would be much better if they tie into the ethos of the garden where much if the produce comes from. It would make the food more exciting and add to the experience.

We dined here twice, because of a two night stay at the Torridon and found the affected french atmosphere annoying and tiresome. The food was not that good, overpriced and breakfast the second morning was of fast food quality, the black pudding dried and hard. The male server was curt, unfriendly and, well, french. From lack of other options in the area, you could probably do worse, but at least it would be with Scots.

This is a high-end restaurant with a beautiful dining room, attentive waiters, and a 3 course meal for £60. Food was spotty, with some elements very well done, and others missed the mark. The wife's baked fish was somewhat bland, and my lamb rump was cooked medium and was not very tender. The root vegetables were extremely salty. I mentioned it to one waiter and he did not seem to understand so I let it go. I will say we LOVED the Torridon and would give this place another try when we come back.

Located literally in the middle of nowhere, the 1887 restaurant is an unusual dining experience, that while not quite up to michelin star level, serves fine meals in an old world, old money, country house setting. Generally, the standard of cooking was very good.We stayed at the Torridon Inn (reviewed separately) but dined twice at the restaurant, which is located in the victorian era hotel that was previously a shooting lodge. Pre dinner drinks are served in an attractive lounge, where menus are presented, canapes served, and wines for the meal are ordered before moving to the dining room for the meal. Afterwards, coffee and after dinner drinks can be taken in the lounge; alternatively, there is an amazing bar with hundreds of malts, perpetuating the country house experience. The 3 course menu offers a couple of choices per course, but has an odd quirk, that frankly comes across as tacky: an amuse is available, but charged as an extra course that adds 10 pounds to the bill! It should have been included in the main menu, and the price adjusted accordingly. A longer tasting menu, which serves all of the dishes on the shorter menu, but with the same amuse, is also avialble. At the rear of the restaurant is an open air meat locker where home grown meats are curing; you can't get closer to the source than that!

First the good points. The food was very good, if pricey, and the lounge was very comfortable and welcoming (the building and location generally are very attractive). Now the not so good. Despite the food being good the menu was uninspiring. They boast of the local ingredients in the area, but the two main course options were cod and chicken, ingredients I would not necessarily associate with the Highlands. There are two dining rooms the older of the two is nice (ask for one of the tables with a view) but the newer one looks tired and uninspiring. My wife explained she was gluten free and yet the first course turned up with spelt on it. Despite the waiter coming back to check after we had placed the order whether we were having the three or four course meal they incorrectly served us the four course meal. They also got the bill badly wrong. Whilst we were paying at the front desk one of the other guests came up to ask why their wine had not been served, indicating both another service error and a lack of serving staff in the dining room requiring the diner to leave the dining room to raise the issue.

Having read the recent reviews here on Trip Advisor, and compared them to some from 2015 and 2016, we join enthusiastically with this spring's group: The Torridon 1887 is performing at a very high level. Both the food and the service reflected great care. Each dish was beautiful, scrumptious, and creative. Clear, vivid flavors and extremely fresh ingredients were a great pleasure. The people serving were all gracious and knew how to present a meal elegantly but without being in any way stuffy or unfriendly. They knew their food, their wine (a broad and very well chosen list, fairly priced) and how to give their guests a first class dining experience. The gentleman tending the bar is a whiskey wizard with an encyclopedic knowledge of his amazing inventory and generously shared his knowledge to help us find a good choice from the vast (382 last night, but who's counting) collection. We stayed at the Inn and before dinner we walked through the huge picking garden of herbs, vegetables and flowers. Lovely, and a clue to why the food tasted so fresh and delicious. We would return in a heartbeat.

We stayed for two nights and very much enjoyed the experience. The dinner is limited to a Set Menu, with two choices, for starter, main and dessert/cheese. Although you can opt for 4 courses or the 7 course Tasting Menu (at additional cost). The prices are £50, £60 or £75 respectively, I must admit that on the first evening, the Menu on offer, would not have been our first choice, but all dishes were well cooked and presented, The staff were super efficient and delightfully welcoming. The wine list is excellent and not over priced, with not a huge mark up, sometimes associated with similar high end restaurants. The second evening was much more to our liking with several "starters" of exquisite taste and texture. Followed by wonderful Tortellini, then Halibut and a nice selection of Cheese. A very pleasant experience. Our thanks to Aaron, Simon, Rosie and all members of staff. All of this in a wonderful setting, using the best of Scottish produce.

Having stayed at this hotel many years ago, we decided as we were in the area to pay another visit for dinner.Just trying to get an aperitif was a job in itself. The waiter spoke little English. I asked for a G & T and he asked what gin I would like. I suggested Tanqueray & he went off to see if they had it. He came back and asked me to spell it! Then he produced a drinks menu with a whole list so eventually we received the drinks. The restaurant was pleasant. The other guests around us were all Americans on a gourmet trip we understand. And this explained the menu. It is very restricted, but this would not be a problem if the dishes were less mundane. The main course choice was either cod or chicken. Maybe I'm spoilt, but I eat these foods on a regular basis. I was hoping, given the prices here to have venison or halibut as shown on the sample menus on the website. Dessert is either cheese or the dessert of the day.My husband spoke to the Manager (?) whilst on the way out and he said the people on the Gourmet Break had different dishes every night as part of the package, so if as a non resident you book for dinner, you really need to ask what will be offered that night. To me, this is not a restaurant in the true sense of the word as it is set up for residents on a specific package. You are merely interlopers for a part of it. We did not find it good value, although the food we had was tasty and the cheeses were good.

We thought the food presented was all of excellent quality though the daily menu offered a very limited choice - fish or rabbit - and one of us doesn't eat fish. However we couldn't fault the flavours and quality. The bread was excellent - so good we had seconds and that was quite filling but worth it!At the hotel for two nights we ate at 1887 once and I think that's the way we'd keep it when we go back (i.e. eat there one night and try the Torridon Inn for other nights). It's remote here so dining options quite limited. We didn't particularly mind the constant description of the food as it was presented but in some instances it was difficult to understand exactly what was being presented. It did seem a little over the top but is clearly a Torridon thing. The great news for residents is the quality of dinner is passed onto breakfast - it was definitely the best breakfast we had in the Highlands by a long way (we were driving the NC500).

If you’re taking the boat tour on Loch Ness this is where you’ll catch it. If not, it’s still a great pit stop to shop, have a bio break, grab a cold drink (or sample some gin!) and browse the shops. Surprisingly affordable souvenirs here. Stop won’t take long unless this is also your hotel… not sure of value or pricing on those. Great views of the Loch. Be careful of the very busy highway!
