The Tollgate - Sizzling Pubs in Barking and Dagenham

My partner and I went for drinks & evening meal. We were greeted with friendly smiles. Which was very much appreciated. Service for drinks was very smooth. Then we ordered food a bit later. Had to change one part of the meals, as an item wasn't available. Which was done very efficiently. Not a problem at all. When food came out it was hot & enjoyable. We both emptied our plates. Although the Onion Bhajis I had could have been a bit more crispy. Other than this one issue, not even a problem. Our evening was very enjoyable all round. Will definitely be going back there again soon & more than likely, more often now.

I have been going to this pub for around 4 years now when I take my 3 dogs to the groomers a few doors along and have a meal while waiting. This time I noticed a change in the service and the food I ordered was outstanding. I noticed the difference in service and the standard of food served and when asked, the proprietor said that he had taken over the business just last week. To my mind a vast improvement………excellent, 10 out of 10

Nice atmosphere and very friendly staff

We had to clean our own table as all tables were covered in glasses. We ordered food and drinks on the app and after 15mins had to go to the bar to get the drinks as var staff didn't even look at tickets. Then waited about another 25mins or so and kitchen staff cane down and said only 1 steak left. Then after about another 15mins or so barman came over and said there was no fish fingers or chicken dippers for the kids meals my daughter in law had ordered 10 mins before I had ordered. So we asked for a refund and the inept barman couldn't process it so had to get kitchen staff down. We only got refunded for the food when if we knew no food available we wouldn't of ordered the drinks which we flat and not very good. We were extremely disappointed and will never use one of your pubs again.

Andrea the manager is amazing,had dinner and she was in the kitchen food came out quick and well presented

Food absolute 0 Customer Service -0 I ordered with my friends a stake they had on the menu, when it arrived I literally couldn’t cut it with knife how bad that was, it was so chewy that even with stake knife wasn’t possible to cut that thing. When I told to waitress about it she didn’t even bother to offer anything else, In fact she was quite upset!Honestly I wouldn’t even take it. Bland and dreadful food. The only good this was that pint of Guinness which you really can’t go wrong with it. What a waste of time and money!

We were always regular customers of the Tollgate but havent been there in over two years as we found it had gone down hill. We thought we'd give it a try tonight and was pleasantly surprised the food was lovely and steak cooked to perfection by the chef Dan .we well definitely be using the Tollgate in the future on a regular basis

I love a Sizzling Steak but my wife was not keen so she intended to have a Hunters Chicken. We don't go out that often so it was to be a treat. When I went to order I was told they no Grilled Chicken available. This is the 4th consecutive visit where they cannot meet their menu. Previously Salad, Onions & tomatoes were unavailable. It's a busy area with large & small Supermarkets nearby. So they could have easily cheaply bought Onions & Salad. So I ate alone and we had to cook when we returned home. I reported this to them & received a prompt reply asking I give them another chance. After reading reviews it seems a common problem with this venue. So don't promise yourself anything from the Menu when visiting the Tollgate!

Very good Sunday afternoon pub, food presented well and nice quality. Service excellent.

Excellent service, brilliant atmosphere! Met the new manager Andreea and her team is managing the pub so well, busiest I've seen the tollgate in a long time. Food is perfect, staff is amazing. Couldn't ask for a better spot to socialize!

Everything was fantastic. Nothing needs to be improved. Allison and Andreea were excellent at making our visit amazing.

Popped into the Tollgate for a coffee, with my brother and sister. Prior to a meeting, ordered 2 coffees which were instant coffee, no problem with that, waited 10 minutes. Went to bar to remind the barman, said he'd do it straight away, then he began doing something else, it wasn't till an older lady told him to get us our drinks, that eventually got us served. The locals were friendly as were the staff to be fair, l would use again but not for coffees..

Came to the tollgate with some friends for their birthday and I cannot put into words how lovely the staff are, got introduced to the new manager Andreea and she has some of the best customer service and leadership i have ever seen. Food was incredible, and the jukebox makes the night even better. Great company and even better staff!

Always come down the Tollgate for a few drinks, lovely pub. Wanted some food yesterday and the boss Stacy shifted a few tables around to fit us where we wanted for some grub and I couldn’t have been happier. Great quality and lovely service

Visited here for some food and drinks with friends, the service was outstanding and the food tasted absolutely delicious. Stacy is doing a brilliant job making this pub better for that visit, she is always welcoming and always makes sure everyone is looked after. Keep up the great work Stacy you are a true asset to this pub.

This is my local pub and its great. Stacy the new landlady is amazing g and have worked hard to torn the pub around. Food is really hkd and great prices, always hot and sizzling. Shame we don't have much entertainment but Stacy is trying. Will recommend this place to all my family and friends as is really is a good night out.

Very poor food also a very long wait for food and when it turned up wasn’t very hot a food missing from plate side dishes turned up when we were leaving and had to remind them what we ordered when they came out with the food, we will not return under any circumstances very poor

Great atmosphere as soon as you walk in staff are smiling and they greeted us on arrival, beer garden had the sun beaming on it which made the cold pint more enjoyable!!

I always use this pub as a stop off when I wait for my dog to be groomed next door. I usually have a meal and soft drink. Food is lovely and reasonably priced. Staff are very welcoming, polite and helpful.

Careful with car park i didn't ceck details about car park and receive Penalty Charge cause you can not park on this poor location!

Plesent place to be and wonderful food and if your passing by or even just looking for something to quench your therst in this hot weather or fill that empty spot of hunger then pop in its worth it

Tried both the Breakfast & Daytime Menu (All together 9/10), the food is lovely, decent portion sizes for the most part & the price isn't too bad. 28/05/2023 - After trying the breakfast menu the other day thought I'd try the daytime menu, starters were a decent portion size for the price & tasted quite nice (Cool Original Nachos, Salt & Pepper Mushrooms & Onions Rings) also got Cheesy Garlic Bread but that was just okay... for the mains the Gammon Steak was 10/10, Fish & Chips 7/10 would easily be a 10 if it had more chips... the Hot Dog however 3/10 the size of it for the price is a big no, the microwave hot dogs you get for £2.49 in the shops are bigger & you get 2 of them, I will say the hot dog did taste very nice but can't justify spending nearly £10 on it... £7 or Under would be perfect... overall I'd give 7/10 I do think I prefer the breakfast menu. 26/05/2023 - Breakfast stuff was very nice & for a decent price for the portion size too, highly recommend Bacon and Maple Waffles & The Big Breakfast.

Ordered rump steak. Their offers seemed great, but they never had much in stock. Reluctantly ordered the steak, it was chewy and tasteless I only ate half. Waste of money. Staff friendly shame about the food.

We were there for food at 8pm and they said the kitchen was closed early without any apologies. I had been to many other pubs but this pathetic service i didn't get from anywhere else. The shop is supposed to close at 10 pm on google but the take away will close at 8pm and eat in will close at 9pm.

New breakfast menu is amazing! Family friendly too.. My wife is a vegan and They even had vegan friendly options

Very friendly staff and manager Martin is a very good fit friendly helpful and Jayne the chef is amazing

First, getting into the parking lot (and out again) is a nightmare. Second, we were the only people with a food order and after 25 minutes of waiting had to ask if our order was actually being cooked. Third, the restaurant itself is accessible only through the bar, and on the early Friday evening (6pm) it was loud. To be fair, the food itself was okay and the staff were friendly; this just didn't make up for all that wasn't just quite right. Average Pub/Eatery.

Really nice place to have a beer and a steak. I asked for my steak medium rare and it was cooked to perfection, beautiful. Compliments to the chef. My mum was really happy with her jacket potatoe. The kids burgers were tasty and great value. Will be visiting again soon.

I had dinner with my daughters, my youngest has allergies and I even managed to talk to them about what food was allergy safe, Martin helped me pick out something that I knew would be safe to eat by providing us with a tablet to check on and Billy cooked us our meals. They tasted amazing and my daughter loved her food too, and she is a very fussy eater!

Waited along time for food kids got bored when the food came the steak was no cooked to how we asked we asked for medium and it was very very rare but the out side was like charcoal I'm sure the staff realised when we left with our plates still full. Won't be returning

Had a great time on 30 december even though liam wasnt working he looked after us all day/ night

When i was last at this pub I noticed how there was one member of staff Billy serving on his own with a large queue, but I ended up really concerned as when he left to go get food from the kitchen a patron seemed to go behind the bar and help him self the tills and drinks. I asked around a little and found out it was an off the clock staff member Liam helping themselves to the counter! Normally this sort of thing wouldn't bother me but because of him going behind the bar it kept causing issues with us being served and slowing down our service! Feel sorry for Billy having to work around the arrogance of course workers thinking they're above other patrons and actively stopping him from doing his job throughout the night. It didn't help that the group this Liam was with was loud and annoying and you would think being a worker there he would know how to have some respect for other customers and not cause disturbances the entire night with his own speaker playing music! Absolutely no respect for anyone at all

Came in today and was really taken back with the excellent service I received. I ordered a meal and food was outstanding and arrived on time, staff was very approachable and friendly and the whole pub was very clean including the toilets, highly recommend to anyone, will definitely be visiting again

Very disappointing experience, we wanted hot drinks but the hot drink machine was broken. They didn’t have what we originally wanted so had to choose something else. Waited about an hour before our food arrived. My partner had ordered the fish and chips but the fish batter was greasy and the dish made her feel unwell. On the upside my vegan burger was satisfactory despite not being what I wanted originally. Would have the vegan burger again although they were skimpy on the chips!

Not been for a while, but had a great time here last week, new management, alongside a fab meal and great new staff! Will be back!

We tried to come for food here a few times this month but the kitchen was closed both times. Came today and theres a new manager, Kitchens open every day and the food was great and such good value. Tables have a permanent stickyness but we were told they are being replaced asap

It's so nice and cosy in there. Lovely clean bathrooms, wonderful staff. No kids after 9pm just in case you were planning on bringing them.

We went for a quick family dinner, Chloe served us and Jess cooked our food. I ate here before but I think the kitchen set on fire, and the chicken I ordered wasn't seasoned jerk. I got the chicken platter, my son for the hit chicken burger(can't remember what is called). Their bbq sauce is amazing btw. We got brownie and make your own sundae for dessert. They said they have a new manager now and the place seemed a bit more cared for. The staff were helpful and kind plus they spent about 5 mins trying to get the kids toy machine working for my little one who had her £1 to spend on the machine. They don't have full day pepsi on tap but they do have bottled Pepsi which is cheaper than the full fat coke. It's alright in there, they need new decor and tables were proper sticky but the staff said they were fixing the place up so we will defo be back.. other customers were friendly and even gave my bubba another quid for the machine. The football came on but it was still a nice atmosphere. Didn't get rowdy.

The food was good and the staff very good

Very long wait for food. Run down place with sticky tables. Food itself was good and staff friendly and polite, hence why more than one star. However, despite putting our number plate into the machine as we entered, I received an £85 fine a week later from Euro Car Parks for not being authorised to park. Have had to mess about appealing and submitting a bank statement showing payment for our meal.

Great helpful staff, food amazing and reasonable prices

I always order the buttermilk Italian style chicken when visiting the tollgate, however tonight was the best it had ever tasted. I asked to compliment the chef and was delighted to meet Jane Hockling. Thanks Jane it was delicious 😋

I was served by a really cool guy named Billy. I forgot my phone at the bar and he kept it for me. Also greeted by a lovely customer, who also spoke favourably of the establishment. Billy could do with with a bonus or some acknowledgement of his lovely attitude and honesty. Thanks Marlon
