The Tilbury in East Hertfordshire

Great experience start to finish. Most of us had the beef roast, which was delicious. The beef, Yorkshire, roast potatoes (amazing), veg.. delicious. Service was IMPECCABLE which I find really hard to come by. Every single person was friendly, informative and welcoming (tops marks for staff). Will definitely be returning to taste the week day menu. Highly recommend.

Food was good, some of the meals very good. Exceptional service by any standard, very welcoming and professional. Cute enough place but interior design could generally do with an uplift .. well worth a visit.

After hearing great reviews of this pub, my friend and I decided to visit for an evening meal and were not disappointed. The service was great and we were put at ease and made to feel welcome. The battered halloumi was 10/10, I was just disappointed I didn’t have room to try desert. Looking forward to coming back, I’ve got my eye on a Sunday roast!

I don’t think an hour and a half slot for Sunday Lunch is over generous at the best of times but when you get told bang on the hour the table will be required back in 15 - 20 minutes, it really ruined the experience for me. On arrival We ordered straight away and didn’t even have starters. Getting three courses in to this slot would have been near on impossible and would have been very rushed. We were told a spot may be available at the bar to eat dessert if needed…. I probably won’t return because of this, which is a shame because the food is always spot on. Disappointing experience.

Very disappointed. Have been for Sunday lunch before and been impressed. Regrettably, 6pm on a Saturday was disappointing. Wine prices are disgraceful. My lager was rubbish, and lacked any fizz or flavour. £26 for a pork cutlet and a few extras was expensive. The burgers looked ok. Our bill for 4 mains and 4 drinks was over 130 Won't be going back

We have just had the most amazing meal at the Tilbury. Our second visit. We were seated and immediately attended to. We were able to discuss our meal choices with our waitress who explained how things were cooked and presented and then helped us to choose. Our meal did not disappoint. The pork was cooked to perfection and the whipped mozzarella cheese starter was incredible. The sommelier was knowledgeable and assisted with a perfect wine to complement the meal. A friendly, unpretentious setting with a five star menu. Well worth a visit.

When speaking to both brothers, they both believe that presentation has its place, but the priority for both was exceptional flavour, which they massive surpass! The menu is a sensible size for the venue. It's a local pub AND restaurant. My hardest decision was which to pick. Starter was a Gazpacho with real definition of flavours and stunning ingredients. Main was Wagyu beef with delicious vegetables and unquestionably, the most astonishingly flavoursome carrot puree I have ever tasted! Dessert was a honey baked custard with blackberries. I had a mocktail of rhubarb and custard flavour with a relevant sweet pinned to the glass. Service was superb. Both brothers are great, knowledgeable, and deeply passionate about their venue and it's servings. Toilets are clean well appointed. I travelled 58 Miles, mainly on the M25 which took over 2 hours due to an RTA was the whole experience worth the awful journey. God YES. I rarely ever return to a venue as I want to experience more places, but I have to say this place is quite exceptional and after nearly 2000 reviews and 120 michelin stars, without doubt really memorable with excellent interested and lovely staff. Kudos to all.

We visited with family and was blown away by the food we thought it was excellent, i wish i had taken pictures! but the other reviews are better photographers than me! highly recommend

Celebrated a birthday with 28 friends and family, with a barbecue lunch served in the Tipi. Food and service was excellent, and everyone was extremely impressed with both the food and friendly but efficient service. Many thanks to the Tilbury team!

Wow! Where to start. From the outside it is very humble but once you go inside you feel like you’re in a mitchelin star restaurant because of the food and the service. I can’t believe how well we ate that night for such a reasonable price. On top of it Adam, our server, was just incredible. We had such a lovely evening and can’t wait to come back.

Very disappointed. Three of us ordered the wild Sea Bass. I expected to get a whole fillet at least. What we got was a quarter of a fillet each with a small portion of potato salad and a stuffed Courgette. This cost £29.95. The skin on my fish was burnt and I found 3 bones in my fish . As for the Courgette, it was neither stuffed or cooked properly. Unacceptable. As one of my friends said. I have not been here for a long time and won't be coming back anytime soon. He complained about his fish and chips as the portion was as small as my Sea Bass. They removed the tip which I think was the least they could do.

Came back to the Tilbury for a celebratory meal with my husband and daughter. Staff were friendly and attentive. They were also very knowledgeable about the food; taking the time to explain the cut of the Wagyu steak as well as the suppliers of the meat. Food was beautifully presented and tasted wonderful. We will be back, cannot rate it high enough.

Recent visited to watch a singer in the garden. Great atmosphere, staff very friendly and food was incredible they had a bbq night!

Lovely lunch , and great service

We had a double celebration today. It was our 54th wedding anniversary and my husband finished his radiotherapy yesterday. As always the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The food was up to it's usual high standard and we thoroughly enjoyed our whole meal.

Absolutely amazing evening, food was fabulous, staff were phenomenal and so accommodating. Didn’t have a table booked for the live music, but they sorted us out and were so hospitable. Highly recommend this pub/restaurant and their lovely staff. Definitely coming back.

Fabulous food and drinks at the barbecue themed tasting menu last night. So much attention to detail made it such an amazing culinary treat. Found some new wines I loved and the clear pina colada is my new favourite cocktail. Staff all superb

While we frequent The Tilbury's sister establishment - the White Hart - we visit here for their seasonal tasting menu from time to time. Food is always excellent. It's clear to see that the brothers take huge pride in their work, and it shows. The personal greeting from the team when one arrives adds a special touch. The tasting menus are often accompanied by a wine flight. Portions are generous and wine continues to flow. Well worth a visit!

I visited here for a roast dinner on a Sunday afternoon. The service was fabulous. The restaurant interior is beautiful and very comfortable. The cauliflower cheese was amazing! The rest of the roast dinner was fine, nothing to write home about. But overall I definitely enjoyed eating here and would return for the cauliflower cheese alone !

Visited on the off chance for Sunday lunch after out original venue choice didn't meet expectations. Despite being incredibly busy we were warmly welcomed and were able to get a table in the teepee. Not a standard roast lunch menu in this area, as was BBQ style. We had a sharing platter. Good value. Steak was slightly chewy but that was the only negative. The service was impeccable. Will definitely be back!

Wow wow wow! What an awesome spot. The best roast I’ve ever had, awesome wine list, amazing service, everyone was genuinely enjoying themselves all with great vibes. Loved the teepee, inside was cosy and outside was so lovely. Can’t wait to go back!

Nice pub with good food from what we tried. Staff were friendly and welcoming. We sat outside in the teepee as it looked like rain and it was a nice place to eat. The main menu is available in the pub and just outside and there is a bbq menu in and around the teepee. A nice place for a summer drink and meal. If we are in the area we will visit again

Excellent gastro pub with a truly packed full of flavour menu. As a vegetarian I have really enjoyed everything I have eaten here including the coliflour soup and the halloumi. The decor is tasteful and the staff are incredibly friendly.

By chance, two of us popped into The Tilbury for lunch on Easter Sunday. We thought it unlikely that there would be a table available on one of the busiest days of the year, but as we were sadly turned away we spotted an empty high table by the front door and were graciously allowed to stay. I am so glad we were. Our lunches were memorable for two distinct reasons, the food was truly splendid - the cauliflower coup, the roast beef with all the trimmings or the fish with humongous chips, and a wicked cheesecake. In fairness it has to be noted, yes, the prices are London prices. But it also has to be noted that the food was far better than most London restaurants….and worth every penny. Great tastes, massively laden plates, wonderful memories. And secondly the staff were fun, keen and happy - you believed they could turn their hand at anything - who knows what next? Riding for GB in some foreign land… or whatever. They were all first class from the manager to a first-time waiter. Highly recommended. We shall return…

Made our first visit to this lovely pub a couple of Sundays ago, and have to say that we were nothing but impressed. We were welcomed warmly, and served a drink while we waited for our table.The staff were chatty and happy, which always adds to the atmosphere ,and soon enough we were seated.Although perfectly nice, we preferred another area,so asked if we could be moved.No fuss or face pulling, just politeness, and within a couple of minutes they had us comfy at a table we were happier with. We passed on starters for the roast ,and we had the pork option and also chicken .What we though was such good value was that all the veg was included, as well as a dish of cauliflower cheese.This is often an added cost.Everything was really tasty (and hot) , but a special mention must go to the carrots and the cauliflower cheese...truly lovely. We managed, just, to share the Banoffee Choc Trifle , which was also cracking. The wine was really lovely too, and the gent in charge brought over the bottle for me to snapshot, and I have already bought some online. We will be returning at our earliest opportunity,and would recommend without any hesitation. BTW, we never felt rushed at any stage to finish our meal.Thank you,and see you again soon.

A wonderful combination of good and plentiful food combined with a friendly welcome and excellent service, well deserving of a five star review. Compliments to the chefs who were still turning out excellent roasts on Mothers Day late in to the afternoon to a full restaurant ! Fantastic Saturday afternoon lunch with my family to celebrate my fathers birthday. Really lovely food, a really eclectic menu, something for all tastes, your traditional pub food of fish and chips, burger and steaks, but also a few different dishes to tempt the more adventurous diners. Well worth a visit.

Food was absolutely delicious! I could eat the chicken in 40 cloves of garlic everyday, unreal! The Sunday roasts were delicious, big portions… the cauliflower cheese incredible. The staff were fantastic as well. Can’t wait to go back to try more of their food.

Service was excellent, welcoming and very attentive staff. Food was second to none, the Tilbury burger was one of the best I've had (and I've had a lot!) - certainly at the top of the Hertfordshire burger list. Atmosphere was great, buzzy in the main dining room but not so much you couldn't hear the conversation. Excellent wine list. A real neighborhood gem and will definitely be returning

Furious we haven’t discovered this sooner! My partner and I have had The Tilbury on our ‘eat list’ for shamefully the last 5 years. We finally at here last night for Valentine’s Day and our only complaint is we haven’t been sooner! It combined all of our loves. Cosy pub setting, incredible quality produce, unbeatable flavour, top wine list (with actually helpful advice) and Non pretentious service. It was an absolute pleasure to eat here and to be hosted by James and his team. Thank you! We are definitely going to look at your upcoming wine dinners! We first visited seven years ago and it has remained impressive since. The Tilbury has been a go to for a treat or to mark occasions and it is consistently high quality. The food is truly superb with impeccable balancing of flavours and incredible attention to detail. The children's menu is excellent too. The staff are knowledgeable and welcoming. I would highly recommend. Our most recent visit this evening was no exception and I look forward to an excuse to dine there again soon.

Nice roast but an hour and half not enough time to order wine, meal and eat it! Refused dessert or coffee as they needed table back. Ordering was late . It was like a factory assembly line. £139 for one course x 4 plus wine is not cheap for being rushed out. Won’t be returning!

We have just enjoyed Sunday lunch at the Tilbury. The food was excellent, the vegetables and meat were perfectly cooked. Our son said that the roast potatoes were better than home-cooked! We will certainly go back.

We came to The Tilbury to celebrate my nephew’s birthday. We ordered from the Christmas menu. The roast turkey was amazing, the vegetables and cauliflower cheese was delicious. Wow, went here for our anniversary meal before going to a wedding reception and the food was AMAZING. really shouldn't have had dessert but just couldn't help it. The service was spot on and the restaurant itself was really nice, sounds strange but tables were nicely spaced, so you didn't feel like you were eating with the next one over and that really makes a difference. Will definitely be visiting again

This was our first visit to the Tilbury and we were all greatly impressed by the food which was slightly different from the norm but was delicious so a new experience which we love. Service was excellent and we must make special mention of Molly who was exceptionally knowledgable about the food and cheerful throughout. We will certainly be back!

Ventured to the Tilbury for Sunday lunch. We'll worth the visit. 3 roast dinners that were exceptional and the beer battered halloumi fries which was scrumptious. We also had the lovely calamari for a starter. No small plates of food here, ample helpings for the hungry. Great attentive staff, very helpful and extremely polite. Yes it's a little pricey, but we came away feeling we had excellent value for money. Great venue!! A great quality restaurant in a pub setting. Absolutely nailed it!

If we eat out locally we often end up at The Tilbury as we find it is the best pub in and around the Welwyn area. Always have great food and service and it is nice to see the owners take a hands on approach to running the place.

Hour and a half for your table is not long enough. We only had 15 minutes left after our main course and was told that we would have to vacate the table for the next booking. We could sit outside what would you do if it was raining. It’s all about getting in more sittings, more money.

The best Sunday lunch. Roast beef is superb, served pink and really tender . Roast potatoes are fab and so is the cauliflower cheese. Totally recommend 5 stars

Went here recently for a Sunday lunch and we pre-ordered our meals due to the size of the group. Once everyone had arrived, the starters came out within minutes and, once starters were finished with, the mains followed soon after! We were all really impressed with how quick the service was and how incredible the food was, so props to the chefs! The service was just as good - the wait staff were all very friendly and attentive! Highly recommend this place :)

Nice place with an ancient interior touch. In back garden, in summer time, can sit down outside and enjoy your meal. Staff is friendly, food delicious, service great 💯👍 i definitely will go again for dinner 😉

We love this place for a Sunday roast. The best part is you get cauliflower cheese with your meal rather than a side dish. you must pre book though to save disappointment. we have the chicken nuggets (they are a posh version) and the bread...

Gave The Tilbury a try after researching a decent venue for a milestone birthday. The food, service and ambience were all spot on to make a memorable evening. Well set-out tables so, although the place was buzzing, we didn't feel crowded. The menu was nicely...

Been here a couple of times for family gatherings, end jan 23 most recently for dinner- food was great - note that the food is much more geared towards gastropub than stack it high and sell it cheap. I cannot fault the food. Lovely. There is a selection of drinks on tap and a variety of gins available if that's your thing. Off street car parking

Lovely, creative, Food. Lots of different choices and flavours. The Asian pot noodles in dish I had weren’t great but the steaks were amazing. I would say mains were great, desserts were ok. Not great value for money. The steak sauce which was pushed on...

We had a group of 12 friends. We were looked after royally in a separate section of the pub, and it felt like private dining. Service was excellent, efficient and friendly. Food was good but not outstanding and certainly quite expensive, but we knew this...

Loved this place, great find 😇😇😇 Staff all really professional/nice, food exceptionally good, fun and busy atmosphere. We were a table of 5, and I don't think one person had a single bad dish? Or to put it better, all dishes were amazing. Portion sizes were big (and certainly without compromise which is often what can happen with larger servings), and was a really nice atmosphere. Personally went for the Gurnard fish dish since I'd not seen it on a menu before and it's often a very disregarded fish to cook with, so I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be so good! Not really much more to say other than "definitely go". Would advise booking (seemed really busy when we went on the Sunday). Kid friendly. Nice quaint pub area for drinks too.

Great Sunday roast well worth the money

We went for lunch and it was so delicious. I recommend the carrot bhaji and the pork tomahawk both very flavoursome. My daughter ordered the chocolate brownie for dessert and it was moist and melted in your mouth. My cappuccino was perfectly made too.

Amazing food and service, real attention to detail on the food, rump steak tasted like fillet steak, chips were too die for. Amazing all round food and passion for taste.

Wow what an Amazing Roast beef Sunday lunch. After reading other reviews we thought we would give theTilbury a try and we certainly were not disappointed. If your looking for good quality food at a fair price based on size of meal then you won't be disappointed. The staff were friendly and welcoming with a traditional pub cosy atmosphere. The service was outstanding.

Utterly fantastic. Driven past many times and finally found the time to book. What a lovely place and atmosphere, far removed from a typical village pub and much more on the brink of fine dining. Staff were so welcoming and friendly and the food was perfect. Will definitely be returning, thank you.

This is my favourite restaurant! My husband and I love an evening out here. All the staff are lovely and the chefs are great! I have a few allergies and they are so helpful making adjustments to a dish where needed. The food is superb 👌
