We stayed here for two nights for our wedding. First class service, excellent food, beautiful rooms! Love this place it’s an absolute gem. Thank you for everything ❤️

Delicious, high quality food. Lovely staff-very friendly and professional. We came to celebrate a friend’s birthday and had a delicious brunch and ended up staying nearly three hours. I’ve eaten here a number of times and always have the same great experience in a lovely atmosphere.

Made a short notice booking on a sunday after the in-laws' boiler turned their home into niagra falls and they arrived at ours with 3 under 5's and a dog I've never seen eye to eye with at the best of times... It quickly became obvious there wasn't quite enough room at the inn, so with deep sadness in my heart I made the ultimate sacrifice and legged it. In a previous life I spent the best part of 2 decades in hospitality, from pubs to wedding venues to cocktail lounges in Mayfair to golf clubs to soulless mass catering, and bit takes more than good service to get me on trip advisor. Well, these guys managed it without even seeming to make an effort, which is how you know you're in a good spot. The 15 min train journey home with nothing interesting to look at in my media feeds provided some impetus as well... Really thoughtful redecoration of what is clearly an old site in a really nice location in the boho bit of Hertford. A ridiculously comfortable mattress with enough pillows and cushions to build a fairly sizeable fort or cave with the kids I had cheerfully abandoned earlier on. All the basics you'd expect: water hot, but not critical mass hot, fluffy towels, tea making facilities which actually allow one to make a decent cuppa, biscuits which aren't made by lotus (next time you nibble a free lotus biscuit have a look round the venue and see what else has their logo on it). The butler's room with fridges, chilled water, real milk in small bottles and more of those biccies is a nice touch. Complimentary continental breakfast was more than adequate - possibly the first time I've I've ever said that - and served in the bright and airy dining area. I didn't use the bar but I stuck my head in and it seemed like nice a place to get outside a few ales. Staff seem friendly, well presented, and calmly professional. Especially when you leave your bag to collect later, then go back because you left your wallet. Then go back again because you left your phone when you went back for your wallet. As it is operated by a pub chain, albeit a smaller and quite nice one, one could be forgiven for expecting a kind of 'blandness' here. The Salisbury Arms is certainly not bland, it is decent value for the price point, and as my train pulls in to the station, I would definitely recommend 😁

Fabulous overnight stay. Room was great, fantastic facilities and very friendly staff. Dinner was amazing and we complimented the chef. Breakfast was the best we have had in any hotel! Would highly recommend.

A delightful hotel with exceptional staff. Food was amazing (dinner and breakfast). In my opinion deserving of higher than 3* rating. A couple of minor problems were quickly resolved without issue. Friendly, accommodating staff.

Called in as walk-ins looking for some lunch on Sunday. Greeted by a super friendly young lady who immediately welcomed us and took us straight through to the restaurant and found a table for us. We both went for the Sunday lunch options, I had the pork and my partner the roast beef. We can both honestly say it was the best meal we have had in a while. Everything was cooked perfectly and we were offered extra vegetables at no additional charge - amazing! Can’t recommend enough. Never visited this place before and it was lovely inside. The bar area was very busy but also looked well appointed. We will be back at some point as it would be worth the drive! Thank you!

We stayed here for three nights with friends whilst visiting family and friends. The place has undergone a refurb and has gone with the dark heritage colours that are on trend at the moment, whilst this is cosy in the bar areas it can make the rooms very dark. The rooms are not the biggest and certainly did not need a 6ft plastic plant in the corner of the room, nor the others that were dotted around. Most of the staff were very friendly and the hotel is in an excellent location close to restaurants and shops. We didn't eat in the restaurant but the continental breakfast was more than adequate.

We visited the Salisbury recently to see what it was like after its refurb. Having lived in Hertford for years, and visited the Salisbury a lot - we had high hopes. Unfortunately, we were really disappointed. Having arrived, we were told we only had the table for an hour and a half, despite booking. We were served by a young lady who had dirty jeans, dirty hands and her hair was all over her face. We ordered a main course and a drink as we thought that would be quick as we didnt feel very welcome. I ordered a burger and chips and a large lemonade. The price of the burger was 17.50 so again, I had high hopes. The burger was small - smaller diameter than a cheap McDonalds burger, and I turned my small bowl of chips out on to the plate. I counted 9 chips in total and two of them had black ends and were hairy. It was extremely disappointing. If you intend to charge 17.50 for a burger - it needs to be a good portion and not served up by someone who needs a bath. Do better Salisbury!

Didn't stay in the hotel so can't give feedback on the rooms. But I had a breakfast and a lunch there and both were excellent. Recommended.

This is my favourite place to stay in Hertford. It has a warm, relaxing and homely atmosphere. Good food and wine, and nice rooms, I’ve stayed in a few now and they are all good quality.

I've been eating here regularly for over 45yrs, seen all the chains come and go but the Salisbury used to be the best place in town, especially if you wanted a bit of old world charm and traditional English cuisine. Sadly, since the refurb it has become almost indistinguishable from anywhere else. The staff are still pleasant but unless you want to eat overpriced food in a noisy atmosphere then it is not the place for you.

A really nice building, and we had a really nice shout at each other over the table. The music is too loud and too intrusive. The staff say they can't control it, so I'd recommend going somewhere else with better ambience.

Awful food - lukewarm, tasteless, over-priced. Loud music which apparently cannot be lowered despite another couple also requesting the same. Young staff simply said write to management - we hate it too! This venue was a favourite for decades but since refurb has gone downhill my a mile. Such a shame. Will not return.

We had a work Christmas meal here and it was very good. It was on a Saturday; so the place was busy, however it has a great atmosphere and food/bar service was still pretty quick. The food and staff were very good. Overall a good experience.

Booking on line was easy and quick and great to have confirmation of booking with information. Check in was so quick and met by a friendly member of the team. The room was excellent with everything you need and want for a short stay but think I would happy to say for a week in it. Value for money is up there with the best.

We eat here regularly- it's more polished than it used to be and I do miss the simpler old menu. But after a few mediocre/poor meals since the new more up to date and expensive menu was launched after the second recent refurb, the place seems to be finding its feet. Recently had a celebratory meal which was great- risotto, pork belly, sides all great with excellent attention to detail. Also the kitchen made a dessert for us which wasn't currently on the menu because it's my partner's favourite, and couldn't have been more accommodating :)

Excellent birthday lunch, with options beyond the usual Sunday Roast, decent wine and very good value. Our server, Becky, was attentive and informative.

Five of us went for Sunday lunch today . Upon booking we were informed that our table was allocated to us for 2 hours - perfectly ok I thought .We often eat at McMullens pubs with the same time limit and have never had a problem.. Service today was extremely slow. We sat with our dirty plates in front of us after the main course for at least 20 minutes before they were cleared. Dessert then took a long time to be served so I assumed that we would be allowed more than the 2 hours . I WAS WRONG , before we had even finished our second course we were told that our 2 hours were up and that we couldn't have the table any longer as it had been rebooked.It was not our fault that the service was so slow that we were unable to finish a 2 course meal within the alloted time slot. This is totally unacceptable and we definitely won't be returning there again !

No complaints about the food it was very good. We went for a Sunday lunch. Lovely Hotel, lovely lively atmosphere. We only had 2 courses and you are told in your confirmation the table is yours for only 2 hours. We were told very abruptly after our dessert we needed to vacate our table. We said we wanted coffee and were told we’d have to go in the bar. We asked if there was a table and we were told no. Just as well we only had 2 corses, if we’d had a starter we wouldn’t even have finished our main corse before being told we needed to vacate the table. I pointed out that service had been very slow. We’d waited ages for our main corses. When they arrived food had been left off, we had roasts. and stuffing had been left off which we had to ask for but worse than this when I said a Yorkshire had been left off one pork meal I was told it was the gluten free meal, however the non gluten free meal had requested gravy on the side which had been served. We then had to wait ages while they checked to see which meal was gluten free. It took about 45 minutes from ordering to being served and starting our meal. We then waited ages for the table to be cleared. Most of our time at the table was waiting for food. We did explain and said we wanted coffe, however we did say ok please bring the bill. We waited for the bill and eventually half our party got up to leave. I went to the till and requested the bill again to be taken to the table and again said I was very disappointed with the service and the way we were asked to leave. The young man did say they were trying to make a table available in the bar for coffee, which was very much appreciated. The members of our party remaining at the table had to ask 4 different staff for the bill before it was finally delivered to the table. In the time it took we could have had our coffee had the service been quicker. We had really been enjoying our meal until being asked to vacate the table so abruptly. If they are going to put time constraints on tables they need to up their game in service to ensure a full meal can be eaten. As I said before we only had 2 courses. Strangely 2 tables near us arrived before us and were still on their dessert when we left. They were not asked to vacate their tables. We were hoping to go again for a meal later in the year but sadly unless they up their game service wise we will not be going again. Such a shame as it started off well.

I paid out a lot of money to stay at this hotel last night, had a bloody awful night to be fair and honest, with continuous noise through the night I couldn’t get any sleep, I wouldn’t give it a one star, I would give it zero, I would never stay here again.

We stopped here for breakfast at 8.30am on our way to another destination. Dining room was warm and welcoming with a fire at one end of the room So lovely on such a cold day. We both ordered the signature breakfast which was perfectly cooked and delicious. Good quality ingredients. Couldn’t fault it. The member of staff who looked after us was friendly and efficient. Definitely recommend.

I was staying overnight..Check in receptionist helped me with my case as there is no lift.I had an upgrade to Kingsize room..The bed was comfortable but room very cramped as a huge pot plant in the corner ..claustrophobic actually..I dined down stairs..no waitress came ..they were all on phones or chatting to receptionist in lobby.I did get served eventually when I went to ask what the procedure was.I ordered the sheperds pie which arrived lukewarm and tasted like a microwaved ready meal..not homemade on premises as,advertised..that is for certain...no accompanying veg either.Very overpriced and substandard.

Stayed here for a birthday treat in the delux King room and was over the moon with the whole place. Its a beautiful building and an amazing room. The staff where all very friendly and helpful. Right in town so great for nights out in Hertford. We stayed on the top floor and the room was very quite.

What a lovely hotel, great location and beautiful accommodation. We stayed here for the Xmas Market and just loved it. Great food, great atmosphere and the staff were superb throughout.

This was our 1st time to Hertford. We chose The Salisbury Hotel due to its location to an event we were attending at The Corn Exchange. A beautiful hotel with lovely bedrooms. The staff were polite and friendly. The food was excellent. We will definitely stay here again if visiting Hertford in the future. Our only slight negative was the car parking arrangements which was nothing to do with this hotel. We parked at the Car Park on Gascoyne Way. We had to get up before 07.30 every morning to put money on our car because there was no other way to pay for a few days together.

Great boutique hotel. From the first contact to book all the way through the stay the staff were exceptional. I rate rooms on a few things, the showers and the beds mainly. Water pressure in the shower was insane, bet was very comfortable. Some street noise in the morning but not a lot as it’s a bit off any traffic routes. Dinner was very good, bar atmosphere was nice and the breakfast was 5 star. Will be back.

Visited for Sunday lunch and was excellent as usual. Roast beef was so tender and excellent Yorkshire puddings and cauliflower cheese. Daughter enjoyed her Goujons. Staff were great as always. Looking forward to the next visit

Stopped here on a Sunday night as I had a v early start with work.Has to wait 15 minutes to check in, despite the friendly gent behind the bar saying someone was coming (I had to ask him 3 times) When the chap eventually turned up to check me in he wasn’t the most friendly person & I felt like an inconvenience (think I disturbed his cigarette break out the back hence not being around to check me in) A very nice waitress pointed me in the direction of the high st as food service had finished in the hotel (8 pm) and the chap behind the reception was pretty blunt on this front with no help on other options ie Hertford Room clean and okLooked like a overly place to eat, Shame I was too late as would have enjoyed an evening meal in arrival ...

We have taken our 12 year old granddaughter for lunch here before, she loves their burger and chips. Because of her age we have to eat in the lounge bar. It is an old building that is supposed to be haunted, so she is intrigued by that!

As a party of 15, we had an excellent lunch on a Saturday afternoon. This is proper chef-made food, not served from a packet and the difference is obvious. The Salisbury also tried very hard to offer Vegan options, which is appreciated. We were left to get through our meal at an unhurried pace, though the staff were perfectly attentive. Excellent.

We have eaten a few times in the last six weeks (and many times over many years before!). On recent trips both in the evening and for Sundar lunch we have sat in the bar area and every time we have had incredible service and delicious food. Orders are taken at the table and the team are always there to give friendly advice on what to choose. Great fresh food, generous portions, and a good price. It’s a real pleasure to visit!

Had another amazing meal. We shared chicken strips with chilli dipping sauce. The batter was gorgeous. Hubby had slow roasted lamb shanks and I had prawns and scallops which were cooked to perfection. All washed down with lovely malbec. We were looked after by the lovely Tibi. What an asset to The Salisbury. Hope to be back soon

We have been here many times for drinks and meals. Always a lovely atmosphere and good food and service. The roast dinners on Sundays are particularly good. Very highly recommended.

Have eaten in the restaurant many time’s over the years. It’s always been amazing great service and great food. This time it was not good. I wanted to go somewhere for a good steak and there are not many places in Hertford where you can get a good steak so I thought The Salisbury. The steak was so tough I couldn’t eat it. My husbands was slightly better but still chewy. The young girls serving were lovely girls but not once during the meal were we asked if things were ok with the food it was only when we had finished that they came over. The restaurant used to be a step up from the bar but not now. It’s a shame and hopefully it was a one off but it was my birthday and I was looking forward to a great meal. We did get 20% off the bill but that doesn’t make up for a spoilt night.

I recently booked a table here for 10 of us and from the start the lady on the phone was so helpful and lovely and booked that in for me. And on the day we were served by the fantastic Jenifer, she answered every need and went above and beyond to help us all afternoon. We will 100% be returning not only was we looked after well the food was amazing. I have to eat gluten free and the menu on offer was brilliant I was spoilt for choice. And I had a choice of pudding (syrup sponge - I recommend to anyone!) Can’t wait to return. Thank you for a wonderful afternoon.

Three generations of us but just four people in total took a window table in the snug bar. usually one has to go to the bar for service but on this occasion for whatever reason we received attentive service from a staff member. We each had a different meal and all were good,

24th December we had a Christmas breakfast for my birthday. I wanted to treat some friends and wanted something different. The breakfast and service was excellent and the table looked very inviting along with Christmas crackers. Plenty of coffee. We all enjoyed the morning.

Went again for Christmas Day and the food and service was spot on. Food was piping hot my only criticism is why do you put mange tout on a Christmas dinner? Looking forward to returning again next year

We go here fairly often as we know the food is always good. Our last visit was fine and the service was much better than we've experienced before.

I went for dinner in the back bar/lounge. There was a two course special which i took. the fish and chips were OK but probably arrived too quickly for something which was not lifted out of the freezer.

I tried the sunday roast and was not disappointed. The beef was delish! The waiting staff are brilliant and service was quick, despite being pre warned that the restaurant was fully booked so there could be a delay. I will certainly be returning.

Dined in the restaurant recently, for Sunday lunch. The service was good, by the friendly staff. All our food was served hot and was very tasty. Would highly recommend, especially if you like traditional places.

Went with a friend for afternoon tea. It was exceptionally good pots of tea, a variety of finger sandwiches,cheese scones followed by scones with jam & clotted cream. To finish home made cakes completed a very enjoyable afternoon. The staff always friendly, service very good Would certainly recommend and go again.

We decided to go here for a Sunday roast due to the reviews on TripAdvisor. The actual hotel is simple stunning. The place was packed out with people having lunch. I decided to have the roast beef and my partner had the pork. Everything came with a very nice selection of vegetables mash and roast potatoes Yorkshire pudding and cauliflower cheese on the side. The beef was the best I have tasted anywhere. The whole dinner was delicious and very reasonably priced. Will definitely be going back.

A pleasant place for a light lunch or a full meal at a very reasonable price. This is a very old hotel and is a quirky building but service is reasonably quick and there are 3 lounges to chose from.

Staff always friendly, service always great, For special occasions I would recommend the back restaurant also large parties, it is a lovely area to eat. Food is great at affordable prices without skimping.

My mum stayed here after we had been to a party further afield. Mum left without her phone and we knew she would be completely stuck without it. I phoned the hotel and Sharon was really helpful despite it being past midnight and reception not being open and she very kindly let my mum know that we were going to bring the phone to her.

Stayed one night when visiting relatives. Our room was small but had everything we needed and clean and tidy. The shower was excellent. Only a quick visit but everyone made us feel welcome.

Popped in for a drink and to hear the excellent music from a young singer who sang an amazing wide range of songs. Absolutely fantastic.

Had lunch in the "back bar" Its less formal than the restaurant and has a genteel feel about it. The food is very good and the service laid back.

After a little confusion about whether the restaurant was open or not (we needed to eat fairly early) had a very pleasant meal in a relaxed atmosphere. Now offering vegetarian and vegan options.

We stayed one night here en route elsewhere. The gentleman on reception was friendly and upgraded us as we had spent our wedding night here 31 years ago!! We had the cooked breakfast the next morning and the service and food were excellent.

Its an old world in great location in centre of town and had parking. Rooms were very comfortable and bar was nice and staff very efficient and friendly. I would certainly stay again.

I love this hotel - my 5th visit. I base myself here for a few days when I visit from Australia and want a few days seeing London’s sights. It is olde world charm with all that you need for comfort and topped with great customer service. Clean, comfy, lovely bars, nice food in both the bar and Cromwells Restaurant. What more could you ask for? Love it, love it. See you next year

The food either in the bar or resturant is absolutely fabulous! I have never had a bad meal. It has a very friendly atmosphere. A great place to meet friends for a cosy chat or a family get together which I have done over the years many times.

Had a wonderful meal in the restaurant. Home cooked English food at restaurant standard and was superb. So glad to see the steak and kidney pudding back on, and the steak and ale pie my daughter had was also excellent. Lovely crumble to finish with first class customer service too. Will be back very soon.

Hotel in a great location in the centre of the town. They hotel has a private car park operated on a first come first served basis.

The food was average; cheese & pickle, ham, egg & smoked salmon sandwiches along with cheese and plain scones. Cheese scones were tasty but everything else just average. This was followed by a selection of cakes and tiny fruit scones. The cakes didn't appear to be hand made and lacked flavour. The scones were the smallest I have ever seen and we had to ask for cream and jam to have with them. Only 1 scone per person so we asked for more (No extra charge for these) and when they arrived they were warm as if they had been heated up in the microwave. We had to ask several times for our tea and coffee to be served. After eating our savoury items, the waiting staff removed our plates and knives. We then had to ask for more plates and knives when the cakes arrived.

had a superb meal with my wife and daughter tonight. Excellent meal, service, and a wonderful ambience to die for. The only slight niggle is the lemon swirl cheesecake lacked lemon, and needs a bit more zingy, zesty taste.

This is one of our favourite restaurants, we have never been disappointed with the food, service and ambience. As the oldest restaurant in the area it tends to attract an older clientele and we like that!!! Our Fried Brie Starter followed by Grilled Salmon and finished with a delightful Ginger Sponge ticked all our taste preferences. Well worth trying!

Love this place for a relaxed Sunday roast. It gets busy so best to try and avoid between 12 and 1pm. But we'll worth a visit.

Came here as I’m vegan which means I tend to choose the venue!! Lovely food (I had the pasta) and my omni friends enjoyed their meals too. No vegan dessert which was a shame, but luckily I was too full for that anyway! Quaint dining area. Worth a visit!

Enjoyed a delicious midweek rib eye steak. My partner had a lighter sea bass fillet. Both meals served hot and presented well. A ginger sponge with cream finished off a lovely and fairly priced meal.

We always eat in the bar, table service by wonderful waiters, food is lovely, freshly cooked, and choice for non meat eaters.

They have changed pricing for rooms etc, and now breakfast is extra, although the room price is still the same as when breakfast was included. New Years Eve meal has also increased by over £10 a head, so it looks like we may look elsewhere. Shame! As we’ve been going there ( not just for new year) for around 15 years.

Well what can I say I have going to this place for the last 7 years and it get better and better every time I go either for a couple of pints or to eat as in fact to night my wife and I are going again.Super food good service price reasonable. This is the 3rd year we have gone here for a Christmas Breakfast with friends. Before you think you have to be staying at the hotel, you don't. Just book and come along. Start off with a Bucks Fizz on arrival, fruit, a cooked breakfast of your choice then delicious Danish pastries. Plenty of nice rustic toast, coffee and tea. Along with a Christmas cracker, what a lovely start to the day. The table was set beautifully and the staff were most friendly. We weren't rushed either. Just so different. Can't recommend it enough. Thank you.

The food was good, the service was very good, atmosphere was fine, lot of elderly people having lunch, is restaurant and a hotel. Just pop in and I've got a table, so is nice to last minute eat out in a cozy and clean place.

We booked the upstairs function room for our anniversary celebration. They couldn't have been more helpful with the planning and made some constructive suggestions. The event was really well organised and the staff were friendly, professional and efficient. The food was very good and everyone had a great time.
