The meal was average at best. The Yorkshire pudding was too dry and crispy and there was not a lot of gravy. One of the party had gluten free fish and chips but the fish was just a plain bit of cooked fish so really bad at catering to gluten free, especially for the price.the sticky toffee pudding was good though. Had to pre order and the service was still really slow. One of the staff was rude to me when I said we had been told there was custard available. I wouldn’t rush back here, which is a shame as I had heard good things about it.

We visited the Tickled Trout for our anniversary celebration. We stayed overnight and ate our evening meal in the restaurant. The evening meal and breakfast was outstanding and the service was also very good. We had several issues during our stay but the General Manger ensured we left satisfied so thank you for that. We will definitely return for a meal in the future.

Fantastic Sunday roast in a lovely country pub. The pub was really busy and had a great atmosphere. We had lamb and beef, both cooked perfectly, and the veg was equally well cooked. We have eaten here a few times over the last few years and it's always been good but they just seem to have raised their game the last few times we've attended. This probably explains why they get so busy now. Also an area that's dog friendly is a bonus.

First time I have been to a Balfour pub. The food was ok, but the service completely unexceptional. There was only a table of three when we arrived (later another group of three came, then a two over two hours) so not busy at all, and yet we had to wait for everything. Ordered a bottle of water to start and then never asked if we wanted a drink again. It took ages to clear our plates away, or for anything to happen really. Just felt like an after thought. Would not recommend or return, or bother with another Balfour Restaurant. Quite simply if you want to look like an upmarket restaurant you have to provide attentive professional service.

After knowing this was lovely many years ago we decided to go for a family lunch. We arrived early and ordered drinks whilst awaited the rest of party. It then took 35 mins to order a drink at the bar as the staff hadn’t yet turned up for shift or didn’t know what they were doing. We finally sat down for our table and we’re told they had run out of menus and would be back.15 mins later no menus so I asked and they said we had pre ordered. After speaking to the team and realising that they had muddled us with a later family that had preordered they brought us menus. It had now been 30 mins since we had seated and we had an order taken. Another hour to get the starters out of Camembert, bread and pork bites. The breads were stale and just heated to a crisp in an oven.. mains came out 15 mins later these seemed a little better but no staff came to ask if all ok etc. we decided we wouldn’t go for puddings as we had now been here for so long. We asked for the bill never came. Asked another waiter never came 20 mins later I had to go and get the bill myself from the bar. I get you could be understaffed but I think on observation staff needed more hospitality training and awareness. With one on bar and two staff on front of house and it wasn’t overly busy this should have been done with ease if competently trained.. Would I return again or recommend??Unfortunately not.

We visited this restaurant on a Saturday evening, we were surprise at how empty it was, unfortunately we found the food to be average at best, the starters are small portions and overpriced. For main I had the trout which was cooked nicely but the noodles didn’t have much taste and the vegetables were just warm and dumped on top of the noodles and tasteless. The desert was microwaved. The staff were all very young and appeared to be inexperienced, whilst they were polite they didn’t tell us about the changes on the menu or that some sides were not available until we ordered. We were asked if we wanted water for the table it didn’t arrive, and I ordered a 2nd glass of wine which also didn’t arrive. We went to the bar to pay as no one came to us, and when we mentioned the 2nd glass of wine had not been served they said they didn’t know what one I had had before so didn’t bring it. This was the first time of using this restaurant for many years and we thought we’d give it a try, we won’t be returning.

Disappointing lunch at The Tickled Trout today. My wife's burger and chips was cold and had to go back to be re-heated. When she got it back she said it was bland. My sole was a small portion and was served on the bone on top of the potatoes, under the veg. It should be served filleted or if on the bone then should be served next to the rest of the food so the bones can be seen. Or at least the waiter should mention it is on the bone. I didn't realise it hadn't been filleted until I got a mouthful of bones! It was dangerous. My sister had Roast beef and said it was good. The main waitress/bar manager was surly. The rest of the staff were ok.

We visited for Sunday lunch. Staff were friendly and efficient. Car parking was easy. We both had Sunday roasts. Quality was mixed - the sides of Pigs in Blankets and Cauliflower Cheese were very good, roast potatoes were average - not crispy enough and a big stodgy. Unfortunately the roast meat itself was disappointing- the roast pork was too thin and was really no better than school dinners. The beef was worse - very overcooked and dry and not a great piece of meat. We had one dessert, the chocolate brownie with miso caramel, which was good. There is a good selection of wine - including most of the Balfour range and the overall price is reasonable

My husband said it was the worst fish and chips he'd ever had. I had pea and mint ravioli which was bland. We had a very nice bottle of local rosé.I definitely would not go back to eat. We had breakfast the next morning which was very nice but they'd run out of milk so no lattes available.

Had the most delicious meal on Saturday night. We arrived to a warm welcome by the barman which makes all the difference, then seated into the restaurant by him. Our order was taken politely by the waitress and our food was served shortly after. We started with the pea arancini and the cauliflower and cheese veloute. We both had the pan seared salmon for main which was absolutely delicious, with a crispy skin to die for! Finishing with the rhubarb creme brulee and ice cream. It was such a treat to have fresh food served on hot plates. We can highly recommend and will definitely be back. Thank you. 😊

We had came on a Sunday, lovely weather and first tables to sit down great open space for kids to play whilst still being able to see them. Had some lovely local sparkling rose wine, great chablis & lovely single malt whiskey recommended by the waitress. The key elements which I would say are in need of attention, are the fatty beef cuts we got for our roast. I was still left hungry after my food but the potatoes were good, as ordered extra. The first time I came for roast years ago it was lovely. Probably wouldn’t order a roast again. The kids meals looked great and fresh.Altho the Eton mess for adults was the same size as the child’s, and not much of a Eton mess,More a sample size which I did question but thats how it was served for £6.50 wouldn’t say the desert was good value for money. Although the above food shortfalls, it didn’t ruin our experience because the service was attentive & the environment made up for it. Will definitely be returning very soon.

We are local to the Tickled Trout and wanted to try it for the first time having seen mixed reviews online. So, the food was very good as was the service. What this venue lacks is atmosphere. It has a bit of a 'canteen' feel to it in the main dining room. I firmly believe this is all down to the lighting. Lighting changes the whole ambiance to a venue. The spotlights are far too over the top making the room too bright. In fact, I was sitting facing one and was nearly blinded by it! We asked the waitress to dim the lights which she kindly did but they could have been turned down a lot more. More lamp, less light! The music is also lacking. Music and lighting are a winning combination. Not loud music, something suited to the environment and clientele (mainly couples on a Friday night). So nearly there! Just a few tweaks and it will be a great venue.

I recently called on the Tickled Trout at short notice to hold my wedding reception when the latest COVID guidance meant we could no longer have the 30 guests we had planned at our original venue. I met with the manager with a week’s notice and he kindly agreed to host the event for us and separated off part of the venue for us for this purpose. The food and service were excellent and they did a fantastic job at getting the whole place looking lovely and like a wedding. The majority of the guest stayed after as well in the hotel rooms the pub also provides and had a much needed breakfast the following day. So thank you Tickled Trout for helping make our day so special. We will certainly be returning in the near future!

Never visiting again. We were seated and the waiter left to go get menus - from where we met him. Could he not have brought them at the same time?Almost threw the menus at us and left, giving us no opportunity to order a drink. He left us a for a good 5 minutes before coming back to ask about drinks.By then we had looked at the menu, but didn't know what the pie or soup of the day were.Turns out, neither did the waiter! He left again to find out, but when he eventually returned he only told us the soup, we had to prompt again to find out what the pie was.I ordered soup and pie (curried lentil and steak and ale, to save you having to find out from the terrible waiter!) and my husband had tiger prawns and steak. The food came promptly, his prawns were fine, my soup tasted like chip shop chinese curry sauce. Excellent bread and butter however- if we were forced to go back we'd just eat bread next time. Our mains came, my pie was ok, but only a tiny dribble of gravy. His steak was well done rather than medium rare, grey all the way through. We would have sent his back and asked for gravy to be added to my meal, but at this point the waiter went missing, and as we were very hungry we ate. Lucky for us as we didn't see the waiter again until we managed to flag him down to pay after waiting in our coats for 5 minutes, wallet in hand!Never again!

Never again! A hour before living our house for an anniversary date my booking was cancelled by restaurant! I called to check hoping that it’s just misunderstanding only to find out that “they are not really sure why”. I have talked to two people to hear two different versions of a story, first one that it looks like I booked it for earlier that day (not true, I have got email confirming my booking) later on someone else was trying to explain me that it must be “a glitch in system”. Very unprofessional!!!P.s. You have overbooked, it happens. Don’t give me story... hire staff that can manage walk-ins, telephone and online bookings (from your website).

We are locals of this pub and enjoy walking here whenever we can, but we really wish the owners/management would stop trying to make it like a bistro pub and simply run it like a village country pub with a menu that has more than half a dozen choices on it and food that arrives in a more presentable fashion for the money being charged, such as including a side salad with the burger for £13 instead of an empty looking plate with just a burger and a small pot of chips on! The gnocchi I had was delicious but more of it please for £13. We went to another village pub the following day and the contrast to the tickled trout was clear - they had a menu with all pub classics on, so much choice it was difficult to pick one! £10.50 for a burger that came with salad, a pot of relish and a pot of mayonnaise. We would visit the tickled trout more if the menu was better and either the prices were lowered or the portions were bigger.

We visited this week with our family for dinner, however we won’t be revisiting. From the start it was a shambles. We booked a table for 5 that was confirmed on the phone from a member of staff & we supplied a email address, however when we arrived we was told nothing was booked and were have to sit outside the front, very frustrating as another family had the same issue too that come in after us. (not ideal) But anyway, it was the manager (we believe) attitude that will make us not want to return. With COVID - 19 we are all well aware of social distancing however we was getting told off left right and centre. “Don’t go through this door, don’t stand here, don’t do this, don’t do that “ screeched at in front of other diners... “not to stand (well over 2M ) from the person in-front of me as people will be passing. However you have to order here to place your order at the bar! - however the staff are perfectly fine to pass you, the manager was not screeching at then across the bar! Was very confusing and quite frankly embarrassing. There was no signs in or out on the doors! Just foot marking inside that actually do not make sense. However we certainly do not go out for dinner to be treated like children and rude service, we have used the eat out to help out scheme to help these restaurants! Will not be returning. (May I add all the other waitresses/waiters was very nice) but because we was left out the front we was forgotten about and still had plates on our tables when our deserts come, even though several staff and managers walked past us.Food was nice and presented well. ‍♀️

This was our first venture to eat out after lockdown so real didn’t know how it would work. Immediately we arrived, having previously called and reserved a table, we were put at ease. They invited us to use a clever mobile App to select our food, but as I hadn’t bought my mobile in ( we prefer conversation) they gave us a run down of how ordering and service would work. It was very easy and the menu offered a lot of choice for us vegetarians. The food was exceptional and great value for money. The place was busy but we felt safe and valued. We will definitely be back to try some of the other menu options. This is a smart, clean friendly place, ideal to meet family and friends now restrictions are lifting and ease yourself into the “new normal”.

We visited today for a birthday lunch as my youngest daughter was 17. The menu is currently reduced due to the restrictions in place however, everything we ate was fresh, very well cooked and tasted awesome. The gipsy tart was great, especially with ice cream. The setup to allow for social distancing is well thought out and the staff were very welcoming and knew what they were doing. Our first visit to the Tickled Trout since change of ownership, but will not be out last

If you want to go to a restaurant that is clean and friendly then look no further. We visited on a Saturday afternoon, the restaurant was spotlessly clean, lots of hand sanitisers, menu was small but perfect formed, food was prompt and delicious, the waiter checked with us when we wanted our mains, as we had a starter and also had a small child with us. We will definitely be going back !!

I visited the Tickled Trout on Saturday with my husband after a little walk down at Teston Country Park. From the minute we entered the pub to the minute we left we couldn't have felt more welcomed.Due to the Covid-19 situation we have been very unsure on whether to visit any pubs or restaurants, but we are extremely happy to have visited the Tickled Trout for our first meal out since before lockdown, and definitely will not be our last visit. The extra precautions which are taken make us feel very comfortable, with hand sanitising and track and trace sign in. We sat outside due to the lovely whether, the garden is very well presented with social distancing mesaures taken seriously. We ordered our food which came out quickly, with amazing presentation. Myself, I had the fish and chips which was full of flavour and lovely crispy chips, and my husband went for something a bit different to usual and had the curry which he said was the best curry he had eaten in a very long time, overall the food was delicious and regret deciding to not have a dessert!! The tickled trout also have rooms which you can stay in, this will be something we are going to look into on our next visit, which will be very soon.Thank you again, we look forward to next time.

As a regular visitor to family in Maidstone I usually book the premier inn in the town center. I booked this place for a change and also as I preferred a smaller venue given the COVID situation. From the moment of booking to the moment of check out I had a 5* experience. The manager (Oz) takes a personal interest in every aspect of the place and it shows. The pub is well run (even with the restrictions), the location is beautiful, the food is great and the rooms are way nicer than the generic room of the larger brands. I highly recommend the Tickled trout for food, drink, lodgings and an overall relaxing experience.

Gastro-pub in a beautiful part of the Kent countryside. The food was absolutely delicious, we stayed in the pubs boutique style bedrooms, had dinner and breakfast twice across a lovely weekend. Oz was an absolute superstar making us feel welcome, helping us out whenever we needed and it was a pleasure to eat and stay here

Being strangers to the area, we called in today at lunch time. Lots of cars on the car park so assumed it to be busy. Bar empty!, and no atmosphere. Asked if we were going to eat I made the rapid decision to look at the menu first. Given that it was lunchtime there were no bar snacks or light lunches, only full rather expensive mains or a choice of 3 sandwiches. My husband who is very keen on his real ale had the choice of one. He was given a taste and had to suggest that as it was warm maybe it was the first pint out. The bar man did offer to pull off a pint and after he had it was in fact very nice and not too expensive. My wine however was the cheapest on the limited list at £7 for a 175m and it was not good. So a pub with no atmosphere, no choice of real ale and no bar snacks cannot call itself a pub. Continuing on our way towards Tunbridge Wells we passed the pub which we probably should have used.

My girlfriend and I really needed a decent lunch and The Tickled Trout provided it! We had the specials; beetroot/goats cheese risotto and beef steak sandwich with chips. Both very well cooked and presented. The standard menu looked equally appetising. Our drinks (wine and beer) were excellent. And on top of that was the “ambiance” and service. It has a modern interior but extremely well designed. The staff/management are brilliant. Knowledge about the food and wine being offered and friendly without being obsequious. We are definitely going there again. Hopefully with improved weather so we can sit outside!

My husband and I went here for Sunday lunch, we were very disappointed with the food , we ordered the Lamb and Pork roasts which came within minutes of ordering them a sure sign that the potatoes would be like bullets which they were .The waiter after asking which meal belonged to whom then proceeded to give us the wrong meals, unfortunately the meat was so tasteless it took us a good few minutes to realise we were eating the wrong meals. We did complain and they were very apologetic and offered us free desserts , we ordered one dessert between us which was the Gypsy tart which was horrible under baked and grainy. They also have a distinct lack of good beers( I know its run by Hush Heath) but surely you should cater for all tastes. The food is not cheap and you could get a better meal for half the price elsewhere.
