Excellent pub serving good beer with quality live music.

Traditional pub retaining the olde worlde atmosphere & character of days gone by. Staff were friendly and welcoming and there's a selection of real ales on tap as well as the usual beers & lagers.

Wanted the Goulash soup but both times went in had sold out so we had the burger and chips and chicken curry both really nice, good service very friendly and a bustling atmosphere.

A lovely traditional pub right in the centre of York! We go to the pub every week for the pub quiz and we always have the best time. The quiz is fun and has various different themed rounds to keep everyone engaged. The staff are very friendly and the pub has a lovely atmosphere. The food is very nice as well, especially the burgers. I would definitely recommend popping in for a pint or even better attending the quiz on Wednesdays!

Although this pub is very small it is well worth a visit the staff are nice and friendly and there is a good range of beer and cider to chose from

We go in here every time we are in york great pub always full. Their loaded nachos are second to none.

Love this Pub, like stepping back in time

Proper old British pub located close to city center. The building of The Three Tuns is historical and the pub itself is as British as possible. Old wooden interior, fun decor on the walls, dimmed lights, lovely and chatty people and servers and good beer and food. A visit here gives you a good insight into proper British pub culture.

This place was absolutely heaving, but the service was still fast, happy and professional. Order cheesy chips. Again a really quick service.

Absolutely love this pub, the landlord and all his staff are amazing and work so hard, great ciders and beer and live music. They were very accommodating for our large group of vikings during jorvik festival week

The Three Tuns is it a cosy old traditional pub. There is an excellent selection of draught drinks, including hand pulled cask conditioned real ales. The ones we sampled were in excellent condition. There are no bar games. I haven't tried the food, but the menu looked very tempting. The staff are very welcoming and the pub is dog friendly.

I was alone in York and needed a nice place to kill time before a late afternoon train. Couldn’t have chosen a nicer spot. The staff were so lovely and the atmosphere was cosy. I just sat in the window and read my book, eating some food and having a pint or two.

Somos una pareja de 52 años que estuvimos en York para un regalo de Navidad de nuestros hijos. Intentamos entrar en The Three Tuns y el portero se negó a dejarnos entrar (19 . 45 ) . No hay razón por la que se ofreció. Luego procedió a asaltar a mi compañero y solicitó la asistencia de otros 13 matones (personal de la puerta). Los 14 arrancaron y golpearon a mi compañero, mientras lo sujetaban al pavimento. Me agredieron, tiraron mi teléfono a la carretera después de darme cuenta de que los estaba grabando como animales. La policía llegó y solicitó imágenes de CCTV del pub... ¡había desaparecido! ¿Qué coincidencia eh? Este pub es conocido por este tipo de comportamiento aparentemente. así que evite a toda costa.

52 year old couple having a nice day out in York. Went to enter this pub, stopped, for no reason by bouncer. He literally assaulted my partner and called for about 13 of his bouncer/thugs to assist. 13 of them booted him and had him pinned to pavement and would not let him go. Assaulted me, smashed my phone into road. When police arrived the CCTV from pub had ‘gone missing’ !! Good job there is footage from elsewhere! Apparently this pub is renoun for this type of behaviour. Avoid like the plague

Proper old pub full of character, be careful if your tall the ceiling is quite low. Beer was nice.did have a portion of chips paid £4 something for them they were ok but had better. Did see some food coming out of the kitchen & that did look really nice. Staff very friendly and helpful, will definitely be calling back when we next visit york

Got a taste for pub grub? This is your place! Lively, cheerful and excellent. Honest fare for real people. I think we were the only obvious tourists. The surrounding tables were all locals: couples, young people and small groups of friends obviously enjoying themselves. You order at the bar. Service is prompt. The beer is fresh. The atmosphere is happy. Did we order fish and chips? Of course. (We were tourists, after all.) The haddock was nicely breaded, the portion—amazing! When you’re done with finding frou-frou on the restaurant guides, just come here. Can you tell we enjoyed our lunch? Um…yes.

Great little pub with a super cosy atmosphere! Popped in with my partner when visiting York and enjoyed the great selection of beers and lagers available. If you ever visit we definitely recommend the fish and chips, they were our favourite yet!!

Great little pub in York for Live Music! We went on a Friday night and the singer was great, good atmosphere, loads of drinks to choose from and friendly staff. We stayed in all night.

We came into the three tuns on a Friday night quite late one evening looking for somewhere to eat, and this place did not disappoint- food incredible, the staff are absolutely amazing and the musician was on point, we only came in for a quick bite but ended up staying til the end! Next time we are in York city centre we will absolutely visit this hidden gem again!

Amazing pub! Popped in for lunch and had the BLT sandwich which was delicious! A lovely range of drinks to choose from and the staff were very kind and helpful. Definitely worth a visit!

Great pub that is like Dr Who's Tardis. I like my bitter and the pints were great showing that they are looking after three ale and lines. We also ate there and had a couple of changes to the advertised menu that they accommodated without any problem. Food was very good with lovely crispy batter on my fish. If you are in York this is a must go to venue. Great service Great beer and Great food.

A brilliant old school pub in York. Serves food and has a decent range of beers and lagers. This venue also has life music on a regular basis.

Cozy place but chips expensive and only get a small bowl. My little boy was a bit gutted.

Traditionally set Yorkshire bar with fantastic selection of craft beers, ales and ciders. Excellent friendly staff. Definitely worth a pit stop if you're near Shambles market.

As ever this charming little pub with welcoming staff stole my heart again. With a good range of ales, great chips and the accepting of southerners this is how you want your local to be, I come up from London and use this as my base whilst visiting 62 of Yorks lovely pubs, but the three tuns always reminds me of home. Thank you one and all, already planning next visit.

If you're looking to experience a truly authentic, hundreds of years old pub, full of heritage and character in the heart of York, this certainly is the place to go! Live bands, lots of choice of local gins, great pub food. This has no heirs or graces, bar staff super efficient. We stayed in York for 3 days and returned every day for either a lunch time, afternoon or / and evening! We had a great time and this will definitely be on our "to-do" list when we come to visit york again. We also had the opportunity to speak to the owner who enlightened us on the "spooky" tales and happenings in this pub which has been in his family since the 70's.

Of the pubs that I went to in York this was my least favourite. It does have some traditional features, but it lacks the feeling and character of an old English pub that the outside suggests. Inside it has a more modern type of feel, with laminate flooring, loud pop music and clutter of all types everywhere. Way too much stuff out, like a hoarders pub 😂 The food looked alright but the smell of it was quite overpowering and didn't help the ambiance at all. I wanted to give the place a try, but I wouldn't go back.

Really nice historic pub in town with good food, great staff and some fab beers. Lucky enough to get a table at lunchtime and fills up quickly. Would def visit again on our next York trip.

Three days in a row me and my family tried to enter the pub for lunch and the pub was just over crowded with rowdy drinkers. Yes I get it’s a pub, that’s where people go to drink. But in the past I’ve been there and it’s been a quiet pleasant environment to enjoy a nice lunch. This time every time you go in it’s full to the door with people getting wasted in the middle of the day, the music is deafening and people smoking right in the doorway. I’m disgusted with what this place has become. All my childhood memories of enjoying myself there have been washed away. I won’t be returning.

Amazing cute and traditional pub . We arrived a few sundays ago for a spot of sunday lunch . We got all exited when we seen the giant Yorkshire puddings mains on the menu . At a price point of short of 50.00 for two lunches and two pints we thought we where in for a stunning homemade lunch . Meat was perfectly cooked i had the beef and my friend had the mince option . We where very gutted to see this stunning pub embodied with history was serving a frozen Yorkshire pudding . Yes it was the bigger size but literally the type you get for 1.50 for 3 in Asda freezer . For how easy it is to make a Yorkshire pudding we where a touch gutted. As we are proper northern from Durham we do like abit of gravy , the mains came very dry . To be met with a repeat of my question from the waitress bringing over our lunch . When we did ask for a jug of gravy we where told it was going to be a pound . Fair enough this must be how things are done in and around that area but then fetching the card machine to ping the pound on the card before we even tucked into our lunch sat there abit extreme. Very limited veg option on this lunch also but cannot fault the meat . Perfection. Just a shame about charging at table side for a very watery and smallest offering of gravy , also the frozen pudding . Wouldn't reccomend the thatchers on draft either as it was flat as the road.

Great food in a traditional old feel pub definitely recommend the large filled Yorkshire puddings 100 perfect hit the spot. Will hopefully be back soon to dine again.

We popped in for a sandwich, I must admit that it was scrumptious! I had a smoked bacon blt, it came with a crunchy salad (not limp lettuce leaves) and a portion of chips. The bacon was crispy and tasty, it got a 10 from me, totally recommend this place with the friendly staff and a pleasant atmosphere. Well done folks!

Excellent old traditional pub in the centre of York which has been here since at least 1782. Apart from the excellent selection of English ales and other beers, wines and spirits, they also have a great menu. One dish I thoroughly recommend is a classic Yorkshire dish consisting of a large Yorkshire pudding filled with braised steak, vegetables and mash potatoes. If you are hungry, this is the meal for you! I’ve taken photos of it in this review. A truly lovely ambience and one of the best pubs in York! Highly recommended.

The atmosphere can stay the way it is....the pure character of the building takes (the not so good service because the lady behind the bar is so run off her feet as the only one behind the bar) your imagination to another time and place hundreds of years ago. A visit is a must!

Visited here last night on the 02nd of September 2024 with family for a meal as we’d heard good reviews. I ordered the fish and chips and I can honestly say it’s the worst battered fish I’ve had in my life and I’m army veteran so I’ve had some c**p food in my lifetime and this fish takes the biscuit. Overcooked is an understatement, when I cut into it there was batter flying all over the place as well as my family, should have came with a face visor. When the waitress came round to ask how our food was and I told her she just giggled and walked away. Do not go here for food, s**t food and s**t staff!!!

Called in for ‘just a sandwich’ got a BLT with smoked crispy bacon. Came with a fully loaded sandwich, chips and a crunchy tasty salad. It a 10 from me 😊👍

The food was not good. Burger bun wasn't fresh, chips super hard. Fish and chips batter was bad same with the chips. It's bad when Weatherspoons food is better. Id save your money

OWNERS HAVE LAZILY CONFUSED ME WITH ANOTHER PERSON THEY PRESUMABLY TREATED BADLY, PLEASE SEE N.B. AT END. Bouncers here treated me absolutely horribly. One wonders why they are required for a very small pub which can't have too many people visiting. Have the feeling the operation would prefer to cater for tourists looking for a quaint place for food and there's little consideration for those considered riff raff, but perhaps I'm wrong. NB: the owner seems to have me confused with someone else based on their reply. I was not refused drinks, I am merely remarking on the staff and their attitude. Makes me think you confused me with someone else and your door staff have regular problems with people because you are an unpleasant place all round. I will be encouraging a witness to leave a further review.

Excellent service, the waitress who served us was very kind and very scrupulous about my dietary needs. The environment is very characteristic and we ate good dishes.

What a brilliant pub. We went in tonight for a few drinks and a meal. It was the first time being here, but not the last. The food was excellent and so was the service. Well done guys.
