While visiting the in laws in Appleby we decided to give this pub a visit on New Year’s Eve . I have to say we weren’t disappointed . Having only been in once before on Boxing Day for a quick couple of pints I knew it was going to be fine . When we walked in it was like walking in to my own local so warm was the welcome from staff and locals alike A fantastic community pub in the middle of a fantastic community . We will definitely treating this as our local when we are up here again and I suggest who ever reads this does the same

I am hoping to be constructive in this review. The pub is in a very attractive location and there are plenty of brown tourist signs giving directions. The pub has so much potential and the new owner clearly has enthusiasm. He was very welcoming and friendly. We were his only customers on a Sunday lunchtime. We were hoping for a traditional Sunday roast and were disappointed to be told that these were only served occasionally. The menu looked OK for a pub and promised homemade dishes. I am not going to dwell on the food but it did not live up to expectations. I wish the new owners all the luck in the world and really hope that they can make a success of the business.

Four of us called here for lunch and to get some respite from the rain whilst walking the last section of the Dales High Way. Great Asby is half way between Newbiggin and Appleby. Called upon this pub after a word of mouth recommendation. A great 'locals' pub but warmly welcoming to walkers like us (with dog!). The locals and landlord were chatting to us all evening; it couldn't have been friendlier. We had some food - fish and chips and the gammon. My partner said it was the best gammon he's ever had! The fish and chips were also divine. Proper pub fayre and hearty portions. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening here and hope to come straight back on our next visit to the area.

What an absolute joy. Given the pandemic we phoned the pub prior to renting a cottage locally - to see if/when they served food. Right from the get-go on the phone they were lovely and helpful - this bodes well We’ve been twice now in the period of a week - all the staff are ‘spot on’ - the food is good ‘honest’ food - well made, fresh - well presented and very tasty. However the homemade cheesecake is glorious, and not to be missed Good local brewery beers on tap, clean and well looked after The locals are friendly - the village is pretty and tucked away What’s not to love

Volveremos. Tina

On our 1st night in Appleby-in-Westmorland, I chose to eat here by reading the reviews on trip advisor. Its a very cute and cosy inn. Make sure you book a table as you may not have one if you don't as it can get busy. I asked if I could try a Whitleys new flavoured gin and he gave me some in a small glass. I was pleased with that. I don't know the young lads name but he was serving in the bar and he recently got his A levels results. so, thank you for your good customer service. I had the fish and chips, it was a good portion size for me, it was very yummy along with the homemade tartare sauce and mushy peas. My partner had the lasagne and the homemade chunky chips and that was delicious too. We also shared the Eve's pudding. Thank you also to the young lad that served us and kept checking with us if everything was okay. I love the personal touch that you have with your customers. With friends on Saturday 8th October, we drove 15 miles to the village to have a drink with a view to eating there on another occasion. I checked the website through the local parish council to ensure its opening times, and although it stated the kitchen was closed, we wanted to try the place for a drink. On arrival at 12.30pm, the pub was closed. I telephoned the pub at 5.15pm and there was no reply. What a way to run a business ? With hundreds of flyers inserted in a local newspaper advertising the place, it remains a mystery and I won't bother ever returning. Pubs like this give others a bad name in the Eden Valley.

We were in this pub twice while on an Easter break, once for drinks including coffee and hot chocolate and once for dinner. On both occasions the service from the friendly staff was excellent. The food was freshly cooked, tasty and served piping hot. The menu is not extensive and is actually a board on the wall, three of us had fish and three had steak pie, both of which were lovely. The desert menu was also a winner. There was live music on the Saturday and it sounded good but we couldn't stay because our children were tired. However the children and the dog were all made welcome. It would be advisable to book if you want to eat because it is not very big, the night we ate there all the tables in the dining area were reserved.

Visited this traditional country pub on Saturday evening. We started with some of the local real ale which was so tasty that we decided to stick with it through our meal. There has been a change of emphasis on the food front in recent months at The Three Greyhounds with it concentrating on good quality pub grub rather than anything more elaborate. The menu is relatively short; no more than can be displayed on the chalk board by the bar. However there is a good selection, enough to tempt most palates. We certainly enjoyed everything that we ordered, as it seems did our fellow diners. We had eaten fairly early but as the evening worn on the pub got more and more busy with a jolly clientele of mostly local people. Clearly the added draw was the live entertainment - a solo singer/guitarist who provided excellent entertainment for the next couple of hours. I believe his name was Nathan Richardson. If this is a sign of things to come at The Three Greyhounds then I wish them the best of luck - good food, good beer, and a most convivial atmosphere - what more do you want?

Revisited to find a traditional country pub, the cheerful landlady served great pint of local ale and we enjoyed a well cooked Sunday lunch.Couldn't have been more different to our last visit.

On staying in the village whilst on holiday, we visited the pub a few times. Landlady was really nice and so were the regulars as everyone spoke. The first time we went in we were told that the chef couldn't accommodate us for dinner, as he had a table of 4,6 and 14 coming in later, we wanted food at 6.30...needless to say we booked for later in the week. It was fab...do not underestimate the chef...for a small cosy pub, the food was excellent and we fully recommend eating here...please book and support this small local pub :-)

We called in over Easter weekend and enjoyed a great pint of T/Taylors Landord - kept very well. The food has improved a great deal since the new chef joined too - excellent. the Rissotto starter tasted amazing. Always worth booking a table - name me somewhere good that isn't these days!Looks good for the lick of paint inside too. We'll be returning... can't wait!

Great Asby is a pretty little village and a perfect setting for a country pub that still looks like a pub both inside and out. The menu is short- a few good things done well and not your average pub grub dishes. The photos on Trip Advisor do look like it is fine dining, that was not my experience, the presentation was no where near that good for the mains but that shouldn't detract from the good quality food that was served to us. Including drinks and some desserts the bill came to £70 for a family of four.Service also excellent and welcoming.

My parents live in Great Asby so I have been drinking (and eating, once, a bad experience so not repeated) here on many visits over the years, but today, what a transformation! The menu was varied and interesting, and the pub cosy and warm with a good open fire. The beer-battered halloumi and the cheese soufflé were both perfect starters, while the roast beef as a main was cooked to perfection, and served with six also perfectly cooked veg and two Yorkshire puddings. The chef, having been advised that my mum can't tolerate gluten, had prepared a gluten-free batter with which he coated fish and served with chips and peas which she pronounced spectacular. The apple tart tatin (sadly not suitable for Mum!) with cinnamon ice cream was gorgeous. We ran out of room after that, but I will definitely be back!

Went for Sunday lunch with a friend who has just moved to the area. Don't usually have a roast but this one was delicious. Obviously freshly cooked to order with a beautifully cooked chicken breast, crispy roasties and vegetables done to perfection. We sat by the open fire which, was very cosy. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Would definitely go back when next in the area.

Called in today for a second visit. We were not disappointed. Such an exciting menu it took a while to decide. Truly excellent food with friendly relaxed service. We will be regular visitors.

Popped in for drinks, only to find don't serve coffee or tea when the kitchen isn't open as separate business. Not impressed, it is a real shame as most pubs I know serve hot drinks anytime

Having read the reviews we decided to give this a go, a party of 9 for Sunday lunch. Sunday roast was served in a bowl which just made it difficult to eat, the quality of food is very good but at £10.95 for 1 course it was too expensive for dinner in a bowl. Ice cream desserts reclaimed our faith a little but will not be returning. A good old fashioned pub just making silly mistakes.

Acorn Bank is a splendid place to visit and made even more so by a visit to the pop-up cafe situated in the court yard. Run by a mother and daughter team, the homemade cakes using produce from Acorn
