Really calming atmosphere and great food. The cocktails were intricately flavoured. The menu had meat and veggie option, we had a variety of both. In particular the lamb was exceptional, cod was meaty and perfectly cooked, walnut pesto complimenting a soup was a great little bomb of flavour. The menu seems to change pretty much every day so the website might give you an indication of food type but you should expect a daily offer when you arrive. Wine matching was excellent, staff were friendly, professional and not overbearing. The signature bread is incredible and the cheese board is very generous in size and types of local cheese. It is remote but there were lots of taxis in and out if you aren't staying in the rooms. Staff seemed happy to help with this. We stayed a short walk away so had no issues either way. It's a lovely restaurant, in a lovely location, with really good food. Well worth a visit.

Vom Three Chimneys waren wir begeistert.

The restaurant is a very upscale establishment well off the beaten path on the northwest corner of Skye. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. The dinner is a four-course affair priced at 110 pounds each. It might be worth checking the menu to make sure that they have the kind of dishes that will appeal. There are not a lot of menu options in general. You can ask for vegetarian, and they will prepare something separate…basically one option. They have an extensive wine and whiskey list. Their chocolate mousse was very good. Overall, the menu meal prep was fancy bordering on too fancy…it detracted from having a good dinner. My bill for 2 people was 250 pounds…sadly it just wasn’t worth it.

They kindly let us use their toilets (we’d walked down because The Oyster Shed had a long line and no toilets). Their views out to the loch were gorgeous so we took a look at the menu. It looked good so we stayed. Sat at a table outside on their deck. 10/10 views. Had cullen skink and the local cheeses plate. Both were delicious. My only critique is that the sourdough bread was a bit dry and bland. Service was excellent. I even charged my phone in an outdoor outlet. Great lunch.

Absolutely fantastic. The idyllic location and the beautiful room in The House Over-by set the wonderful scene for our last night on Skye. We were both blown away by the amazing dinner, served by very friendly and professional staff. 4 course meal served with wine pairings was first class from start to finish. Just a shame it’s a 6 hour drive, but look forward to our next visit.

Having visited the Three Chimneys years ago I thought it was a great idea to book lunch for my wife's 50th birthday. We travelled from our holiday accommodation nearly 2 hours away only to find a locked door! Went to reception to be told that the restaurant had to be closed due to a severe health and safety issue. Apparently efforts had been made to contact customers beforehand by email which I didn't receive in time. A four hour round trip and an extremely disappointed wife on her 50th birthday. Seems to be a more regular occurrence after reading other reviews. The day was rescued by another amazing restaurant on the island

The scallops, the duck, the lamb were very good. The desserts were also very good. The other dishes were u inspiring. Service: excellent. Ambience: a little noisy when the room was full. Cost: a little pricey

Through various means, we had heard of Three Chimneys for a while and knew it was one of those bucket list kind of places we wanted to experience. We booked our dinner there about 9 months in advance. We splurged and chose the Chef's Table Experience and added one wine pairing. First, Three Chimney's is just a cute place along a single track on the western side of the Isle of Skye. It sits among other cottages and sheep pastures overlooking the water. We were fortunate to be staying nearby so we could walk to dinner. Parking is available though if you happen to drive. When we arrived, we were escorted to the parlor in another building to wait for all the parties at our Chef's Table to arrive. The Chef's Table seats 8 people. We didn't know any of the other couples so we spent that time with introductions and getting to know each other. Drinks were available while we waited. Once everyone arrived, our group was guided to the kitchen. The two of us and 6 others (3 other couples) were seated at a large farmhouse-style table IN the kitchen. We were able to watch all the chefs as they worked and were invited to get up and walk around for a closer look if we wanted to. As for the food, it was phenomenal. There were 10 dishes including dessert. Oysters, crab, mussels, scallops, beef, pork - we got it all. Our favorite hands-down was the Scallop dish. But they were all creative and good. Three Chimneys is a pricey night out and some people might not think it's worth it. We're foodies so we enjoyed the once-in-a-lifetime chance to dine at a renowned Michelin-mentioned restaurant.

We visited for dinner and from the moment we entered were looked after by professional, knowledgeable, and friendly team of servers. The meal was beautiful, in particular the hand dived sconser scallops presented two ways were exceptional. I had monkfish as a main and my partner had the version main which he loved. My dessert was possibly my favourite dish, a beautiful parfait. All the staff were excellent, on hand at all times yet not intrusive. The wines were paired very well and we tried a glass of fizz which was essentially champagne however as produced in Essex, by a French champagne maker no less it could not be called champagne . Thank you to Ryan and all the team, we will return the next time we in Skye.

The Three Chimneys has appeared in newspaper articles in the UK for several years and, at last, we were pleased to have the chance to dine there on what was our first visit to Skye. Our patience was rewarded! In what I would describe as a blend of tasting menu and a la carte, a limited choice is combined with "delicate" portions of wonderful locally sourced food, providing a very satisfying meal. Wines were excellent, with clever pairing recommendations should you wish to follow them. Service and surroundings were in keeping with what was a memorable meal.

Lovely atmosphere and very pleasant staff. The food was a mixed bag. The fish based appetizers were slimy which was very off putting. My braised beef 2nd and 3rd course was delicious. My wife had a vegetarian soufflé that was very bland. The desserts and cocktails were ok but not great. By the end of the meal, my wife disliked almost everything and left hungry ans most plates were sent back uneaten. My experience was a bit better but overall disappointed, especially considering the £300 price tag. Based on my experience and other recent reviews, I would recommend passing on this place until they up their game. Big thumbs down. 👎

This restaurant is lovely, the ambience is very nice. We were underwhelmed by the food, and the price was exorbitant. The staff were fine, but after a while our waiter seemed to repeat his memorized spiel and eventually his flattery felt disingenuous. For the price, and their reluctance to comp something they got wrong, it was an evening that had so much potential that fell flat. We were so disappointed. Additional tip: I had never had pigeon before and the waiter talked me into it. I will never try pigeon again.

We visited Three Chimneys and stayed at The House Over By directly adjacent to the restaurant. The restaurant offers a variety of locally sourced produce which had great flavours. A picture of the menu is attached as are photos of our food. We had Crab Custard, Langoustine, Scallops (although the dulce made it a bit too salty/sea weedy and overpowered the scallops), Vatten Croft Beef (absolutely delicious), Twice Baked Souffle, Textures of Pear and Pecan Praline Parfait. Service was friendly and efficient.

This meal exceeded all our expectations. The waiting staff were excellent, they congratulated us on our special occasion multiple times and made this a really special meal for us. Each course was divine and there were ‘secret’ ingredients or elements in each dish which weren’t listed on the menu and we really enjoyed discovering. We would recommend this to everyone looking for a special meal in Skye.

I always wanted to visit the Three Chimneys for a number of years but was never in the area. It had a great reputation. Prior to our Skye visit there was no availability, due to cancellations because of covid we managed to reserve a lunch booking on line last minute but only allowed a table for two.We called the Three Chimneys and it went straight to voicemail it stated if we leave a voicemail someone would call us back. We did just that and left a voicemail to ask if we could add 1 person to our booking. The return call never came as promised so we had to leave our daughter with friends. There was no one to greet us at the door on arrival but this may be due to a shortage of staff as many hospitality businesses are urrently experiencing this. We didn't wait long to be seated. I found the service a bit robotic, no atmosphere and you could hear every conversation from other guests (no back ground music)The menu was explained in detail by our server then our drinks order was taken followed by our food choices. The cold langoustine dish wasn't for me, I didn't enjoy it. Eating a scallop dish from two plates confused me slightly, but everyone is different my preference is to eat food from one plate, saying that the presentation acompliment dish with the scallop dish was impressive and a nice touch. The cured salmon was over powered by the mackeral mousse which was hidden by a lot of peas......lots of peas....more peas than cured salmon, in fact more peas than the veg served with my venison main course. The venison portion was poor in my opinion, tiny end piece of venison with four small bits of beetroot for £32 didn't blow me away. The bread and butter served were very nice, both butters served were light and fluffy bursting with flavour as was the haddock starter and the cod main course. The courgette & butter sauce served with the cod dish was delicious, our server informed me it was made from the juice of the ham hock with courgettes and butter? It was very tasty and worked really well with this dish. Both desserts were delightful I loved the garnish that accompanied the chocolate dessert with dfferent textures and lots of flavours it was very tasty. We had also been booked in to Edinbane lodge on the last night of our road trip to Skye. This was the experience I was hoping for at the Three Chimneys which sadly wasn't achieved. The above is only my opinion and my experience I didn't leave raving about my experience here which is a shame as I was hoping for something special.

Myself and my partner booked in May for 30 July lunch meal. The service to begin with was absolutely superb, however the Maitres d was rather rude to my partner clearing the table without so much as a word whilst I was at the toilet. This was the opposite to our experience with every other member of staff. we presumed he was having a bad day but seemed to interact with every other couple/party well except ourselves. Was it because we were young and most people in the restaurant were older? It dampened what was meant to be a much anticipated and enjoyable experience. We would definitely recommend the food but are disappointed at this tainting our experience.

I am veggie and GF so not the easiest to cater for but the three chimneys advertises that these are both options. The drive there was lovely and the setting beautiful. The staff were attentive and the decor classy. The meal started with warm homemade gf bread and the most delicious whipped butter. I was very impressed and it set the tone for a great meal. However after I had sent in my order for a starter and main from the gf menu, the waiter returned saying my main wasn't gf. I had to then order two starters instead as the only other option was not to my taste. One starter was nice and one not, almost raw pieces of leek with some sauces. It also had a gluten pastry which had to be removed from my plate after it had been served. The dessert again just didn’t have the flavours. When I m paying high prices for small portions I expect the flavours to be stunning. Sadly this was not the case for me or my two guests, one veggie and one had fish paired with ham? Non of us had the experience we hoped for definitely not worth the price and I won’t be returning or recommending I m afraid. Such a shame I so wanted it to be wonderful.

The food was simply spectacular. We had all four courses covering most of the options, every single one delicious. Smoked haddock first was divine as was the cured salmon.Scallop second course beautifully cookedRoasted cod wonderful for third course. Beautifully presented. The whipped potato with bacon jam the best we've ever tasted. The stuff of dreams! Our 6yr old was allowed to order smaller portions of our dishes which she loved. Fantastic restaurant, deserving of its accolades (and the drive). To me, Michelin starred restaurants are either great dining experiences or pretentious trying to show off with mediocre food. Three Chimneys is a great experience. Rather than a tasting menu, there are four courses, where you select in each. This process provides variety but allows you to take the dishes that are most appealing (and helpful with my picky family). My first course was wonderful cured salmon which came with an incredible mackerel mousse. Second course we’re scallops, seared perfectly but again overshadowed by the accompanying smoked salmon two ways. My third course, normally the “main”, was venison, which was cooked ideally. Rare but not at all gamey, the perfect colour. I finished with a cheese plate, which included five delicious, and very varying cheeses with quite helpful tasing notes. Two pieces of advice. The restaurant is quite hard to find and our nav system was pretty far off, try to get directions. When you think you are lost, keep going. Also they have a great vegetarian menu but we almost did not book the restaurant because it is not on the website.

My husband and I visited The Three Chimneys today to celebrate our wedding a week prior. It was absolutely out of this world - a fantastic afternoon. Every single course (we had 4) was outstanding, the menu is clearly something the chefs spent a lot of time developing. Our knock out course had to be the pigeon. We were feeling adventurous and wanted to try new things, and this was one of them - it was delicious. The waiters were so lovely and welcoming too. Our main server, Liam, even spent some time teaching us how to pronounce some of the Gaelic named villages nearby. Would absolutely recommend this special place to everyone. I was really looking forward to this, we'd wanted to go for years and as Covid restrictions began to lift this was to be a real treat. We had booked for 2 nights during our stay on Skye, lined up taxis and taken smart clothes to make it really special. The food was good, my salmon came with a pine puree the taste of which will stay with me for ever, it was utterly divineThe wine was magnificent (but expensive) but for me the service lacked the little special something you would expect for a place with this reputation. The staff were in black but not particularly smart, but the worst bit was the bill.We were given the wrong one, considerably less than ours should have been. When we pointed this out there was not a word of thanks, just a brisk 'I'll sort that out for you'. For me? Really? We didn't go back.

Much thought goes in to every dish and I can honestly say that I have never been disappointed. We had an absolutely fantastic experience at the Three Chimneys. Perfect food cooked and served in a stunning location. What’s not to love? The menu wasn’t a typical tasting menu, so there was freedom to choose. The dishes are separated into courses on the menu, but the waitress highlighted that you can have as many dishes as you like, in any order. It’s unusual to get so much freedom of choice in a restaurant like this. The drinks menu was very extensive too, with some imaginative cocktails- I would have tried a Highland Negroni if I wasn’t driving! And just when we thought the day couldn’t get any better, we then watched a pod of dolphins leaping around in the Sea Loch across from the restaurant as we were leaving. A truly magical part of the world.

We began planning our foodycation to Skye a year ago, eventually plumpng for two of the mos famous and established restaurants on the island. Commencing with a two night stay at Kinloch Lodge in the south and following up with a similar experience at Three Chimneys in the north of the island. We found it interesting that both have altered their dining style in the wake of the pandemic, choosing to move away from a tasting menu format. That, we found is where the similarity between the duo ends. The former promised so much and failed to deliver. The latter delivered so much more than anticpated but with an understated style and elegance.

Fascinating little restaurant in a delightful old crofter’s house on the water’s edge half way down the scenic Milovaig road. Well worth exploring to the end of this road after dinner if you have time. Four courses with a choice of 3 dishes for each, food was beautifully presented and full of interesting ingredients; a gel made of Douglas fir made the cured salmon zing, perfectly cooked scallops, though I wasn’t keen on the seaweed dashi surrounding them. Devilled pigeon was my partner’s favourite dish and I really enjoyed the pork loin main course. Decent-sized portions, you won’t leave hungry. Front of house staffed entirely by women (on our visit at least), service is super-friendly, relaxed and everyone is really knowledgeable about the food and wine.

I used to think every Michelin Star restaurant had a taster menu. Now I know they don’t and it doesn’t matter a jot. My education began when I had to take control and select my 4 courses from the à la carte menu at the Three Chimneys. There is no taster menu here. Refreshingly I didn’t need a degree in “All things Michelin” or the help of the knowledgeable staff to read the unfussy and understandable menu. But that is not to say the menu is boring. Far from it. There is flare aplenty and plenty of tasty and novel combinations, pork and rhubarb is one fond memory. The Three Chimneys was local and authentic, with ingredients, so far as possible, sourced from the Isle of Skye. Take the house gin so balanced in our pre-dinner G&T we bought a bottle. The botanicals are picked locally and its heavy use of orange is a clever nod to the genealogy of the restaurant, the last owner a global expert on all things marmalade. Paddington Bear would approve. With 1 Michelin Star you expect the food to use “quality ingredients,” “technique” and be “flavourful,” “skilful,” and pack “personality” (each a key Michelin criterion). The Three Chimneys had all of those things. These Michelin buzzwords were equally well achieved for my wife’s menu, which was the main menu, sans dairy. The specialness of the Three Chimneys is however not to be found in the food. At the western edge of the Isle of Skye it is as far away from cluttered city living as you could wish to be. I would estimate that on the six hundred and thirty seven mile trek from East London we closely passed near ninety per cent of the UK’s 184 Michelin Star restaurants. Simply put, we travelled. My wife and I however were not attempting to be foodie Scotts of the Antarctic. First and foremost we were visiting Skye for a holiday and to enjoy its natural beauty. Great food a very happy byproduct. However dining out at the Three Chimneys was a stop we don’t regret making. The structure of the original cottage has largely been kept with relatively small and few windows meaning the striking sea-blue of Loch Dunvegan on which the restaurants rests is not always in view when dining. The reality is there is no need for flashy modern architectural features to enhance what’s been standing for so long. A restaurant confident in what it is. I think it has every right to be.

The flavours were amazing and the waiting staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. We ordered all three desserts as we couldn’t choose. The strawberry dessert was to die for! The custard was super tasty! The mains were small but really tasty and well balanced and considered.Would definitely recommend a visit if you’re looking for a treat.Only downside was that we understood we had a two hour slot but as we were 10minutues from our time being up the (what I presume was the manager ) just slid the bill on our table and didn’t say anything other than”there’s your bill” it would have been nice for someone to say “I hope you’ve had a great evening etc here is your bill as we do unfortunately need the table” or just some acknowledgment of our custom not that we were just being shoved out. But overall we had a lovely evening

While staying on Skye for a couple days we went for a birthday celebration. We had 3 courses and desserts and each course was excellent. The best dish we had was the Halibut, beautifully cooked and served with a mussel sauce. Service was excellent and we were given all the information we needed to make our menu choices. For us we felt that this restaurant could go to another level by offering guests an amuse bouche and some sort of bread. This is the norm in most of the fine dining restaurants that we have eaten in and it does makes a difference. And for the overall price that you pay for a meal here it would not seem unreasonable.

The food was lovely although not to the same standard as our last visit. Just be aware of the high drinks charges. When we arrived we were offered ‘still or sparkling water’ and I accept it’s my mistake I should have said tap water would be fine but I (wrongly) assumed our server meant still tap water or bottled sparkling water. The charge at the end of the evening was £5 for a bottle of water. I also ordered a vodka martini which was a little on the steep side at £14. There seems to be something missing in the atmosphere that was there on previous visits. I understand it’s possibly down to covid and distancing. The tasting menu had a lot to do with it, it just made the experience more special. The menu now is a la carte.

4 of us from the same household had lunch here on Thursday. It was a magnificent experience. The restaurant itself is in a beautiful location on the waters edge. We were warmly greeted when we arrived and then enjoyed a truly delicious 4 course lunch. All the food was out of this world and the service was attentive and very friendly. The atmosphere in general was relaxed and not a bit stuffy. All of us absolutely loved it and if you get a chance to go, you must.

Despite recent negative reviews, we booked a table for six (same household). The welcome was excellent and we had pre lunch drinks outside, looking out to sea in glorious sunshine. When ready, we sat inside and a stupendous lunch follows. Everyone had 4 course and all six of us agreed every dish was fantastic. Personally I have smoked haddock, pigeon pie, Black Isle beer and strawberry with custard parfait. The strong taste in each course indicates the freshness of the ingredients. As an example the beef was so tasty, reminiscent of South Africa’s best steaks.I believe that this meal was in the top three meals I have ever had, and undoubtedly the best meal I have eaten on UK.To back up the food, the service was friendly, efficient and understated.

I can't tell you what the food is like because our booking got cancelled. We booked a table months ago as a treat for my daughter-in-law, a front line nhs worker. She had been really looking forward to it. With less than one week to go, they wanted us to come one hour earlier than previously booked. Unfortunately, we could only come half an hour earlier due to our ferry booking. The Manager said the kitchen times had been changed and it was their earlier time of 2.30pm or nothing. They would not even let us come half an hour later. Now we are struggling to book an alternative table because of short notice. Shame on you Three Chimneys.

Although we have visited Skye for many years this year was the first time we had booked the Three Chimneys and we were looking forward to it very much. On arrival we were shown to a small table directly opposite the entrance, as I feel the cold I immediately asked if we could’ve moved to a table away from the draft but this was not possible, I sat with my coat around my legs which seemed ironic as we had only recently been allowed to eat inside once more. My starter was Oysters which I was told would come with lemon but I thought that it would also come with the traditional onion in red wine vinegar and tabasco sauce but sadly it did not. We proceeded to course two, I had pigeon which was ok but not thrilling. After these two courses the table opposite us became free and I asked our waitress if we could move, I was told she would see what she could do. I felt that I should not have had to ask again as I clearly was not happy. Before the waitress reappeared the general manager did move us to the warmer seat which was a relief. When my main arrived I had been informed by the waitress that it would come with dauphinois potato when we were discussing which side to have, as I was thinking of ordering the mash side but when informed that dauphinois came with the meal I obviously didn’t order mash as well. No potatoes of any kind arrived with my meal, I asked the waitress and she seemed confused and went off to the kitchen to check. After sometime she returned with a small bowl containing one very small round battered ball which seemed empty inside! Luckily my husband had ordered the mash which was delicious so we shared. I was left bemused as to what part of this ball resembled dauphinois. My husband had scallops which he enjoyed and he was quite taken by the pickled herring ice cream but was left disappointed by the main beef course, being rare but somehow dry. As others have said, the atmosphere was zero, no background music, no warmth, felt everyone could hear your conversation, cold clinical feel. Layout of tables either near toilets or entrance door, apart from a couple. Although the Three Chimneys could have become a regular highlight on future visits to Skye, sadly after this introduction, I think not.

We have had this on our ‘bucket list’ for 20 years now and so it is with regret that I am having to write the review. We are ‘local’ from Edinburgh but spend a lot of time travelling around Scotland and particularly on the west coast and so it doesn’t give us any pleasure to be writing this.We booked the restaurant online back in March. We were given the option of booking the tasting menu at the time, only to find on arrival that the tasting menus were no longer on offer. Had we known we may have chosen to eat at a different time but no one contacted us to let us know of this change of plan, irrespective of the justifiable COVID reasons. Not a great start to our special evening out!We were given a table at the door of the restaurant. No offence to GP surgeries, but it felt like we were eating in a doctors surgery waiting room. It was cold, draughty and busy with people coming and going and servers passing by. The ‘room’ lacked any ambience. We asked to be moved but the only available table was next to us and so not much better, despite the fact that other tables in the restaurant sat empty for the vast majority of our meal. The ‘private’ discussion we had with our server about this was also not very private! We felt like second class citizens as it seemed obvious to us that those staying in rooms got preference to restaurant only guests! Our table was terrible. Wine by the (very small 125ml) glass seems to be encouraged rather than bottles. The servers squeaky shoes did our heads in! The food was thankfully very good. Everything cooked to perfection....apart from the lead shot which I found in my pigeon breast.....but apart from that it couldn’t be faulted. Had the venue had more ambience, had the aesthetics been right, had the place been cosier, had we felt more welcome than we did and had the prices been more realistic, then we would have given this an 8 out of 10, but as it was, it was a 6 out of 10, possibly 5!

Had high hopes of this restaurant but we were underwhelmed. A larger choice of less courses would have been better for us. Even the pudding choice was sparse. Scallops were lovely but £20 for 2 scallops seemed a little excessive. We were two couples but had to sit at different tables despite being able to sit together and else where seemed odd. We asked if this could be changed and were told no. This didn’t help the lack of atmosphere. All waiting staff were very helpful. Ate at ScorryBreac the night before which was much better.

I was really looking forward to a Michelin class lunch. This experience fell far short of that. The menu was very short on choice and frankly very poor. Having only a few dishes done really well is great, if done well, my dishes were very poor.I had raw pidgeon breast starter and braised beef main.Beef was three lumps , two were slow cooked , the other was rare , pink in the centre and was certainly not cooked at the same time as the braised. There were only two side dishes on offer , mashed potato and a salad. We booked with another couple and were seated at different tables despite the new Covid level 2 rule that we could be seated together, as we had been at every other restaurant on this trip. Not wanting to cause an atmosphere , we did not argue this, we should have if I had known what was to come. A bad atmosphere would have been something as there was absolutely no atmosphere or ambience at all.Sorry but very disappointed.

Typifies their attitude which is not that of other high class hotels/restaurants that we have been to. I have looked forward to visiting here for years. The location and scenery are stunning. Hotel room a really good size, immaculately clean, excellent plumbing. the main reason to visit was the food and over two nights we enjoyed every mouthful of every course. Obviously there is some wonderful fresh seafood, expertly cooked and presented with really friendly and relaxed service. Loved the halibut, the scorched langoustine starter and the lamb.Only one reason not to give 5 stars, we arrived early after a long drive. Did not try to check in but wanted to get some lunch and there was nothing on offer and a rather offhand way of dealing with this. That said the the rest of the staff we encountered were really open and friendly

It's the Three Chimneys! You can imagine our anticipation. It is therefore with a heavy heart I'm writing this review. Firstly let's get the context out of the way: the restaurant is operating under the current Covid-19 restrictions, so hand gel, facemasks and no alcohol with the meal are all a pain, but absolutely not the restaurant's fault, and they're managing the limitations well with a fine selection (a whole A4 sheet) of non-alcoholic drinks to accompany the meal.A course-by-course account: Course 1: Oysters (1 each of natural, dressed and cooked) were all superb - large, flavoursome and each different to the other. The garlic on the cooked oyster was punchy but that's a compliment not a complaint.Course 2: "Isle of Muck Partridge, Pie, Jus Gra [they mean Jus Gras], Gherkin, Pear". The partridge was delicious, the pie (I assume filled with partridge meat) was nice. I didn't see a gherkin or a pear, but there was a quenelle of something that might have been a mixture of both. Course 3: "Soay Lamb, Beetroot, Cabbage, Black Garlic, Bramble Sauce". The plate felt cold, and everything quickly ended up tepid. The lamb itself was served two ways and both ways were as good as lamb can get. The cabbage was excellent, the beetroot - well, it's beetroot, earthy and quite sweet. The bramble sauce was understated, which may have been the intention but it got lost, and I didn't notice the black garlic.Sides: at £6 for potatoes and £7 for vegetables, neither of us bothered. At the prices we were already paying, we both felt a small serving of potatoes and vegetables could have been included. I mean, how do you make potatoes cost £6 for a serving?Cheese Board: A selection of 5 cheeses. Four of the five were lovely (the brie, the goats' cheese, the cheddar and the blue); the Rollright (from South Gloustershire - one of two spelling mistakes on the cheese menu!) was either subtle or just bland. And the cheddar and the brie are both available from my village store. And honey has no place on a cheeseboard, or is that just me?(Oh, and on the bill was £5 for a bottle of water with the meal. Offered with the words "Would you like sparkling or still bottled water?" That one doesn't appear on the A4 sheet of non-alcoholic drinks)So, all in all, the meal was very nice. But I expected superb, with a dash of sparkling, and I didn't get it. Shame, really.

Having eaten here quite some time ago and been blown away by the exceptional food and experience, I had ‘bigged up’ the restaurant to my new partner and was very excited at the anticipation of another wonderful meal. The menu was promising and my oyster starter had the best, biggest and freshest I’d ever eaten. The second course promised scorched langoustines with pickled mussels, cauliflower and chestnuts, which I wrongly imagined as a warm dish. It arrived and looked as unexciting as it tasted. Fresh out of the fridge, the 2 langoustines and 2 mussels were presented on a bed of cold puréed cauliflower with a drizzle of congealed jus. At £15 quite a hefty price! The main of halibut was cooked to perfection and the wild mushrooms were a delight.I chose pear with walnut ice cream and date cake for dessert. The waiter explained the dish as coming with a pear tatin, which sealed my choice. The pear tatin comprised of half a pear which was barely heated through, let alone caramelised, with hints of savoury. The pastry was hard and rubbery. I didn’t find and date cake, but the walnut ice cream was delicious. All in all it was a nice meal, but with the hefty price tag and restaurant reputation I did expect a much better meal.It may have been the Covid restrictions that contributed to a restaurant lacking in ambience or atmosphere, but there was a fireplace that wasn’t used, candles that weren’t lit and waiters that were perfunctory rather than warm and welcoming.

If you are a seafood lover, this is your place. I’m not, but there is plenty on the menu to satisfy all tastes. Portions are manageable, allowing three or four courses to be eaten in a tasting menu, kind of way. If you just happen to be meandering around the mesmerising, ‘prehistoric’ landscape of the humbling Isle of Skye, do not leave the island until you have visited The Three Chimneys. Tucked away in the north western corner, this is a high quality ‘restaurant with rooms’. Our first visit and it won’t be our last, for sure. Two small converted cottages - one with 6 beautifully appointed and very comfortable rooms (all with sea view), the other being the domain of their incredibly talented chef, Scott Davies, and his team. The food itself and the service that accompanied it, were that you would expect of a top end restaurant. Wine choices could be better in our opinion, but that’s a nit-pick amidst what was a thoroughly pleasurable dining experience. Roasted Scallops - as you expect from their homeland - were simply sensational. The star of the show was, however, the dessert - 64% dark chocolate, with Jerusalem artichoke and black pepper (yes, that’s correct). My taste buds are still dancing. Don’t miss that one if it’s on the menu. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for and whilst you can expect to see not much change from £500 for DB&B, it is value for money based on our experience and right up there with the very best that Scottish hospitality is famed for. To cap it all off, the location is simply stunning. Hard to describe in words, but a couple of pictures may help.

I have been to the Three Chimneys in the past and had perhaps too high expectation under new management. Our experience wasn't helped by finding that our booking was shifted from an 8pm end, to 7.30pm, and when we were told we could start at 5.30pm, this meant we could sit and have drinks, but our order couldn't be taken until 6pm, giving us 90 mins for the meal. The 3-course meal was fine, but in no way inspiring and the gigha halibut had been much better in other restaurants within the same week. The wines were unexciting and the staff not especially engaged or interested. The Michelin star now seems a distant memory.

Maybe our expectations were too great but given the reputation and prices I'm afraid we found the experience underwhelming. The staff were attentive and helpful but it was disappointing to find the choice of mains limited to two red meat dishes. From subsequent em exchanges I understand their supplier had let them down such that there was no fish option but - really? - on Skye, was there nowhere they could acquire fish even at relatively short notice. The first courses we had were ok, the second course lasagne with lemon was really interesting and pleasant, and the lamb main reached the standard I was expecting. I wish the restaurant - and indeed all restaurants - well in these difficult times but I was left with the feeling that Three Chimneys hadn't done itself justice on the night we visited.

We stayed three nights at the Tomich Hotel to be close to the hiking in Glenn Affric and it was the perfect location to base camp out of for our stay. The weather was quite variable in August so we liked being close to home when the weather would inevitably turn. Glenn Affric is very quiet, we saw very few people in the best way possible and likewise enjoyed the calm of The Tomich Hotel. We were thankful for the pack lunches the hotel chef prepared for us and for hot breakfast in the morning AND dinner in the evening. There is not a lot of other dining nearby so it was nice that everything could be taken care of food wise right at the Hotel. (The cafe next door has wonderful sandwiches and soups in the morning / early afternoon.) If you like peace and quiet and being on the doorstep of incredible scenery and hiking, this is the perfect place for you.

We went here for lunch after a walk. We had a dog with us and we knew the place was dog friendly. Never mind dog friendly: all-round friendly. The service was excellent and pleasantly chatty. The food was great, which was just as well because the portions were huge. I had half a portion of chili nachos with a side of chips. Even the half portion, after a walk on the beach, was more than I could eat and I was tempted to hire a room for a post prandial nap. It's a bit hidden from the A96, so best to get sat nav directions.
