The Thomas Burke JD Wetherspoon in Wigan

Came on today 30/10/24 sat having a drink at 19.34 a member off staff a woman wearing glasses took food out only to handle the customers food which was a burger,too me that not nice and should have taken it back

We visited here as we got completely gridlocked in Tesco’s car park so abandoned the car to get some food instead. First of all, they forgot my son’s glass of milk, which he wasn’t thrilled about. We had to wait until the food arrived to ask if they could get it for him. The BBQ sauce that was given to my partner had something seriously wrong with it. It tasted absolutely revolting, like chemicals. I’m not sure if it was extremely out of date or if it had been contaminated with something, but upon trying it, I had to spit it out. At first she thought they'd mixed up my JD BBQ sauce with hers but my sauce was fine. It was probably the worst Wetherspoons I have visited to be honest. I will make an effort not to return to this one.

A typical, reliable Wetherspoons. Great prices, simple "pub grub" and usually a good selection of well kept beers, HOWEVER on a recent visit ( 1/8/24) there were 40% of the hand pumps out of action!! Usually well worth a visit, but when we tried to order pizzas, we were also told the pizza oven has been out of service for over a month!!! So sad that I have to downgrade from my earlier review. #UPDATE! Things much improved on my most recent visit, so I have reinstated my 5⭐ rating. 👍🍺p. s. The BBQ chicken melt is always a winner.

Safe, lovely beers and a good atmosphere. Beer is still good. Staff are friendly and can't do enough for you. The real ale in recent weeks has taken a turn for the worse. Even the new bar refurbishment hasn't helped. Beer is back to normal. Good again.

I’ve seen a few negative reviews which I genuinely don’t understand. They’re possibly Spoon haters or just sad people wanting to leave a bad comment? So .. we went once again yesterday. Stopped over for food and drinks. How did it go? Typically Spoons if I’m honest and that’s quite boring to admit. Atmosphere was great and lively… food was great (burger with extras & wife had fish). Drinks are like nowhere else with loads of real ales on. I had the Coachhouse Mild & a couple of (ruby) beers I’ve forgotten the name of by Moorhouse. Beautiful!!! Staff? Some people say they are rude. That shocks me. Obviously lies. Staff are ace & work hard too. We had a total of 4 servers - 3 women & a fella. Each was superb, polite & professional. This might all sound OTT but it’s also all true. I’m sick of Spoons haters leaving lies. Come along one day and enjoy a beer and grub. 5* !!!!

Nasty cold full English breakfast. Plate presentation, couldn't be bothered. Just thrown on the plate.

Brilliant pub, staff are really friendly, it's a very clean pub with two small outdoor areas, food was delicious and large sized portions, I had mixed grill 😋 the meat melted in my mouth, highly recommend this pub is also kid friendly.

Sunday, bar untidy, tables dirty and full of dirty glasses.

The amount of staff is too few for the size of venue. The impact being that there are many tables uncleaned, frustrated staff and dirty floors. Staff clearly do their best with what time they have.

This is one of the less fancier Spoons. But don’t let that put you off!! Staff here are dead friendly and we’ve never had a bad meal or drinks. Real ales are usually a selection of 6 or so & I love their Hobgoblin & Moorehouse selection when on. Zero to complain about and I usually love to moan lol A great pub this :)

It's an interesting place, lots of characters and I like sitting and enjoying a bit of a people watch I'm there. I stay in Leigh most months and like a walk to this bar for a bit of a change of scenery.

My friend and I come here regular and order off the app. The service is very quick and always with a smile. Food is good quality, and enjoyable.

Had a small breakfast came cold tasted like rubber sent it back got replacement and that was the same asked for refund and she said she couldn't do anything about that as the food is OK wont be eating ere again

Food is stone Cold , kids pasta wouldn't even give that a dog , staff was rude when i told them, charged full price for half a meal cause kitchen wasn't in full use 🙄 couldn't even warm a microwave meal up

Quite a while since I came to Leigh, after the very first time lockdown event [2020] and the enjoyment of a few time breakfast.

The food was just looking sad. The manager said whats wrong with it? I said look at it. She was clueless so asked for a refund. Not a great service.

Quick, simple. Good old standard weatherspoons. Always meets what you are looking for.

Food was nice. The area was very dirty, I'm assuming they don't have a vacuum cleaner.

Never enough staff on. They aren't flexible with staff hrs to cope with demand. I.e. it's payday weekend so we better put another member of staff on.

Bar og resturant. Typisk god engelsk morgenmad med mange alternativer og ok priser.

Not the largest pub I've visited out of 389 in the JDW chain. Nicely decorated, including an impressive fireplace; small rear garden, and a good selection of ales. I had a Vanilla Mild, pizza with extra chillis and a hot chocolate for around £15. Pleasant service and polite clientele, creating a welcoming atmosphere. It's worth a visit if you're in the area or ticking off 'Spoons

The food was part warm.. Beans barely warm.. Drinks from the machine not hot... And we wanted an all day veggie all day brunch.. But was told they had no veggie quorn sausage... How and why? Bad service.. Not good... Thomas Burke You need to do much better!!!?

Warm enough atmosphere, food is ok, beer choice is good. Place is clean enough and decorated nice enough.

Been in lots of spoons around the country but, without a doubt the staff at the Thomas Burke are the friendliest of any of the spoons we have been in.

Love the view of this place! Love the fire place, very grand. Food was hot and bowl of chips was massive! (Was to me) and it was beer festival too!

Breakfast disgusting ..luke warm. Rubber eggs. Hash browns dont think they seen an oven. Mushrooms..no comment. Cold toast . Recommend avoid

Went in for a post-Parkrun quick, cheap breakfast after Pennington Flash. Our group was given a bit of attitude by the serving staff, despite the fact we were actually buying a decent amount of food and I saw several people who were taking 4-6 person tables for one. The breakfasts were reported by the group as being cold and also 40 minutes late. Staff said there was an understaffing problem, but there was no proper apology or anything just attitude and rudeness. I’m a massive fan of Spoons for cheap brekkies and mornings post-PR but this is probably one of the worst I’ve been in. Would not recommend, there’s plenty of other pubs that do food in the area.

Don't really like complaining about weatherspoons because they are cheap and cheerful, been all over the country and visited a fair few, the thomas Burke is local to us because we live in leigh. Problem is lately we have been served cold food when they should have been hot,and it's a bit of pain when you have to send it back and wait again for it to arrive, we went on Sat, I ordered soup and tuna pannini, which was barely warm, and my wife ordered burger and chip , which was cold,when complained they said they would take it back an cook a fresh meal for us, when the 2nd attempt came back my soup and pannini wasn't hot but warmer and my wife's burger still had the teeth marks in from when she took a bite before, so they have took then both back to the kitchen for 10 mins and tried to warm them up in a microwave, in the end we ate half the meal ant told the waiter who shrugged his shoulders an said sorry, so I don't care what reply or excuse this review will get, we won't be going to this wetherspoons any more.

Cheap drinks friendly staff and OK menus if you want cheap this is the one

I haven't been to the Thomas Burke for about 7 years, because the last time I was there it was not a pleasant place to spend any time and certainly not whilst in company with my wife!! Too many idiots and zero control!! Yesterday however, I was very pleasantly surprised to find the place has changed so much and so much for the better!! The surroundings are clean and bright. The carpets, tables and chairs are clean and fresh, not piled high with plates and glasses; and the clientele were happy and enjoying a "quiet" drink! On the subject of drinks, the wide selection of beers on tap is excellent, with some really nice craft beers and real ales as well as a good selection of lagers and cider. And the prices are ridiculous!! Averaging only about £2.50 a pint!! The "Full Whack" 6% abv was sublime! There's also a wide range of wines and spirits available and the staff are friendly and very helpful. Rachel, was particularly welcoming and watching her and the team working, it's no wonder the place is in such good shape. We didn't eat, but there is food available and this looked decent standard pub grub and looked and smelled great! All in all a wonderful surprise return! I will definitely be going back soon! Well worth a visit!!

Been here quite a few times, we see a lot of food on the floor, dirty tables and can take a while to get drinks. Food and service is good.

Pretty much the same as all other wetherspoons establishments. Cheap beer and cheap food. You pay for what you get. Don't moan if you're steak isn't cooked the way you asked it's a spoons for god's sake.

Called in for a quick pint of Guinness & a pizza. Food was nice well presented & hot.All the staff I came into contact with where polite & helpfull.I would recommend this establishment for food & drink.Good prices great choice & a nice pub.Will be returning in the near future.

Well I am here now it's my birthday I ordered 4 of the new flavours shots the bar staff spilt my shots on the way to my table and the manager said its bot her fault, like it was my fault the paying customer, she did give me a new shot to replace but only after I was told it was my fault her bar staff spilt my drinks.

Not my local spoons but wishing it was!! Staff really friendly, food piping hot! Really impressed. The young lady who brought our food on Sunday afternoon was proper helpful!! Even though it was busy didn't seem it, proper chilled!!

Zero atmosphere, food is shocking and the staff well I don’t wish to comment. As a pub in the heart of Leigh you need to put yourself out there more, apart from cheap prices which attracts everyone I would rather pay that little bit more and have an atmosphere or at least allow the staff to talk to customers !

Both coffee machines broke , I reported them and it took 15 minutes for a member of staff to come to 1 of them, half an hour after they tried to sort it I left.

Currently in Thomas Burke been here an hour most tables have been left dirty with plats and food on not even busy 3 behind bar who do not want to clean. They have even turned APP of so they do not have to do drinks from it. Wheret the lazy manager to sort it

Great little Wetherspoons pub set in Leigh. The building is an old cinema and had the usual Wetherspoons charm. Food was good and staff were friendly. Very enjoyable visit

I ordered porridge with strawberries. Porridge was cold and still tasted powdery as it hasn't been cooked long enough. Returned it to be put in the microwave, it was returned cooked and hot. Next problem.... strawberries had been either sliced with the same knife being used to slice onions or on the same chopping board as onions - all you could smell and taste was onions. How difficult is it to prepare packet porridge and to slice strawberries? 🤔

My food was frozen and cold couldn't eat it

Had a lovely Jalfrezi curry with Naan and freshly made poppadoms. ALSO a mixed grill. Excellent and good value for money with a free double brandy. Atmosphere was calm but with a slight buzz about it. Good mix of company. Excellent surroundings and the staff are fabulous, courteous, helpful and hardworking.

Ok most of the time, but when there are families with screaming kids it is a bit annoying, but good value for money like most wetherspoons are.
