The Thatched Inn in North Devon

If you want great food, good service and a decent drink you really should visit this gem of a pub. Paul and his staff are super friendly and go above and beyond to cater to your needs! The food is excellent, Paul (the owner) does most of the cooking and he is a superb chef! We have been visiting this establishment for many years now and we are always greeted as friends. Cannot recommend The Thatched Inn enough!!

Great seafood, friendly service

Food was good but the service was really slow, over an hour for our food to arrive. The beer garden was a bit tatty. Not brilliant

I haven't tried the food yet but many have and I'm told it's good. A nice beer garden and nice choice of real ales. I usually stop in with my dog and sit in the garden with a beer, inside does not allow dogs unfortunately.

My wife thinks this place is haunted, probably right

Wonderful staff, great drinks, great food, great venue, good atmosphere. Super clean toilets. Couldn’t ask for more. We were almost put off by the their website which says to book, no parties of more than 6 due to the small kitchen, etc etc. their website said there were no reservations available on the day. We gambled that this was down to how they’d set it up rather than it being full and walked up and got a table easily. They have an upstairs for additional seating and a good sized beer garden. Staff were lovely and I can recommend the mussels and the bid off cheesecake. My son said the halloumi burger was the best burger he’d had in ages. I would 100% recommend and would return on future visits.

First class steak.. Chicken dish also very tasty.. Staff vet friendly.. The pub is a gorgeous little thatched inn with lovely beer garden.

Excellent food, good local beer selection and a nice atmosphere with friendly, helpful staff. Recommended. We were a group of 8, mixed ages and all enjoyed our visit.

Lovely food when it arrived but waited well over an hour for starters and other diners were moaning about wait times, did affect the experience.

I walked past the chef and asked him what he would order if he was eating there tonight and took his advice and what an inspired choice it was. The seafood linguine was sublime, king prawns cooked to the point of perfection and bursting with flavour. The Lemon sole absolutely divine, couldn't fault the food at all. Dog friendly too , if I had one quibble it would be the bar staff at the hatch were a little overwhelmed when it got busy. All in all a very pleasant evening

Fantastic little gem just on outskirts of town.. highly recommend the Devon crab and mussels. Absolutely divine food and friendly staff.

Pleasant pub with some local ales. A bit quirky - genuinely thatched roundhouse. Good beer garden. Food available at certain times - not tried on this occasion but one to consider for the future. Service good.

Stopped in here for a couple of pints in the way to Hele from Ilfracombe. Very friendly staff and a fine selection of beers. Highly recommended.

Was so looking forward to eating at the pub after a lovely day in Ilfracombe. Got there, no food till 5pm, dog not allowed inside and no hot drinks! Outside was beautiful looking at the thatch roof however inside didn't reflect the olde worldy style. Parking awful. Very disappointingly we left.

Lovely place ..food was good ...a long wait though only 1 very pleasant young lady behind the bar and 1 chef ..needs attention

I can’t recommend this pub highly enough ,we had to move our booking back due to travel problems at the last minute but the staff were so accommodating and friendly . The food was delicious and promptly brought out. If you are in the area go here!!!

Fairly busy outside for 6pm trade, most people had a dog with them. We only had drinks, not food. There was a serving hatch, which was very useful as dogs weren't allowed inside. I didn't notice any water bowls provided for dogs, but all pups seemed happy.

We went for an evening meal here because it said they were dog friendly. We had our 4 year grandson with us and found to our dismay when we arrived that dogs were not welcome inside. We all sat in the garden and ordered our food. It took 45 minutes for the food to arrive. It was cold outside by the time it came and our grandson was tired of waiting and no longer hungry. When we asked if the food was coming they said that they had a very small kitchen and the restaurant always took priority. I have to say the restaurant had only a couple of people eating so I'm not sure why we're weren't served quicker. We were all cold and fed up by the time the ( very average) food came. Not a good experience!! Saying you are dog friendly was a little misleading. Dogs welcome outside would be a better statement. Sorry but can't recommend this pub. 👎

Popped in for coffee ended up with wine. Ahh, watcha gonna do? Pretty little place with a gastro pub type menu (we didn't eat although I would love to try their blue cheese burger) and a decent wine list. Unusually for a Devon pub they don't allow dogs inside (my sister took hers home before joining us). It was too chilly to sit outside, I assume they'd be ok in the little garden. Staff were really cheerful and helpful. If you're driving I think you can park at the Ilfracombe Swimming Pool carpark opposite for free. I will definitely visit again to sample more of the interesting wine list and try that burger!

Went here for Sunday lunch on 07/04/24. Great food and drinks provided. Staff friendly and efficient. Service fairly quick. Highly recommend

Excellent place. The food was lovely and service was great, with a warm welcome. Well worth a visit.

No dogs allowed so had to sit outside. As cold only stayed for one drink but would have loved to stay for more. Always surprises me why allow children that can be incredibly mucky but not dogs.

Nut roast from frozen, boil vegetables, salty fast food style fries, left feeling slightly sick. Disappointing food I expected better upon walking into such a beautiful old building.

Had a fabulous Sunday lunch here today. Lovely pub, very friendly and helpful staff. The roast was so so good, perfect roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese and plenty of gravy! A rarity! So glad we found you and we will be back on our next trip here!

We enjoyed a fantastic Sunday roast on 5th of November. Excellent sized portions the beef was superb. We warned them in advance that I was disabled and were given a table by the door. Staff were very attentive and friendly. No disabled toilet but they were easily accessible and as I do not require a wheelchair I was able to access the outside toilet . Heartily recommend this wonderful pub for a great dining experience.

Fantastic service - large, last minute table booking due to walking out of another local restaurant, they just couldn't have been more accommodating or professional. Definitely worth a visit! Thank you so much for a great night.

Absolutely incredible place. Great food, super accomodating to us booking a table for ten at short notice and went above and beyond to make sure that everyone was comfortable in our variously neurodivergent party and even to spend ages at the end helping us to divvy up the bill. Absolutely no hesitation in recommending them, will definitely return next time I am in the area!

We got there a few minutes later, and where greeted by a lovely gentleman who was very understanding of my sons needs being autistic and away from home food can be a difficult thing to navigate. The two female servers we just amazing all 10 of us. The food was to beautiful and to be honest it didn't take a massive time for it to arrive, the kitchen is small and only one chef on that day I believe. We waited under half an hour from order to arrival, I have waited in spoons longer!!! Every one made us feel welcome and relaxed just wishes we lived closer as would be back in a heart beat.

A lovely little thatched roof pub/restaurant with lots of history. Called in here for dinner whilst on a mini break in Ilfracombe. Staff were very friendly and welcoming and food delicious. We had 2 courses and were too full for a pudding Plenty of free parking too

What an amazing Sunday Lunch! Plentiful braised beef that literally melted in your mouth. Accompanied by yorkshire pudding. Cauliflower cheese, roast carrots and parsnips, broccoli, sublime roast potatoes and the tastiest gravy. A real treat. Although the pub is small inside it has a large outdoor space , weather permitting. The staff were warm and welcoming. A lovely experience . Would advise booking ahead for Sunday lunch.

Popped in on the off chance of a table for Sunday lunch and friendly staff advised they could accommodate us later in the day. Lovely cosy pop and very traditional with good selection of drinks available. We decided to eat outside as weather was good and opted for roast chicken and roast pork dinners. Both served piping hot and looked and smelt amazing. Great choice of roasted veg (parsnips and carrot) with lots of crispy roast potoroos and home made Yorkshire puddings and gravy. Both dinners were absolutely delicious. Bar staff, landlord and waiting staff were all very friendly and welcoming. This is a lovely place just outside of town but easily accessible with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. 10/10 and we will certainly recommend to others visiting this lovely town. Didn’t get chance to say thanks to landlord/manager when we left so thanks very much for a lovely meal.

Stopped here for a drink, incredibly quaint. Service through a hatch to the beer garden on a hot day. Inside it’s magnificent wood panelling and am open fire. Would be a great local.

We eat here and we enjoyed our food we prebooked as it was school holidays! Really good selection of beers on tap Child friendly and provided us a highchair Would come back again reason for 4* and not 5 was my food wasnt piping hot but I didn't suffer from any illness or anything so I wouldn't say this was a major issue would come again though for sure

We found this pub on our visit to Ilfracombe last week. What a gem, food was fresh, tasty and hot. Service very friendly and all in all brilliant relaxing atmosphere. We definitely will be back again, when we go back to Ilfracombe.

Young chap behind the bar was attentive and friendly. Food came on time. Chicken shawarma was decent if a little dry. Decent beer range on tap. Would eat here again.

We visited The Thatched Inn this week for the first time. We were greeted with a warm welcome, followed by communication about the pub being short staffed, if only other pubs would display such excellent communication! Our food was banging arrived promptly, was fresh, utterly delicious and great value for money! Thank you for such a lovely evening! Jacob was a super example to the rest of the team who were also on point!!! We’ll be back!!!

We had a beautiful evening at the Thatched Inn, enjoyed the atmosphere and food upstairs. The staff were really helpful and friendly.

This is a nice place to eat, but the service needs to improve quite a lot. Food was good but took too long to arrive especially the desserts.

I hate to write a bad review, but we have just waited nearly 90 mins for food based on a 30 min perceived wait. No apology or explanation and told that it’s down to management to respond to our feedback. However, the management did not wish to discuss our grievances. So we left deeply unhappy.

Very good food , and a pleasant indoor and outdoor seating area. There is only a very small kitchen which limits the menu slightly, but the options available are fresh, well cooked and presented.

Lovely relaxed, pub. Vegan food was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend.

We were staying nearby, ready to catch the ferry to Lundy the following morning. The Thatched Inn does a great job if you set your expectations to match what it offers. It's a pub which provides very good food from a very small kitchen. It does NOT offer giant pub meals from the standard burger / fish and chips pub menu. The service is friendly but food can take 30 or 40 minutes to appear. This isn't a problem if you want a relaxed evening in a pub with good draft beer. For meals it is definitely worth booking and the kitchen closed at 8.00pm on the night that we were there. We'd go back without a second's thought.

Sunday beef roast was succulent and the strawberry cheesecake was delicious. Service was good and welcoming.

After 2 previous bad meals in Ilfracombe we were hoping it couldn’t get any worse. Well to our relief we had a really good experience at the Thatched Inn. There was a good atmosphere with most tables taken. We were attended to straight away and our drinks arrived straight away. My husband said it was the best pint he’d had in a long time. Our food order was taken and we didn’t have to wait very long for our order to arrive. All the food we ordered was beautifully presented and of good quality. We really enjoyed our food and visit to this pub. If only we had come here first. We would highly recommend the food here!!

The pub was within easy walking distance of where we were staying in Ilfracombe so was an easy choice to visit without taking the car. It's unusual to find a thatched pub just outside the centre of town but that just adds to it's charm....

As a vacationer it is granted that I have limited resource for comparison but this is an absolutely fantastic spot for drinks or food. We had sunday lunch and the portions were massive! Food was excellent and I can genuinely say we had some of the best service we've ever had in Britain.

Booked a table here for a Sunday roast whilst on holiday with our friends. Had 3 x beef & 1 veggie roast & it was superb! Best roast out we’ve had. Good portions of meat. The veggie option was tasty too. Had some Thathers Haze...

We got there just before 5 and waited for food to start at 5, we ordered and waited nearly an hour for our food. We ordered a steak which was £28, the steak was nice but very basic for the money - you an get a much better meal down the road We sat outside which was nice and so can't tell you if the service is any different but staff brought our food out, put it down in a grump and walked off - maybe he was having a bad day.

Where does this place get its positive reviews from? Has all the ingredients for success but woeful management and a chef clearly having a bad day add up to a shockingly poor experience. Food so ordinary it’s not worth commenting on. The saving grace was...

Limited menu but good food, nice atmosphere were we were sat in the garden. Lovely staff, made allowance for me as I wanted surf and turf. Steak was perfect, however limited choice of desserts and whiskies. Highly recommended, best book ahead.

This pub held great expectations but sadly didn’t meet any. The young lady who greeted us was lovely as was the lady who took our order. There seemed to be a massive problem with the kitchen/chef…. Who really seemed as if he didn’t want to...

Fantastic little pub, the fish was beautiful. The kitchen Closes at 8 and it was well past 8 when my son decided that he wanted something different to eat and they very kindly prepared it for him!

What a fantastic place! I chose this pub as we could walk to it from our hotel and it had a great choice of fresh fish and locally sourced food! The service was fantastic, all the staff were helpful both on the phone and when we arrived, nothing was too much trouble despite me phoning to say we were going to be a little later than planned for my booked table. The publican Paul and his wife Fiona were charming and welcoming! Would definitely recommend this pub for food, drinks, and friendly atmosphere!
