Visited here a lot as a child so decided to pay a visit with the family for a carvery today. Quickly served at the bar and given tokens to collects our food. Beef, turkey and pork on offer, I had a bit of each. The food wasn’t bad but the potatoes were quite undercooked, the Yorkshire puddings were awful, huge burnt rocks, totally inedible and unfortunately the food was luke warm. Meat was lovely as was the gravy and the cauliflower cheese. Great atmosphere in the pub but the food was a bit of a let down.

We stopped in for lunch after being at the train station. To be honest, if it hadn't been a little late for lunch we probably would have left after seeing the prices. It was £12.95 for a sausage baguette. A portion of chips was over £5. Coffees £4.50. It was a menu with a lot of options but most main meals sat between £16 and £20. The food itself just didn't seem worth the high prices. The sausage baguette had a very budget and tasteless sausage. Albeit being a large portion, it would have benefited from being smaller and better quality. The onions piled on top were just quite...wet. I had a jacket potato which was fine. But for £11 you kind of expect more. A lovely garden space and great views. You order at the bar so I can't really comment on the staff, they seemed friendly. My advice would be to go someone else for food.

We went down for a carvery, which was very nice even though it was not very hot, might have something to do with the carvery being directly inside the front door 🤪 unfortunately when going to get your carvery you have to battle with the incoming visitors which isn't great, on the day we went it was windy so dust from the carpark was being entrained in with the visitors so guessing my food had a nice covering on it 🤣 added to the flavour maybe... My kids had food of the menu and loved every mouth full and the deserts were amazing. My suggestion would be to move the carvery or ditch it as it's not an overall winner due to its location, which I realise is by the kitchen but doesn't change the issues we had with it! Wouldn't go again for carvery but definitely for everything else as it's a lovely place, nice atmosphere, lovely staff, nice and light with a nice garden and outlook.😁

We visited on Monday 17th March. The food was great like usual and really generous portions. However, we did not like the look of the young child running around behind the bar.. it seemed completely inappropriate. We think it was the waitress’s daughter? Perhaps this should be looked into, a bar is definitely not the environment for children.

My wife was after a Sunday dinner and fell very lucky securing the last Turkey dinner (it was massive) nice and hot and a good quality plate full. I missed out and went for the BBQ ribs and another plate full of meat arrived at the table along with chips and coleslaw. I gave it my best shot and sadly I was beaten by another full plate of delicious food. Hands covered in a thick sticky sauce which hand wipes were unable to defeat I had to wash my hands in the gents before surrendering to the Ribs. Lovely Pub/Inn with a nice atmosphere and customer focused staff. If you are passing by and feeling peckish drop in and refuel 👍

I dropped in for lunch after a walk around Heddons Mouth. It’s a nice place, dog friendly (in the bar), so my fox terrier and I were happy. I ordered the French Onion Soup and the Exmoor Beast burger, which was massive! Certainly couldn’t eat all of it! The soup was delicious, piping hot and very welcome after a long walk. The burger was also great, lovely chips, onion rings and all. Look forward to returning.

Massive price rise across the board in the last 2 weeks. Used to be a reasonably priced menu, now I don't think it is value for money. A coffee is now £4.50, up by 20%. Pubs are struggling and I don't think these rises will help. Simple cheesy chips up by £2.

We recently dined at The Old Station House Inn, and while the setting was undeniably beautiful and the staff were friendly, the overall experience was far from satisfying. The food was shockingly overpriced for the quality offered. It was evident that some of the dishes had been reheated from a previous service—perhaps even last Sunday’s lunch. The swede was bown and congealed, the carrots were wrinkled and dehydrated, and the tiny portion of Savoy cabbage was similarly wilted and unappetizing. The peas were undercooked and unpleasantly hard. To top it off, many of the other dishes appeared to have been purchased from a well-known local frozen food supplier, lacking any hint of fresh preparation or culinary effort. Adding to the disappointment was the requirement to pay before ordering, which left us feeling somewhat rushed and skeptical about the experience ahead. The owner did offer a voucher to cover two meals as compensation, which was a kind gesture. However, given the subpar quality of the food, we couldn’t help but wonder—why would we return for the same experience? Despite the picturesque surroundings and the warm demeanor of the staff, the meal fell far short of expectations. For the premium price, we had hoped for fresh, well-prepared dishes, not reheated leftovers and frozen food.

I visited here on the 29th of December 2024. I booked this the same day. I arrived at the restaurant had a look at the food and it looked okay. The gravy pots were covered. We went to the bar and payed for 3 carvery’s and was told to sit on table 6. We then went to get our food. There wasn’t very many veg options and the gravy was absolutely disgusting. ( there was carrots, cabbage and swede which looked and tasted awful). Roast potatoes were not stocked the chief told us they were coming but they never arrived. We asked the chief where was the gravy. He said it was at the end and we thought it was bread sauce due to the colour and thickness of the gravy. One of the gravy pots was full and congealed. We were told it was homemade gravy and no bisto crap. We then went to the table to eat our lunch. We felt sick by the taste of the gravy but unfortunately we had already put this over our dinner. One person had eaten all of it due to being really hungry and the rest was inedible. While eating our dinner we constantly saw the chief putting his hands over the food to test and eat the food. Then we were approached by one of the staff asking if our food was ok. We said no it was cold and there was issues with the gravy. She then offered us a pudding which we felt we didn’t want due to wanting a nice hot dinner. At the end we took one of the meals to the bar explaining we could not physically eat it. Our response was that they would take the food away to give to the manager. They then refused to hand it back after asking to see the manager. She said she would take it to him, on her return she said that there could not be any refunds due to the veg being eaten. Couldn’t see manager due to him leaving. And then the chief put the remaining food in the bin after asking for it back due to wanting to get photos of this. We were then offered £7.50 back from a £45 food bill. The customer service was awful and would definitely not recommend!!!! Very very poor! If there was an option to put 0 stars I would.

I recently visited the old station inn. It used to be one of my favourite places to eat. Sadly I will not be darkening the door step again. The staff were good, but to wait almost an hour and a half for two plates of food was ridiculous. The pub wasn't overly busy, so I couldn't understand the delay. When the food arrived, haddock and chips for my other half, and gammon steak for me. The haddock was very greasy, and lacking flavour, the gammon was a bit on the tough side, and again lacking flavour.

The pricing is reasonable, there are lots of options for different meals types and lots of options for kids as well. The restaurant is well-maintained and organized. OLD REVIEW. Great food. Great staff. Can't wait to go back. EDIT … after going back for the first time since changing owners we were sad to find the restaurant we once loved was no more. The prices have shot up (somewhat understandable given the state of economy) but the quality of the food has gone down and the atmosphere has changed. We were charged £8 for a starter of halloumi fries and were horrified when 5 strips of barely warm and very thinly sliced halloumi showed up with a barely existent side salad that was clearly left over from lunch service. My partner had a decent steak baguette from the special board and my son had decent chicken nuggets (hard to mess up let’s be honest) but my steak (8oz rump) was a poor quality cut and not cooked to standard we had been accustomed to at the station inn in previous years. When we complained about the starter (or lack there of) we were not offered a refund or a complimentary drink or anything, the girl behind the till said she would pass on our feedback to the “chef” but I think we all know it went straight in the bin. Desert was lovely and a nice way to end what had been a sadly average but rather expensive meal. In summary they food is “ok” but not representative of the price charged and a far way from the quality of the previous management. Sad really when it always used to be such a good place for a family meal. Perhaps it was an off day. I am sure we will try again one day but as of writing this we were a bit disappointed.

NEW VISIT REVIEW: I’m not sure what happened to this place, used to adore this experience. The fact that 2 tiny pizzas, one burger and some chicken and a very sad looking pork loin with some cola and beers comes to £114.00 is quite frankly disgusting. £114 for literally the most basic and loveless food is very insulting. OLD REVIEW FROM A FEW YEARS AGO: Ill start this off by saying I was really expecting to go into this and have a low standard. But i can whole heartedly say that holy crap. Wow. Let's start the break down: Drinks: lack of a larger selection which is unfortunate, very limited selection for any avid larger drinkers. Dulux hot chocolate was lovely. Unable to tell the brand of the hot chocolate powder used. Starter: halloumi fries - absolutely lovely. Not over cooked nor rubbery, fresh salad complemented very well by the supplied sauce. Price point is just the tiniest bit high. But my goodness very impressed with this. Main 1: beef burger accompanied by chips, with additional add on of bacon and cheese and side of coleslaw(these are seperately charged) - The presentation of the burger was somewhat sad, however the taste of the whole ensemble was fantastic! The chips are lovely and the coleslaw is homemade, thick and creamy. Just fantastic. Couldn't fault this meal. Main 2: medium rare sirloin steak - Perfectly cooked plus the addition of chips and coleslaw. Cooked to perfection. Overall a lack of salad on both meals unfortunately. Desserts: hot chocolate ice cream with icecream - I have no idea what it was or why but I wasn't feeling this, it lacked the punch the other two courses gave. The same with the syrup sponge pudding with custard. Still nice but didn't compare to everything above. Server: Steph - what a lovely, cheerful and professional person. An absolute delight. Give her a raise. An asset to the staff force. Aesthetics: they have been the same for the past 80 years. Slight modernisation from personal interest but what a lovely parcel trapped in time. can see why they Keep it as is. Absolutely lovely experience all around.

Boiling hot day, what a wonderful place to stop. The views are outstanding. Excellent beer and friendly service. Can get very busy, but once you've been there, you would understand why.

Love this place. Always visit when I am visiting my parents. They love it too. Always friendly staff and great atmosphere. Gluten free menu available and highly recommended. Dog friendly. They have a lovely garden with great views and a play area for the little ones. The car park is not very good if you have a low car 😳 quite pit holey but we'll worth the slow dodging holes to have the great food!

Signage very misleading. We thought that they were dog friendly but large sign saying no dogs in the restaurant. Not having visited before we left as we felt we would not be welcome.

Went for mother's day lunch with the family... We all had the carvary nice selection of meats, roast potatoes excellent... Carrots and broccoli and a bit of swede available.... Carvaries can be very much hit or miss, this one was a bit under whelming to be honest... It was OK. Price was OK. 2 kids and 2 adult carvaries plus a drink eack for 57 quid

Surprisingly good. I expected this to be a real tourist establishment. Food is good and at the correct price. Play area for kids,,,was a railway station and might be again soon if certain people get their way....close to the Linton steam railway to take you to the coast...leave your car here.......

Stopped for a drink. Staff friendly and helpful, just as it was 20 years ago! A genuine country pub, a large one at that, with plenty of local flavour. Will be back again.

This lovely pub is very clean inside with good views over Exmoor. The food was on the expensive side but came quickly and was piping hot.

Lovely food, the best I had whilst staying in Illfracombe. Dog friendly aswell. The service was great and considering we were a large group, the wait for food was decent aswell. Highly recommend this pub!

The thatched inn has got beamed ceilings throughout with a real fire burning bright and warm. A heaven to be in on a rainy and windy seaside day. We had chicken schnitzel and hake. Both were generously served and superbly cooked. You can choose 2 sides with each main and we were just spoit for choice.
