We all thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Thatch! A very warm welcome by the fantastic serving team, everyone we interacted with were so happy. My son wanted the Thai red curry but was worried it would be too spicy, they asked the kitchen for a taster for him to check which I thought was brilliant. He ended up eating the whole dish and absolutely loved it! I had a fish curry which was gorgeous. All meals for our table of 6 were swift to arrive and consistently good. If you are lucky enough to be in the area don’t miss out! Booking recommended as it does get busy. Thanks to the brilliant team for a lovely evening.

This is a very generous 3 star rating based on two visits we made.. the generous rating is based on the curries which were really nice but the other dishes were really unexciting. The pork belly turned out to be a roll of pork loin and was completely dry. Two waitresses gave us very good service but one member of the front of house staff was particularly rude - telling us to go to the bar as our table wasn't ready then being quick to tell us that we'd be kicked out at 8pm because they needed the table back then. We went last year and really enjoyed it ( I posted a good review on here) but it's really gone downhill.

We have been visiting the Thatch for many years when in Croyde both for accommodation and for meals. However, we haven’t been for a couple of years and have to say we really noticed how it appears to have declined generally. There were several empty tables both inside and out, full of used glasses and crockery but with staff walking around between it but not attempting to clear away! Also, we noticed the number of filthy windows and both the log burners, although not in use during the summer but absolutely covered in dust and cobwebs! Such a shame as certainly not up to the standard of the Thatch that we remember. The coffee was very good though.

Visited here for my partners birthday. As we are not local (on holiday ) I contacted the restaurant in advance to see if they could do any sort of surprise for her birthday & they were really helpful. Although me bringing a cake was not feasible, they brought out her dessert with a candle and sang happy birthday. The meal overall was delicious and very filling ( I enjoyed the chicken, bacon & leek pie, my partner had hake, for deserts we had cheesecake brownie which were both large) and as above the staff were really polite and courteous. I would recommend this place.

Came to Croyde for a weekend with friends. Had booked a table for 7pm for 14 of us and we waited over 2 hours for food to be served. One person in the group is diabetic and needed to get sweets out to keep her blood sugars level while another 2 members of the group were heavily pregnant. We then came back for breakfast the following morning and waited over half an hour for some meals to come out while others had come out and had eaten. The food is lovely and it’s a great atmosphere in the pub but the food service is so so slow.

Menu said ‘creamy porridge’- what arrived was as far from creamy as you can imagine. Clumpy to the point it was hard and powdery. Even after pouring all the milk which arrived with my tea, it still was unable to achieve anywhere near a creamy consistency. Very unimpressed. 23rd June 2024.

Ordered fish & chips. Batter was soggy & very oily. Peas were not cooked properly and a very dried out & rotting piece of lemon was included in my plate - hidden under the fish when served. We had to pay when we ordered so felt like we'd been ripped off. Won't eat there again. We've just come back from a trip to Europe where the food & service standards were so much better than we seem to have allowed as acceptable back here. V sad

The staff seemed really lovely. However when I received my meal I ate some of it and then realised my chicken was completely raw. The waitress took it away and the manger apologised but assured me twice that it was definitely cooked. However from the picture attached it clearly is raw. Although a refund was offered for them to say it was cooked is a joke and refresher training needed for the manager and kitchen team on how to cook things correctly.

For years I’ve loved this pub, so was really looking forward to visiting today now that restrictions have been lifted. I couldn’t wait to order a beer at the bar and enjoy the holiday vibe. No such luck. It was totally sterile and lacking atmosphere. One way systems still in place, no bar service, big spaces between tables. Truly awful. At best it felt like a Harvester, if I’m being honest, more like eating at motorway services. Food was ok, but I remember it being so much better. This was once a gem of a pub. Please save it before it’s too late!

We have been visiting the thatch for over 25 years and never been disappointed until this year. The Famous Nachos are a real let down, much smaller portion and Rocket replaced refreshing iceberg. Caesar salad had cucumber and olives yet no parmigiano or chicken and only a smidge of dressing. Kids menu was very beige , chips with everything no veg at all. It’s such a shame , the service was still very good but the food wasn’t up to the usual standards and we ate there on 3 occasions so it wasn’t a one off

The long and short of the story is that this restaurant will always succeed due to it's location, They will turn tables and fill them again quickly. The food was excellent- no grumbles there! What lets it down is the service. We had a table booked and arrived and waited for ten minutes at the welcome desk to be seated. During this time, a number of staff saw and made eye contact with us, two of which were clearly senior members of staff). Not one said hello, or even a cursory "someone will be with you in a minute!"When we were eventually seated it was then not communicated that we had been to our waitress. To her absolute credit, fifteen minutes later she came and apologised and took our orders. Sadly however that was the last we saw of her...Different servers each time and no real care in whether or not we had enjoyed ourselves or were happy with our food. The kitchen here is clearly top notch. While I appreciate that there may well be a system in place where the manager is the one who seats tables.... none of the waiting staff seemed particularly attentive or happy. Like I said at the start of my review, I note many others have raised this issue and no doubt it will make no difference to the success of the restaurant. However, for us, the welcome you receive when you enter an establishment will always stick in your mind and for that reason, we will not return.

Visited here with my family (2 adults 2 children) during our camping visit. Although we didn't a table they accommodated us with ease. The waiter was very direct and gave the impression he was a little fed up. We asked to change my son's salad for peas and my daughter's coleslaw for peas (they like peas!) but they wouldn't accommodate this and charged us £1 extra for each bowl! However the food came quickly and was reasonable quality. Overall it was a little disappointing given the expensive prices. I don't mind paying but I expect better service and a little flexibility in the menu for that. Wouldn't return

The waiter was excellent and served us quickly knowing that we had small children to entertain and feed.... The food was great quality and massive portions including the children's meals. Firstly I researched the Thatch to ensure it had a car park only to find it covered in tables on arrival - tables that weren't being used! Hubby had fish n chips which were sublime, the fish was so light & moist. I had the philly cheese steak sandwich but jeez it must have been an old cow. The meat was so chewy, I couldn't eat it. My hubby kindly swapped meals half way through so I didn't go hungry. Nice place but misleading on the car parking & poor quality meat.

Ate here 3 times on a short stay in Croyde. The restaurant is always very busy and usually fully booked. The food varies from being mediocre to average. The last meal I had was a chicken burger which is called a spicy bird burger. It must have been a baby bird as the burger itself was small and was lost inside the roll! Chips were also under cooked. Cost £14.95! This is basically a fast food outlet with a high through put of orders charging quality restaurant prices for pretty average food. There's not a lot of choice in Croyde for restaurants and demand always outstrips supply hence the high prices.

We had a delicious lunch at The Thatch. We'd booked about a week before we arrived and couldn't book an evening table on the day so went for lunch instead, but we did hear a staff member explaining they only book out half their tables to allow for walk ins so might be worth checking if you can't get a table. I was able to order off the kids menu as I really wanted scampi - very pleased because I don't eat much but often restaurants don't like adults ordering from this menu. The scampi was delicious, as were the chips. My partner had the chicken burger which was apparently great. It was all table service and there was hand sanitizer everywhere and all staff wearing masks so felt very safe. Would definitely recommend

Having eaten at The Thatch previously, I decided that this would be a great place to go for date night!!! Unfortunately what a disappointment! We arrived 15 mins early for our 7:30 booking and were told that because we were early the table we had booked wasn’t available and they would try to find us another table, We would have happily waited the 15 mins if this had been stated to us! We were placed on a table of four in the main walkway to outside, so not only did I have my back to all who past us, which was quite a few, nudges in the back and chair kicked numerous times!! We were also concerned that nearly all the staff were not wearing masks or visors, which I thought was still a legal requirement!! The food was ordered and we received our Starter of Pulled pork nachos, which I have to say was very good, maybe a few too many jalapeños but nice just the same!! Three minutes after finishing the starter, the main meal arrived. Visually the food looked good, unfortunately that is where is stopped! The prices were totally inflated for what was received, my partner had the Chicken and Chips priced at £18.95 and it was very dry and not very appealing, I went with The BBC burger again over priced for what was received which amounted too two well over done burgers, bacon strip that wouldn’t be out of place in a certain meal deal sandwich and cheese that resembled Burger sauce from a bottle!! It was dry as old leather and no flavour at all. It wasn’t eaten!!We decided that we wouldn’t stay for desert or coffee and asked for the bill. It was also bought to the assistants attention that the quality wasn’t there and the food was either over cooked or at best cooked with the starter and left on the hot plate until we had finished the nachos! It was met with a ‘’Ill let the chef know you weren’t happy’ So overall a very disappointing night of food and throw in the highly priced drinks, we could have easily gone to a drive thru, spent less and got better quality!!

Ate three times here when we came on holiday, family of 5. Food is consistently good. Dropped a star as on third time of eating here, I'd booked for 4 people instead of 5 but not realised. They tried to turn us away as "couldn't add a chair to a table". I asked to speak to the manager, who also tried to turn us away. Been visiting Croyde for 10+ years and have always visited the Thatch for food and drinks. Always loved the vibe and atmosphere there. Food was always pretty good and have been there often enough in the past.Myself and my grandson visited the Thatch for dinner there on Tuesday 1 June. Sad to say, but it really has gone downhill in my view or was it just an off evening? I appreciate it was busy, as it always is, but our waitress that evening struggled to crack a smile when we were ordering and there was no warm welcome or pleasantries. My grandson ordered fish fingers and chips but had one bite of them and that was enough. How can you go wrong with fish fingers?? I ordered scampi and chips at £13.95, and also struggled to eat any of it. Both the fish fingers and scampi tasted like they’d been cooked in overused oil. We were met by a friendly young man who took us to our table and explained the order system and made sure we checked in to the NHS app, he even explained where the loo was which saves having to wander round looking for them. A really nice lady took our order including making sure we had a bowl of water for the dog, she made recommendations, which we appreciated, we shared the salt & pepper squid to start and then had flame grilled chicken which came with fries, coleslaw, salad and corn on the cob, it was enormous but we tried our best, it was delicious and our dog helped us finish the chicken. When we arrived at the pub, we had to queue out of the door despite being booked in, not the staffs fault I understand but an acknowledgment of our 15 minute wait to get through the door might have been nice. Or even a smile and hello, rather than simply “what name?”. We were seated by the kitchen, not a problem, but I’d rather not have listened to the dance music that they were playing, which drowned out the rest of the restaurant music. The staff were friendly but inattentive, so we only managed to order one drink whilst waiting for our food, and our glasses were empty the entire time we were eating. The menu was reduced, as are most places at present, but the choices weren’t very interesting and turned out to be average pub food that was well overpriced.I would definitely try somewhere else.

We found this online and booked straight away via opentable. Five of us, plus the dog.The Covid precautions were very good and we were all received to find all staff wearing masks, not just shields. Lots of sanitising stations, everything clearly marked and well coordinated. The service was excellent, particularly Ian who was very helpful. A bowl of water for the thirsty dog and even a sausage from the kitchen at the end of the meal for him. We had various food items from the menu and all of them were really good. The burgers were juicy and well-cooked; the Sri Lankan fish curry was delicious. Not cheap, but very nice and much recommended by all of us.

I visited The Thatch on Sunday with my family as we were in Croyde for the weekend, we visit Croyde often and the thatch really is the best pub. They have taken Covid seriously and it’s table service throughout, I’d say it’s best to book ahead. We had a few starters to share, calamari and the bread and olives. Both lush. The kids had a kids roast beef. It was massive! Great value. I had the vegetarian option. I did ask if I could have had the vegan pie but with the vegetarian veg (I like Yorkshire’s and cheese sauce!) but they wouldn’t do it. It was a shame but I went with the veggie truffle pie it came with. It was nice enough. My husband had the pork belly. He enjoyed it. Lovely glass of red to go with it. Bit rushed and service was good. See you again soon I’m sure

I have enjoyed many meals at The Thatch over the last 25 years and I've never had a bad one. Standard pub fare but perhaps a little above average. Fair price. Good service.Covid 19 means they ask you to download the menu on to your phone but I wasn't carrying my phone, so they happily provided paper menus.

We are staying nearby in Croyde, my partner used to come here and eat at the Thatch 20 odd years ago as a child, so her mum booked us a table as a treat. Really cosy and homely inside. The food was good, the veggie burger wasn't to my taste but there was nothing wrong it, it was just me... I wish I'd ordered the chilli! Chips and coleslaw were lovely. Drinks perfect.Really friendly staff too. We were sat near the entrance and the girl hosting was doing an amazing job, she was so funny and friendly and deserves a special mention as she had to dealt with a couple of rude people and some strange and confusing requests regarding seating while we were there. She dealt with it all professionally and with a smile. If we visit this part of the country again we'll definitely be back. Thank you!

My partner and I are here on Sunday. The first impression is that this is a big pub and they have used the space really well for social distancing. Staff wear masks at all times and ensure customers keep their distance. The food here was plentiful and good quality. The nachos were great and the Sunday lunch was packed with veg and flavour, the beef was delicious. I’d like to see the other pubs use The Thatch as an example of how to do this. Top marks.

Visited twice during our holiday. First time was faultless with charming and efficient staff. Lunch was one of the best we’d had anywhere. Returned a couple of days later to have to queue in a narrow passage way whilst the person on the reception desk was trying to master the check in iPad. She tried three times to input data into the track and trace form for people in front of us and we waited 15 mins whilst she did this. Her manner was not pleasant. She showed us our table with a grunt and no smile. A very different experience from the previous visit. In between serving us on reception she started cleaning a table that was half finished - surely not her job whilst ten people were in her reception queueThe chicken fillet was small and dry and not worth the £14. We had planned to eat there every day after our initial meal but we won’t be returning now. What a pity that one member of staff can totally change the experience. But then maybe not her fault that she hadn’t been trained to use the iPad or in meeting and greeting . We also think the queue in the narrow hall way is a Covid risk and perhaps some form of shelter in the outside area would be best for the queue

Love The Thatch, been coming here for years literally, since the 90’s but now for a sensible Saturday lunch. Food was great, I took the halloumi dish with falafels, salad, hummus, felt nearly healthy! The small nachos as pictured are not that small and perfect for 1 for a lunch. Pub well set up for social distancing just felt a bit spaced out so currently lacks some of the places normal buzz. Best come back post Covid times!

It’s such a beautiful establishment. I would recommend for a drink and possibly nachos. The mains are basic and charged at a premium. I went for the crispy squid which I can imagine came out a frozen foods bag from Iceland and deep fried. It was like chewing gum. The lady who seated and served us was great. The next waitress we had probably needs training on how to deliver a good service. We waited ages for our table to be cleaned and actually had to ask in the end as we were left for a considerable amount of time. When we were asked about how was our food, I did mention politely I couldn’t eat the squid as it was overcooked. The waitress then responded looking at my plate I will tell the chef. No sorry or can I get you anything else as I hadn’t eaten.Really wish we didn’t go here for food as it was so disappointing.

Maybe I’m being a little unfair on the establishment for my rating however my experience needs to be shared. We are a group of five visiting the area. We choose to eat at The Thatch based on its reviews. The restaurant was fairly busy, the food come out in prompt time and was brilliant. Unfortunately that’s we’re our fun ends. We were served by two different waitresses. The first, extremely cheerful and very professional. This young lady then left us in the hands of a much younger waitress that clearly had a chip on her shoulder. Now we had zero interaction with her until this moment so her chip on her shoulder was obviously from elsewhere. Every item of food that was put on the table was heavily slammed down. We had to request missing sauces which gave this girl real beef with us. She was nothing less than rude and obnoxious. Incredible childish. Shame as it put a real downer on our whole experience. We politely asked not to have her back at our table. The lady in charge did apologise on her behalf but the young moody lady continued her plight in being rude and obnoxious from a distance. We normally tip well but not this time. We won’t be back thanks to that one single young girl that really needs another job that is not customer facing.

Been to the Thatch hundreds of times - over the years it has been a priority for us during our frequent visits to Croyde. However we weren't sure what to expect given the current situation. But we needn't have worried, everything was done with our safety in mind. There were clear instructions both by email before our visit and on arrival. Service was impeccable, courteous and efficient, and despite a limited menu they were happy to be flexible. All the food was absolutely delicious as always, and I shall dream about the Chocolate Brownie for a very long time to come. Big thanks to everyone. We shall be back!

I have seen others mark down on the reviews all because they are following COVID Guidelines. Unfair. They are doing a great job in managing the current difficult situation and have reduced the amount of tables they normally have available. Making them more socially distanced and safe. I have been visiting croyde for over 40 years and have visited this superb thatched pub many, many times. So feel I can give a fair and balanced view. Pre COVID this pub was a hive of activity and was the local hub for many locals and holiday makers alike. They put on parties and fancy dress and was a great place for everyone to meet. But as per government guidelines they are following it to a very good standard. My wife and I felt very safe.We have visited during the EOTHO scheme in early and late August and also and several times after in September. So please understand my review is with more than a one off experience but with knowledge of the pub/restaurant.I don’t live in the village or have any allegiance to the Thatch. Food-The food was superb and always has been. We can’t even remember any food being provided that fell belowstandard. If we had then we would have spoken to them and I’m sure it would have been dealt with very efficiently. The selection on the menu has been reduced due to COVID and hence some are complaining that there isn’t enough on for their choice. We didn’t have a problem as the specials changed daily and the main menu changed every few days. But basics like burgers/fish were always on there. They catered for vegetarians and Vegans alike as there was always something available for them. Maybe not a great selection but there nevertheless. They are renowned for being a steak/burger and Fish restaurant. The desert menu is now reduced and often only ice cream or a 1 other desert on there available. So this can be improved upon. Pre COVID it was always superb and had a choice of often up to 10 items at a time. Booking a table. You can pop in pre 16:00 and have a drink or food of tables are available. After then you will need to book. Not sure how it’s going to work once they get fully out of peak holiday season tho. This was easy online or via the opentable app. We booked our tables in advance as we could see limited availability on tables once it got to the EOTHO period. There was a sign outside saying there were only booked tables after 4pm, yet people still came in and asked if tables were available. Only to be disappointed. That said, we spoke to staff and was amazed that quite a few “no shows” happened every night with not cancelling. So please help them and cancel If you have too so they can reuse the table. When booking you have the table for 2 hours. Which in our view was plenty of time to order and eat. Pre COVID once you booked a table it was yours for as long as you wanted it! Which many people used to stay all evening having a few drinks. Which is what people are missing. Social evening with family and friends. Phoning the Thatch is vertically impossible as it’s always so busy and goes through to message and can’t leave an answer phone message. That is something they need to rectify and have been made aware of it. Service. The staff are always polite, courteous and respectful. The food and drinks arrived in good time. Atmosphere. There was a relaxed atmosphere and the “rush & hustle” that was their previously was gone. The staff had much more time and appeared relaxed and more importantly very organised. Pre COVID the bar area was often absolutely chokka and many times stood there next to tables who were dining like “sardines in a tin”. Which also made it difficult for the staff to bring meals out to those tables. The bar was always an active area with locals and surfers alike. Which I believe the people in the village and surrounding area are missing. It used to be “the very busy pub/restaurant” that you were prepared to go through because it was always great food. They have put an outside bar area in their car lark if the weather is good then you can have a drink outside. Those tables can’t be booked. But..... I believe that one things settle and government guidelines are relaxed there is a place for it in part to return.Parking. They have put an outside bar area in their car park so there isn’t t any next to the pub only in the main car park in the village. Which is free after 18:00 currently. Our view. The whole experience is much quieter than it was but in some ways was much better but in others felt as though the heart had been ripped out of the place. The food is excellent, beers and ciders always well served. We go for the food and beer but can see how it will effect others if they just want a beer and a socialise.

Had heard good things about this place...and it deserves the good reputation that it has. The staff were helpful (I was a tricky customer who had to change arrangments several times and there wasn't any exasperation or fuss about it, even though it would have been justified). The food was great - I had sea bream and it was one of the nicest meals I have ever eaten in the UK. Again, I was fussy, and the chef could have easily just omitted the ingrediants I fussed over, but instead adjusted it to make sure the meal wasn't compromised. I was really impressed. Others had the steak (which was perfect), and the chilli (also amazing). It was the last day of Eat Out to Help Out, so maybe that swayed our impression a little, but the food really was great. If we had paid the extra we still would have been very pleased!

The food here for the prices they charge is despicable. Frozen chips, frozen squid etc etc ! If there is a shortcut they’ll take it, one of the waitresses is a complete misery and seeing other reviews on here I think it is the same one !! To pay £85 for two adults and two children under 5 for lunch and a couple of drinks is fine if the quality that you receive is worth the price. I’ve had better at a Wetherspoons than here. It is a cash cow designed at extracting as much money from tourists as possible for the least amount of effort. My advice would be to use the many street food vendors around on campsites like Biffens Kitchen, the Sri Lankan pop up on a Saturday night or even the Jamaican at the end of the car park. If you like good food you won’t like the Thatch that’s for sure. If you like a frozen meal for £££’s then this is your place ! Their one saving grace is the burger is ok but for the price, really ??! It’s a burger !! We will never return here for food, ever other than for a drink. I see the manager gets irate at criticism on here which is fine I suppose when you are fully booked no matter what tripe you serve. The Thatch has lost its authenticity, service standards and feels like a lower end canteen frankly. Avoid, go to the chippy, you’ll enjoy it more !
