Visited the restaurant as a hotel guest, the staff were attentive and helpful, there was no judgement when we wanted to order things in an unusual order, prepared a cheese plate to take back to the room :) Beautiful views and lovely decor and atmosphere. We will be back, great little find.

We stayed for three days recently and had a wonderful experience. The staff were all lovely, and the food was superb - every dish! Two things we particularly noticed: the "garnishes" on the dishes were an integral part of the flavour combination, and the things on the plate, although all tasty very good individually, worked even better when eaten together.

We heard this was a fine dining restaurant. This was not our experience. Greeting at main door warm & welcoming. We the day in the bar area for 15minutes of a very empty restaurant. Order taken at the bar?? Odd. Lighting far too bright in bar & restaurant. Felt like a football field. Music totally inappropriate. Try classical or swing instead of 80's favourites. Food ok but too many competiting flavours. This did not allow one combination to shine. Staff inexperienced. Then to top it off....We were overcharged an additional main meal. Time to review the above points & inject some ambience.

We went here twice for lunch in August 2019. 1. On the first trip we only paid for the fixed 3-course £19 menu and the quality was so high we would happily have paid twice as much. To keep the costs down the ingredients were not fancy but the food certainly was. The salmon was exquisitely cooked, the flavours superb and the presentation clean and attractive. 2. On the second trip we paid fine dining prices for the al-la-carte menu. The starters were over-dressed and had no interesting flavours nor good presentation. The mains of duck and lamb were both a disaster. In both cases the meat was very over-cooked, both the BBQ-ed lettuce and braised chicory were a soggy over-cooked wilted mess, both were hugely over-dressed in identical tasteless brown and green sauces. The over sweet chilli lentils dominated the duck. Both meals became boring after the first few mouthfuls and were a chore to finish. Even though we were wowed by the dessert on our first visit we had been thoroughly put off dessert this time, it was as though we were eating at a completely different venue. The head chef here used to be at The Samling and the food there was brilliant then. We assume he was present on our first visit here and the food then was proper fine dining. On our second visit our meals were cooked by his sous chef and he clearly hasn’t a clue how to do fine dining.

We returned to stay at The Ryebeck because we had enjoyed the food so very much on our last visit. The standard of food at this place cannot be praised too highly. Bothevenings started off very pleasantly in the cosy little bar that has a lovely friendly manager and an excellent range of drinks. On our first night I had a delicious plate of lamb served on a fabulous risotto of bulgar wheat with fresh peas and beans - apologies for my prosaic description. The other half started off with crab and scallop ravioli served in crab bisque followed by roasted fillet of cod in a presentation involving smoked mussels. I don't normally take photos of food and mobile phones are discouraged here but everything looks so beautiful I have broken my own rule. Having admired a delicious looking dessert on Twitter the sous chef Ollie was kind enough to make it for me and the confection of coffee ice cream in a chocolate dome with orange sorbet and honeycomb was a delight. Next night I ordered the great value £25 set meal featuring chicken parfait, pork with creamed leeks and roasted spring onions and coconut rice pudding. The other half had a salad starring a deep fried poached egg which he adored followed by sea bream with a broccoli and cauliflower couscous. He hadn't ordered a dessert but Ollie Fitton presented us with a surprise plate of the gorgeous dessert he prepared for the semi final of NW Young Chef Competition. He is through to the final. Enough said. I know this is very long winded but hopefully it will encourage some of you foodies out there to try this place. Sorry that we missed Chef Nick Edgar this time but chefs deserve a night or two off and he can be confident his kitchen is in good hands.

I had purchased a Groupon voucher for a 2 course lunch for two with a glass of Prosecco. The place is lovely, very understated, spotlessly clean and with a relaxed and friendly feel. We had a drink outside on the terrace which on a sunny day was most enjoyable. We had the roast beef dinner, which was very tasty. Don't be too shy to ask for extra gravy, as it came with a tiny jug, but the staff are happy to bring more. I had the Pannacotta for dessert and my husband had the Stilton which came with Lavash instead of the usual crackers. It is a very thin Armenian flat bread flavoured with black onion seeds and fennel - delicious. I had the Prosecco (both glasses) and he had a small Malbec (driving). We finished off with coffee. The staff are a credit to the place, they made you feel very welcome and were friendly and efficient. I definitely recommend.

We brought along my 14 month old who loved the place and staff very friendly with him. Was lovely to eat somewhere thats fine dining that accepts families as a lot of places don't allow children. Nice sofa areas to relax with coffee after meal and great views. We then had a voucher for afternoon tea which was also generous size, fresh scones and plenty of tea and coffee. You can have in the lounge or we opted for dining room with highchair. We couldn't eat it all so they offered to box it up to take home. Will definitely return again.

I'm a local of sorts and have just returned from having a most enjoyable, leisurely three-hour lunch at the Ryebeck. I hadn't been there since their major refurbishment a while ago, and I must add that it's been done in the best possible taste. Serpentining by car down the drive to the entrance set the stage, as the sun was shining brightly, the manicured gardens were full of colour and the surrounding trees made me feel as though I had left the frenetic world behind me. It turned out to be true.My lady friend and I were given a most pleasant welcome and we were shown into one of the lounges to peruse the menu. We had the option of sitting outside on the terrace, but we were so comfortable on the sofa that we declined after several moments of indecision. The menu was both varied and imaginative, so it took a bit of time to make up our minds; yes, more indecision but we were never rushed in the slightest. Plus, having prosecco in hand prepared the way ahead nicely.Following our orders, we were shown to our table overlooking the spacious grounds to the rear. In a word the food was superb. I had the confit of duck leg on a bed of mash with some lightly cooked broccoli showing its face brightly. My friend had the tenderloin of pork, but I didn't try to identify all of her various colourful accompaniments. However, it did look really tempting from across the table. For dessert, we both opted for a splendid lemon cheesecake with berries and currants at the base of the thin edge. Top marks for presentation and taste for both courses, along with attentive and friendly service throughout the meal. The Ryebeck certainly knows what hospitality is all about and the staff seem to work exceedingly well as a team. Leaving was 'such sweet sorrow', but three mellow hours of indulgence is truly a gift, so we returned to the outside world that is anything but mellow. We shall happily return before too long for another lovely experience!

We booked this as the advert said they had a brilliant new chef, well we are sorry but he is not up to the standard we are used to in the when we stay in other country house hotels nearby , It was annoying on the second night that we overheard two other guests complaining about this and being told that if they had said on the next morning that if they wanted anything different just ask for whatever, said the manager even cottage pie!. Why did we not get this offer I ask? Does one have to be quietly upset and complain the next day to get this offer.

Stayed at The Ryebeck on a half board basis, taking dinner in The Terrace Restaurant. We were certainly not disappointed!! Apparently, a new chef is in situ, from around June 2016, whose philosophy is to use good local produce, keeping menus simple. Although not a huge choice, there was certainly much to please everyone. Starters consisted of dishes such as Buffalo mozzarella with fig and drizzled with pesto, which was delicious, to Otago and leek soup served hot or cold, with home made artisan breads such as fennel and salt sourdough, with home made butters. My husband chose the Aberdeen Angus steak with an onion glaze with a bearnaise sauce. Our chosen desserts were lemon torte with a raspberry Collis, as light as a feather, and my husband chose a montbasillac desert wine to compliment it. I had the banana cake with a coffee mousse, salted caramel topping and a white milk sorbet. I just wanted to eat it all again!! The service and knowledge of the restaurant staff on the menu and also on advising on wines, was second to none, friendly, professional and , to be honest, first class! Very unobtrusive, but superb! We took coffee and petit fours in the lounge. Breakfast next morning was just as good. A good selection of gluten free, juices, fruit compotes, yoghurts, pastries and cereals. My husband chose the Lakeland breakfast, I had smoked salmon with creamy scrambled eggs. Plenty of brown / white toast with a good selection of conserves. Lovely Farrer coffee. The service was excellent in the restaurant, we were certainly not rushed over either of our meals. Eat at the Terrace Restaurant if you get the chance, you will love it!!!

I wasn't sure about this place as some reviews had mentioned the small portions, nouvelle cuisine style. And we both like decent portions. If you are someone who likes to feel full after a 3 course meal, then this isn't for you. But If you are someone who appreciates quality over quantity, you won't regret it.There is a set menu with about 4 options per course, some require a supplement such as beef and cheese, and as a vegetarian I only had 1 choice. I did ask for something different for a starter, and that was accommodated due to a food intolerance. My meal was absolutely delicious and one of those times when you could savour what you were eating. The thought that had been put into these dishes certainly pays off.My partner, a meat eater, also found his meal to be of very high quality. We certainly didn't need anything else afterwards, but then the delicious bread helped. The staff were also excellent. I would definitely return.

Having sampled some of the top restaurants in the country, purnells, Simpsons, house of tides to mention just a few , I was totally surprised to be delivered such amazing food on a 'groupon' deal purchased by my partner .I was expecting on average a 'good ' hotel standard meal with the idilic setting so when they came out with the canapés of mini Thai fish bites and something resembling nothing of the ordinary 'cheesy beans' more like some savoury meringue with a cheesy bean melt I started to get a little excited . This was no normal hotel food.... From there it kept getting better , the menu appears simple and there is and Asian hint flowing through the menu , so it's pretty much order and await to see what you may get . Im glad to say that what came out next was truly a work of art and those moaning about small portions really havnt done fine dining . my partner is used to good 'ol hearty food' a steak and chips kind of guy and has the stomach for it . Let's just say he was a well satisfied guy after this meal and undone his belt buckles . We felt like we had had a tasting menu by the time all the peretifs, appertifs, home made breads had been delivered in between mains and starter. pudding although should have been a struggle was demolished for the pure simple fact that it was so delicious .Some people may find this place pretentious , I find it simply Michelin food without the price tag . Complete hidden gem for those who have a true pallet for fine food . Compliments to the chef ... And not to mention the pleasant staff. My time is being made very comfortable even at 37 weeks pregnant :) Ps breakfast is top notch too From the very happy satisfied customers in room 19 :)

Lovely dinner, lovely breakfast, lovely stay. We will definitely come back!!!Artur & Agnieszka

Booked Sunday lunch for 13th December 2015. The house and settings are lovely with lake views at this time of year. Plenty of good car parking. We were the only 2 people dining which was a shame but we did have the place to ourselves. We were warmly greeted and looked after by the same person throughout - engaging and friendly with good local knowledge.Food wasn't the typical "traditional" Sunday lunch but was a superbly presented well thought out small menu choice of 3 starters and three mains. I would give all 3 courses 10/10 for appearance and taste. Something that often lets restaurants down in our opinion is that we both like strong decaf coffee and although we always request the stronger the better we are usually disappointed. Not today, we were told who the supplier was, where there beans come from etc..... and it was nice and strong. Price for 2 x 3 course plus canapés was £49 which isn't cheap but was worth every penny. We spent 2 1/2 hours at the Ryebeck and didn't feel any pressure to leave. Will return.

I recentley visited the restaurant to treat some friends to afternoon tea, on arrival the setting is beautiful overlooking lake Windermere and the restaurant in the conservatory is beautiful. We were seated and served promptly, with a selection of sandwiches, scones and various delightful cakes, with a choice of tea or coffee and a lovely glass of pink prosecco....the only thing that spoilt the afternoon teas was that the white bread was stale, quite obvious the sandwiches had been made earlier but not covered up, when we mentioned this to the waiter he blamed it on the bread supplier!!!!!..its not rocket science just keep your bread covered up.....other than that a lovely afternoon out.

When we sat down in the restaurant little did we know what an experience this was going to be. A waitress fetched our first course and explained to us everything that was on the plate and she said please enjoy with great sincerity which was very nice ,and enjoy it we both did.further courses followed, again the waiter/waitress took time to explain what exactly was on the plates. Then came the main course brought by as we thought the head waiter, but it turned out to be the hotel manager, who explained in great detail all about the Buccleuch beef fillet which we had both ordered.well let me just say what a truly majestic piece of fillet, and all the trimmings.never have I ever tasted anything like that before. The final course was served next with as much care as all the others, and of course with an explanation of exactly what was on the plate.when we finished our meal we both sat back in our chairs and said to each other. We don't think we could ever have a better meal than that. It was just a dining experience second to none.well done the ryebeck staff for something we will never ever forget .

We booked a one night stay to include a four course evening meal and breakfast. The restaurant is beautiful and has easy access to a terrace. After canapés we had a choice of starters and bread followed by a stunning main course and choice of sweet. The menu was varied a you could mix and match. It is very nouvelle cuisine so if you are into huge stodgy meals maybe it's not for you but if you enjoy innovative and flavoursome meals in a portion that allows you to finish all courses then it is for you.Breakfast had a great choice and they serve the best coffee that I have had in an English hotel

Michelin standard. Unbelievable food. The menu included an variety of meats, fish and vegetarian dishes. Each meal was complete with its own vegetables so nothing extra was required although extras were available. The food was always served with full description by the water. We did not enjoy the Terrace restaurant, with the main failing seeming to be inexperienced staff working without suitable management guidance. Every evening there were embarrassing incidents of dropped cutlery, dropped plates and food, and a dropped tray of drinks. We were embarrassed to be sitting there, and this was made worse by loud or inappropriate conversation from certain members of the staff. There were two waitresses who seemed to have done the job before, but the rest looked like they had just arrived off the street, and there was no-one overseeing what they were doing. We had a high expectation of the evening meals in the Terrace based on other reports, but I guess these must be a bit subjective. There is no doubt that the chef worked hard in the preparation and presentation of the food, which came to the table like works of art. However, there were only small amounts on the plate, and the meals all tended to be in the same style, giving a lack of balance to the menu, which was also quite game oriented e.g. rabbit, venison, wood pigeon, and was the same every evening while we were there. We can only speak for ourselves, but the result was that we had to eat a lot of bread and butter with the meal to fill up, and after 2 or 3 days were longing for something more straightforward e.g. a chicken or salmon dish. The restaurant also has a time-slot booking system for dinner, and so you can’t always eat at the time you choose. I understand that this is to spread the load on the kitchen, but maybe with a bit more organisation, the kitchen could meet the customer’s requirements instead?

We are great fans of Hipping Hall and thought we would try another of their hotels, The Ryebeck, for dinner a couple of weeks ago. It was a gloriously sunny evening and views over the lake were delightful. As non-residents we had to book a table for 6.30, rather too early for us but thought we would go anyway. The building from the outside is quite lovely and a nice example of local Arts & Crafts architecture. But that didn't continue inside, which we thought was rather lacking in comfort and elegance. We felt rather rushed and lounge service over zealous and the cocktails underwhelming. We chose the tasting menu and have to say that the main course lamb was by far and away the best dish. Staff were friendly but I think would do an even better job if they had a more in-depth knowledge of the dishes they were serving. I think we'll stick with Hipping Hall.

Beautifully located, menu sounded good with vegetarians being catered for not just as an aside. Food had some tasty elements but incredibly small portions, no we're not greedy but we felt we had just had bits to eat not a proper meal. Breakfast was delicious though and filling so the kitchen can get it right. Second evening meal during our stay was the worst ever, cod dish broth stunk and ravioli dish was so full of salt it was inedible and suffered ill health for a few days after because of this. Please review the background music too as we felt as though we were at a funeral.

My husband and I had Sunday lunch her to celebrate 45 years since we met. The building has been superbly restyled and has magnificent views over the lake. Our starter of foie gras with smoked duck was one of the best I have had in a long time - it looked beautiful and, more importantly, tasted delicious. The roast beef was excellent and again well presented, a traditional Sunday roast with a good array of vegetables and large, fluffy Yorkshire pudding. But the dessert of blood orange cheesecake was a letdown! Nothing like a cheesecake, just a bland creamy mousse with an orange gel topping that was tasteless and chewy, the only flavour of blood orange was in 2 blobs of orange sauce. What a disappointing end to an otherwise lovely meal. The service was very patchy and rather inept at times,we had to ask for mustard and horseradish,we noticed other diners being dissatisfied but we would return and hope for a better dessert!

Wow this restaurant has a wonderful location, right over the top of Windermere, we were sat in the conservatory at a window table with the lake below us in the distance. The Ryebeck is a restaurant as most are around Windermere and Bowness set in a large old house, it has managed to keep its charm and that feeling of a home still loved, but in the conservatory a slightly more contemporary edge prevails, but it doesn't take anything away from the charm. We started our meal with a few hors De oueves (that's a spelling stab), which I loved but my fussy other half neglected to try, more for me I may add as they were delicious, washed down with a glorious cocktail, made with Marmalade Chase Vodka and ginger beer, the Vodka I'm told is sold in Booths, which I've not managed to track down yet. We were escorted to our table and As it was mothering Sunday a nice touch at the table was the gift of chocolates for the mummy, however I had to share later with my daughterAnyway I won't go on about each course only to say each was utterly delicious, beautifully presented and the roast beef was out of this world!!! the service was attentive but not intrusive and as I'm a stickler for excellent customer service a welcome relief. We will be back especially if I can't find that vodka!

The food was very good although the service was poor. On arrival, for afternoon tea, we had to wait for some time before anyone attended to or even welcomed us. Once all six of us were seated I had to go in search of staff after 10 minutes to ask to be served, no one was around so I asked the receptionist/manageress who seemed quite perturbed that she had to come and take our order, her attitude could have been perceived as condescending. Despite the food being of a very high quality we were left alone in a cold conservatory that was soulless with no atmosphere, it's coldness only amplified by the fact we were we the only guests. I asked if we could sit in the lounge, however I was told this was for residents only. I wouldn't recommend this for afternoon tea unless you are a resident and have the choice to sit in a room with some charm.

We went here for an old friend's 50th birthday lunch. Three and a half hours later, we left happy. No, not slow service, but a lot of chatting. I think they do pretty well in trying to offer a balance between wanting to 'put things on' and making a nice meal. So, starters were served with a bit of zest (Jackson Pollock would have admired the backdrop to the goat's cheese salad and i thought it looked pretty goo as well) while mains and puds were more straight down the line. It would have been nice to have been offered sauces with roast beef, but I did not have any great beef. So, this is a good place for having a middle sized group (27) over for a special occasion.

Just a Hollow Sorry .One would expect for what they charge you would at least get some food worth eating, but sadly not , we live in windermere and used this restaurant many many times with the previous owner and had nothing but praise for the culinery delights sampled there ,it was a superb hotel them days. Would we go again then the answer is NO , their rebranding to the Rybeck from the Fayrer Garden will not cover the poor food served .there is better out there in the lakes trust me.than this.

Overall a good evening, fantastic food, but the service was so slow it took just over 2 hours to finish a 3-course meal when the restaurant was almost empty. The waiters and waitresses were lovely, with the exception of the manager who greeted us and took our payment at the end of the meal, she was very badly mannered and just generally unpleasant which ended our evening on a bad note.

A trip to Hipping Hall’s sister establishment, The Ryebeck was eagerly anticipated and it did not disappoint. After only one visit, my wife and I already have The Terrace earmarked as a place for special occasions in the future. The night began in the bar with lamb kofta and pork quaver hors d’oeuvres which were simply wonderful. The wine menu was extremely modest too with many bottles coming in around the £20 mark.Progressing into the restaurant, the first thing that hits you is the stunning landscape beyond and has to be one of the best views in The Lake District, also taking in some of the hotels 5 acres of gardens. (don’t miss the step when admiring the view!)The meal began with a pigeon starter accompanied with juniper and blackcurrant, puffed rice and dried beetroot. I have to say this was one of the best dishes I have ever tasted.Fillet steak with artichoke for main and finished with a damson parfait which was delicious..The night was concluded with coffee and the most sublime salted caramel petit fours. The restaurant service protocol was classy and never too intrusive; interesting and brief conversations with the waiting staff contributed to a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The ambience was divine, well lit with Clair De Lune by Debussy in background. I might have even caught a bit of Michael Nyman! For those who complain about smaller portions, their claim is confounded here: The portion sizes are modest and fitting with the elegance of a more refined dining experience. If you want to stuff your oversized faces with sub quality food go somewhere else: The Terrace is up there with the best.

We stayed at the Ryebeck for our Anniversary and I have no complaints about the Hotel side of things. However, I have never had such small portions for a main meal. I asked for the Lobster Ravioli as a main (it was on the menu as a starter) and I was given one piece of Ravioli surrounded by sauce. My husband had the Pork Cheek and again his main response was "Where's the rest of it?". There are no vegetables to be seen, and I can honestly say that it took me about 2 minutes to eat my Main Course - and that was pacing myself. I understand that the Ryebeck is all about fine dining, but why does this have to mean such small portions? We were both hungry after our meal, and although the setting and the ambience of the Ryebeck is excellent, we both felt let down by the quantity of our meals.

I booked into the Terrace Restaurant at the Ryebeck because they would accept my Taste card on a Friday night. The offer was 2 for 1 on their set menu. We were not disappointed. We arrived earlier than the booked time so that we could have a pre dinner drink and take advantage of the fine views across Windermere. During our drink we were offered canapés that were delicious. We selected from the set menu where there was a reasonable choice. For our main course we both chose the beef which was tender and cooked to perfection. We chose a red wine the Sirrah at £19 a bottle which complimented our choice of courses well. Food is on the nouveau cuisine style well presented and of a reasonable quantity. Staff were very attentive with plenty on duty. The restaurant has been recently refurbished to a modern simple style. The fact that we were non resident did not cause any major issues. This restaurant needs to be booked but it is well worth the effort. Overall one of the better meals we have had lately

Well I won't be going back ,the food was awful ...the tomato ,basil and pesto soup had a horrible sharp but sugary sweet taste...the sandwich that came with it had the cheapest bright yellow " butter "on. ,a maximum of one slice of ham and the cheapest mustard . My 4 year old grandson could have made a better sandwich ! My husband had pie which had hardly any meat in it and the gravy was unusual tasting ( to say the least ) and sweet . I've had far superior microwave meals ! The toilets which were always an asset to the pub had gone downhill too.

We have been here many times over the years and love it. Dropped in for a drink last week. Wooooah! £9.80 for a Prosecco and a pint of cider shandy is the same price as a pint of cider - about £7. So by that maybe a pint of lemonade is also £7? I’m sure many people stop for a drink while walking in the beautiful lakes but next time we might find another stopping point. Although living in the North East maybe we just have cheaper pubs up here??!!

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.
