From the moment we walked in we felt the warmth and inviting nature of this pub. The service (Dee) was excellent and informative too. Being told this is a Community Pub taken over a few years ago by the Community, put everything into perspective. People cared about everything and not least those they were serving or their fellow diners. Home made steak and mushroom pie, mash and vegetables from the allotment were superb. All in all a great experience and a place to which we will return when we are travelling along the M4 nearby.

I booked this accommodation for 2 night stay over the phone. I had no confirmation so called the night before arrival to check, no answer. The next morning I received a call saying yes I was booked in but did I know the bar and restaurant would be closed ...no I didn't which wasn't ideal. Arrived after 2pm in rain no one there, no doors open, called at least 5 times and left messages no reply again. Had to find alternative accommodation last minute. I received a call back after 7pm saying sorry only just picked up your messages...NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!

We were greeted by friendly staff at the bar and chose where we wanted to sit in the cosy restaurant. Our dog willow was made very welcome with treats and a bowl of water. The food was delicious with generous portions and our roast dinners were accompanied by a wide selection of tasty seasonal vegetables with plenty of homemade gravy. Highly recommended especially for Sunday roast and locals night on Wednesday evening. This lovely community run pub also has a very popular quiz night on the first Tuesday of every month. There are some lovely circular walks that can be enjoyed from the Tally Ho before or after your meal! They even have three en-suite bedrooms upstairs if you need somewhere to stop over on your journey and are situated within a mile of the M4 junction 14 and the A4 close to Hungerford. Booking ahead is advised.

We went for Sunday lunch. My 3 year old doesn't eat much so I asked just for a sausage and Yorkshire pudding for him. When the food came 1 of the starters was wrong so they replaced it for the correct 1. Food was average I would say. When we came to pay we were charged for the more expensive starter and £10 for the 1 sausage and Yorkshire pudding!! I complained and it was reduced to £5. The whole meal was so expensive and not worth the money. I also found the staff quite rude. I wouldn't return

We have passed this pub without visiting several times. Today we called in and found it was just what we were looking for. My husband is very picky about his beer and declared that it was the best he had had in ages. The Stowford Press cider was cool, crisp and delicious. My husband and grand-daughter had pies. When I asked the waitress if they were proper pies rather than a filling with a pre-cooked pastry top she looked shocked and said they would never call them' pies ' if they were not actually pies. The eaters of said pies declared them delicious. The waitress was funny, sparky and efficient. We will definitely call again.

Stayed for one night with the family on our way back to Wales from a week in London. Chose the pub due to it being just off the M4 and being in the middle of our route broke up the driving nicely. Stayed in the family room, ate in the bar. Can honestly say it was a pleasure to stay in such a nice country pub. The room and the pub were smart, clean functional and and well presented. Had a good nights sleep and for one night above a pub was perfectly fine. The bar had a nice choice of drinks and the food was perfectly fine and I personally didn’t have an issue with any of it or the price. I had the steak and ale pie which was fine for me. The food is what you would expect from a standard country pub, not Michelin star but perfectly fine. The manager Chris was very pleasant and the few locals who popped in while I was at the bar before it got busy were very pleasant and welcoming. Couldn’t fault the place for price, the outside road was busy and noisy but it didn’t affect my sleep. Would definitely recommend the place and would happily stay again.

Nice little community run pub with a good selection of beers and friendly service. Unfortunately the food leaves a lot to be desired and is average at best. Having eaten here several times recently, it is very underwhelming, fairly greasy and most probably mass produced. If they could get the food right, they’d be onto a winner.

after reading the recent reviews my wife and I decided to visit the Tally Ho tonight, what a mistake. I can only assume that the chef was off as the only food available was from the freezer, my wife had a vegetarian pie with chips and peas I opted for the Steak and ale pie with chips and peas, it appears that they forgot to add the steak. I left my pie uneaten apart from the pastry top as the filling was not nice, the guy who had served us (Chris) came and collected the plates without a word and then a waitress came with dessert menus which we declined. I then asked for the bill and when my wife went to pay she was asked if she wanted to add a tip to the card payment to which she said no, she was then asked if everything was ok to which she said the food was under whelming and I said that all of the food was out of the freezer and that there were no meat pieces in the pie to which he asked why I hadn't said anything when he had asked when he collected the plates, at this point I got a little annoyed and told him he had not asked at any point during the evening if everything was ok probably because he had been stood behind the bar listening to what my wife and I had been saying about the food, I was then told he had been in the trade for 15 years and never not asked how the food was at which point I told him I have been eating for over 60 years and never not told a waiter what I thought about the food when asked. on leaving the carpark Chris was stood at the door waving with a big stupid grin on his face. Will we be back, I don't think so.

Called in to have lunch. It was fairly busy but not crammed. Sadly came away feeling very disappointed. The waiting staff seemed disorganised and not entirely sure what they were doing. The food took ages to come 40 mins and quite frankly we were ready to walk out. A smoked chicken salad, consisted of some bagged salad leaves plonked on the plate, with one tomato chopped up, two slithers of cucumber and some spring onion, topped with couscous, three bits of roasted butternut squash and some ready prepared chicken out of a packet. Not terribly inspiring and grossly overpriced at £13 for something that was all ready prepared! Frozen chips accompanied our other meal which was missing its salad garnish! Not that it was missing anything much anyway, if my salad was anything to go by. It was edible but so disappointing. Shame, won’t be returning, like to support local pubs but this was poor.

Stopped off en route along the M4. Lovely traditional community pub with a great country feel. Food was really tasty and fresh which justified the slight wait but service was great and the place was full

Whenever we are in the area we always meet up with friends here for a meal. The service is always exceptional. Great warm welcome by the locals. The food is great. Never had a bad meal in all the times we've visited. I just wish I could pick the place up and there people in it and bring it to Devon.

We went here for lunch with family the other day. We were lucky to get in as the restaurant had reserved notices on all the tables when we arrived. And that was on a Thursday! The tables were quickly occupied. The service was very friendly and everything was very clean. The food was very good and, unfortunately for our waistlines, the choice of homemade desserts was excellent. Such a shame it is too far away to eat here regularly

Just stopped off from the M4 on the offchance they would have a table and luckily there was just one available. Very friendly welcome for us and our black lab. Food was delicious and lots of it, the beef was cooked to perfection (not overdone but nice and pink) gorgeous veg and yorkies. Overall lovely pub with great ambience, friendly and welcoming service and gorgeous food. We have just left but will definitely be returning!

We were simply driving though on our way to Wiltshire when my husband decided to turn off and into the Tally Ho car park. We hadn't booked and we fancied something to eat. My first impression was how lovely the people behind the bar were. They were all smiles and happy, and we were noticed straight away. No standing around waiting to be served, which always makes me think this is a well run pub. It's quite small and quite busy too. All the tables were booked but they offered us a table letting us know they had another booking in an hours time. It was made clear we were welcome to stay and finished our drinks at the bar or in the garden. I had a roast beef. The beef was cooked perfectly. The Yorkshire pudding was home cooked perfection. My mum has scampi. She said it was delicious. None of us could fault the food, and we also had lots of lovely fresh veg. After our meal we went out into the garden and found a lovely little sun trap. I could have stayed there for hours. The team in the pub could not have been more helpful and appreciative when I thanked them for a lovely meal. This little treasure is well worth a visit. We went there on a Sunday afternoon.

Booked a table for 15 people to celebrate a family birthday. Half the party from the Swindon area, the other half from Reading. The party included 6 children and 2 special diet requests with half the party being held up and arriving 30 minutes later than we'd booked for.

I arrived to a lovely welcoming smile from Hannah and the tone of my visit was set.All the staff were extremely welcoming and my room was spotlessly clean, spacious and very comfortable.I had the fish and chips for dinner which was excellent and afterwards joined in the pub quiz and was made to feel very much at home by the locals. The beauty of the Tally Ho is that it provides a personal and friendly service so sadly lacking these days.I thoroughly recommend it.

I don’t very often write reviews but it was necessary to comment on a particular review for yesterday. I was passing through and stopped for a superb Sunday lunch with friends and feel I have to comment on the very unfair review that was put through by a table of 6 that was adjacent to my table of 3. I feel have to say that we received the most courteous of service and the food was great. So I was appalled to read the comments of one of the parents of A very small child that continually cried and screeched. After a period of approximately an hour, I heard the waitress very courteously if it was possible for the child to be kept quiet, as it was raising heads not only at my table but other tables as well. I can not see why anyone should be offended by the most courteous way the parent was asked to quieten her child.

Sunday lunchtimes in the Tally Ho have always been family orientated which means, of course, it is very busy. I use the pub on a regular basis and meet people who just come for a quiet pint and many families for Sunday lunch. Unfortunately, this Sunday was spoilt by an unruly and very, very noisy (screaming) child. The parents seemed to have little to do with the child. Probably the child would have been happier had the parents paid it some attention. When the proprietor went over, after several complaints from other customers, to ask the parents to quieten the child, the mother was abusive. As I have said before, the pub IS child friendly, high chairs, a toy corner are both available. Myself, I am a professional children's entertainer - the problem could have been easily resolved had the mother been more attentive to the child. Perhaps instead of using social media, the parent ought first to talk calmly and quietly to her child, staff and other customers.

Very good service throughout. Whilst we waited a while the knowledge of an order needing to be gluten free was the best I've experienced in ages. The chips were cooked in a fryer used for onion ring
