We have visited this pub a few times now and have always had a slightly odd experience. Either you can’t eat, or the white wine is cold but they tell you it’s not, you walk all the way (after checking opening hours online) and find it’s shut even though the board outside says it’s open or you phone to check it’s open and are told yes, get there and there is a wedding on and you can only use one room in the pub and the garden is closed (not great when you have kids with you) and then if you mention it to the bar staff that if they had said the garden was closed you wouldn’t have come down they tell you they did tell you. Safe to say I think we are unlikely to visit again I am afraid. Other people obviously get on fine there as the reviews are good so maybe it’s just us 🙈

We ate here on a Saturday night. Service and food was very good (although two jalapeño cheese poppers as a starter was a bit stingy) Beers were ok … would have liked a few more on draft but a nice evening. Lovely garden and some nice events planned too. Opening hours and capacity were very odd … didn’t open until 3pm on a Saturday and although restaurant was only half full at 7:30pm sign said it was full … I think you could be doing a lot more business !

First time visiting this local pub - arrived early, made to feel very welcome. Good selection of beers, and a good selection of meal choices Started by having starters which were good size then had both veggie burger and then Swan Burger - can highly recommend it but beware that it is quite large Also worthy of mention was the service - the waitress was polite, informative and friendly…..‘just made us feel very welcome very natural - not something which is rarely found now

My wife and I ate here last weekend and almost a week later we are still talking about how good the food and evening was. Lamb shank to absolutely die for and gorgeous pies, great size portions and top value. Add in extremely well kept beer, a quirky Gin selection, decent wine, excellent staff and friendly locals who made us very very welcome as visitors I cannot recommend enough. Will definitely return next time we are in the area.

Really nice food, particularly the starters, I had whitebait, which was done to perfection, and my husband had chicken parfait which was simply delicious. For main course, he had a steak and I had ribs - there was the option to have the full amount of ribs, or half - I had half - and this was quite a large portion in itself. That would be my one criticism of the meal - that the portion sizes were extremely large - a mountain of lovely, crispy chips of which I was forced to leave half. I suppose for most people this wouldn't be a big problem, but I prefer to be able to eat most of the meal that I am served.

I am disgusted by the way this pub has treated us and let us down at last minute for our wedding day. We booked with them about 2 years ago asking if they would provide the bar for our wedding which they agreed to. We then met with the manager last year and discussed and finalised our booking for our WEDDING. We had mentioned it was going to be the Jubilee weekend so we wernt let down at last minute and gave plenty of notice. They said they would fulfil our request and they could offer us the bar for our special day. Now with 6 weeks to go we have been let down at last minute after we messaged to ask about final payment. The swan didn't have the decency to contact us to let us know that they no longer were able to manage the bar at our wedding. We are absolutely gutted that this pub has let us down last minute with us now struggling to find an alternative option due to it being the Jubilee!!! I really hope this never happens to another couple as you should never have this stress leading up to your special day!!!!!! GO ELSEWHERE

At this point I must admit it is my local. We eat there as often as we possibly can. We celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and even went there the night our dog died and we didn’t want to cook. The food is consistent, cooked upon order and always good. The menu is changed often and regularly, built around seasonal food and the extremely delicious staple of the House Burger. Their pizzas are brilliant. My husband is fussy about his beer and the way it’s kept. He tells me they keep their beers really well. They are a Free House. They have a menu of Gins to die for - I think (although I’ve not counted them) it’s in the region of 40 different gins - do ask before going if this is important to you. During lockdown they are providing a takeaway service, having had one of those meals I am delighted to say the standard is just as good as if you were eating in their restaurant. No corners cut. You pay for what you get and that, in my opinion, means it’s not expensive at all. Trip advisor asks for a recommended dish - I’m afraid I can’t recommend one - they are all excellent. I don’t yet have a favourite. I’m keep going back in the hopes I shall find one!!!!!! Overall this place is definitely worth a trip to. Very friendly and welcoming. (When it’s open again after the lockdown) Children and dogs welcome too.

Big group booking (14 of us), we were given our own section of the pub as they had another large party booking on the same night. Staff were very attentive, once everyone had arrived they gave us a few minutes before the waitress came over and took our drinks order. As we were a large party the pub had requested that we preordered our food choices, they came at very good intervals, at no point did the meal feel rushed, all in all we were at the pub for about 3 hours.

Called in for dinner this Sunday evening. Reasonably priced and good ambience. But let down by the food. They’d ran out of both the roast chicken and lamb. They advertise gluten free but their interpretation of gluten free was to leave things off rather than replace with the gluten free version. So no stuffing or Yorkshire like we get at other restaurants and the only GF desert option was ice cream. Roast tasted greasy and vegetables undercooked. Had far better elsewhere so won’t be back.

Was at a local campsite with a group of bikers last weekend and went into this pub. I saw what a few people were eating and it looked very very nice, so i ordered a Power Breakfast (at 2pm) Soudough toast, crushed avocado, championship winning poached eggs!!!!!!, flavour PACKED mushrooms and tomatoes, spinach, whipped ricotta (I think) and toasted flaked almonds - i can safely say that i havent had food of this quality in much more expensive restaurants and certainly wasnt expecting it from a lovely local village pub!! What this chef does with ingredients / seasoning is magic. I returned the next day (Sunday) with 3 friends for a roast dinner - again it was completly perfect. I had the 'small' size but it isn't small whatsoever - it was actually so nice that we all ordered a slice of bread each to mop up the gravy (we are northeners after all) and that is something i have never done at an eatery - i just didnt care! Outside area is large and very well kept and the owner is absolutely lovely. I advise booking for a Sunday the day before as the kitchen is small and they like to have things prepped and prepared. Between the nice experience of the campsite (Brighthouse Farm) and the experience of this perfect pub and the surrounding beauty of the area - I have actually left my caravan in storage down there on the site so i can return monthly without towing. Now that i wasnt expecting to do. Keep up the good work!!

We popped in last Sunday, the 14th of April, hoping for lunch on the off chance, having heard great things. We were greeted warmly and welcomed. Lunch no problem. Though offered a table in the charming dining room, we decided on a table in the bar. The service was impeccable, the surroundings harmonious. Great choice of beers. Menu excellent. We both wanted roast beef, and there was the option of a slightly smaller serving, which my wife took, possibly motivated by the deal including pudding! Our lunches arrived, and we didn't say much for a while, apart from little grunts of joy. Truly delicious. I rarely write reviews, but it would be a great shame not to share this delightful establishment with the world. We'll definitely be back, as the menu varies from day to day, the ambience was perfect and all in all it was a totally joyful experience. The owners clearly have style and good taste, but it isn't intrusive. This is what pubs ought to be. Oh and great value. If I had been charged twice as much I wouldn't have minded.

Roast Lamb tough, yorkshire pudding stone cold and doughy (I presume had been cooked much earlier as were the potatoes and vegetables-some burnt). After having 11 years of bad Sunday roasts from every single pub in London and all over the country (conveyor belt batch cooking), finally I’ve stumbled across somewhere that makes homemade Sunday lunch, with an attention to detail that your mum would be proud of! The plate was bursting with all the trimmings, and the reviews are right, the normal portion size is more than adequate for everyone! The dessert selection and cheese board were also above par, varied selection which tasted A W E S O M E (really it was). Definitely would recommend finishing up a long country walk here, but do boon as there weren’t that many tables. Service wasn’t that attentive but can be forgiven for the quality of the food.

Shortly afterwards I tried again, it was a school half-term and again closed. I have given up going as I can't walk as well these days. It used to be a typical village pub but now seems to be an over priced restaurant with a bar, in a word, pretentious. If I want to see art, I can go to an art gallery, I don't want to see it on a plate of food. One good thing is, they won't sell Greene King beer. On our first visit 18 months ago, we had a very good evening with interesting 'chefs Specials. Our second visit recently was a little disappointing. We had looked at the supper menu on the website before leaving and noticed 5 starters and a note of some 'chefs specials'. We were met by a nice lady, and ordered drinks and starters - from a selection of 3. We waited quite a long time for these to arrive - its a pity so few restaurants in the UK put bread and olive oil on the table. It makes a wait more bearable and reassures the customer. There were no 'chefs specials, and the menu of main dishes looked rather dull - steaks, burgers, fish&chips;, ham & eggs etc. Our choices were OK but nothing came with fresh vegetables. The pub itself is attractive, well run with good service, It was good to see 4 good beers on hand-pump and a short and reasonably priced wine list. We will re-visit but ring ahead to check on the availability of good main dishes, either at lunch or in the evening.

One of the friendliest pubs you'll find. The chef/landlord serves up beautifully cooked meals at very good prices. His food is amazing. Good selection of beers and vast selection of gins. You always get a great welcome from the owners and staff..

ordered the fried chicken, but when it arrived after a long wait, it wasn.t cooked, and the rest of the meal was cold, I did not complain as we had been taken there by friends who had delicious meals there.

My husband and I went here last night as we have been meaning to go for sometime as the owners did our outside bar for our wedding (and did a fantastic job). We had an absolutely wonderful meal with outstanding service to match. My husband and I had the beef Wellington which I have to say was absolutely on point, the beef was so tender and the pasty was perfect literally mouth watering. The chocolate fondant to share for pudding finished off this meal perfectly.

Came across by accident on drive out, glad we did, what a little gem. Sunday lunch was no trouble even without a booking. Fresh food cooked perfectly. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere. My only criticism was it was cold in the bar, could have had the heating on! Will be returning soon!

2 for Sunday lunch. Booked at last minute and would advise booking - once word gets out, this will be a must. The Swan's under a new flag (don't know how recently) but friendly, attentive and professional team. Food: shared starter was brilliant. 1x belly pork, 1x hoi sin duck in small soft(ish) rolls. Faultless. Mixed salad leaves with intelsely-flavoured & piquant home made chutney. Main - bbq'd poussin with roasted hazelnuts, beetroot puree and nutty rice. Great - use hands, it's easier. Partner - roast beef (choice of large adult portion, small adult portion and child's) had small adult portion and wasn't that small. Looked good esp for price. Didn't try as dog beat me to it. Pud - shred. Lemon tart with brulee top - picture on a plate and concentrated flavour, Ditto accompanying mouth-puckering lemon sorbet - but - home-made toasted almond vanilla ice cream. The ice cream would have been lovely but over-toasting of almonds had left an odd almost acrid taste - otherwise would have been 5 stars.

My other half and I had booked in the restaurant for sunday lunch, but as it was sunny we sat outside with the dog. The garden is fab - huge! We shared a starter - 2 steamed white rolls - one filled with pork and the other with duck. Delicious - I couldn't decide which one I preferred. Roast beef with good vegies, and poussin (I think!). Pudding was lemon tart with really good lemon sorbet - just the right amount of tartness - pulled your cheeks in! I really recommend it. The staff were nice and friendly and I would visit again. And a reasonable price. :)

Great village pub doing what village pub should! Lovely welcoming without a booking (I'd book next time though as it got very busy later in the evening). Great food and all round worth the visit, recommend the steaks. We'll be back.

We were looking for somewhere different to try for a meal and this is where we ended up and it was truly a lucky choice. From the time we walked in to when we left it was a totally pleasant experience , it is a cosy and friendly pub and the menu offered a good choice of interesting dishes. All four of us chose different things and everything was carefully and skilfully cooked , a tasty treat for us all . Anyone wanting food on the table within 10 minutes of ordering will not be happy , but if you if you want quality food and are out for a great dining experience then you wont be disappointed .

An evening meal where the staff were attentive and looked after us well. Better than your average pub grub with a menu which caters for a wide range of diners with a frequently changing specials board, everything was cooked to order and was served attractively. Peanut butter parfait, salted caramel, butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream was a real hit with one member of our party. Visit their website for a listing of meals available. The beer was good with a fine selection of ales. We will certainly be going back in the near future.

We regularly visit this outstanding country pub. The food is always excellent. Accomplished by only serving first quality produce individually prepared by owner/chef Laurence. He has now introduced something rarely found, in place of an extra new oven he has installed a big green egg (look it up on the web) this gives many of his dishes that extra special something to make a visit here not only a must but a unique experience.

We decided to eat here for evening meal and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of food. We had the chicken burger, fish and chips and fillet steak. All of us enjoyed our meals and there were plenty of chips, the only thing to note was that the salad with the burger was quite small. We were quite full but decided to share some desserts, we tried the chocolate pot and chocolate fondant and some vanilla ice cream. The desserts were also delicious, the ice cream is home made and had a great taste. We couldn't really fault this place, the lady behind the bar was very friendly and helpful as was the owner who we chatted to as we paid our bill. It is best to book a table if you are thinking of going as the restaurant is quite small, all the food is freshly made to order, not to be missed!

We have eaten here several times over the past year and have never been disappointed, only impressed. The food is outstanding and Laurence's attention to detail is what makes his food so special. All the dishes we have tried have been top quality and combined with the friendly service and easy atmosphere, The Swan offers a great dining experience with good value for money. They welcome families, couples and bigger parties equally. Highly recommended.

A country pub that has food as well. A welcoming log fire on a miserable grey day set the tone, scrubbed tables with slate place mats and a warm, friendly atmosphere. The menu was a bit limited but our party chose the Sunday roast, half a roast chicken or beef. The portions were generous to say the least, the plate was piled high with cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower cheese, roast parsnips, carrots, new and roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and gravy, far too much to clear the plate. The puddings were delicious, very rich and unusual, chocolate, raspberries and ice cream featured a lot along with a sticky date pudding and a cheese board. All followed by tea or coffee.

We visited last Saturday lunchtime. It was fairly quiet then but my friend had been the previous evening and commented how good it was - and busy, so we thought we'd try it together. I have to say, the menu was a bit limited, but that didn't bother me as it usually means the food is fresh. My friend opted for a traditional 'ploughman's' (ham and cheese in this case), which looked amazing. There were three or four local cheeses on his plate as well as two large slices of freshly cut ham, relishes, and a pile of fresh crusty bread. At around £9, this would have easily sufficed as a sharing plate. I ordered an onion bhajee burger, which was beautifully presented with delicious chips. I would have preferred a lighter option - such as a cold fish platter (not on menu), but was curious, never having had a 'bhajee burger' before. There were other choices which on reflection I would be happy with given the quality of the food. The owners were friendly and welcoming. They have a lovely garden and I look forward to an evening visit.

Very friendly welcome on arrival and good choice of drinks including prosecco.choice of food is listed in the bar area on a blackboard you can either order at the bar or the order can be taken at the table.I would like to see more than one veggie option but the " option" has always been flavoursome with a plentiful portion and presented very well on the plate.as everything is cooked to order there is a wait but it is worth the wait to be presented with hot quality food.you have to book for a table and weekends are normally booked up in advance.

Visited on a number of occasions. Food is nicely presented and cooked, with an individual touch, and overall good value for money. Landlady very keen to please, and will adjust menu to suit individual requirements. Pub is nicely refurbished, clean and bright inside with a fair range of ales, lagers and ciders. Nice garden and dining room, ideal for family or friends. Shame you've recently lost the Adnams mosaic from the bar choice.

Used to be a sadly neglected run down pub local. Transformed 18 months ago with a dynamic young couple who have created a wonderful new facility for this rural village. Lawrence an English trained chef with his extrovert Aussie wife are one hell of a team. You may have to wait a little longer than some places but believe me it is worth every moment. Nice to have alternative beers to the ubiquitous local multinational offerings with good selection of ciders, wines & spirits. Five of us booked lunch, lovely welcome from Kate who made our visit a real treat. My opener of mussels was truly exceptional but be warned, as well as being superb it was one big generous helping. Everything here is individually cooked to order & it shows. Locally scourced ingredients wherever possible of the highest quality. My pork was excellent, the corn, truffle fed chickens enjoyed immencely by three of the party, the final dish was sea bass, beautifully cooked & all well presented with lovely vegetables. Two of us were replete but two scrummy puds were soon devoured, the Suffolk cheese board did the County & The Swan proud, no sad offerings here, freshly cut with a variety of fresh biscuits, there was a very generous plate full. Everything in this establishment is about quality, the only concern that I have is that if too many people find it we won,t be able to get a table. This couple really deserve to succeed in a competative sector, they will certainly be seeing much more of us. Thanks Lawrence & your lovely front of house today Kate for making our visit memorable.

This place was recommended by the owner of an airbnb in Hartest and was such a treat. We had just holidayed in Southwold eating out most days and had lovely food most of the time. It is a lovely simply decorated, understated pub and has a great atmosphere. The menu is short but there was nothing on it that I would not happily have eaten. I had belly pork with scallop as a starter and the quality of the meat was excellent. Could not fault it. They are especially good at sauces and this one was sweetened with apple. My partner had mussels in cider sauce. I had steak for main which I rarely have and it was perfect. My partner had the pork combination which was so well cooked-belly, fillet, faggot, black pudding and a sausage. Again perfect sauce. The chef really can cook. We had no room for pudding but they looked of the same quality. Adnams supply the wines. The notes against each wine were very well written and the ones we tried were so well priced and lived up to their descriptions. Had a great Romanian sauv blanc. I wish this pub was near us. Great service too.

As a pool player for this pub I'm in here most days. What makes this pub the place to be is the character, the charm, the staff who make it such a cosy place to frequent. The food is amazing, my favourite by far is the roast dinners. Massive fan of then. The staff too are friendly and accommodating, even playing pool they come over and talk to you ask you about your day ect, their general attitude is very positive and it makes the experience that much better. I can't imagine going anywhere else. Keep up the great work!

Michael and Sheila have gone although the new "lady of the house" is actually Sheilas daughter. I appreciated we are in troubled times with a lot of pubs cutting back but a very limited menu will not impress previous customers, although the fish couldn't have been fresher. A big no is the owners children having the run of the pub, just imagine "grumpy" Michaels comments!!!.
