The Swan Inn in Cherwell

From the outside, the Swan Inn might appear to be a simple village pub, but step inside, and you’re in for an extraordinary experience. Upon entering, we were immediately impressed by the open view of the professional kitchen, where chefs could be seen meticulously preparing dishes. It was clear right away that this was not just another gastro pub. We were warmly welcomed and seated, and our waiter, Joe, guided us through the menu with care and clarity. His thoughtful explanations made choosing our dishes an enjoyable experience. Before our starters arrived, we were treated to freshly baked bread served with two types of butter: honey and malt. The combination was sensational and set the tone for what was to come. For starters, I had the venison, which was incredibly tender – it melted with a single fork stroke. The flavours were perfectly balanced, allowing the venison to truly shine. A delightful surprise was the inclusion of two mini onion rings, lightly battered and utterly delicious. My wife opted for the burrata, complemented by a delicate candied orange peel. It was a brilliant pairing, and we’ve already decided to replicate it at home. For mains, I had the rib-eye steak, cooked to a flawless medium-rare. The quality was outstanding – a well-hung steak that true steak lovers will immediately recognize as exceptional. My wife chose the Thai curry, which was a masterclass in balance. Unlike many other curries, this one wasn’t overwhelmed by cream; instead, the fresh, fragrant ingredients took centre stage. If The Swan Inn were located in a more densely populated area, I have no doubt it would be booked out weeks in advance. It’s a hidden gem that delivers in every way. We loved every second and will absolutely be returning. Five stars, without a doubt.

Entirely exceptional food on the lunch menu. Original, amazing tastes, great value and altogether gifted yes, surely to Michelin star standard. Add to that the friendly people (willing to adapt to the tastes of a child) and we had a memorable experience.

Amazing food and wonderful service only 15 minutes from Oxford. The staff were great at catering to my dietary requirements (I’m pregnant) and there was a delicious selection of mocktails. Can’t wait to return! Highly recommended

I visited the White Swan for a Saturday lunch with friends. We had the tasting menu which was delicious. The food was beautifully presented and the tastes were amazing. Cocktails and wines were also of a very high standard. The staff were all very friendly and efficient. Highly recommend. We will be back.

We enjoyed the food very much each course was delicious and well presented, and the price fine for what is essentially a pub all be it nicely done out. The staff let it down for us . Front of house offered a choice of two lager and having chosen then came to say she had been off and there was only one .Ushered into the dining room too quickly as hadn’t time to finish our drinks. Forgot to bring the wine , and service too fast . We asked to have a rest between courses and that was adhered too So food definitely 5 Stars , but needs to improve on service

This is our third visit and once again it was exceptional! Michelin standard food. Excellent value for money. Staff are very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. If you appreciate good food and enjoy fine dining then this is the place for you.

Came across this restaurant totally by chance when I was looking for somewhere outside the mad traffic of Oxford to meet up with some American guests. Based in an 17th century English pub in the pretty village of Islip, the food is anything but traditional - in a good way. We had the tasting menu. It was utterly delicious and excellent value. I should also mention that we had arrived before opening time but the charming and friendly staff made us very welcome nevertheless.

Great new destination in Islip. If the bar menu is this good, I can't wait for the full restaurant to open in a month or so. The renovated interior is great, with comfortable seating and a relaxed ambience. Space is limited so make sure that you book. Everything on the "tapas with a twist" menu is delicious. I have already eaten there twice and will soon be back for more. Outstanding. An update on 23rd June 2024. The Cygnet's first Sunday lunch opening. Delicious food, as ever, and a meal to remember. Highly recommended for those who want a Sunday lunch that has nothing to do with the traditional meat and two veg. If there are more Sunday openings, book early and book often.

This is definitely not a pub grub type of place. It is a Michelin star standard fine dining and haute cuisine establishment. We drove from London and our party of five felt the journey well worthwhile. The starters and small plates were imaginative and we were all surprised that such a lot of flavours and textures could be packed into the bite sized parcels. Our main courses of duck, turbot and rib-eye beef did not disappoint. Our server Diana was friendly and efficient. It was also good to see the Chef Patron Paul Welburn in the kitchen. Why hasn't this place been awarded a Michelin Star?

Delicious tasting menu where you can flex between ‘normal’ menu and vegetarian menu. Staff were so friendly and welcoming, all set in a lovely inn. A really special evening out.

Refreshingly relaxed tasting menu in a charming old pub in Islip. Excellent service and good value for the price point. Food was all beautiful, delicious, and surprisingly filling. Highly recommend. Only note is that the dining room would definitely be quite noisy when full of customers.

Enjoyed the tasting menu here, good was really well cooked and flavours were amazing, there is both a meat option and a vegetarian option catered for. The appearance of the food was excellent and each course was exciting to eat. We sat in the bar area where you can watch things being cooked this is quite differently. There is equally a restaurant area as well. I'd come back here again in future. Very happy

Read the other reviews. All the adjectives apply: amazing, super, exciting, superb! You could list every superlative you could think of. Every detail has been carefully considered; it's as close to perfect as any human endeavor can be. (I hate canned music in the background, but that, I fear, is my problem.)

Taster menu was delicious. First visit as a birthday treat. Super, super food and service. Each amazing course were surpassed by the next. The lamb was my favourite, soooo tasty!

We were a table of four friends having Saturday lunch 3 courses. It was unbelievably good value for the quality of food. We got amuse bouches aswell as amazing bread and butters. Wine was well priced, service was impeccable and the food, amazing. Cod croquette on a spicy pepper sauce with taramasalata- delicious. A ribeye that cut like butter and melted in my mouth and a burnt vanilla coconut and mango dessert. To top it all a card, candle and fudge for my wife’s birthday. Top notch food, attention to detail, welcoming staff, faultless service and easy parking. Just watch your head on the glitterball if you’re over 6ft!

My husband, 10 month old baby and I had lunch here today and couldn’t recommend it more. It’s probably (almost definitely) too nice for a baby but the staff made us feel so incredibly welcome and catered for us (they do have high chairs and portable change table). On top of the excellent and warm service the food was 5 star. What a wonderful place!

Highly accomplished cooking. On a par with some of the very best restaurants in the country (and at reasonable prices). Deserves to be busier but no doubt that will change once Mr Michelin pays a visit and grants them the star which will inevitably come their way.

What an amazing food experience! I haven’t had such a great dining experience in ages. All the meals were so special in terms of texture and flavours, all were done absolutely amazing and it’s very hard to choose one that stood out the most. The tasting menu is just pure perfection. I highly recommend the wine tasting with it as well. The staff were very friendly and excited to tell us about the food as well. I was shocked by how amazing the food was, especially that it’s a place in the middle of the village. Deserves a Michelin star without a shadow of a doubt

Absolutely exquisite food at decent prices. The chef cooks everything with a light touch but with bags of flavour. The menu (two courses) came with beautiful amuse bouches, and everything was a delight. The service was relaxed rather than formal (perfect for us) and the staff were very friendly and helpful. My first thought was ‘if the food is as good as the decor we’re in for a treat’. And boy, was it a treat! The food was as good or better than we have had anywhere else, certainly on a par with any Michelin star restaurant. A small but perfectly formed menu with delicious flavours and inventive twists. The service was impeccable and friendly which made for a relaxing long lunch. And talking of decor…the most fabulous loos I have ever seen….I want a pink glitter ball in mine please!

I am lost for words, I have been lucky to have eaten in many high end so called Michelin stared restaurants, but this place is off the scale. Paul and his team not only change the menu monthly, but the standard is incredible and such good value for money, the staff are incredible they talk you through each course in a relaxed manor, it’s a taste sensation my friends who introduced us Dave and Suz, what a wonderful evening, can’t wait to come back and sample another experience 🙏

A warm and relaxed welcome greets you as you enter and visually you are met by the kitchen pass with assorted chefs going about their business. The warm and personable service continues as you go through a series of rooms that lead to the main dining room and attractive bar. The lunch menu was short but varied and revealed an inventive use of ingredients. The dishes were beautifully presented and the balance of textures and flavours was well judged. On the day we did experience slow service from the kitchen. The restaurant was busy, but the slowness did not effect the quality of the food nor the pleasantness of the front of house staff.

We have just got back from our first experience at the cygnet restaurant, and all we can say is wow. The staff at the restaurant went above and beyond to make us feel so comfortable, the matradee was so accommodating and made us feel like we were the only ones there. We would like to give a special shout out to our waitress Diana, she is an absolute credit to this establishment, now moving on to the food, I have never in my life tasted food so full of flavour and so beautifully crafted. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. We will definitely be going back and would fully recommend to anyone.

Wonderful fine dining experience and excellent service! Both the waiter and mixologist explained the origins and ingredients of the dishes and drinks in detail, which was a lovely touch. We will definitely be back.

We went for a date night dinner and had an amazing evening. If this place does not have a star in the next 12 months, the reviewer should move to tyre department of the company :). Delicious food, great wine pairings, incredibly friendly staff and the best cheese dish I have had in any of the 1 - 3 star restaurants I have been lucky enough to visit around the globe. And I live 10 miles away! A hidden gem, you will not be disappointed. BTW, I have written 3 reviews ever in my life - these guys deserve the praise and will be seeing me many times again. Enjoy!

Four of us came to celebrate a friend's 60th birthday. on entering, we were greeted warmly and were able to see the busy kitchen which was spotless. We enjoyed a pre lunch drink in the lounge bar. All the staff were very friendly and efficient. After making our selections the flavour of our 3 course lunch were both innovative, filling and delicious, enjoyed in a comfortable setting with a lovely ambience. I would highly recommend this little gem.

Very lucky to have a chef like Paul Welburn and a restaurant like The Cygnet (at the Swan Inn) pretty much on our doorstep. First ate here at the beginning of 2023 and then finished the year with a great tasting menu on New Year’s Eve. All aspects of the evening were terrific. There’s no rush and time to relax with drink in the front bar before going through to the dining room to eat. The whole menu was fantastic and the high point for me was the sirloin and the short rib. Great skills on display and beautifully tasting food. The dining room has a nice atmosphere at the service is fantastic. The staff at The Cygnet are friendly and clearly know their stuff. Would definitely recommend anyone to come here and feel very fortunate to have something this good so close to home.

Absolutely Marvelous, the food, the service, and some delightful art on the walls. We dined here for my partners birthday, with a 8month old baby and we could not have felt more welcomed. It was the evening of 29th December, so the restaurant was still looking festive with a 10ft Xmas tree dressed in white bright lights, and icicles hanging from the charming oak beams. The food was fantastic from beginning to end, my standout dish was the pork neck with, kohlrabi carbonate, the pork was melt in the mouth, a slight pickle on the kohlrabi to cut through the creaminess of the sauce, topped with what I believe to be parmesan. Let me also not forget to mention the drinks, a glass of the red, cotes du rhone, full bodied and well balanced on the palette, and we couldn't resist ordering a gingerbread old fashioned to share as I was driving. Overall an amazing evening, and I would definitely recommend.

Superb gourmet food, good atmosphere in a nice old English village. Worth a detour from Oxford or Bicester outlets if you want fine dining.

Had a fantastic dinner here, the food was some of the best I have eaten in a long time (especially the version). Amazing flavours and dishes for a good price. My only criticism is the interior design - it needs a good refresh, feels tacky/cheap and brings the service and food down! If this was improved it would be the top restaurant in Oxfordshire without doubt.

The Swan has reinvented itself with a total refurbishment and is headed by Paul Welburn who was awarded a Michelin star at The Oxford Kitchen and has been awarded 3 AA Rosettes at the AA Awards 2023. You enter the reception with a full view of the working kitchen and are very warmly welcomed and shown to the lounge area for pre-dinner drinks. The range of cocktails must be tried as they are very special. The menu is set and split into left and right of the page. Left being for omnivores and the right for vegetarians but you can also switch from side to side which is exciting. They have an extensive wine list but we chose the matched flights of wines which turned out to be just perfect - many top class restaurants who offer matched wines are not very good at doing it but The swan excels in excellent choices. The four course, but really five with the superb canapés, is truly mouth-wateringly lovely. Every ingredient prepared with love and presented with style and elegance. I have never in my life eaten Venison sourced, prepared, cooked and presented in such an amazing way with a jus to die for. I thoroughly recommend booking a table and enjoying the excellent cuisine on offer here - you will not be disappointed.

This was an excellent lunch - definitely one of the best restaurants in the Oxford area on the basis of this meal. It was fairly priced too (certainly by London standards...). I had lamb - both rump and belly with confit potatoes. Impeccably cooked with an excellent jus. My companion had risotto - again v good. Attentive service. Nice glass of house wine. Made an overcast November day v pleasant.

We had a fantastic night at The Swan celebrating my mother in laws birthday. From the moment I walked through the door, nothing was too much trouble. Our cocktails were delicious, the serving staff were amazing at all times. Once we sat down to eat every dish came with a clear description and the wine pairing was explained perfectly. Compliments to the chefs for the lovely sample menu. Although it may be strange to mention, the plates and cutlery were particularly nice and I look forward to visiting again. It's been a while since we "fine dined". We'd planned this visit with some friends who live locally to the restaurant and who had dined there recently. Our friends are experienced "diners" and when they said that they were seriously impressed with The Cygnet that was good enough for us. The set menu was a triumph and in our view, super value for money, given the quality and what we had served to us in addition to the four courses, not to mention the fabulous service! Simply first class from the moment you walk in and see smiling employees greeting you. Wonderful cocktails that are hard to find in restaurants and, of course, a Michelin star menu. Each dish was better than the last, and the professional service was rare these days. Many thanks to all for a wonderful evening. Worth the visit from central London - incredible food & service! We recently visited the restaurant via train and were amazed by how scenic/convenient the entire journey was from both central London and Bicester Village. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, with the overall ambience and service far exceeding our expectations. We selected the tasting menu (with wine pairing) and really enjoyed the presentation of every single dish. We loved how there was a story behind each dish, with a unique combination of flavours! Eager to return during Christmas - I can’t even begin to imagine how beautiful the main dining room will look like given the high ceilings and decorative lights.

Visited the restaurant last week and had a selection of small bites, as well as a couple of cocktails. The food was incredible, the lamb fries were a particular favourite. The staff were friendly and informative, definitely looking to head back as the menu refreshes.

This was a lovely spot for my special birthday lunch. All the staff are very welcoming and smiley, which creates an immediately positive impression. Service was excellent, prompt and personal. The lunch menu is (rightly) quite limited, and everything we ordered was beautifully presented and very tasty. There is plenty of choice of wine by the glass which is welcome so you can wine/food match easily. The building is very attractive with flower tubs and wisteria against the soft stone. There is a good-sized car park opposite for customers so access is easy. I would definitely come again

Sun shining on a flowery terrace in a pretty Oxfordshire village set the scene. A member of staff opening the door with a welcoming smile just before we reached it set us in a positive mood. Immediately seeing the chef in an ‘open’ kitchen also smiling instilled confidence. Our table in an attractive but unfussy dining area was well dressed with stylish cutlery and ceramic and all our immediate needs were catered for promptly and efficiently. Bread/whipped butters, cocktails and menus etc. The lunchtime menu is short with few choices but there are good and understandable reasons for that. We both chose confit of belly pork with spiced pineapple, smoked emulsion and mustard which was melt in the mouth. And then a roast stonebass with celeriac puree and mussels and apple and for me a heritage rib eye steak with ox cheek cake and blackberries and cauliflower - both perfectly cooked and the ideally sized portions for lunch. We chose a selection of wines by the glass to complement each dish. For afters we had a raspberry desert with cream cheese, hazelnut & tuile and a honey ice with curd and brown butter cake. All delicious. This was not an inexpensive meal but, for a 70th birthday special occasion, worth every penny. I hope that Paul and his team make a real ‘go‘ of this enterprise and receive many tip top accolades – he’s certainly doing all the right things!

I'm hoping that I was just here on an off night, as when we went during the soft start, we had what were essentially British tapas in the bar and they were stunning and inventive, and the proprietors were really keen to listen to feedback. We got the impression that this was going to be a very special place indeed. However, going back for dinner in the restaurant, I was pretty disappointed. The food is more style than substance, and the cheese course consisted essentially of a sort of lumpy porridge with a bunch of cheese melted into it. It was very interesting, but please don't offer it as "the cheese course". A selection of local cheeses (and there really are some excellent ones in the area) would have been much more welcome. I also felt that dining room was a bit souless, unlike the bar area which is lovely. I'm not giving up on them, but it didn't do as well as it should have, given the excellent reputation of the chef/owner (and the really quite excellent tapas they do in the bar).

First time eating at the Cygnet and we were not disappointed! Every dish we ate was incredible and I have to say the cocktails were some of the best I’ve ever tasted! The service was also exemplary. The only thing we found odd was the choice of decor in the dining room…the rest of the venue is really tastefully done, but found the dining room to be very underwhelming and didn’t seem fitting with the standard of the rest of the restaurant. Otherwise everything was 10/10

An amazing spot! We were taken care of from start to finish. From the beautifully mixed (and beautiful looking) cocktails in the lounge, to the staff's expert service and knowledge about the food and wine, we couldn't have asked for a better experience. The Cygnet restaurant itself is peaceful and cosy, yet full of atmosphere. Each course of the set menu was superb (although the Hake was particularly good!) and the wine flight plan to go with it was a perfect match. We couldn't recommend it more, definitely a gem worth discovering ✨️

We had a lovely evening here, which started the second that we arrived with the warm greeting we received, right through to the second we left for carriages. The food was outstanding and the wine pairing faultless. Definitely worthy of a Michelin star and leaves...

Tried the new Lunch Menu. Overall, it was slightly heavy for us. The duck egg appetiser needs to be mixed well with the pea sauce below or would be too creamy as the fried duck stick is also greasy. Trout was cooked well, though because the appetiser was greasy enough, I would not have gone through without the pickles and the shrimp, which gave the saltiness to the dish. The beef was slightly overcooked to my taste, though this is more preference based as my friend enjoyed it. The red sauce was too salty and would have liked to pour it myself instead of the waitress initially pouring it. The sautéed wild mushrooms were perfectly cooked. The restaurant itself is clean and well maintined.

Wonderful food on the set price (£60) menu. We went on a Saturday night and there was a good atmosphere. Wine was mainly expensive but had an excellent bottle of Italian red from Puglia for just over £32.

Had an amazing meal, the food was delicious and well presented. The staff were friendly and efficient. If you ate at The Oxford Kitchen previously, you won't be disappointed. Can't wait to go again.
