Staying on holiday in Sedbergh so looked for pubs in area for evening meal. So glad we chose The Swan. Lovely setting and warm welcome as soon as we entered. The landlord was very friendly and showed us to our table which had views of the hills. Menu had good choice and when food game was piping hot and tasty. Definitely recommend and plan on going back while we are in area

A lovely gem of a pub! So nice to visit a proper good old fashioned pub rather than the ubiquitous gastro pubs! Visited this evening with my family. Welcoming and friendly landlady and good food. Good social distancing measures in place too which was reassuring. We’ll definitely be back.

Table booked for 1pm, four adults, two children. After ordering our meals, the food finally arrived nearly 45mins later at 2pm - two very hungry children who were getting impatient were quite well behaved considering. Meals average but still nice, pub itself is very old & dated, due to the social distancing the men have to go outside to use the toilets - it was raining too, so didn't go down to well.

We agreed to stop here en route to Scotland for lunch making quite a detour to get there and arrived 20 minutes early. Our friends in another car and ourselves got out and agreed to wait and we’re just getting the dogs out when an elderly gentleman shouted out of a bedroom window ‘what are you doing!’ We explained we were stopping for lunch and realised we were 20 minutes early so just getting the dogs out, he shouted ‘get your dogs on a lead!’ We explained again what we were doing (again) he then shouted rather aggressively ’what are you doing!?’, our friend explained again and was met with silence, I then got out of the car to another ‘what are you doing!’ I asked if he was ok and he looked rather startled and somewhat meekly ‘yes’ and closed the window, He clearly has a problem talking to women as as he was incredibly rude talking to my wife and our friend in the other car. Our friends were even more taken aback as they have been going there for 20 years hence the detour, needless to say we won’t return.

Went as a party of 6 for dinner. Only 2 other people in the pub. Only 1 real ale but well kept. No mains water and told tap water was murky so had to buy bottled water. Range of mains. Steak and kidney pudding was good, steak and ale pie was reheated too quickly so dried up.Very pleasant landlady and dog friendly. Pub garden looked good but better weather needed

Yesterday evening, my partner and I stumbled upon this beautiful, original pub in the middle of the countryside. The local residents and lady working behind the bar were equally as welcoming. Drinks were very reasonable and the food was also lovely - definitely recommend the Cumberland sausage and mash. The log fire was atmospheric and kept us lovely and warm. Snooker, Pac-Man and a fruit machine were there for entertainment. Overall, an enjoyable evening spent in a traditional pub. We definitely will visit The Swan Inn again if we are in the area. Thank you.

First day of our annual break to Sedbergh and in need of a light lunch, not easy on a sunday, made worse by it being Fathers Day so called in on the off chance, luckily they where running a lunch menu, we decided on the burger and chips, burger patty very good and no its not a Rustlers burger as claimed in a previous post on here, they actually come from a local butchers, chips some of the best we have had for many a long time all washed down by a very well kept pint of bitter and the bill did not bring on a heart attack, rest of the lunch menu would not break the bank either, so if you are in the area give them a go, you will not be disappointed. Wasn’t sure about visiting this pub, but the food was fantastic! And I am an extremely picky eater!!! Had a nice little fire going in the front room where we were. The lady that waited on us was very nice, and excellent service. This place has been in business since 1590, during the reign on Elizabeth I. That is AMAZING!! Wanted to eat there again tonight - out last night in this area - but closed on Monday’s. I had the smoked salmon patty starter (which was delicious!!!), and scampi as the entree. They were also excellent. Husband had the beef, mushroom & cheese pie with creamed potatoes - cleaned his plate!!

Evitar!

Popped in to The Swan on our way back from Sedbergh on a sunny afternoon. Sat in the gardens we were served our well cooked, reasonably priced food by a lovely local lady. My wife's scampi was listed as "whole tail" and it clearly was - not the usual mismatch between description and meal - well done. My grandson's 16 oz gammon was probably even heavier and consumed with gusto and I managed the one foot of Cumberland sausage. When we pass this way, we will certainly call in again.

Wanted somewhere nice to take mum for Easter Sunday lunch, and fancied somewhere new to me. After a little drive out of Sedbergh, over an army bridge on the A683 you find the delightful Swan Inn. Halfway between Sedbergh and Carnforth. Good website offered great food and welcome - so after a preliminary visit for a pint on Saturday, we booked for Sunday 2pm. Lovely wood fire going - nice old coaching house decor and a very welcoming landlady. Quite extensive menu with some very interesting ideas. We chose three different starters of mushrooms, creel prawns and a fantastic greek feta salad, which was delicious! Mains chosen were - massive..... Pork loin in honey, steak and kidney pudding - and I for some stupid reason attacked a wonderful mixed grill - with everything. Superbly cooked food, very tasty and loads of it! Sensibly priced bottle of wine and some wainwrights bitter saw us good for the afternoon. Definitely a pub worth visiting for a quick drink, a session hiding from the rain or any size meal. Do not be put off by reports of road closure - pub is open and access is easy!

Food was inedible. Ordered soup of the day thinking that would be the best ...... A big resounding no. It was potato and leek - it was stringy, bland and felt like it was thickened with gum or some other thickening agent. The bread roll that came with the soup was stale and hard. I told the woman that served it and she still charged me for it even though I didn't eat it. When paying I also noticed the fingernails of this woman were very long and dirty. Firstly, I have been to this pub a few times previously and never been that impressed by the food, drinks, service or anything else really. But it has a kids play area, so I keep giving it the benefit of the doubt. This time was the straw that broke the camels back though and I just had to say something in the hope I can save others from this place. The most awful pub and service I have ever experienced. Visited with my four-year-old son. Threatening and rude landlord and landlady. Really intimidating. Think the landlord is ex-military, poncing about in commando trousers – we can still see you! He needs to get a life and realise all he is good for now is serving people drinks and quite frankly, if he can't do that, the place should be closed down... Or knocked down, preferably still with him inside. An experience I will not be putting myself through again. Don't go! Don't think you may catch them on a good day, they are the same every day. Every aspect terrible, terrible, terrible! If it was possible to score in minus's, I would!

For a pub so dependent on passing trade, this place needs to get its act together if it wants to survive. Another reviewer mentioned that the place is always empty. I may be able to give you some idea as to why! We arrived at dinner time, hungry and thirsty on a beautiful, warm July evening. We entered the pub and were completely ignored by the woman serving at the bar. I asked for menus and she simply pointed to them, without speaking, so I got them myself. We sat down, looked through them, and no one came near us to ask if we wanted drinks, to serve us or anything. We sat for about 5 mins, then got up and walked out. As we passed the bar, the woman there just looked at us as we left, without saying a word to us. We were a large group and would have spent a lot of money. Commercial suicide.

Have stopped here several times, usually for a drink occasionally for food. Generally fairly satisfied.Called today, a packet of nuts, a chocolate bar, a pint of lager and a large glass of wine. The nuts were three weeks out of date, the lager was flat. I did eat the nuts and reluctantly drank the lager, however when I returned the glasses to the bar, I informed the landlord that the nuts were out of date (he couldn't argue with that, the date was on the packet) II also informed him that the lager was flat. He argued with that, saying it was a new barrel. I am an ex-landlord and know that there are several reasons for flat beer unfortunately, this landlord just turned and said "pleased you've had a nice day" what an ignorant prat. I told him quietly so his other customers could not hear me and all I expected was a "thank you, for letting me know". No wonder the place is almost always empty!!!!!

We have visited in the past and always been reasonably happy. Today was not a good experience. The bread was stodgy for both the egg mayonnaise baguette and the rarebit. The egg was congealing and the ‘seasonal salad’ was just a mishmash of little bits! So rather expensive at £27.85 for the above plus two traybakes and a small pot of tea. Sadly highly unlikely to return.
