The Swan in York

The Swan is one of a clutch of York pubs, often dotted around the edge of the city centre, which can be described as good old-fashioned boozers. With pleasant wood-clad rooms & small back yard all served by a single bar it prides itself first and foremost on the excellent quality of its ales. Snacks including crisps, wasabi peas, pork pies and other delicacies complement the fine ales on offer. No background music/TV/gaming machines or other public house distractions. Dogs are welcome.

A bit old fashioned but very busy, and a nice walled in garden full of shrubbery.

Very nice pub, great selection of beer, excellent service. The outdoor seating area is a plus for a summer evening. Will definitely go again...several times!

Excellent traditional and well kept real ale pub. Beer well kept and in great fettle. We didn't have food, so I can't really give it a rating. Highly recommended indeed.

Try this pub! This pub has been maintained in a traditional 1930s style with little change. For this reason the pub has been featured in CAMRA's guide to great pubs for the atmosphere, styling and nice selection of drinks.

We didn't eat so can't rate the food but a lovely place with a gorgeous garden!

A lovely old pub located just outside of the centre of York next to the famous Bishy Road! Good selection of draft ales and a great beer garden.

Great pub old traditional with vineyard beer garden my only criticism is quality of real ales there's plenty of choice but they don't get the top dog brewerys on enough and bar staff need to be trained to pull a proper pint

Another great pub in the neighborhood, a perfect pairing with The Slip Inn for a few pints (or more). Met the owner, great guy. This is a properly rustic pub that fits the area so well. Was told this is the “South Bank” and it was my favorite part of York. Anyway, an extensive selection of draft and cask. Had a great pint of Landlord. Some quality locals/regulars in the pub towards the end of the night. A lot of fun here. Stories for life.

Great local. Good atmosphere inside, old traditional. Great outdoor space, even in winter as they have plenty of heaters under cover as well as an area for when it's sunny!

This becomes my local when staying in York. They have a great selection of well kept ales and as a "Heritage pub" have retained the attractive décor of the art deco style interior and the Landlord is a fanatcal believer in the "proper pub" - thisplace does him proud. Unusual set up with a corridor with main bar and two rooms each side which have serving doors. A vine and hop covered garden and open area to the rear. Staff always knowledgeable and friendly, with nice chatty locals up for a laugh. Latest visits (5-10/9/23) shows they still have a glorious range of rotating well kept cask ales and open at 2pm, so a crafty pint is available before the chip shop opens at 4pm. The garden area is reasonably large and has plenty of tables and chairs. Sit and watch everyone marvel at the grapes growing or ruffling the hops.

A Real pub just like walking back to the 60s and 70s with great selection of Beers and nice atmosphere and staff

Fantastic stay. Great room, lovely features, spotlessly clean. Had great sleep, bed and pillows amazing. Had drink on arrival in the lovely bar. Breakfast this morning was fantastic..especially the eggs Benedict which was cooked to perfection. Friendly staff, made our anniversary stay absolutely perfect! We will definitely be back xx

Cant always get a space outside - possibly because im not local and the one time i did this bloke sat with us and I'd never heard such bull#@£%. My friend verified that it was bull as she knew him - once!

Wonderful 'proper' pub on the edge of the city centre in York. Great interior and an excellent range of well kept beers. The Swan is a free house, as is the Slip round the corner, another lovely pub. I've visited a few times in the past and will be going to York again in a fortnight for a small pub crawl and this will certainly be one of the places I will visit. Sadly more and more pubs are not opening until 2:00 or 4:00, or worse still are closing down. We need to support them or we will lose an important element of our English heritage. Avoid the big national pub chains and support your traditional old pubs.

What a quaint pub with a relaxing atmosphere. Not a lot of seating, but lots of room in the beer garden. The beer garden was partly covered and had heaters. Great selection of beer and gins. Thoroughly enjoyed our evening and will definitely return

A great friendly local that is near the station and the city centre. When you walk into The Swan it is like stepping back in time with the red cushioned seats and stools and the separate bars. A definite visit in York if you like a pub with character and history.

Lovely good old fashioned pub with a bar and a parlour. Wide range of gins (my thing) and other spirits to choose from. Also a good range of real ales to choose from (hubbies thing) Clean and comfy and welcoming is how I'd describe this place. Great for all ages. Has a lovely beer garden, white washed walls planted up. Would recommend to anyone for a drink alone or with friends. Dog friendly.

Down here most years for the Ebor festival and always spend time in this pub. great wee venue on the way to the races with a beer garden for when the weather is good.

Nice chilled out pub. Friendly and the first pub you'll hit when you come across the bridge. Plenty of places to sit and a nice outdoor area.

Just a glorious traditional pub away from the true hustle and bustle over the river. The beer garden is simply delightful and but for having to go to the races, we would have merrily remained there! The staff were brilliant too. Gave me three taxi firm numbers to get to the races.

A lovely surprise. Looks a little tired from the outside but once you step in there is an immediate change in atmosphere. Very well looked after beers and a tremendous range plus ciders. Reminded me of my local when I was a youngster. We sat in the garden and met some very friendly folks and their mad dogs... and that was just at lunchtime.

Lovely neighborhood pub with loads of character. Real ales, a small beer garden and cozy rooms. Best of all, it's just off the City Walls but feels like it's miles away from the tourist crush in York.

Been there for dinner. Have to say very nice food and amazing customer service. Will go again

Proper pub, quality ales, service with a smile. If it gets a bit busy try the Slip Inn round the corner. You won't be disappointed with either. A++ Will drink there again

Dropped in for the first time on sat ......won't be the last time ...I've never been in a cleaner pub in my life ...someone obviously takes a pride in this place ....and husband loved the beer !!

This is a traditional pub in every sense of that description. Such a delight to see a large range of beers and drinks available, sectioned off rooms, no food offered, no music, purely packed with people and their dogs having a conversation….. such a delight. Highly recommended venue 😎

A "proper" pub. I visited with a friend who enjoyed her first pint since the first COVID lockdown. Very warm and welcoming and served York gin - what more can you ask for? We'll be back on our next visit to York.

Great pub, good beers and good beer garden. Wide selection of gins and real ales to choose from. Don't visit often as don't live in York but always feel welcome when I come here. York has many good pubs and this is one of them.
