Really friendly staff good quality food great selection of beer and wine and lovely breakfast all at a very reasonable price

Location is good. Food is not worth it. I've been for a roast before and it was beautiful. This time went on a Friday evening and the food wasn't worth the money. Charged an extra £2 for a portion of beans on a kids meal and got given a spoonful (picture attached if i can) There is a little park for the kids, which is nice.

Rude staff that weren’t interested in smiling or talking to us, sausage and mash was disgusting—instant mash, instant gravy with lumps of powder in it, and burned generic sausages. Kids pizza was just a lump of what looked like American cheese slices in the middle of it. Chips over cooked. Everything needed salt.

We recommended, to family visiting Swindon for the first time, to visit Sun Inn at Coate for lunch because when we went (probably over a year ago as we’re on the other side) it was good and our kids could play while we ate. Well, thank goodness our friends were late and the adults didn’t waste £ or time eating there (their kitchen closed at 2). While we waiting we were shocked at the price of a child’s meal deal (£8 for a main and an dessert) but our children needed lunch. Absolutely appalled at the state of the food served. Budget pubs have better quality food, and I did not want to feed my children this. The fish fingers were clearly double fried and dripping down down in oil, and the food came way too quickly (and the food wasn’t even that hot), definitely pre-prepared and sitting and waiting for an order 🫤 and they didn’t even get their ice cream as the kitchen closed. We won’t be returning anytime soon. And embarrassed for the intro to Swindon for our guests.

Had a very disappointing meal here on Thursday 1st August 2024. Party of 6. 3 of the meals took over an hour to come out. Were informed that the other 3 would take longer because they were on a different order, was the way their ticket system works! The pub was not busy. The 'medium' curry was more like a very hot madras! Not nice. The mac & cheese was bland & tasted like it came out of a tin or a very poor ready meal! The other 3 meals were cancelled because they took so long & a refund was demanded. The refund was eventually agreed but the customer was informed that it would take about 3 weeks to be paid back onto the card!! Needless to say, we will not return there for a meal again. Such a shame because it's a lovely pub. Just needs some proper management, a decent 'chef' & one rude female staff member replacing!!

Stopped here as I was heading through. It's terrible to say it, but it's not very memorable, food is average. Place is very family orientated, so if you need a place to stop in good weather then come here with the kids as they have a decent playground from what I could see. Overall, won't get you excited to come back. Oh by the way the servers are lovely, so kudos to them.

Close to the highway. Spacious and clean room for disabled people. Breakfast included, but very limited (no yogurt, no hot milk, no sweets, no fruit). Possibility of dinner. Quick service for dinner, a little less for breakfast. Pet freindly (no in the breakfast room). Spacious parking in front of the property. Passing through for one night, recommended.

Excellent for our purpose of stop over .

We decided to pop in for dinner, the menu was very poor ( limited) but we were very hungry so we persevered and my wife ordered fish and chips but no fish, so she ordered ham egg and chips and I ordered macaroni cheese. There was a delay between meals through no fault of there’s so we asked them to keep one warm so we could eat together, they said they couldn’t! Not very helpful so my wife started her meal, after a couple of bites she left it as it was cold and tasteless, after half hour my Mac n cheese came out which was also cold and tasteless. We found the manager to be unhelpful and obnoxious and the food to be awful. What a shame, it used to be a great pub. Won’t be going back

Upon pulling in looked okay, upon entering the bar it looked okay but understaffed with one person doing check in and serving the bar. Entering our room it looks okay, but then it all starts to change. The bathroom has black mould in the tile grouting and thick limescale over the shower, but there was also brown skid marks in the bottom of the toilet. The floor throughout was also dirty. The bed was at least clean from what we could see. Upon going down for food we went to close the windows to find one didnt even close on the handle, lucky we were able to close it by pushing the pins up from the outside. In the pub/restaurant menus are filthy and have never seen a cleaning cloth and seemed the tables rarely saw anything more than a quick brush off. Burgers clearly frozen as mushy, watery and tasteless, fries over cooked, and the steak not described at all as came in a spicy marinate with chillie oil, if it had of been described like this on the menu I would not have ordered it due to intolerances but after a long day and starving it was a case of needs must. Oh yes and the steak knife was a health and safety hazzard, it was so thin and flexible it was bending like a sheet of tin foil while just trying to cut a grilled tomato. Breakfast was a little better but the hash browns still raw in the middle and beans were cold. Over all it was a terrible stay.

Enjoyable weekend retreat Live music on friday night was a bonus

My family from London use The Sun Inn regularly, as they stop over and rent some rooms. We always meet up here for drinks and dinner. Breakfasts and food are always very tasty and a good choice. Great outside area to sit in, if our weather is good enough! Loads of parking. The setting by Coate Water is a lovely view and easy to walk to.

6 of us eating here orderd at same time orders turned up at 3 separate times when we finished our meal we wanted to order dessert told kitchen closes at 19.45 so can't order 1 of us for our main meal wanted fish and chips told no fish available on a Friday evening this pub has definitely gone down hill never again disgusting.

Service was great, very friendly and helpful staff. Food was very disappointing. Paid a good price for what I thought was home made food but the pizzas were frozen and the falafel burger was frozen shop purchased too. None of the food is made fresh.

Lovely dog friendly bar and garden. Plenty of seating, large car park. Next to large country park.

Went only for a meal with 5 family members. Despite a reservation half the menu was unavailable. We got, apparently, the last two fish and chips, no pizzas, no eggs, salad off the menu too and it was only a Wednesday around 18.30. When questioned about where the coleslaw was that was advertised to come with the burgers the response was that they had run out of that too... Underwhelming would be too generous... Staff were ambivalent, service was slow and more interested in paying attention to the lovely border collie that was standing on a stool and the bar, about 80% of the tables had "reserved" signs on them seemingly to discourage people sitting and ordering meals. Disgraceful... The management, if there is any, and the Arkells Brewery need to give this place a good shake up.

I am very disappointed as on a Sunday they stopped serving food at 4 pm, which I feel is too early. I wasn't the only one asking,they missed out on a lot of business.

Terrible food, pizza is frozen from Iceland and cost 17£!!! Disgusting! Order for 2 came with 3 extra portions of sweet potato fries, (BURNED)missing kids meal and missing desert. Manager said he is busy serving other customer when approached. Never ever again this place.

Absolutely brilliant. The staff were polite and helpful, the rooms were enormous, modern and clean, and the breakfast was very good quality. We slept so well with the windows open, and couldn’t hear any road noise at all. I would definitely stay here again.

Terrible food, disgusting pizza (17.50£) just like 2.50£ frozen from Iceland! Manager was rude and did not have a time to speak with us because he was serving other customers. Waitresses wondering about like they don’t know what is going on, order was mixed up, paid 60£ for steak and frozen pizza plus kids chips and gujions😂 never again, absolute shocker!

Gone down hill, not the place it use to be. Well what can I say been back for a Sunday lunch today (26 March '23) what a change new carvery available for Sunday Lunch, wow what an improvement, great quality food and service. Well done to the staff and management for the amazing turn around 19th May 2024.......well the Sunday carvery has been stopped and Sunday roasts removed from menu, what a disappointment. Food can be hit and miss, sometimes great or over cooked and greasy. You can do better than this, staff still great and friendly.

The Sun Inn is local to us & we're able to walk to it... it's also dog friendly, inside & outside.. so great for us to go, have a drink or a meal... with our little dog... the drinks are reasonable...as is the food...we also like the upgraded area outside, inside the barn area & the play area for the children .. just great place to go for everyone...

Greeted by the manager. Extremely helpful staff at a very busy time. Rooms were large and clean. Although busy outside in the beer garden no noise heard in the room. Had an evening meal and breakfast. All very tasty. Would definitely stay here again.

Large pub, perfect park for the children to play while the adults enjoy a drink. Food is good quality especially the burger. Would highly recommend.

I had Sunday roast. Turkey okay cauliflower cheese acceptable, but all other vegetables were tasteless.

Shame this place has let itself go.... Used to be a really reliable local pub, beautiful setting and plenty of potential, the staff are more efficient now, kitchen is a joke, and the atmosphere is aggressive, it goes to show how you change a landlord and the pub changes ... For the worse... Worth not to visit despite it's environs

If you like visiting kennels and the smell of dogs you will like this pub. Avoid weekends during the day as it's full of Coate Water dog walkers who then take their dogs into the pub and the pub then smells of 'woof woofs'

Room took 3 hours to warm up, heating should have been put on in advance of arrival.

Dined here on January 1st around 12 30pm ..sorry but the service wasn't up to par..the bar staff didn't know what white wine was..?..I ordered two burgers but specifically asked for thick cut chips and not the dreadful fries and this was accepted and paid for but hey,out comes the burgers but with fries...come on guys n gals..I won't be returning 🤔

It is such a shame how this pub is so badly organised..came here 1st January for a Birthday meal but boy what hard work it was.Just ordering wine was hard because the very young girls serving literally had no clue what white wine was...got past that one and I ordered two Traditional cheeseburgers but I specifically asked for thick cut chips not fries as these tend to be hard on teeth but yes,when we were served,we were given fries..didn't want to query this as it would've involved us waiting for our chips,then the burger would've gotten cold so we put up with fries..terrible hard things that should be banned to over 10s! Burgers were actually good however when we queried our bill,I was overcharged by £2 and my Brother £1..there seemed one set of prices on the till and another on the actual menu...also no paper receipts offered or given.I think The Sun needs some staff training to say the least.Sorry but won't be returning or recommending.

Rooms are dated but clean and tidy,they're situated adjacent to the Sun Inn, so very convenient. There's a little bit of noise from the main road, but it didn't affect my ability to sleep. The staff in the Sun Inn were friendly and the food is typical pub grub but good quality. The Sun is adjacent to a park so would be a pleasant place to stay in the summer and is dog friendly if you wanted to bring your 4 legged friend with you. Great value for money so will definitely stay again.

Used to do a lovely 3B. Bar staff not trained on changing barrels. Some promise that the manager would arrive after 4 pm but only lager on.

Good food and choice of foods, drinks a little expensive, but good choices there as well. Great place to meet up and spend time with friends!! Been here a number of times, for all daily meals and each time, the food has been spot on. Always make it a point to stop by for a meal when we are here.

This place was beautiful ! The room was warmed before we arrived, so that alone was worth 5 stars on an ice cold night arriving!...modern room, deep bath , huge shower , and very clean with thick towels everywhere ...for a place like Swindon, I'll only be staying here when visiting the inlaws , 100% 😉 Ps , no travel cot available here was the only downside ...so the baby slept on the floor with mum and I had no choice but to sleep in the tall king size bed.

Clean, staff were pleasant. Didn't stay over so can't comment on accommodation. It was a social event

Attended a private function. Staff were all very nice. Drinks were reasonably priced and the got buffet food was excellent.

Best Sunday roast I’ve had out for a long time! 10/10 carvery, would highly recommend. Nice place to visit with family. Also dog friendly.

Excellent food!! We came here for a family 50th party tonight. Great function room, with plenty of tables and seating. There was a great dj and roomy dance area, with doors leading out to a vast garden, with further seating and shelter. What I was super impressed with was the food. The presentation and quality was outstanding for a buffet. Excellent service and efficiency. Staff were friendly and welcoming. The added benefit of a very large free car park for events or get togethers make this pub overall a great place to spend time for lunch, dinner of functions.

I just ate a really nice vegan burger with fantastic chips a great coleslaw. I would recommend this pub for a lovely lunch out with friends. Plus my dog was welcome too.

Room is lovely.. 13/10/23. Booked a room as my dads funeral was this afternoon. Ordered a rump steak, crushed pots etc. Had to ask for a steak knife, guy behind the bar no problem at all. Steak was so tough so I left a lot, and I Ordered med/rare, so much gristle so left loads. Young lady collected my plate and asked all OK. I proceeded to say " well actually " and she smiled took the plates away and never saw her again. Lovely location garden etc, but SOME staff need a bit of customer service training x

Birthday meal. Food was beyond disappointing. The plpughmans consisted of dry asda mini scotch eggs that tasted vile, 2 chunks of cheese, 2 pork pie (again cheap shop bought) 4 rolls abs some pickle. My partner had a daddy long legs cooked in his chips. Aside from that bad food the staff were ok and did accomodate my booking requests for which i was grateful. Wouldn't go again.

Lovely rooms, great breakfast, busy pub.

One of the bartenders was having real trouble with the tills all night. If it wasn’t for lots of people waiting it would’ve genuinely been funny because it was only him having trouble but when it’s a busy Friday night maybe train the staff better so they’re not left wondering what they’re doing wrong all night?

Just a great place to stay . Rooms very tidy and all you need. Great breakfast. Very friendly staff and manager. Highly recommended. Definitely will be staying there every visit to Swindon

We did not stay in the hotel but dropped in for lunch. They were really great on gluten free food. I often have problems with contamination and they just said that they take gluten free very seriously and they were right! Not to mention we got big plates with lovely steak and lamb chops that were tasty and really good portions. A lucky find.

Normally okay but this time they served 4 people before myself so took ages to order then they obviously forgot our food order so had to go and ask where it was waited 45 mins for 2 salads by which time the lettuce was limp and chicken stone cold and for steak salad the dressing seemed to be missing or minimal and where had been sat out for so long beef was also cold and had gone from medium rare to medium well at best and no apologies from staff as I say normally okay but today very disappointing

The place itself is lovely. Good size outside sitting. The reason for my rating is the waiting time. Went there for lunch on Thursday,and it took 1 hour and 15 minutes for a pizza. A very thick pizza base ,very greasy and loaded with all sorts of olives. For 16.50 a pizza,it was very disappointing.

Only had coffee followed by a pint of cider. Sat outside on a nice day - plenty of good seating outside. Please try and do something about the multitude of wasps - difficult I know but they are so annoying.

Visited last week could only sit outside as all inside tables were reserved for bingo.although no one was in the pub.

Late booking for meal with friends as looking for somewhere with music as well. Altho busy when we arrived we where welcomed , then shown to our table in the conservatory at the back. Not too busy in there. Good choice of food on menu , we had a vegetarian and vegan choices as well. Food came quickly and was hot and tasty. We all finished our meals so definitely went down well. Stayed and chatted went thro to listen to band on and off between chatting. Great pub, good food , friendly staff.

Have come here all the time we have lived local. Place has gone down hill recently, such a shame as always liked it here. Food is still lovely but the cleanliness is awful. Disappointing as its a lovely pub!!

Got in time for last lunch call before coach to London

Fantastic morning having a coffee after a walk in the park. Beautiful outside seating area, clean and dog friendly. The staff was so helpful and friendly. When in the area, go and visit.

The breakfast scrambled eggs was over cooked and had so much salt in them that it was disgusting it made my breakfast horrible and I payed 11 pounds 50 for it and not one member of staff asked how my breakfast was was and the kids breakfast was over salted to so much for keeping there salt levels down give it a miss

Awful breakfast. With microwaved sausages and yesterday's bacon the only things on the plate that were freshly cooked were the eggs and hash browns.

Took mum for Sunday Roast. Everything apart from the potatoes and gravy was cold. Meat was so rare it was unpleasant. Carrots were rock hard while the parsnips were soggy. Also quite expensive. Won't be going back.

Really enjoyed our meals, so much better than our last visit

Been here many times for a works lunch with 9 plus guests over the last couple of visits the menu is reduced, service is very slow, food not hot and no rushing the staff, very sad but we won't be coming back when a sandwich takes 45 mins to be delivered whereas an over cooked burger doesn't, shame we all like this place but standards in the last 6 months are very lacking and the staff need to learn a better attitude and how service and customer service should be

Nice place to catch up with family and friends for a meal and a few drinks. Simple food for conservative tastes and pleasant pub environment with good parking and easy access. Nice "British" experience.

I've been here mutliple times. Traditional pub with a fantastic atmosphere, outside seating is abundant and the food is great. Friendly staff. A friend of mine stayed here before his honeymoon but I've never stayed in the rooms. However, I do like the look of them. Mini condos in the seating area, very unique like little houses.

Update June 2023 (now 1 star): How a change in management can destroy a favourite local pub. The menu is now very limited, expensive, small portions, and terrible quality. Burgers were dry and tasteless. Ham egg and chips unappetising to look at, even worse to eat. Staff are fed up by their own admission. The place was filthy. Photos attached. I've left my previous review for comparison (was 5 stars): Really enjoyed it and will be back regularly I'm sure. We've been for lunch twice in a matter of days, once for a sandwich (which was delicious, and a huge plate of food!) and once for Sunday lunch, which was excellent as well. Friendly staff and atmosphere. Dog friendly area too. Tried their Spring Hopper ale .... lovely! Their recently added Smokey ale from Arkells is a new favourite for me. Hope it will stay on for the future. 👍

Met a friend for lunch, the food was tasty. It was a very busy Thursday lunch time, I felt so sorry for the staff there was only two on duty and they were absolutely rushed off their feet - all credit to them (Jamie and Becky I believe)

Was dissopointed having 2 wait 4 over an hour and a half 4 curry and a bowl of chips didn't think it was 2 busy.

My first visit to this place and last I'm afriad. Out of control dog almost bit my other half, whilst trying to save her dog. We had to leave promptly, and were laughed out of the pub. The environment wasn't great, and a pity since our dog is very traumatised. Just try another place, if you're reading this. You arn't missing much.

*Don't bring small dogs* We decided visit the Sun Inn for a few drinks with our little dog, and had to leave because an untrained Staffy was chasing our dog around and trying to bite it aggressively. We had to carry our dog out in order to stop it getting torn apart. When we confronted the owner, who wasn't even strong enough to hold his dog, he simply said, "it's not my dog". Meanwhile, a few people at the bar were laughing, luckily because we managed to pick her up. Of course we were worried about being bit ourselves. The staff handled it terribly and I don't think this is worth a visit ever again, if you have small children or small dogs, I would suggest else where, which is ironic because we came here reading the reviews were dog friendly.
