The Sun Inn in West Dorset

Had a quick stop for some dinner on the way home. As is Sunday a carvary was on the menu which seemed great. However, food was bland. The gravy is out on for you on the plate before you are allowed to put your vegetables on. I asked politely if I could have it on after my vegetables had been put on my plate and was swiftly told I could but would have to go to the back of the queue again! Why is it they can't offer small just of gravy if it's such an inconvenience to have him put it on after? To be honest it's like water with crumbs of meat in so not worth the drama anyway. I have eaten many carvery's in the local area and this is by far the worse i've had by far.

Out of the way but close to the town centre, this pub is a great find. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The menu, whilst not comprehensive, is perfectly adequate. The food quality and presentation is excellent. Highly recommended.

Excellent visit for Mother’s Day. We took my mum out for lunch and everything was fantastic. We were seated and served promptly, excellent service throughout our visit we were never left waiting. The carvery was delicious as always and the chocolate brownie is the best anywhere. I don’t particularly like cauliflower but loved the side of cauliflower cheese (because it was so amazingly cheesy). They were giving out love heart sweets to the mums which was cute.

Perfect evening celebrating husband’s birthday. Warm greetings from staff on entering and throughout evening. We both chose the carvery and both of us had a starter each, which was absolutely delicious leading us onto a fantastic carvery with a wonderful selection of vegetables, yorkies, mouth watering beef and pork. The Chef was attentive while slicing the meats and once I had chosen and placed my veggies to my plate, my server offered to carry my meal to the table as I was using crutches. The Sun Inn staff are polite, attentive and friendly with a family ambience, the food heavenly. Have recommended The Sun Inn to family and friends and will be returning soon for another fantastic meal.

Lovely carvery but the experience spoilt by our waitress constantly petting a dog and then serving us without washing her hands.great food.poor hygiene.

Went today for my partner bday and her mum and dad came as nice surprise... Food: cnt fault the roast spuds, Yorkshire puds and carrots and the gravey was avg ( yes I can cook and very well ) . The rest was avg, the meat was OK but I asked for some of the crisp beef fat and the carver said he wouldn't feed it to his dog . This is his preference and not mine.. My partner was about to go up and get a few extra roast spuds and the waitress said she could NOT , it's a 1 time visit ... Not been to a carvery that you can't get a bit more ? I order a starter but asked how long it would take and I was told 5 mins so I ordered and didn't want the ppl on our table to over wait on me , it took 20 mins and I came back to the table, with .y carvery and had to eat the starter and let my carvery go just warm ... I read the reviews before we went but my expectations were not met on this occasion

Great service and lovely food, I didn't have the carvery like most of our table but it was enjoyed by all. Nice relaxing venue, would advise booking though. 😊

We travel over an hour for this cavery! Always fresh, always plentiful, and it has never disappointed. Very dog friendl which is a bonus, helpful, kind and welcoming staff. Good choice of desserts, drinks and kids food too. Lovely open fire so it feels very cosy

First visit and we wasn't particularly impressed, I had the carvery which was average at best and I have had many to know the difference. Wrong also that you couldn't put your own gravy on, and was told abruptly, that it goes on your plate from from the start, might sound trivial, especially if you like your vegetables dry, most don't of course. My friend's choice of cold meat and salad was just a tiny garnish of salad. Mood and ambience was really good and staff perfectly polite.

Great find food was excellent, we hadn’t booked but staff made room for us.

Went for my birthday. Had a lovely carvery. One negative was that when they collected the plates, they asked if we wanted more drinks which we did but never asked if we wanted a dessert. Initially thought that maybe they were giving us a bit of time after the carvery but 50 minutes passed and other surrounding tables arriving after us were all asked. In the end, we decided to just pay up and leave. Hence the reason for a docked mark on service. A downer on what was supposed to be a celebration meal.

What a top experience Fantastic warm welcome Superb atmosphere with lawyers ceilings and soft yellow bulbs. Carpeting kept noise levels down. Really well laid out pub. Carvery was ezmxcelkebt. All staff on point. Warm friendly and efficient. Didn't book but they found us a table quickly and were never left too long. Really impressed with this one

AMAZING! Had a fantastic Sunday carvery, all the elements of the meal were tasty, there was a fantastic choice of vegetables and the meat was extremely 'melt in the mouth'. The staff were very friendly especially the chef serving the meat, he was chatty and knowledgeable. We will be back!

Have had two visits over the Christmas holidays and both times and found the food, service and atmosphere really good. Have not had the carvery yet but the beef burger, chicken burger, pie of the day and cold cuts have been good value and filling. Many thanks to all at the Sun Inn

Lovely food in a lovely pub and fantastic staff. What more could you wish for. I'm so glad I was shown this gem of a pub. Be warned it gets busy, so book ahead if possible. It's always a good sign a pub been busy. I will be returning whenever I can.

Very nice pub with attentive and friendly staff. Had the carvery that was cooked really well, however we were 3rd and 4th to be served and our whole meal was luke warm. When asked how our meal was we said exactly what I have written here and the waiter's demeanor changed to being not quite so friendly. Such a shame as we were looking forward to our 1st meal here.

We visited the sun inn this evening without booking and whilst very busy, the friendly staff soon found our group of 6 a table and were very welcoming. The food ticked all the boxes and a great atmosphere and friendly staff made it a very enjoyable evening

Thank you for accommodating us as walk-ins for the Sunday Roast. The food was delicious, the staff were welcoming, the atmosphere was warm, relaxed and peaceful (some places can be very noisy during afternoon roast dinners). We have also tried the outdoor seating previously for some nibbles and the review remains exactly the same. We really enjoyed on both occasions and we will definitely return.

Stopped by for Lunch and found that was very full in there, and I didn't have a reservation. However, thanks to the helpful and proficient staff, we were quickly seated after a short wait at the Bar. The Carvery was good value and in all it was a satisfactory meal, although the quantity of meat provided was marginal. Not a bad Lunch but all things considered it was expensive for what it was, which merited giving an average mark, and not a very good one.

I’ve eaten here several times but this was with a large party for a Xmas do. Standards here never slip. The service was brilliant and the carvery was incredible , tender and succulent beef and turkey. I’ll definitely go back because we live in Dorchester but I’d 100% recommend this place to anyone.

Just had an excellent meal with attentive and helpful staff. However, I do think that being charged £7.80 for two glasses of water and lime was ridiculous.

A fabulous tradition style inn with lovely log fire. Carvery is superb and the inn was full even on a Wednesday afternoon. Highly recommended

Carvery beef was very tough to cut. Veggies ok. Staff put gravy on our plates, which I've never encountered before. I personally like to put my own gravy on. My mum had far too much Gravy put on her food. This is the 3rd time we've been here now, and I'm sorry to say that we've not been won over. It's 3 strikes and out for us.

Popped in on the off chance I think we were lucky to get a table as it was packed. The service was very good and had a lovely roast beef baguette and a pretty decent latte.

We found The Sun Inn on google maps last minute, are plans had changed. What a find, lovely welcome and a very nice carvery , roast beef or turkey loads of veg all hot and fresh. I recommend booking in advance as it was very busy, they squeezed us in on a barrel table, not suitable for everyone, we didn’t mind they asked us first.

Good carvery as alway. However we had pre booked our table in advance. On arrival told we had 1 hour then the table was booked for others. I don't appreciate an evening out being cut short that way. Very disappointed 😞

It had been too long since we ate here. We had a great meal, shared a starter and a pudding as one of had steak and the other the carvery for main course. All very tasty and well presented. It was busy but the staff were there when we needed them. Thoroughly recommend The Sun for a good meal.

Amazing service, one of the best Sunday roasts I have ever had. Carvery is excellent for vegans and vegetarians too! Staff really friendly and helpful especially the two young lads who have helped us both times we were there.

All the staff were very friendly and the Roast was delicious. The atmosphere was very warm and inviting.

Brilliant pub, great carvery and table service menu. So good we went two nights on the trot before returning home to that there London.

Stopped here on impulse, was pleased to see a carvery was available on a mid week day, there was a good selection of vegetables and meat and we found the food very enjoyable. The staff were very welcoming, efficient and friendly. A lovely visit.

What a wonderful place, we went as a family as we were on holiday. And because they do a carvery every day. It was amazing, crispy roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings, freshly cooked vegetables, what a choice! And a really good serving of tender beef and pork. All for £13 as over 65's. Staff were so helpful even though rushed off their feet! We even booked up the next evening for another roast. Puddings were incredible too. Well done The Sun Inn

Still dreaming of that carvery...

After a leisurely stroll along the river, we decided to stop at this establishment for a bite to eat. We ordered the hot carvery baguettes and cheese chips for the child. However, upon receiving our order, we were disappointed to find that the baguette was filled with cold ham instead of the hot gammon as advertised on the menu. Additionally, the cheese chips were served in a scorching hot bowl, posing a safety hazard for the child. As a result, we had to transfer the cheesy chips to another plate to avoid any potential burns.

Arrived to a warm welcome all staff very happy and attentive nothing too much trouble. Never felt rushed Lovely food carvery value for money Well done food very good and such a busy restaurant

Come here at least once a year following a week working at the County show, always amazing food, you must have the carvery, chefs mash n garlic butter is amazing. Friendly welcoming staff even when you're covered in mud and tired. But seriously try that carvery.

Absolutely the best experience we have had in months. We go out to dinner maybe twice a month, but this was the best for a while. The girls were absolutely rocking it .

Been many times in the past however this time the attitude from the staff was astonishing and not in a good way. The food (if a little slow) saved it from 1 star. Probably won't return, if you work with the public, it's best not to give your paying customers attitude for 0 reason.

Very very popular Sunday carvery. Very very busy. Servery was a bit slow but worth waiting for. Restaurant was crowded and noisy. Service was minimal. No pilsner. Tough luck if you are diabetic and want to drink beer.

We visited twice during our stay. Carvery was excellent and the set main courses are also fantastic. All food was cooked well and homemade. Staff are friendly. Highly recommended if you are in the area 👍

First time in the Sun Inn, was recommended to me whilst purchasing a lawn mower !!! The chap said best place for a Sunday roast and he wasn't wrong !!! Absolutely delicious 😋......fresh and tasty, lots of meat !!! Will definitely be back.

A busy place where it is best to book in advance, any day of the week. Lucky for us the weather was good so we could eat outside, as we hadn’t booked. Both of us had the carvery and weren’t disappointed. The beef and the turkey were cooked well and easy to eat. The selection of veg was good and the roast potatoes nice and crispy on the outside.

Usually very busy but on this occasion it was not. It was raining hard so this probably influenced people not to go out The carvery is very good and quite cheap

We stopped off for a drink only, but the service was great, we were met with a warm welcome and asked if it was food as well. Will be back for food as it looked amazing.

Mediocre pub, carvery was not the best and not reasonably priced considering the quality and the staff were generally unpleasant and not at all friendly. Would not recommend or go again. Plenty of other nicer places to go to in the area.
