The Sun Inn in West Dorset

It had been too long since we ate here. We had a great meal, shared a starter and a pudding as one of had steak and the other the carvery for main course. All very tasty and well presented. It was busy but the staff were there when we needed them. Thoroughly recommend The Sun for a good meal.

Amazing service, one of the best Sunday roasts I have ever had. Carvery is excellent for vegans and vegetarians too! Staff really friendly and helpful especially the two young lads who have helped us both times we were there.

All the staff were very friendly and the Roast was delicious. The atmosphere was very warm and inviting.

Brilliant pub, great carvery and table service menu. So good we went two nights on the trot before returning home to that there London.

Stopped here on impulse, was pleased to see a carvery was available on a mid week day, there was a good selection of vegetables and meat and we found the food very enjoyable. The staff were very welcoming, efficient and friendly. A lovely visit.

What a wonderful place, we went as a family as we were on holiday. And because they do a carvery every day. It was amazing, crispy roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings, freshly cooked vegetables, what a choice! And a really good serving of tender beef and pork. All for £13 as over 65's. Staff were so helpful even though rushed off their feet! We even booked up the next evening for another roast. Puddings were incredible too. Well done The Sun Inn

After a leisurely stroll along the river, we decided to stop at this establishment for a bite to eat. We ordered the hot carvery baguettes and cheese chips for the child. However, upon receiving our order, we were disappointed to find that the baguette was filled with cold ham instead of the hot gammon as advertised on the menu. Additionally, the cheese chips were served in a scorching hot bowl, posing a safety hazard for the child. As a result, we had to transfer the cheesy chips to another plate to avoid any potential burns.

Arrived to a warm welcome all staff very happy and attentive nothing too much trouble. Never felt rushed Lovely food carvery value for money Well done food very good and such a busy restaurant

Come here at least once a year following a week working at the County show, always amazing food, you must have the carvery, chefs mash n garlic butter is amazing. Friendly welcoming staff even when you're covered in mud and tired. But seriously try that carvery.

Absolutely the best experience we have had in months. We go out to dinner maybe twice a month, but this was the best for a while. The girls were absolutely rocking it .

Been many times in the past however this time the attitude from the staff was astonishing and not in a good way. The food (if a little slow) saved it from 1 star. Probably won't return, if you work with the public, it's best not to give your paying customers attitude for 0 reason.

Very very popular Sunday carvery. Very very busy. Servery was a bit slow but worth waiting for. Restaurant was crowded and noisy. Service was minimal. No pilsner. Tough luck if you are diabetic and want to drink beer.

We visited twice during our stay. Carvery was excellent and the set main courses are also fantastic. All food was cooked well and homemade. Staff are friendly. Highly recommended if you are in the area 👍

First time in the Sun Inn, was recommended to me whilst purchasing a lawn mower !!! The chap said best place for a Sunday roast and he wasn't wrong !!! Absolutely delicious 😋......fresh and tasty, lots of meat !!! Will definitely be back.

Food is okay, typical pub food. There is also a buffet and a nice beer garden with a playground.

A busy place where it is best to book in advance, any day of the week. Lucky for us the weather was good so we could eat outside, as we hadn’t booked. Both of us had the carvery and weren’t disappointed. The beef and the turkey were cooked well and easy to eat. The selection of veg was good and the roast potatoes nice and crispy on the outside.

Usually very busy but on this occasion it was not. It was raining hard so this probably influenced people not to go out The carvery is very good and quite cheap

We stopped off for a drink only, but the service was great, we were met with a warm welcome and asked if it was food as well. Will be back for food as it looked amazing.

Mediocre pub, carvery was not the best and not reasonably priced considering the quality and the staff were generally unpleasant and not at all friendly. Would not recommend or go again. Plenty of other nicer places to go to in the area.

Incredible roast!!! The best potatoes, roasted carrots, crackling ever! Highly recommend. We was on holiday and came across this place food was amazing! Service a little slow but couldn’t fault the food!

A really cozy pub, low ceilings and very traditional. Great menu and always busy at meal times, best booking well in advance. Open all day and an outside option if the weather permits. Plenty of parking and a small play area for kids. I've been on many occasions and not been let down yet.

You don't get a much better carvery in Dorchester than The Sun Inn. Fantastic tasting food with a great selection of drinks. Prices are creeping up but that's to be expected.

First time at the Sun Inn and would definitely go back. Lovely traditional pub with plenty of parking. Enjoyed a drink in the sun before being shown to our table. We ordered the carvery which was hot, fresh and delicious. One vegan nut roast ordered and additional vegetables adapted without butter to suit this dietary requirement. Still looking for somewhere that does Vegan Yorkshire puddings! Perhaps The Sun Inn will be the first!?

Weirdest nachos I've ever had.. looked like/tasted like plain pastry cut into triangles... toppings were lovely,Mozzarella, Minced Beef chilli, Salsa, guacamole, sour cream & jalapeños all good..we also had the Baked Camembert wich was absolutely delicious but could have come with a bit more of the lovely garlic bread on the board as there was plenty of cheese left after the bread had run out and we were spreading it on quite generously..

Amazing food- we popped in at lunch time, at first we were really superised with how busy it was being a lunchtime and it being off the beaten track. After we dug in the lunchtime carvery we soon realised why there food was amazing. Not to mention the service- not sure the name of the gent who was running the floor but he was all over everything! Will definitely be returning.

I have visited the Sun Inn on several occasions, every time for one of their legendary carveries. The quality of the food is exceptional for a carvery. The vegetables have small-batch taste to them. The roast potatoes are crispy flavoursome. There is a good choice of side vegetables. I particularly like to see roasted beetroot on the menu. I had the nut roast and my company had roast beef. The Sun Inn is well recommended.

We had a delicious lunch here. There is a very good menu with a variety of excellent offerings. Staff are excellent and very well organised. The food is hot and promptly delivered. We would certainly go again

First visit to the sun inn today .we were shown to a table by polite and friendly staff .very pleased to find out there was a carvery on offer every day of the week which is very rare in a pub nowadays .we chose the carvery with 2 meats available which were turkey and beef both delicious .the wide choice of vegetables was superb and delicious too.staff were curteous.we will definitely visit again when we are in Dorchester .

Cancelled booking! You need a proper booking sysytem! Telephoned 8 weeks ago to make a booking on a sunday for 5 people. Telephoned the day before to check and confirm but was told no booking way made! A complete lie and left a very bitter taste.

Friday lunchtime visit. Service was excellent and the carvery was first class. Well deserving of 5 stars and fabulous in every department……..

Another visit to this local pub the service was excellent and it was well worth the wait for the kitchen to open at 1730. We found this little place last time we was here for business and iit is now our go to place. It is well liked by the locals and it is advisable to book due to being so popular.

Went out for a family birthday tea as we fancied a carvery. The chap that greeted us, assuming he's the manager was pretty rude at the start of the evening and continued to be just as obnoxious as the evening went on. Carvery was o.k, but 1 member of our group didn't want that and the normal menu was extremely limited. The 2 girls serving, and the guy doing the carvery were all nice and polite as you'd expect. Had many a weekend carvery and special occasion here, but sadly will now be going elsewhere from now on.

A fabulous pub with a relaxing, pleasant atmosphere. There is plenty of seating, inside and out. Carvery was plentiful and wonderful selection of Vegetables etc. The service was excellent, all staff were very attentive, helpful and friendly. I would highly recommend this eatery.

It comes across that they don't like you turning up on a motor bike!. Can't say much about the over-salted food, vegetarian option was questionable as they seem to over salt it which is disgusting.

Thank you for finding us a table on Easter Sunday rven though we had not booked. All staff were kind , polite and helpful. The carvery was first class with plenty of choice of meat and vegetables.

Myself and two friends went here on a Monday for lunch - they had a carvery! Genuinely the best roast I have ever had! Staff were really friendly and attentive. My dog was very welcomed and the actual pub was very nicely decorated (traditional pub with fire place). Really good vegetarian and gluten free options. Just a really enjoyable experience. We will be going back. 😊

Sunday roasts are absolutely delicious! Excellent choice of sides and always 2 choices of meat (or just have both). I cannot comment on the beef as i don't tend to have it, but everything else is without reproach.

Went in there today. A random Tuesday afternoon and we just found out they do carvery every day. "Get in! 🤤" You need to try this place for carvery! I don't know much about British carvery and I'm sure others probably had better elsewhere, but I have lived in UK for 12 years now and this one was by far the best I ever had. It really is good. Nothing was bland. Every tray had flavour and no veg were left just plain boiled like many places do. There was garlic, rosemary, some sweetnes, butter, cracked black pepper, the goodness. All seems pretty basic stuff but you'll be surprised to know how many restaurants just don't even bother. Goes without saying the meat was tender and gravy just right. (For me) Staff were friendly and very cosy in there too. Give this place a try and if you're local, you're very lucky and you should support businesses like this. Thank you, The Sun Inn.

It was a wet miserable day when we visited but what a warm welcome! We were 4 adults and twin 10 month old children. Our table was just right (not in anyone's way) and the high chairs fitted right up to the table. All the adults had the delicious carvery and there was plenty of it, served by a lovely polite chef. The wait staff were pleasant and attentive and my granddaughter took quite a shine to the landlord and kept waving at him, he returned the waves each time despite being busy! I would suggest arriving as we did at 12 ish, as it got very busy. Altogether a very pleasant and enjoyable experience....we will be back!

We took a chance and booked for Sunday evening 4 carveries and 1 from the main menu. Excellent from being met at the door and directed to seats all the way through to when we left. Very well run with staff timing it so that everyone had their meals at the same time. The restaurant was very busy. Food was excellent definitely well worth visiting.
