Lovely afternoon in the bar, both had fish and chips, great service and nice food. We will be returning for sure. This is also a hotel with onsite parking in the town centre.

Very charming hotel stay, amalgamating the old and the new. Spacious and clean rooms, courteous and smiling staff made our stay memorable. We tried food and beverage in bar and the restaurant and it was excellent. Their scones served in the afternoon tea were very fresh and one of the best we had. Will def be back if we are around here next.

My visit was for a dining experience and I did not use the hotel facilities. The quality of food probably justifies the cost. Unless you are flush with money or robbed a bank, I'd probably save this dining experience for a special occasion. Not to say it's full of posh and pompous clientele, because it isn't, but you sure can wrack up a bill. I've been a few times and enjoyed it. Sometimes, they have a 2 for 1 offer on cocktails in their traditional lounge bar. I noticed the bar itself is unusually high, and the shorter patron will need to wave their hands above their heads to get the attention of the bar staff.

Spent New Year's Eve at the Kings arms. The room was clean and welcoming, the staff were fantastic - really looked after us. The food was excellent for our evening meal and breakfast. The ambiance was great. The hotel looked Christmassy and the fires in every room downstairs are very welcoming.

Wow! We were lucky to get a cancellation for New Years Eve & had the most amazing, friendly service. Food was fantastic. Atmosphere was great. I must say….I’ve been fortunate to have stayed at top London hotels for New Year’s Eve but this was well worth a visit. My husband & I stayed in the hotel in the spring time & was also great but last minute for NYE was a given gift. Thank you to Kelly, Josh…the manager Ned to all the staff. A Happy New Year to you all. You all deserve it.

Booked a two night stay in early December to meet up with friends. Nice room, the staff were friendly and the food was good, especially the scrambled eggs at breakfast! I have stayed here several times over many years, so it was great to revisit now that the hotel has re-opened after some years of closure. Very nice to see that a lot of old features have been retained, especially the spectacular tiled floor in the reception/entrance area.

We stayed in one of the epic rooms and it was absolutely stunning. Everything from the beautiful decor, roll top bath and classic fm on the wireless on arrival - just perfect! The meal in the restaurant was delicious and one of the best things was the incredible service all round - the waiting staff were lovely and the service from the lady on reception was second to none (wish we had got her name!). She kindly showed us the upstairs function room and gave me even more facts about Thomas hardy (and there’s not a lot I don’t know!) - and we bought some lovely bakery items from her this morning! Service and stay second to none! We will be back! Thank you to all - Melissa and Royce Benson

A busy place for a meal. Four of us went for a Sunday late lunch. The food was good, service was good although somewhat slow but then we weren't in a hurry. The initial bill was high because several items from another table had been added on (and then corrected).

If you are looking for a change from the usual humdrum Prem Inn Travelodge that seem to be taking over most town centres then this exquisette steeped in history creaky floored no room the same Hotel is for you. Refurbished to an excellent standard whilst retaining the period features. Staff were very friendly and helpful from the 2 receptionists we met to the lady running the restaurant to the bar person to the excellent chef we really couldn't fault it. Our evening meal in the restaurant was delicious and breakfast the next morning cooked to order much nicer than buffet style hot foods from above mentioned hotels. Thank you to all the staff we met who couldn't do enough for us and really topped off an excellent stay.

This is a lovely venue, very atmospheric, with beautiful decor. I booked a table online to eat in the bar. On arrival we went to the bar and the girl said we were in the restaurant and to go and notify the woman at reception. We did and were told no you're in the bar, which made more sense as that is what I had booked. We sat at our table, after 20 mins waiting for our food order to be taken, I went back to the bar to ask if we had to order our food at the bar and was advised no, they would come to us! Food order was taken, two roast dinners. After 25 mins, seeing others getting their meals and desserts we asked if our order was going to be long. Meal eventually arrived and it was faultless, absolutely excellent. We again had to go back to the bar 30 mins after finishing our meal to ask for the bill. It wasn't especially busy and there were plenty of staff working, just disorganised. The bill arrived and a 10% service charge had been added, we asked for it to be removed. I always tip if the service is good but this was far from good. Unfortunately the staff really let this place down.

Having eaten here several times since it opened, today will be the last time we give it a chance. We've had one lor two meals here that were not too bad. But far too many undepar meals in total. Today's being unacceptable. The manager however was very gracious in her response, appologetic and a full refund provided. Thank you. To note the bar staff, are also very friendly. Today we ordered 4 dishes, the first two to come out were battered squid with romesco sauce, the second, chicken scrumpet. Neither are complicated to get right. The squid hadn't had the membrane removed, so upon eating we were battling with the membrane which was like a long thin elastic band, which was inedible. The batter, unseasoned and flavourless. We couldn't eat it. The chicken scrumpet, upon cutting it in half to share with my husband, was and I'll go as far to say "disgusting". Half of the croquette filled with gelatinous and unrendered chicken skin with the remaining tiny bits of chicken meat in an uncooked flour based sauce (roux). Slimey, runny, no meat in it. Literally made my stomach turn. Couldn't even begin to eat it. We took it all back to the bar to show them. There was no argument as they could see the whole thing was unacceptable. Needless to say we didn't want to stay for the other two dishes. We will not be returning anytime soon. A wholly dissapointing experience.

I dont leave many reviews for things; but have been meaning to write this one for a while. Came for a Sunday roast a few weeks ago and can honestly say it was one of the nicest roasts I've ever had. We chose the Kings Arms after previously visiting a sister hotel in Shaftesbury and very much enjoying our meal there. The service was excellent, with attentive but not overbearing staff, the food is delicious and the portion sizes were great. The prices arent cheap, but i felt that i got an experience that justified the price charged. Would thoroughly recommend.

Quite a few good features but overall disappointing. The hotel is very well placed in the centre of the town with a surprisingly good car park, a nice terrace when the sun shines, and friendly helpful staff. The museum next door is a little expensive but very nice and worth the entrance price. We had a Plush room for 3 nights at £220 per night. The room was quite large, well appointed, quiet, but rather dark as the large windows looked closely out on an industrial building - it needed the supplied portable fan as it was too hot at night even in the coolish weather. The bathroom was really good with a separate bath and shower and space. We had one dinner in the hotel which was adequate but really only at a fair pub level with plenty of space in the large dining/breakfast room. Our other 2 dinners were at Dragonfly (excellent) and Cope (usual quality) - both only a 10 minute walk away. Breakfast was the real problematic issue for me. If you like a cooked breakfast every day then there are lots of choices on an a la carte menu (avoid the toast as it is thick bread with extremely solid edges). However one day is enough and alternatives are minimal. The biggest surprise was a breakfast bar buffet without any bread rolls or other bread - the first ever for me. My recommendation to the hotel would be to recommission the island in the centre of the restaurant to provide rolls/bread , butter, jams, marmalades and a toasting facility. I have to agree with other recent reviews that this is really a pub with rooms, that there some trivial but annoying issues in the restaurant with the provision of knives and the tables while perfectly clean still showed marks from previous meals.

Very very disappointing I expected so much better very dark and not clean the tables in the dining room were wiped down but the edges of the tables dirty seats covered in crumbs needed a really good deep clean. At breakfast there were no side plates on the table just paper napkin and and one knife and fork I don’t want to spread butter and marmalade with the same knife as eating egg and bacon the staff were happy to get more but we had to ask for everything.I really felt the at £280 per night things should have been very different very over priced it really is a pub with rooms rather than a high class hotel.Even the outside area patio the tables needed cleaning and the floor swept it was always so full of non residence in the bar etc so busy the staff were so over worked.I felt the reviews were very misleading also the pictures of the hotel.Cost a lot of money to stay at a very inferior hotel.

In was very disappointed in this hotel. It advertises as a hotel and the photographs do not depict the true picture. This hotel is a bar and resteraunt open to the public that has rooms. I accept that it is an old building but rather than having charm it is dark and very dingy along some corridors and quite frankly is not as clean as it should be. The lift between floors was exceptionally dirty and the dining room lacked attention to the cleanliness of the tables and seating between diners. The food was of good quality but the lack of attention to laying up of tables with correct amount of cutlery and plates was staggering . There were never any side plates and no second knife at breakfast to spread preserves onto toast, and there was nothing to put preserves in on the self help table. At dinner unless asked for, there was no fork given with a spoon to eat desert. The actual menu was very limited. There were some lovely people serving in the hotel but the whole place lacked proper management to lift it to the level it pertained to be. Very disappointing for the price paid.

The Kings Arms appears to be a good venue to stay for a couple of days of sightseeing in the County. The web site presents it as an old but beautifully refurbished Hotel with prices to match. We paid £180 per night. The room was dowdy and the description "Gorgeous Bathroom" was far from our perception. The food service was massively slow, breakfast and the single dinner we tried there. The staff were doing their best and they were nice young people. They have been seriously let down by the management who have not installed decent processes to help them succeed, not have they made the necessary investments in the refurbishment of a nice building

This is a hotel with attractive pub like character but great rooms with attention to detail (good quality coffee and tea making and fresh milk). It is an historic building so not everything is pristine but the rooms are clean and generally well maintained. Well located in the centre of Dorchester with an adjacent free car park for hotel residents. Continental breakfast was good in terms of quality and value. Did not try the cooked breakfast which was priced on an individual plate basis. Food in restaurant was ok; pub like in quality. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Good value.

We came for dinner on a Sunday evening whilst staying in Dorchester for a night. We chose this restaurant based on reviews and the fact that they serve roasts until the evening, and were not disappointed. The hotel is nicely decorated in the public areas and is elegant yet relaxed. We enjoyed a drink in the bar first, where we noticed dogs were welcomed. Many of the guests appeared to be locals. The roasts certainly lived up to the reviews - we had beef and the vegetarian option (vegan also available) and both were delicious with a good selection of vegetables. Service was attentive and friendly throughout. We would definitely return if we stay in Dorchester again, and would recommend the roast meals to anyone.

Hard to judge general menu as I ate vegan roast. It was absolutely the worst ever, it looked and tasted disgusting I will never return. It makes me so cross to eat vegan food out because I can do much better at home so if a chef can’t knock up a decent vegan dinner then they shouldn’t be working as a chef. I was actually temped the following Sunday to take down a roast I made and show him how it’s done. Like I said I can’t give an opinion on the rest of menu as I didn’t eat it but my friends said it was ok but they’ve had better.

There’s no doubt that this is a beautiful hotel but, we went with friends for Dinner and the staff were friendly and promptly took our order but when the meals arrived, my husband ordered the brisket, but it was too fatty and still had two pieces of string attached and the mashed potato was bland and quite sloppy, so he went hungry as he’s not one for complaining. A great experience. Lovely surroundings, extremely polite service, piping hot food and prices exactly matching the meal. And what a meal! Our family contains an omnivore, two pescatarians, and two vegans including one gluten-free, so we're hard to please. And the King's Arms served up the very best for all of us. Stunning soups (butternut squash & coconut), succulent burger, tasty Devon crab, stunning cider-battered haddock, chips to die for (incredibly crispy and melting in the middle) - and a vegan option that was one of the best I've ever known (merguez roasted squash, smoky aubergine, yoghurt, crispy polenta, zhoug and beetroot ketchup). Even the side of sliced bread was lovely. We all walked out extremely happy.

Empty bar, yet had to get the three servers attention to serve us whilst chatting between themselves! We went for Sunday lunch and it was a-maz-ing. The staff were attentive and present without it feeling like they were on top of us. The food was great, we both had the beef roast. It all tasted so good that we took our time savouring every mouthful, which then led to our food getting a little cool, but that fault is with us for taking soooo long not the restaurant. The yorkshire was quite possibly one of the biggest I have seen and had a flavour you don't often come across, more likely than not due to the fat or other ingredient they've used, I wish I had asked for their secret! I will say that this is not your average Sunday roast, this is a Sunday roast elevated. There weren't any children when we went and to be honest I don't know if the menu and atmosphere would suit a family with children any younger than mid teenagers. I wish we lived in the region so that we could make this place a regular and if we are in the area again we will certainly be booking a table.

Apart from a poor Sunday roast, the food was good. Staff were all particularly friendly and helpful. Room OK though not particularly well designed, but to be expected for an old period building. A pleasant experience right in the centre of Dorchester.

We stayed the night in one of the newly updated rooms: comfortable bed, bathroom well-appointed, nicely appointed coffee and tea. We didn't do dinner in the hotel, as we wanted to go into the town, and we couldn't have done justice to a £15 breakfast....

My husband and I stayed for two nights at the New Inn as friends are moving into the area. The pub was very pleasant with an open fire and separate eating area that was warm and inviting, as was the landlady Andrea who really couldn't do enough for us and said, on more than one occasion, that nothing is too much trouble. The accommodation was superb. A large comfortable bed. A warm, quiet room and drinking water and biscuits were available along with the usual tea and coffee in our room. The breakfasts were delicious. Plate wasn't overloaded but every ingredient was well sourced and cooked to perfection. Cereals, juices, tea and proper coffee available too, along with a loaf of toast. Ha! Ha! We stayed for an evening meal on the Friday night with our friends. The food was VERY good and much of it was home cooked where possible. Home made pie and the home made chips were cooked to perfection. So Andrea thank you so much for your warm welcome and hospitality and we look forward to seeing you again whenever we visit. Best regards A&P

My wife and I dined today for afternoon tea and we had the best time. The food was amazing and plenty of it, nice warm scones and sausage rolls along with the delicious sandwiches and desserts. The train carridge’s are so cosy and very nicely decorated. The atmosphere was perfect for a cold winters day with the fire going and the ambient lights,it just felt magical. The staff were really good and explained what was in the sandwiches and types of cakes laid out. I would recommend and we will definitely go back.
