Outstanding food, really friendly staff, cozy and nice atmosphere with a Woodburning fire. One of the best steak and ale pies I’ve had!

We only wanted a morning coffee stop before continuing our walk but it was expensive and with poor service. £4.50 for a cup, albeit a good coffee, with no suggestion that they might serve us - it was a sunny day and we wanted to sit outside.

Fabulous Sunday Roast. I've eaten in The Sun before and enjoyed many a pint of ale here also, but I never knew how good their Sunday Roasts were until last week. Outstanding soft and tender roast beef with a good gravy and plenty of different types of veg. The staff are great here, very friendly and happy to help. Fine dining and fancy dining rooms it is not, but you're in the Lakes, not Mayfair.

Excellent food and beer - which is what we came for. The Sun is a ‘spit and sawdust’ type pub, with slate flag floors, loads of beer choices and low beamed ceilings. Just the type of place we love. The staff are brilliant, relaxed and friendly. We came in as we were staying at the Coniston Hotel which was lacking in any atmosphere and they’d completely run out of hand pulled ales. We were not disappointed- beautiful meal, friendly welcome and locals having a laugh and a beer. Happy days!

Oh my goodness. We were all so very pleasantly surprised by the great food. I had the fish pie and husband and adult son enjoyed the Green Curry. It was ALL delicious, graciously served. Generally a very friendly pub, locally owned and locally patronized. It sets itself apart from brewery owned pubs in every detail! The owners were there chatting with the guests in this beautiful authentic 17th century establishment. We will return again and again and encourage others to do the same!! Just leave us a seat.

Last time I visited I thought the food was good and the ale was poor and service average. Now well I went last night I had the fish and chips, well it certainly wasn't worth the cost , chips were mank, fish decent size and quality but encased in an horrible batter. The ale was about drinkable but lack of variety and at 5 quid a pint a rip off but par for the course in Coniston . As to the pub itself its definitely in need of a bit of TLC. Frankly I was less than impressed.

What an absolute gem of a pub!! A true old style eatery, with real soul. Excellent choice of food and value for money. On one visit we tried the Sunday roast..gorgeous...perfectly cooked vegetables and meats. The BEST roast dinner we ve ever eaten out!! We were going to try another pub nearby but seeing the food being served and the uninspiring choice we walked along the disused railway track to The Sun and had the most delicious hogget burgers..local herdwick lamb topped with goats cheese, homemade coleslaw and perfectly cooked chips. Both times, we also got a doggy dinner for our dog which to us, looked good enough to eat!! Roast meat, potatoes and veg with gravy!! Lucky pooch. Friendly locals and lovely helpful staff . Has to be the best pub and pub food in Coniston

Ordered a drink (had to queue at the bar, not table service which I’m sure is not compliant with current covid guidelines) and guy (wearing exempt lanyard) was quite obviously annoyed I was paying by card. Rude. Didn’t bother getting more drinks (was going to order more once my husband had met us) or food. Went elsewhere. No need for rudeness.

The food is below average. Very poor! The burger was one of the worst I've had. The burger was tasteless and the bun was harder than stone. The Halloumi salad was deep fried? Which made no sense! Looked like chicken nuggets, tasted like rubbish! The chips weren't cooked properly either, chips? Really? Oh I'm and pretty sure the coleslaw was made in 2006Really poor effort. Really poor.

Written in a time of COVID. I don't like writing negative reviews but ... I've been going to Coniston, & drinking in the Sun, for more years than I care to remember and the Sun has always been a 'fair' place to drink & socialise. Because of COVID I'd been absent but I managed to make two short visits in late September & October. In September I found the Sun 'acceptable' but the October one was poor.I visited the Sun on two occasions in October. The first night was OK, but COVID regs were not being adhered to - any attempts at Social Distancing seemed to be down to the customers. Tables were not being cleaned. On the second night - well, again tables were not being cleaned, and one 'local' seemed to think is was perfectly in order to wander around talking to people and, possibly, spreading 'bugs'. One table was occupied by a 'private party' of locals and staff, Every word they said could be heard from a distance away and contained obscenities. (If I'd gone into my 'local' and behaved like that I would have been asked to leave). I'm not sure if food was on that night - there was gleeful talk about some-one being sacked that morning. (I could say a lot more but I'd rather not).In the end I drank up & walked out.The Sun used to be 'the place' to go for company and beer but it is a shadow of its former self. The one redeeming feature ... the cask ales were in 'fair' condition, and they do have a reasonable range ... BUT I WOULD CAUTION AGAINST USING THE SUN

We had a Sunday roast here which was absolutely delicious. Two of us had the beef and two had chicken. My Aunt can't eat large amounts as she's had a stomach op, so they did her a child's portion. The beef was tender, three big slices. Half a chicken on the other roast. All came with large home made yorkies, mash, herb roasties, kale, carrots, red cabbage, mange tout, roast parsnips and gravy. Service and hospitality excellent. We would highly recommend. Thank you.

Waited over an hour and 30 minutes for a sandwich and a bowl of chips. The people in front of me got theirs in 10 minutes. But they got two sandwiches instead of a toasted sandwich and one ordinary! At least five couples who ordered after me got theirs. So. I busied myself on my phone. In the end I asked one of the waitresses where my food was. 20 minutes later she put cutlery on the table and said ' A lot of checks went in at the same time. So delays happen sometimes' 1: Bad attitude.2. Lies. Only 2 'people were ordering food when I ordered. Another 15 minutes. No food. I went in and asked for a refund because of the rubbish service. The two members of staff, who I don't have problem with as they were attentive at the start (even though there had been confusion with previous orders) and were polite and apologetic but blamed someone called Sharon. They have problems with communication and how the kitchen runs. I recently had a meal at the pub with my son. The food was ok but the man behind the bar, which I assume was the landlord, was rude and extremely unwelcoming. When I paid for my food I was charged full price so I politely asked if they were part of the eat out to help out scheme and the reply was “ yes but you should have said earlier, we are not mind readers, he then huffed and puffed and amended the amount. Surely if he had signed up to the scheme he should have offered this automatically without me having to ask. We visit coniston regularly but I would not visit here again.

Saw this pub in the good pub guide so had to visit while in coniston. The selection of ales is superb, and all local. Lovely views across the hills and the village. Ordered the cheese burger and ribs. The burger was excellent although the hash brown was a bit much. The ribs though tasty were overcooked. Chips and fries were excellent. It is pricey but understandable where they are plus only saw 1 other pub in the village.

Called in here on a rainy day hoping for a nice lunch and drinks. We sat in the conservatory as it all seemed well spaced out (Covid considerations) but unfortunately nothing else was as good. Considering they had been closed for 4+ months I would have expected the place to have been cleaned during that time. The seat cushions were filthy, I took mine off it was that bad, there were thick cobwebs on the windowsills and at the back of some trinkets that were on the sill. The whole place looked shabby and in need of tidying up. We ordered a tuna sandwich, what a rip off at nearly £7, it was just two slices of bread cut in half and a handful of leaves and no napkins. The sort of thing you’d get at a truck stop. It really doesn’t take much to make a sandwich look attractive, cutting it in triangles adding a bit of coleslaw and crisps all help and at that price is expected. We could also hear a man and woman in the kitchen having an argument which didn’t help the atmosphere. We didn’t bother staying for a second drink and wouldn’t go back again.

AVOID THIS PLACE. We arrived here for a few drinks and some food after a whole day of hiking so we were absolutely starving. There were 11 of us so a large group and we split ourselves across two tables. We went up, individually or in couples to order and we were met with the manager saying 'Are you all ordering to that table?' we said yes and were met with a huge sign and was like fine but you won't be getting all the food at the same time there is too many of you. We said that's fine we just wanted to eat. We brushed it off as we were so hungry. Food started to arrive, a lot of it was under cooked, obviously microwaved and just pretty awful- however we didn't complain we were too hungry. Two of us ordered steak and one of them came out with no mushrooms so our friend politely asked for the mushrooms to be added. The waitress again sighed and went in to ask to chef about the mushrooms. We heard the chef shout very aggressively saying there were definitely mushrooms on this plate, however it was obvious there wasn't they then refused to give us anymore. WHAT WAS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE, was another one of our friends was a vegetarian. She ordered the Sunday dinner however didn't want to be awkward, so said ill have the chicken on the side and no beef gravy. The plate arrived with the chicken on the plate and also the beef gravy all over. She politely said she was a vegetarian and couldn't eat it and if they could remake it that would be great. The waitress went back in and brought out 2 extra people including the manager. They said this is what she ordered and that she would have to eat it and they wouldn't make her another. She obviously replied saying she couldn't and would like them to remake it. Again we heard the chef shouting saying this is what she ordered. They took the plate back in and came back with the ticket with it clearly written on it chicken on side and no gravy, they didn't apologise and stormed back in to make another one. It came out an hour later, with no gravy but with the chicken still on the plate. She took this off and ate it. Absolutely awful and rude service and we will never ever be back.

We had read terrible reviews of this place but were forced to give it go when we couldn't get a table elsewhere. I was pleasantly surprised when we walked in to find a cosy old room with lovely fire burning and original features. Unfortunately there was no room for us there so we were forced to sit right out the back in a new extension. Lovely views despite the rain! Service was poor - like lots of the pubs in Coniston, you have to order at the bar, you get plastic sachets of condiments thrust at you and your bottle of wine plonked down (unopened and with no ice bucket). Were asked to leave a card behind the bar for a tab or pay up front. Surely a security nightmare? Also stopped us wanting to order anything else. Not that we would have, the food was bog standard cash and carry style frozen and microwaved. At least it came quickly and I must admit the sweet potato fries were tasty. Burgers were poor quality meat and burnt. Mushy peas looked like a pot of snot/bogeys. Revolting. Certainly wouldn't recommend.

Visited on recommendations but wish we hadn't. At first we thought it was a quaint lakeland pub but then realised it was actually quite tatty. The food menu was very limited and missing some of the normal Lakes classics. We both ordered burgers which came with a cheap looking white bun, skinny fries (i.e frozen), a bit of limp salad and the the burger itself was dry and not particularly tasty - certainly not worth the money (much better at the Black Bull, the Yewdale or Wilson Arms). Poor customer service - I'm approaching the end of my meal, with knife and fork still in hand, and waitress comes over to abruptly ask if we have finished our meals yet! I have read reviews saying that staff have been unfriendly, but everytime (maybe twice - three times a year) we have been, the craic had been great and staff wonderful. Yes, beer is more expensive than our hometown Preston... We have wonderful memories of the Sun Hotel and it is our choice of Lakeland Inn when visiting the Coniston area. The elevated position up on the Walna Scar Road is ideal for when you finish a lovely day on Dow Crag, the Old Man and Wetherlam. Good choice of real ale and whiskies ... and the bar meals are canny as well. The bar area has traditional character with wooden columns and beams. Border Terriers and other well-behaved dogs are more than welcome. One of the top bars in the Lake District.

Great pub with nice atmosphere, seemed to be favoured by locals. There was a good choice of local ales and food was available.

We enjoyed our late lunch visit to the Sun with our American friends. A fine range of real ales, proper gammon and chips, huge, and perfectly battered fish, chips and (naturally) mushy peas and the kids pronounced the chicken nuggets and fries excellent. Lots of space, a terrace with views of the fells, quirky interior and friendly barman. What more could you want after a walk in the hills or an hour or two at your favourite lakeside beach?

Perfect after a day on the fells around the Old Man of Coniston, you can relax with one of a decent choice of well-kept beer on the terrace or in the garden.

visited the sun hotel for the weekend for a short getaway. rooms were lovely and clean and ours had a spectacular view. breakfast was very good out in the beer garden. pub food in the evening needs work as its not the best. we ate out the second night of our stay because of this. quaint old bar with plenty of character and a good range of beers. we will go back but will avoid the pub grub in the evening.

We visited The Sun on 4/7, initially we called in to look at the menu and make a dinner reservation. The barmaid told us to move to another area of the bar if we wanted a drink--which was occupied by locals sitting on stools at the bar. I told her I just wanted to reserve a table for 2 people and was told you can only reserve for 8 or more . She was unhelpful but a kind chap (customer!!) told us we'd get in no problem and just to order food at the bar. We returned later and went to 'ordering point' at the bar where we had to squeeze into a space between the 4 locals who continued to shout over our heads as we tried to order. We asked if we could have a tab but were told only if we left a card behind the bar--other pubs in Coniston have no problem giving you a tab so we paid cash. I leave my cards with no-one!! I returned to order food and again had to shout my order over the gossiping locals luckily I can be noisy too. My husband returned to the bar to order drinks and told the barmaid to move away from the locals so that he didn't have to shout. The food was great when it arrived and the chefs clearly know what they are doing. The landlord was sitting in the bar area watching people shouting to order food and did nothing, he clearly does not care about the place and does not understand customer service. So chefs find a new pub to work in you'll get no repeat custom with this landlord and landlord sell the hotel if you don't like being there.

Whilst visiting our favourite haunt in the Lake District -Coniston- we decided on an evening meal at the Sun. This place is steeped in tradition inside and out because this was where the late Donald Campbell used to stay whilst preparing for his many water speed records on nearby Lake Coniston. Inside there are a few photographs of the attempts including his last fatal one in 1967. We decided to eat in their airy conservatory which gives a good high up view of the area. There is a very fair choice on the menu to go at and the beers and local ales are superb here. The lasagnes we had needed heating up a little more but were certainly tasty enough. Service was friendly as well. Nice choice of sweets to follow. Would we go back? - Of course. Recommended.

The choice of food on the evening menu was great, quite a good choice. When the food arrived it was very tasty. Although the public porch way could do with a deep clean!

Very disappointed, it was cold and beef was as tough as old boots. Things have really gone downhill since last year.

Come here occasionally when in the area. Not our go-to pub but it's pretty nice, there's a lovely open fireplace near the entrance if you're lucky to get a seat near it. There's also a few pool tables near the back. Not sure what it is but I don't get the feeling that I need to go back whenever I leave.

We were not terrible impressed with the looks of some of the other pub's and their menus in Coniston. We did enjoyed the atmosphere and the meat pie and fish and chips ( especially good ) in this pub. Not disappointed in the least with our choice to eat here. Probably would have stayed in the hotel if we had known about it before we booked somewhere else.

Black pudding and haggis fritters followed by the most tender and tasty lamb shanks for our lunch. The teen had the house burger with a slice of haggis, said it was one of the best he’d had. Very friendly service. Well worth it. Oh yes, and the selection of ales .... the best! Beautiful views. It’s an old English pub, dog and muddy boots friendly. A sunny conservatory to sit in if you don’t want to be in the pub itself.

Lovely pub with roaring fires. Great food after a long day out, with large portions. Prices as to be expected because of the location. Just needs some background music so it’s not silent when not busy.

Returned to Coniston again and will return in May. The Sun Hotel is always a port of call for both food and beer. Always good and very friendly staff. I can recommend the Loweswater Gold and encased Steak and Ale pie.

We travel about two hundred miles each year to run the Coniston 14 and afterwards twenty or so, plus many other runners, congregate at The Sun for a pint and some carbs. We asked for a bowl of chips and were told, in an overly gruff voice that we need a table number and chips can’t go outside.

Partner and I nipped in for a swift pint after walking up Old Man of Coniston. Traditional pub atmosphere inside with a nice fire too. However we sat outside as the sun was shining & there are plenty of seats - perfect. I always pop in here for my first ‘reward pint’ when returning from the walk, and will continue to do so! Couple of Liverpudlians were running the bar, friendly chaps.

Went for a meal at The Sun tonight Monday 19 March to initially be told they had no food and wouldn’t for a couple of days. This was changed to the Chef had 2 days off. This is a hotel and last year we were given exactly the same excuse. The sooner this establishment is sold the better - absolutely disgusting. Only gave one star as not possible to give none.

Had three dinners at the Sun Hotel during our stay in the Lakes District! Set on a quiet lane within a short walk from the heart of Coniston, the Sun Hotel offers good british pub fare with flair and originality. The menu is varied and the beer selection includes several regional selections. Friendly service too.

After a long days walking we were pleased to fall into a warm welcome and traditional pub. The staff were engaging and the menu was extensive. In fact it was very difficult to decide. We all have very different meals and all thoroughly enjoyed. The steak and ale pie was amazing and asked for extra gravy which was forthcoming with no problem. Cannot fault the meal at all. Would highly recommend and bst pub we visited in Coniston.

Used to be a little bit different, a little bit higher quality in ingredients and in beer offerings. Now it’s just the same downgrade Peroni to Nastro etc. Save a few pence but turns the product into the same as everywhere else instead of that small cut above. Such a shame.
