Pros: * very polite & friendly staff * good range of dishes on the menu * decent choice of well kept beer * reasonably priced * dog friendly Cons: * service could have been a little quicker but this wasn’t a huge problem. * you really need to book in advance, especially if you have a dog. We would go again if we’re in the area.

Really, the crumble was outstanding and has set a new benchmark for measuring crumble. This pup is what it is, it’s a watering hole for locals that also caters for the tourist trade. If you have a problem with people speaking their own language in their own environment, it’s not for you and perhaps you shouldn’t be holidaying in Northern Wales. If you’re dining, my recommendation is to choose from the specials menu, which I’m advised is all locally sourced produce. I had the scallops (delicious) and the lamb, followed by the crumble (if you hadn’t guessed), all were really enjoyable and not over priced. Wifey had her starter from the specials menu and then for mains, muscles from the regular menu. The starter, venison pate was good but I didn’t rate the mussels which come in a bland milky source and a side dish of chips which are pretty much like re-air fried chip shop chips. I tried two different beers and both were very well kept. The pub gets very lively later, mostly with a local contingent. All in all, it was a very enjoyable evening and not outlandishly priced. The service was mostly provided by a young Argentine lady who was absolutely delightful. Exceptionally better value than the Abersoch pubs, just couple of miles away. So yes, I’d recommend it and I’d definitely recommend the crumble, preceded by something from the specials menu. It’s definitely worth pre booking and in the tourist season, you might have to book a week or more in advance. Why only 4 stars? I’m always a tad critical a save my 5star reviews for exceptional business. I would give it 4 1/2 if that was an option.

Just enjoyed an excellent meal at The Sun. Really couldn’t fault it. Staff were so nice and very friendly. The food arrived quickly considering it was very very busy. The food is unpretentious pub food. No airs and graces just good honest meals. Prices were reasonable. Also felt very Covid safe. Will definitely return.

We booked a couple of hours before and went there as a family of 4. We found this place to be very clean, COVID aware and the food was excellent. The staff were very accommodating and polite throughout and the service was excellent. Would certainly recommend. Also dog friendly if you book to be in the bar area - but don’t worry the bar area is very nice.

Normally i like to give places a chance, especially with the current circumstances. We arrived at this premises 10 minutes before opening, bumped into what must have been the owner / manager outside who seemed very blunt an un-welcoming so were hesitant to go in anyway. We are a family of 8 who live in the same household (all living with mum and dad whilst we save for a house). We are aware of the rule of 6 and Normally split our family up into 2 groups when & if we go out anywhere for food. We are from Wiltshire which has had the lowest r rate throughout the whole pandemic because we actually listen, cover our faces, stay clean and stay 2 metres or more apart even if we are out as a family to make others feel more comfortable. We split up as we entered the premises. We were then told we shouldn’t even be going out whilst this very rude man placed the menus on our tables, shaking his head at us. We then could hear him out the back bad mouthing us as a family so we upped and left. Absolutely disgusting behaviour. Will never recommend. If you did not feel comfortable why did you not politely say I’m sorry but i don’t feel comfortable having 2 groups of 4 people from the same house sat separately in my pub?... you’re a public house - Surely we’d be a safer bet than 10 different households in your premises. I was so disgusted with this mans behaviour I had to write a review. Good luck to you, that’s all I can say. Attitude and behaviour like that gets you nowhere in life. BE KIND!!!!!

Don’t be deceived by the lunch menu on the website, it is normally more extensive when you turn up. I had steak and ale pie with mash and veg, followed by apple and blackberry crumble. What can I say, it was the best of both I had ever had (and trust me I have had a lot of these!) unable to fault anything. You could tell it was all made from scratch and the flavours were divine. We ate in the bar which was cosy and allowed dogs. We have been here whilst on holiday for the last 4 years combining with a walk at Hells Mouth. Wish we lived nearer it would definitely be our local.

We had dinner twice, and on both occasions we had great food including starters of crab bisque, chilli prawns and scallops in a great sauce. Mains included roast hake and roast lamb rump. The menu has enough choice to satisfy all tastesWe also attended the quiz night which was good and didn’t drag interminably like some quizzes do. I’d strongly recommend a visit

We went to The Sun the night of the World Cup Semi-Final between Belgium and France and were delighted to find it quite quiet! We've been there a few times in the past so we know that it's usually excellent and this time it was no exception! Walking in you immediately feel at home. The low ceilings, the black wooden beams, the myriad of drinks on offer, the friendly owner and his wife greeting every guest with a smile, the rustic local folk art dotting the walls, the maps of the area and the few little jewels of local history that truly makes a pub more than just a building that people drink and eat in but a true hub of the village. The food was also excellent. While pub grub classics like steak and ale pie, scampi and chips, gammon with egg and pineapple and fish and chips were up for grabs; The Sun also has several phenomenal gourmet options on the Special Menu that sets it apart and elevates it beyond your favourite local. I started with the arancini risotto balls filled with mozzarella in a tomato and caper sauce and it was genuinely spectacular. The Moules Marinière was very very good as well, shown by my auntie going up to the bar to get a spoon for the broth! For the main course I had the signature Sun Burger, a local beef burger with mozzarella, bacon, cajun chilli mayonnaise and fresh jalapeños, which was very tasty with enough spice to singe the tonsils but not have you rushing for a bucket of ice-cold water. My cousin had a T-Bone steak cooked medium-rare which he said was brilliant. My father and auntie went for the classic gammon steak and scampi respectively which were also very agreeable. Accentuated by mesmerisingly fast service, this was a highly enjoyable trip to our favourite gastropub in the hills above Abersoch. Brilliant food, good drink, comfy and welcoming surroundings and all for a fraction of the price you'd get for it in the village.

First visit for a few months, in which time, their French chef has departed, so interested to see the difference. I had a rib eye steak, requested to be cooked rare, but over cooked, chips were back to bog standard mediocre. Two others had fish and chips, the fish was apparently superb, but the chips a let down. The last member of our group had Macaroni cheese and was delighted ( except for the chips). We had three desserts, White chocolate & whisky bread & butter pudding was lacking in the two extra advertised ingredients, tasty but disappointing not to get what was promised. The other two desserts were excellent, limoncello & plum tart especially. Quite a satisfactory evening as the service was good.

This is a good little pub serving generally good quality food. We have called in here several times and always with our dog. Just to be sure we checked first that dogs are still allowed and were told that they are welcome in the front bar but not in the lounge/restaurant area to the rear. We were also told that it was in order to take the dog 'round' to the front bar which we took to mean passing through from the back door (car park entrance) to the front bar by way of the lounge. Unfortunately this was not the correct interpretation and as soon as we arrived in the front we were accosted by the landlord and told in no uncertain terms that we shouldn't have done that but should have gone round the outside by way of a singularly uninviting and dark passageway to the front door. This was done in front of all the customers in the area and was rather embarrassing and totally unnecessary. Given that last year we were actually allowed in the lounge with the dog it all seemed a bit OTT. The conversation then degenerated into a pantomime script,,,,'but last year you allowed us in the lounge'.... 'oh no I didn't'... oh yes you did'... and so on. Maybe last year the owner was off that day or maybe he just didn't want to lose the custom as the front bar was full...? Comedy finally over we did more or less enjoy the food though the edge was taken off and maybe we should have just walked out at such treatment. We note that rudeness to customers has been recorded a number of times by other reviewers. After this little debacle we will not be returning to this pub. So be very aware all dog owners - you will be publicly humiliated if you dare to misunderstand unclear directions by the outwardly jolly but inwardly rudelandlord.

We wanted to eat here on a Saturday evening and tried to pre-book a table, but we were told this was not possible. When we arrived we were welcomed and offered a table straight away, however, the table was a bit squeezed into a corner so when we saw some people moving from another table we asked to be moved which we were granted. We enjoyed pub fayre at slightly higher than normal pub prices. The specials looked really lovely, lot's of fresh fish, but they were so expensive we went for the old 'safe bets'. All in all a very enjoyable evening in a very busy and obviously well liked pub.

I've been going to this pub since I was well under the legal age for such matters and I turn up last weekend and - shock horror - someone's taken the food by the scruff of the kneck - and the rest. No more popty ping here but instead a guy from the Loire who clearly has a passion for good food and fish and seafood in particular. My scallops with garlic butter and chilli were excellent and the plaice was show-stopping. And I am pleased to report that the pub has not been subjected to the Farrow 'n Ball gastro makeover and still has the slightly shabby 1950's feel.

We regularly visit, bypassing closer places to eat as we've never had a bad meal here. Pub favourites with added locally sourced fresh seafood and some unusual additions on occasions, different for a country pub.Yes it gets very busy and, at these times, you may need to wait for a table as you generally can't book, however, if prepared for this, it's rarely a long wait and there's a good system in place to ensure people are catered for.I can thoroughly recommend the steak! We've always found John and Vivien to be very welcoming and all the staff too. We visited in late September on a Saturday and a Wednesday evening. The weather was great so we sat outside in the beer garden. The menu has a couple of vegetarian choices. The rest of the menu is locally sourced meat and fish and there is a lot of choice plus a specials board. On Saturday we had the special which was spinach lasagne and on the Wednesday we have the butternut squash and goats cheese lasagne. Both were fantastic. The welcome was warm and the service fantastic. They have some good real ales on and a surprisingly long wine list. This was a really good spot. I would imagine this place is very busy in high season. They are open for lunch and do coffee during the day.

The Sun Inn held great promise, but didn't really deliver. Went there with wife and kids - the kids had burger and fires that was fine. Wife an I had one of the specials - which was a spider crab salad. The crab was chopped in half, but otherwise unprepared / dressed. I have had crab and lobster many times and simply gave up after 10 minutes of fiddling with the thing. Impossible to get more than a morsel of crab meat off it. Wife also surrendered. Looked quite impressive, but simply not practical to eat a crab of this size (quite small) and with such thin legs and honeycomb type body structure.Would not rush back.

Have been before and had nice meal, but not the case this time. 3 of us had meals, one was ok , one was poor and very overpriced, and one came without some of the menu advertised ingredients. No sauces or mustard were brought to us when we were served the meal, so I had to search out the waitress, and when I asked for the missing advertised chutney was told with a big smiley face that they had run out. Wouldn't mind so much if it was a cheap pub meal, but this was expensive. If they had told us they didn't have the advertised accomplishment, we would have changed our order. Very poor staff training, and no apology for poor meal, which is a shame because previously have had a decent meal here.

We were staying locally for a short break and were looking to go out for an early afternoon meal.We rang before hand to check opening and serving times and were told that they were serving all day and they didn't take reservations. Not being familiar with the area (and not taking a map showing it's location) It took a little finding and also took ages to park.Once inside it was heaving - apparently a large part of 20 had just arrived. But we found a table with menus and went to order. On ordering we were greeted in a friendly manner but told that they should have stopped serving but would serve us - phew.Meals arrived quite quickly considering how busy it was.2 of us had the homemade stake and ale pie - what turned up wasn't what we expected (puff pastry on top of a bowl of filling) and unfortunately was also bland and chewy. One of us had their Ranger burger (excellent), another had the Vegetarian goats cheese lasagne (good). All of the staff were really friendly and helpful and the service we received was excellent - especially considering how busy they must have been.Lovely 'traditional' look and feel with lots of different seating options.

Anyway, good to see the management are continuing to alienate their clientele. Our family lunch there remains one of the least enjoyable meals of my life and, average food and miserable helpings aside, the atmosphere was so grim and unwelcoming as to be almost comical. We went on a family holiday to Abersoch a place where my boyfriend's family have been visiting for nearly 25 years. We hadn't had much luck with dining out as it is summer, busy and around that area it was difficult to book in. We rang the sun, asking to reserve a table and they said they didn't take bookings. Which was fine but to ensure we got a family meal out my boyfriends my mum and her partner went a little early to ensure we got a table. Which we did. We all arrived, we had a tab so went straight to the bar to grab a drink before we chose off the menu. The barmaid was rude and huffed and puffed as we ordered our drinks. We were then approached by the owner who was very rude and rushed us to order our food beforehand when we were waiting for the rest of our party as we went out to the garden for a quick cigarette our coats and menus were removed from the table. So after being rushed and talked to like we weren't customers rather than an annoyance we sat down to look at the menu. The specials board was being written at the time so we decided to wait for the specials board. Again we were rushed to order. We were told that we better order quick in better words. As he came with the special board we had chosen our meals and placed an order at the bar. Whilst my boyfriends mum brought the specials board back he said to her, 'hurry! Hurry! To the next table' rather rudely as well. Overall then the atmosphere of our meal was ruined and as we didn't want to make it worse we didn't complain. The food was average I had a burger great meat but everything else was mediocre. I would have probably had a better experience if there was a warmer welcome. But the owner was just plain rude. Highly dissatisfied customer.
