Crowded bar area, immediate impression was it was a local pub, for local people. However, the main seating area was upstairs, away from the bar. A pleasant area. The food was good, the steak pie, excellent. Could have suffered a few more vegetables though.

We've just had a meal at The Stone Inn and I wanted to drop a review. From the very warm welcome we received upon entering the very busy pub, to the fabulous service and excellent food - all outstanding. We hadn't booked but were made to feel comfortable and welcome. We were told there would be a table if we were willing to wait a short while. I'm pleased we did as the food was delicious; home made and hearty. I can recommend the steak pie (sourced from the local butchers). The pub is a traditional country pub, with an old range and spiral staircase upstairs. It was very comfortable. A very friendly place off the beaten track and very much worth a visit.

Superb! If you want a quiet, friendly pub with good food, this is it! None of your poncy I want to be a posh restaurant malarkey. Good honest food, good honest prices, great staff and atmosphere. Excellent. If only I lived closer!

Unfortunately we didn't eat,but had drinks. It was a good night. The atmosphere was brilliant as they had a group on ,in the bar was a little commotion with a customer who said words that weren't nice and the landlady put a stop to it very quickly, so we'll done

We stayed in a holiday cottage about 50m from The Stone Inn and we ate here on 2 nights. Although it’s a relatively small place, we were seated upstairs which was fine as we had our dog with us.The service was prompt and friendly. The food was better than expected tbh. We had the roast dinner on Sun and it was excellent.

We stayed the very friendly village of Hayton for a long weekend. This local pub was a delight and seemingly completely untouched unlike most pubs nowadays. A roaring fire, chatty locals and local beers was a winning combination. We had booked a Sunday evening meal for four adults and two children which was delicious. Food-envy was in full force. Highly recommend popping in if you're in the area.

Nice little pub. Shame about the kinder garden going here.Kids left unsupervised, screaming and running in and out of the toilets. Unless you want kids around screaming all afternoon late into the night, I'd give this place a wide birth!

Excellent meal, the steak pie in particular was exceptional. The fish & chips was more like whale and chips. Lovely dessert selection Dining room is small (6 or so tables) in a cute way. It's up narrow stairs so not suitable for wheelchairs, but there are tables downstairs, perhaps they might be able to accommodate if given advance notice. Limited parking, but definitely worth the effort. We will be back

We were lucky enough to have The Stone Inn literally on the doorstep of our holiday accommodation, and were delighted to have such a welcoming pub serving excellent home-cooked food at weekends. I had booked ahead of our stay for a meal for one night, but ended up eating two consecutive nights we enjoyed it so much. Dogs are welcome in the bar area, and booking is recommended as this lovely village pub is extremely popular. We were spoilt for choice from the menu, but particularly enjoyed the Chilli Beef Enchiladas, Chicken Enchilada Suiza and Steak Pie. If only we had been there another evening as I would have loved to try the Fish and Chips which seemed very popular with the locals. The service was excellent on two very busy evenings, not only were the staff attentive and accommodating to those dining in the pub, but also managed takeaways in what appeared to be a very swift and streamlined service.

Unlike some other restaurant takeaways we’ve had, the food was piping hot, good portion sizes and not overpriced! Excellent service and excellent food- i hope they will continue with takeaways long after this lockdown is over!

We rang on the Sunday and got a table for 6 that evening. The pub is a small intimate building with lots of character. The meals were all of excellent hone cooked values and my roast beef dinner was great value at £10. All our plates were empty which is always a good sign. The puddings were the star of the show - the pina Colada cheesecake and the sticky toffee pudding were fantastic. Highly recommended!

Picked the pub due to its reviews and to the fact it was fairly local to us, we arrived and as we waited in the bar area there was a group of men who had had a bit too much alcohol and where using some choice language, mainly every other word began with F, the landlady didn't seem bothered in the least by this but in a bar with children and couples in it not a great thing. Anyway we went up to the seating area up stairs and we where basically left to seat ourselves as the 2 girls who where waiting on seemed pre occupied with something else I know not what, when they took our order we had to wait an hour for some basic food(pie chips and peas) this place has the potential to be a great eatery but it is in a state of limbo, not sure whether it wants to be a pub for locals or an eatery, with a bit of thought and maybe a revamp it could probably do both but as it stands now we wont be going back as there are plenty of other pubs doing better food and service with a much better ambiance

We stayed at a delightful holiday cottage "Cherry Tree Cottage" in the village for 6 weeks . Booked 4 consecutive Saturday's in the upstairs restaurant for ourselves and family/friends. The service was superb, the food excellent, they changed the menu slightly each week so there was always a good selection and it was not silly money either. On a whim I bypassed the Lane End Inn sitting directly on the busy A69 and turned off on a short detour to visit the Stone Inn. It was an excellent decision as it transpired. My main course (fish) was far removed from the bland fare served up in some establishments as an option to red meat. It was moist, appetising and very tasty. My compliments to the chef. My coffee was served up somewhat tepid but that is by the bye, it was immediately replaced by a cheerful member of staff. The buildings, on the outside, are quaintly reminiscent of an old coaching inn which, at one time, I suppose it was. Within, the décor is tastefully 'period' without appearing contrived, harking back to the old fashioned inns of a bygone age.

Sunday lunch was decidedly average, sadly. Usual warm welcome and fine surrounds but the roast was over-priced, especially as it came with frozen roast spuds, frozen Yorkshires and virtually raw cabbage - for £16! Starter was clearly shop bought as were the desserts. My cheesecake was like chalk with a bit of crumpled meringue and frozen berries barely thawed. Tasteless. The profiteroles were shop-bought too. Cost for two plus drinks £70. No finesse. Could have had it at home for £20. Shame to report that we were disappointed as it’s a lovely spot for a pub and previous visits have been great.

The food is great. Service is friendly. The place looks good. So why 3 stars? It’s great if you can get booked. There is no online booking I can find. This time I phoned on Monday to book for Saturday. No answer - answer phone. I left all details but no one got back to me. Phoned Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and no one answered. No point in leaving message when it’s not answered. Not the first time this has happened. On several occasions I have got through there were functions on! Eventually you say “what’s the point?”
