We parked to the rear to go on a local walk with the hope of a pint afterwards. When we got back the landlord opened early for us (a group of 9) to have a well earned pint, pet the pub dog (Sonny) and play some darts! Really friendly, lovely welcoming atmosphere. Thank you!

Unfortunately we didn’t get to try the food and drink. When we walked in there was a man behind the bar he said nothing to us ! Disappearing for more than 6 mins, we stood looking at other customers, had he said I’ll be back in 5 or there’s a problem but nothing !! So we took our customer else where, we had a good drink in lovely surroundings in the Greenhill Hotel

After a long walk from Carlisle, and having passed no pubs we arrived at the pub and it was closed… but not for long. Having spotted our obvious distress, the landlord offered to open up for us. The family were friendly and welcoming, the drinks were welcome, and we probably stayed too long. Perfect

We found the publican very friendly opened early. Good selection of drinks and crisps. Pool & darts. Will return if in the area. As not many pubs in this area. So great to find a 5 star pub!

We stayed in Gilsland for 3 nights and called in here in the evenings for a couple of drinks. Don’t do food, but it’s what you’d call a ‘proper’ pub. Sport on tv, darts, pool, and just a nice welcoming atmosphere. Worth a visit.....

The Bridge Inn is in the centre of the small country town on Gilsland. Hadrian’s wall runs through the town. Unfortunately the Inn does not open until the evening but if you are staying in Gilsland then it is an excellent place for a beer after exploring the wall.

Don't expect to come here for a meal, this is a proper pub with music, pool, darts, Sky Sports and a place to meet the locals but it doesn't serve food. Staying nearby we found it really friendly and a good atmosphere, welcoming landlord a great place to relax after a long day's walking.

The service really marred the whole experience. My husband and I were gifted an afternoon tea for our anniversary. When we arrived, we were greeted at the front door by a lady who I can only describe as a 'bouncer' of sorts - she stood in front of us, making it clear we were not to venture any further into the building until we had proven we had a booking... I was also rather strangely escorted to the lavatory, rather then simply given directions ("to your left at the end of the corridor" seems rather easy to remember...). Perhaps I look like the type to get easily lost? I got a glass of fizz as a treat (we were celebrating after all!) but I never did get my pot of tea. I'd have brought it up, but we never saw the staff again. No one checked if everything was OK or if we needed anything else. We had to go looking for someone in order to pay the bill (for the glass of fizz). No one offered to take my coat, although I know other people in the room were awarded that level of service. I shared my husband's pot of tea - my tea cup was cracked and leaked - again, I'd have brought it up if a single member of staff had approached us. And there were plenty of staff about - we could hear them laughing and joking and chatting, outside of the dining room in the corridor. The scones and homemade jam were delicious. There was a bit too much chocolate in the fruit tarts for my liking, making them a little sickly. The pistachio cake was slightly dry. The cheese and pickle sandwiches were a tad disappointing, but the egg ones were very tasty. The dining room itself lacked any atmosphere. Beautiful surrounding area. Close enough to major roads. We love to dine out frequently - anywhere and everywhere! However, we won't be returning here. Nor will we be recommending to anyone else.

Crowded bar area, immediate impression was it was a local pub, for local people. However, the main seating area was upstairs, away from the bar. A pleasant area. The food was good, the steak pie, excellent. Could have suffered a few more vegetables though.
