The Belted Will Inn in Carlisle

Lovely overnight stay enroute from Scotland to the Midlands. Warm welcome, generous room and bathroom and table reserved for dinner in quaint restaurant. Excellent breakfast and evening meal menu, would recommend the Captains Seafood Platter. Would highly recommend.

I can't comment about the rooms as I have not stayed here. But as for the service and food, you would be hard pressed to find anything better. Excellent quality produce and the service of is top notch. You will always be greeted with a warm, friendly, and welcoming atmosphere.

Dad and I were made to feel so welcome at The Belted Will. Our bags were carried up to our room, lovely local beer, hot quick and home cooked dinners (fisherman’s catch for me, burger for dad) and comfy warm beds to collapse into, before the best full English breakfasts of our 5 day Hadrian’s Wall walking break. Thank you so much to everyone who helped deliver everything a country inn should be.

Stayed in a holiday cottage nearby and came here for drinks and to eat on two occasions. Very friendly welcome by staff and lively village pub. They have rooms and so it is best to book for the restaurant. Menu and daily specials - food not cheap but generous portions and good quality. Wine reasonable price and beer comparatively cheap compared with other parts of the country. Enjoyable meals and good service - would recommend

Lovely food very friendly staff good old fashioned pub

We spent a night here earlier in the year, in passing, and decided that we had to come back for another visit. It was great the first time, and equally great the second time. The Belted Will has a friendly country inn atmosphere, is very clean, has delicious food, and is in a handy location for touring the surrounding area. What more could you want?

A group of 10 of us stayed whilst walking Hadrian’s Wall. The owner and staff could not have been more welcoming and accommodating. The rooms were lovely, beds comfy and very well stocked with tea, coffee and biscuits. The evening meal was 5* with great service. Lots of options available for breakfast. We would recommend staying at this hotel for the rooms and amazing food.

Excellent stay rooms tidy staff amazing. Food was the best we have had in a pub for a long while. Even the locals in for a beer made us all welcome and chatted away.breakfast was the best and nothing to much trouble.we will definitely return

We stayed here for a night during a weekend away and really enjoyed it. The staff were friendly. The food was great. The place had that authentic country inn atmosphere, especially the public bar which was filled with locals in good spirits. The inn is well placed if you're keen to do some of the Hadrian's Wall walks. It's now on our list of places we would like to revisit.

We were looking for a country side stay & luckily we chose The belted will inn. Lovely location especially for Hadrian’s wall & Vindolanda Roman fort etc. Easy, polite check in. Rooms with all you need. Parking no problem. Great breakfast & evening meals also very good. The host’s are very nice & friendly. Very pleasant olde world type inn set in nice, quiet village setting. Easy access from M6 & good location for touring the area which is beautiful. Hope to return soon and would recommend to anyone.

Food was amazing, staff are really nice, oyr mid week visit was quiet and enjoyable.

My daughter had planned a trip to my birthplace in Cumbria for my birthday , and one of the places I chose to visit was Hallbankgate, where my grandmother had lived. We had a walk round this beautiful hamlet, and then called in The Belted Will for a drink. As soon as we walked in we received a warm welcome from a chap behind the bar, and he chatted to us about the area, as well as suggesting a delicious passion fruit gin, we both enjoyed this. A lady then came over and talked through some pictures on the wall of Hallbankgate in years gone by. This was a lovely, clean and cosy country pub with a fire that soon warmed us up as it was a very cold day. We noticed a food menu on display with a great selection of dishes too. Will definitely call in again on any subsequent visits.

The title says it all. I stayed one night at the Belted Will during a Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle tour. The staff were very friendly and attentive to our needs (party of 12), and the bar was full of friendly folks, too. The food was excellent, and the rooms were decent (friendly tip, though: larger pillows would make it more comfortable to sleep). Would absolutely definitely stay there again if I was in the area.

Ignore the strange name, the stay was among the best my wife and I have ever had! Alovely room, with excellent T&shower, en suite, we both slept very well in this peaceful location. We enjoyed our evening meal, and then went for a walk in this pleasant village, and spoke with some of the most friendly of residents. We will definately be staying here again! Its just ten minutes to the east of Carlisle, giving us a very relaxing break from the motorway.

Excellent base for cycle touring. Secure cycle storage under cover. Good beer, friendly staff. Lots of quiet lanes to cycle round with plenty of places to stop for coffee etc.

After a long drive we were greeted by Mark who showed us to our room. We were booked in for 2 Nights both with evening meal. The meals are lovely, home cooked dishes. The room was lovely and clean with a lovely ensuite. As expected...

Friendly smiley staff. Our double en-suite room was very clean, spacious and equipped with t.v., bedside alarm clock and tea/coffee making facilities. Decoration could do with an update. Had a comfortable night’s sleep. Excellent evening meal, likewise same for our breakfast. Plenty of choices.

Just called in for a drink whilst out for a drive - impressed with the friendliness of bothe the landlord and the locals and would definitely call again if in the area. Prices were very reasonable too.

We rang in the morning to book a table for 9 people. When we arrived the staff were welcoming and friendly. Drinks sorted in no time at all and meal orders taken promptly. The food arrived in due course and was absolutely perfect! For 9...

Stayed at the belted on our yearly bike trip. 9 of us and there was not 1 complaint from anyone. Great pub, great food, great owners & staff, would highly recommend it.

Had a nice steak. Perfect cooked. Would try other meal next time. Pudding - had salted caramel cheesecake to die for. Had to reserve it before ordering meal. Worth visiting as it’s also bed n breakfast too. Easy to find.

Stayed overnight while walking Hadrian’s Wall. We rang from Lanercost and Stephen picked us up . Comfortable room, extremely clean. Tea, coffee, chocolate, biscuits and water all provided. We had dinner which was great- chilli was fab. Great breakfast too, nothing too much trouble. Highly...

A quaint pub in the middle of a sm village . Only stopped for a quick look would have liked to have eaten here as foid looked good .

Visited for an evening meal and drinks after a day's walking. The host was attentive and helpful, the steak pie could not be faulted and the Cumberland Ale in fine condition. A big thumbs up from me.

We did not stay at the inn, but we were taken there for dinner from the place we were staying at. This was a great treat after a long, intensive and very hot day of walking on Hadrian's Wall. The atmosphere was pleasant, and the food was excellent. The chef drove us back to our B&B;!

We had an evening meal here whilst staying at Quarryside B&B; at Banks. B&B; owners bring you here and landlord takes you back. You just have to enjoy the good food and beer and welcoming ambience of a traditional pub. Catered for veggie and vegan tastes. Great evening, thanks. Ian & Gerald

We ate dinner here in April, whilst staying at a B&B; in Brampton. Initial appearances made the pub seem a little dated, with the standard selection of beers and normal pub food options. Food prices seemed one or two pounds more than expected, however the portion sizes were very generous, which made up for it. There was only one woman working in the front of the pub the evening that we were there, and she was extremely helpful and pleasant, even though she appeared slightly run off her feet - hopefully during peak season she gets a bit more support.

My wife and I ate dinner here on April 19.

Solid proper pub food at a good price and large portions.

Good food we all had different dishes. Thought the cannaloni had too much sauce swimming in it. Should have kept to British pub grub which others had and looked great.

We visit the Belted Will every time we see our family in hallbankgate and without doubt we are always greeted with friendly faces and food/service is the best around :)

My friends & I stayed here during our motorbike trip around Cumbria & Northumberland. This is a really nice cosy homely place & the rooms were really comfortable clean & well cared for. No tired fixtures & fittings here. The pub is a proper pub with a good choice of beers & lagers & just the ticket for a relaxing evening with friends after a day on the bikes.. There was an excellent menu choice too in the restaurant & the sweet & sour battered chicken was excellent & a generous portion too.

Encontré este lugar por accidente, fuera de camino, pero precioso y obviamente mucha gente consigue encontrar como hemos intentado reservar ya y siempre lleno! ! Frecuentado por ciclistas y caminantes. Encantador, la comida normal! El personal amable y acogedor. Buena variedad en el menú y generosas porciones. Continuarán intentando reservar alojamiento!

Nos alojamos una noche mientras corta la pared de este a oeste. La habitación en-suite era bueno para una estancia de una noche. Los propietarios y el personal era muy amable. La comida fue genial, sabroso y abundante. El Inn en sí llenó durante la noche con diners y había asientos adicionales en el comedor del hotel. Excelente desayuno inglés completo.

Excellent food with a cosy and friendly atmosphere.

No se puede pedir una acogida más cordial. Visitamos durante un paseo de pared y la noche al era la pena el corto viaje en coche desde nuestro ser y estar. Mucha variedad de comida, que aunque fue bastante estándar, estaba delicioso. La cerveza es muy buena y el lugar tiene un ambiente agradable.

We dined here tonight and the service was superb. The food was very good and its presentation was also very good.

Y ser poco ser super buena comida, los dueños y el personal son amables. Gran desayuno listo para un día de paseo. a un precio razonable. Una desventaja que tenía la habitación al lado de las escaleras y encima de la entrada, así que teníamos el ruido de otros huéspedes en el restaurante filtrado por las escaleras y también los patrones de salir por un cigarrillo o dejar al final de su noche de tener total desprecio de gente tratando de dormir.

Aunque un pub, el restaurante está separado, buen servicio, agradable, buena elección camarera de comida sabrosa, bien de precio, aparcamiento cercano, encantador de leña se quema durante los meses de invierno. He estado muchas veces y las ofertas especiales regularmente cambios.

Nice country pub, free WiFi and a good atmosphere

Thrilled to have stayed here for 2 nights. Our hosts provide a superb service throughout. They are welcoming and helpful. The whole inn is very clean, rooms very well laid out and have everything you need. had breakfasts each day and also ate both evenings.. Extensive menu, lovely food, bar/restaurant staff welcoming, polite and helpful. It is clearly a child friendly establishment too. Our hosts simply couldn't do enough for us and also offer free transfers - invaluable when walking the trail. Highly recommend staying here.

Like some other reviewers, we were directed here by our hosts at the Abbey Bridge B&B. Had a very nice experience; the staff were friendly and jolly; the chef even drove us back to the B&B. Food was excellent. I had the fish pie, a best-seller according to the chef; other meat pies were appreciated by our fellow travelers. Wide assortment on the menu including curries and tasty desserts. Had we been staying more than one night, we would have happily returned.

No food where we were staying so our landlord drive is to The Belted Will Inn and we had a fun evening. The service was good and the food was delicious. All in all a satisfying evening.....and we got a lift home back to our lodgings.

Staying nearby, visited as a family and waited an hour for a table as we had not made a reservation - no problem, had a drink in the friendly pub. Nice menu - a bit more than the basic normal pub food, and excellent friendly staff. Enjoyed our evening, £73 for 4 of us, 2 courses and some drinks. Would recommend.

Stayed in a local B&B as they did not have rooms available for the nights we wanted, although we used the Belted Will Inn for our evening meals for the food was wholesome pub food well cooked and presented. The locals we friendly and welcoming.

Another lovely meal at The Belted Will. Fantastic pub with a selection of local real ales, a roaring fire, and a good choice of homemade traditional and special dishes. Brilliant service as usual, the staff are always very welcoming- professional and friendly. The food is fresh and tasty with generous portions- we managed to struggle through AND still order a pudding (cue 24 hour snooze). Hubby ordered the sticky toffee pudding which was devoured in minutes. Kids are welcome too and have a nice choice of menu. A great pub that caters well for tourists and locals- well worth popping in.

Just about OK, though the fish pie was pretty slimy and the whole place felt a bit grubby and run down. It was the only place for miles around, apparently, so that was a plus point, but I really didn't have a very good evening.

Had dinner there when staying locally. This pub was recommended for honest food. The service was excellent, friendly and welcoming staff. Attentive table service. Food OK, not great. We had fish and chips - fish not battered and crispy. Not sure how or when it had been cooked. A bit solid and not very attractive. Chips OK.

Yum yum! Service was first class (staff were extremely helpful, polite and knowledgable of the menu/drink menu etc). The menu includes a wide range of food which sounds gorgeous - including the breaded goujons and sirloin steak which I had. The bill at the end of the night was well worth paying as we had such a fantastic experience. We also thought the bill was modestly priced. All in all - fantastic night and we will definitely be returning at some point

I had a great veggie curry washed down with some real ale. The service was excellent and I got another proper good welcome!

As with previous reviewers, we were dropped here by our B&B hosts. Our table was waiting for us along with the most friendly bar and waiting staff imaginable. My hubby said the Wainwright beer was terrific as was the table service and menu. The food came promptly and was of good quality. The bill was also a pleasant surprise. To top it all the chef was kind enough to take us back to our B&B when he finished service - BEAT THAT!

Came to the Belted Inn after a day of sledging with my freinds and kids and were welcomed nicely. Very freindly staff. Nice warm fire inside to warm our clothes. Pool table inside and the food was tasty. Good menu with all your pub classics available. Will return again if in the area.

We went to the Belted Will with a friend of ours. This was our first visit despite only living a few miles away. We were not disappointed and will definitely return. We received a genuine warm welcome. The wine was very reasonably priced - we had the Rioja which was good. The food was freshly cooked. The fish and chips was really tasty and the steak pie was packed with meat. The chips and veg were also good. To finish - can't go wrong with a sticky toffee pud and custard, just right for a winter evening. Good food, good value, good service - what's not to like.

We were staying about 5 miles away from this pub while walking Hadrian's Wall path and the landlady dropped us off here. We told the barman that our landlady had booked us a table and he was as good as gold, sorted our drinks out, showed us to our table. Good choice on the menu plus a specials board, great beer to as its a free house. Food was excellent and to top it off the Landlord (who does the cooking) dropped us back home when the kitchen closed at 9pm. Well worth a visit to this pub, would go again.
