Duke of Cumberland in Carlisle

What a delight to stumble upon this little gem of a pub set in a beautiful village. A last minute phone booking for six people. On arrival we were greeted by warm friendly staff who made us feel at home. Our six different meals were the best we had over our weekend stay. would thoroughly recommend a visit.

We had a wonderful Sunday lunch here with our toddler and extended family. It’s really close to talkin tarn which is a lovely country park for walks with kids. The Duke of Cumberland was welcoming and cosy with great menu choice, delicious food and reasonably priced. Will definitely be visiting again!

Beautiful Sunday Lunch and great wine

We chose to come to The Duke of Cumberland for lunch for my birthday. There were 8 of us. Staff were so accommodating to our group, even ordering items in that weren't on the menu to ensure everyone was happy. The food was outstanding! Not one person could find fault with their meal (other than potions to big for small appetites), the quality was topnotch and everything seemed fresh and home cooked. From starters to puddings we weren't disappointed. The pub has such a lovely atmosphere and the staff were all lovely. We will absolutely return. Thank you for making my birthday extra special.

We have just returned from a fantastic meal here with our daughters and family. The service was excellent off Sophie, Lucy and the other staff members. Great friendly pub ( & dog friendly). Food is lovely, service is brilliant and atmosphere is spot on. I was there last week & again this week. Great roaring fire and the locals are so welcoming. I like to stay there as there are great walks, a lake and a reservoir, handy for Carlisle, Hadrians Wall, Brampton, Scotland. It truly is like The Lakes without the crowds and the bustle. ❤️😎

Came across this pub as it was recommended by the place we are staying for a long weekend away, read the reviews so had to give it a go. All I can say is WOW! We went for lunch, the girls were so welcoming, made a big fuss off our toddler and brought the dogs down to see him. The food was just incredible and it was so cosy and beautifully lit with gorgeous lights and chilled out music. I really wish I had a pub like this as my local, I'd be in all the time!!!

We were staying in the area and popped in to book a table for Sunday dinner, the staff were all really friendly and nice and the place had a lovely ambience to it. I usually like roast beef but unfortunately it had sold out so opted for the pork and all the trimmings. All very tasty and enjoyable. Really happy they were able to offer alternative zero alcohol drinks instead of the usual soft drinks, I had the gin which made a nice change. Would definitely recommend it here and would return if in the area.

We ate here at lunchtime on Friday. I went in to check that dogs were welcome and found they loved dogs and were very accommodating. We ordered 4 different meals and every one was excellent quality. They were flavoursome and plentiful. The staff made you extremely welcome, it was 3 sisters. They were so friendly. All in all we would strongly recommend you call in. We would call in on a regular basis if we didn't live in South Yorkshire. Well done ladies on a beautiful pub which hopefully we will be back.

Wow , what can I say about this place , me and my wife was in the area and call in on the off chance on a Saturday night , asked if they had a table for 2 free , they didn’t hesitate , the staff are all amazing and really friendly, it was that good for us we even came back the next day for a late lunch , once again a brilliant experience, we are just gutted we don’t live nearer to make it our local .

Just had the most amazing lunch at this gorgeous pub! I could tell when booking the table over the phone that the welcome would be friendly and it was, to us and our dogs Oreo and Miley. The pub is decorated beautifully and the people who looked after us were so friendly. Food was cooked to perfection and great to see a diverse range of veggie and vegan options too. Well what can I say! This place is amazing from the minute you step thro the door the atmosphere overwhelmed me, as did the food, the staff are so attentive and polite and their sunday lunch is so so tasty and full fulling shame we are just in holiday for a week 😋

Booked in for an evening meal. On arrival, the appearance of the premises was quite stunning, the food did not disappoint! Quite a diverse menu, including traditional british cuisine, mediteranian and superb sea food and pasta. The atmosphere was so warm and inviting, we didn't want to leave. Hubby had steak pie, which was dark and rich. I had pasta with prawns and chorizo, mum had a mushroom starter for her main. All delicious and mum was pleased she had left room for her outstanding sticky toffee pudding. The wines were also lovely. Highly recommend a visit.

We stopped here for lunch on a raining Sunday afternoon on route to Scotland. The food was amazing, with great portions and good price. The staff made you feel welcome and so helpful. We will definitely stop here again on one of our trips. Would recommend eating here. The Sexy Hairy Bikers

Beautiful setting, courteous and friendly service in a relaxed atmosphere where dogs are very welcome. The food was first class and priced reasonably.

Went to the Duke twice for a meal and drinks whilst staying nearby with our grandson Freddie and dog Jack,Julie the landlady and her staff are excellent and are genuinely friendly and made a fuss of Freddie which he loved,the meals and service are very good and the pub is obviously dog friendly,everything about our visit was 5*and we would go again.

A wonderful pub set in a small village, dog friendly. The food menu rotates and have different meals as well as specials making the choice varied, the quality is high but cost is very reasonable. They rotate the real ales ensuring plenty of choice and variety making it a enjoyable visit every time you go. If near by recommend to call in for food or just a drink. The staff are extremely friendly and the pud have a modern cosy feeling,

The pub is beautiful, situated in a very quaint village. The food was the best in the area, it was so good we went twice in a few days. I had the homemade lasagne on the first day which was superb then a homemade steak pie with chips and veg which was probably the best steak pie I have ever had.. All meals taste and look homemade. The pub is dog friendly and accommodates young families. The staff were great and very attentive and friendly, the music choices in this pub is great, all relaxing music which creates a good ambience. 5/5 will definitely return in the future, if I’m in the area with my family again. Came here for a family meet up on Sunday 20/8/23. My cousin who I only met last year from ancestry ,arranged it as my mum and her dad are cousins who have never met. We were staying in banks in a cottage but my cousin lives in Cumbria . There was 11 of us and our cocker pup Nova ,we booked and pre booked our meals in advance, and glad we did as was very busy. Food was amazing and massive portions .The kids had fish fingers and chips and they ate it all. Deserts were yummy too. The staff wonderful and very friendly. We all had an amazing and emotional day. We had Sunday lunch at The Duke of Cumberland. We had been advised to book as it gets busy on a Sunday, and so glad we did. We sat underneath the Angel Wings, which was a lovely spot. We had the Halloumi Fries and Thai Prawns for starter, followed by the Roast Beef. The food was cooked really nice and was well presented. The staff were very efficient and friendly. We enjoyed the food so much we will go back again before we leave the area. Thanks very much to all the staff.

In a nutshell, Pub based perfection. The service was friendly, attentive and felt very genuine. Our meals were faultless and absolutely delicious. We ordered a couple of the Steak pies which were served with green beans, peas and chips or mash. I chose the option to have ½ chips and ½ mash with an extra side of gravy. A homemade lasagne which came with chips and garlic bread completed the order. The portions were generous, the food cooked beautifully and everything tasted delicious. The Duke of Cumberland pub is a very lovely place to enjoy a beautiful meal and spend time in the comfortable inviting surroundings.

A friend of mine recommended The Duke and it proved to be very good choice. Our party of four and one dog, chose to sit outside, as it was a glorious day. We were even treated to horses grazing on the green nearby. The choice was vast and the quality was exceptional. The service was rapid and delivered with a smile.

Four of us visited here as the May instalment of our 'Calendar Crawl' (we purchase a British Country Pubs Calendar for the year and then proceed to visit each pub in the month it appears on the calendar). What an excellent find this pub was hidden in the wilds of the Cumbrian countryside on a warm sunny day. A lovely building which looked well kept, the inside being very nicely appointed and a comfortable place to be with good beers on draught and a well-stocked bar with excellent friendly staff, what more could you want; Well, we wanted lunch and what a great decision that turned out to be. We chose Lasagne, Whitby Scampi and local farm sourced Burgers, beautiful food accompanied by a couple of beers (Twice Brewed's Sycamore Gap and Hawkshead ITI) enjoyed in the great surrounds of the front terrace overlooking the village green. Having travelled 183 miles to get there I am pleased to say it’s an excellent pub in beautiful surroundings with friendly staff. I would recommend the Duke of Cumberland to all.
