Went with friend for lunch today. I really fancied a salad but it wasn’t on the menu. Sophie accommodated my request and brought out a fabulous salad. Everything was delicious and fresh. I finished the whole plate. My friend had the chicken goujon wrap and was also impressed. Lovely sunny afternoon in wonderful surroundings and delicious food…thank you

A wonderful pub set in a small village, dog friendly. The food menu rotates and have different meals as well as specials making the choice varied, the quality is high but cost is very reasonable. They rotate the real ales ensuring plenty of choice and variety making it a enjoyable visit every time you go. If near by recommend to call in for food or just a drink. The staff are extremely friendly and the pud have a modern cosy feeling,

The pub is a popular local and has a good regular clientele. There is a good range for starters , mains, and puddings. There is a large board advertising wines above the fire but it is so dark in the pub I couldn't read it. Sadly we were sat on a small circular table squashed between 2 larger ones with a real candle perched on the edge. Tricky when customers and staff were moving round. The portion size is generous and we enjoyed Haggis bob bons , cottage pie, chocolate brownie sundae and sponge and custard.

Absolutely awful. This ‘dog friendly’ pub had dogs that were behaving like pack dogs ie: snarling and barking at one another! Was extremely noisy at times. At one point I had a dog under my table looking for tip bits. I have a dog of my own so I am dog friendly but this was terrible!

It was also dog friendly, which I plan to bring mine when I next visit again. Highly recommend.

We visited for the the third time this weekend to meet up with family. There were seven of us and two dogs, we were seated very quickly having booked a table. The starters were delicious, goats cheese and caramelised onion bruschetta, creamy mushrooms and tempura prawns. All went down very well, the spicy parsnip soup was rather spicy. Main courses, the steak frites was absolutely spot on, the lamb was so tender, the Christmas dinners perfect and the fish pie was delicious. Deserts wise the brownie sundae was very naughty and the sticky toffee pudding as always was delightful. Only one issue, please help your servers knowledge about gluten free improve. Whilst you had it covered with a labelled menu, the server didn't fill us with confidence when we asked which deserts contained gluten and were told that the crumble was the only one suitable for a celiac. We were pretty sure this wasn't the case and upon further investigation the Eton mess was. Otherwise a lovely meal, beautiful surroundings and lovely staff! We will be back!

Our 3rd visit to The Duke. We have to travel 40 miles to meet friends and family in the middle, so I think that tells you how much we enjoy it here. Again we found a lovely comforting well set out old fashioned English Inn. The ambience in here is just great. Onto the food etc. We ordered a fish and chip dish, 2 x turkey dinners and a special fish pie meal. Each one of them was cooked really well, so tasty and fresh. The turkey dinners I was told were the best our two people had ate out. Very complimentary. I must say my fish was delicious, light and meaty and battered very well. The fish pie I was informed was excellent, piping hot and 'tasty as anything'. Service always friendly and prices reasonable adding to a very nice afternnon. The friendly pets in here are so canny. The two dogs and a cat we seen add to the perfect country pub feel. You must go and try it here as I am sure you will like it.

Sunday lunch was decidedly average, sadly. Usual warm welcome and fine surrounds but the roast was over-priced, especially as it came with frozen roast spuds, frozen Yorkshires and virtually raw cabbage - for £16! Starter was clearly shop bought as were the desserts. My cheesecake was like chalk with a bit of crumpled meringue and frozen berries barely thawed. Tasteless. The profiteroles were shop-bought too. Cost for two plus drinks £70. No finesse. Could have had it at home for £20. Shame to report that we were disappointed as it’s a lovely spot for a pub and previous visits have been great.

A great pub/restaurant with a fantastic feel to it, just like the 1st time we visited here several months ago. Four of us attended our bi-monthly get together as we live so far apart. This is almost in the middle of where our 2 houses are. We were not disappointed with anything in this Inn. It is an excellent place for any type of get together, be it a few drinks, a full session ( haha ) or a lovely meal. We opted for 4 lovely meals...... 2 x fish pie, scampi and a mean looking burger. All delicious, fresh and ample in their quantity and quality. The ladies serving were friendly, efficient and polite. ( as were the cat and two dogs ).......just a brilliant addition to our afternoon, petting the extremely friendly ' locals ' whilst we chatted at the end of our meal. As I said when I reviewed this place previously, we would probably be back. I will say the same again even though it is quite a trek, it is so comfortable and beautifully set out. Just right. All in all a perfect choice for us, try it here as I am sure you will love it.

Just written a damming review for a luxury 4 star hotel that I ate in the night before. The Duke of Cumberland was an amazing reminder of how to do things properly. The pub was welcoming, homely and dog friendly. We weren't rushed and even decided to stay for another round of coffee's as the atmosphere made catching up with friends enjoyable. Had Sunday lunch and the roast dinners were superb. Only disappointment is that we don't live close enough to go regularly!

I've heard a lot about the Duke of Cumberland, sitting in the centre of an idyllic village on the edge of the Northern Pennines. It was the ideal location for a family catch-up. The weather was actually good enough to sit outside, although that did mean I ended up a little pink. I should know better! It's a very busy pub, so you can reserve a table. Parking is available free on nearby streets. I opted for Earl Grey tea, and we decided to fight over a bowl of cheesey chips. That turned out to be a fabulous choice. They were proper cheesey chips, well cooked, and so hot that the cheese actually melted all the way through. We're going back for more!!! And we did twice!!! From calamari, scampi and chips to lasagne, and haddock and chips to chinese style belly pork, we have not been disappointed. We have never had a meal anywhere before where even the side dishes of peas and the likes are piping hot. There is no chance of getting cold "hot" food here. On each occasion, we've been so full that there's been no room for dessert. So we've decided we have to go again for starters and desserts only!!! We sat inside on our other visits. Fabulously decorated and cosy. The first we booked for, which I recommend with how busy it is. The second we'd been walking in the area so took pot luck. It was definitely meant to be. The facilities are good and clean. The staff have all been amazing and so helpful with our menu enquiries. Cash and card accepted.

Chips had a lovely crunchy to them. Little un had the kids Cumberland sausage, it was too much for her so I was more than happy to help her out. Delicious! You must try the steak pie here! Just had the most amazing lunch at this gorgeous pub! I could tell when booking the table over the phone that the welcome would be friendly and it was, to us and our dogs Oreo and Miley. The pub is decorated beautifully and the people who looked after us were so friendly. Food was cooked to perfection and great to see a diverse range of veggie and vegan options too. Wine list fabulous and a couple of perfectly kept hand pulls sampled too. We will be certain to return when next in this beautiful part of the world. Thank you, Rob and Mark

Booked in for an evening meal. On arrival, the appearance of the premises was quite stunning, the food did not disappoint! Quite a diverse menu, including traditional british cuisine, mediteranian and superb sea food and pasta. The atmosphere was so warm and inviting, we didn't want to leave. Hubby had steak pie, which was dark and rich. I had pasta with prawns and chorizo, mum had a mushroom starter for her main. All delicious and mum was pleased she had left room for her outstanding sticky toffee pudding. The wines were also lovely. Highly recommend a visit.

Great village pub. Friendly and warm. Menu is a bit more than pub grub and is good value for money.

We had a truly warm welcome and fantastic meal here when visiting the area. Rang to book and we were squeezed in by a very friendly lady who welcomed us on arrival. Everyone friendly and chatty at the bar (great to meet the two local gentleman and discuss everything from black pudding to the scottish islands). Food service was equally friendly and done with a smile! Fish and chips excellent and great value as it was Fish and Chip Friday. Steak pie delicious too. If you are looking for good food and a warm welcome we certainly recommend trying the Belted Will.

We managed to return after quite a few months, was not disappointed, David is outstanding, genuinely caring and professional with a huge amount of experience and knowledge. We’ve tried the other usual suspects around the area but nothing hits the spot like David’s Restaurant. They all seem to have a bizarre attempt at modern fusion cuisine which is just getting to confused to enjoy to be honest, David’s is simply proper cooking at its best! I am a chef so appreciate real homemade food, and this is absolutely what it is. High end restaurant food made from scratch in house. Can’t believe we’ve left it so long since going, clearly our favourite by far, and this is from a well travelled chef with his own food business, 100% my favourite spot in the city, should easily have a rosette or two! Looking forward to our next visit, alone leave it as long for sure!!!

We had an amazing stay at the Kirkstyle Inn & Sportsmans Rest, lovely big room with the most comfortable bed. The staff are friendly and the food was so good. We would highly recommend staying here and will certainly be back in the near future.
