The Stirling Smith in Stirling

I cannot say that I was a fan of most of the paintings on display but there were some amazing pieces of needlework, I really liked the tiger and there were fascinating displays of historical artifacts and items related to social history. The cafe was very good with great value, fresh, homemade food and friendly staff. No wonder that it was full when we arrived.

An exceptionally small museum with an art gallery and a room of historical artifacts. The visit won’t take long. It’s located close to the city center, so if you have an extra half hour in Stirling, it’s worth a quick look. The most fantastic thing is that it feels cosy there.

So impressed with this place. Full of beautiful art and interesting artefacts. There are activities as well and a super cafe. Clean and very good for children. Super kids corner and lovely little garden. Highly recommend for all ages. Will be going back often just as my mother does. We take my toddler.

It's free, Very informative and excellent displays. Historical a must see. Recommended

One exhibition of the history of the Stirling starting in 13-14 centuries to 40-50 years ago.

Visited the excellent RSN exhibition here today. Had lunch in the cafe and can totally recommend the soup on the menu. A really lovely plate of vegetable soup (soup of the day) made by Paula who runs this cafe. Great table service and delightful staff. Thank you!

There are some gorgeous paintings here. Also a history of Stirling.

Lovely gallery with a great cafe

What a fantastic little museum. Packed full of interesting cultural and historical artefacts relating to the area and displayed thoughtfully. The artworks are also a wonderful collection. It's free and run by lovely staff.

Excellent free exhibition from RSN. Running till start of November. Well worth seeing.

Wonderful Art gallery, I've had the pleasure of attending a couple of gallery openings which were incredibly moving. The main art gallery is full of incredible examples of fine art, as well as some quirky pieces which really are a must see.

Lovely way to spend a few hours..lots to see .for a small museum..friendly staff..also has a Caffe...it free to entre. .a bonus if you have children....

Loved this gallery and museum, the halls all have different stories to tell and the building has been kept true to itself. The cafe is great and the staff lovely. Get yourself there, it's a must if in the area.

The exhibitions at the Smith are extremely well curated and explained. I had been at the building before but was completely unaware of the significant museum at the rear of the building. Superb!

The first gallery has a new, excellent exhibition of politically charged works by Andrew Hay, "Darkness at the Edge of Democracy," focused on the 1984-85 coal strikes. The second gallery is largely focused on the paintings of Smith himself. Behind these two galleries is an eclectic mix of historical artefacts about the history of Stirling itself.

Small and intimate with new exhibitions. Lovely cafe.

Although only a few minutes away from us I've only been here twice. Nice place to visit. I'll let the pictures do the talking!

Good art gallery & local history museum.

Evening talk about the history of the Smith and some art, sculpture and artifacts from it's collection. Very enjoyable and interesting!

A wee gem of an attraction just ten minutes from the train station and five from the city centre. Some great exhibits to explore and learn about the local area. Also just five minutes walk form kings park for a nice walk in the sunshine.

Just visited and saw a fantastic exhibition entitled Darkness on the Edge of Democracy by Andrew Hay. Amazing, very thought provoking. Staff at the museum were so friendly and helpful. Lots more to see and a nice cafe which we didn’t have the time to enjoy but looked very good. Free to enter.

Went in for lunch had the ploughman's delicious. Staff so friendly.

A lovely little art gallery in the centre of Stirling. Great staff. I had a bacon roll and cup of coffee that were just the ticket on a cold day.

A lovely art museum, very eclectic exhibition.

The Museum is a good option after visiting the Castle, 10 minutes walk from the center. It's free and small but well served and tells the history of the region!

There is a David Mach exhibition on just now and it is fascinating. Several items all constructed with coloured sewing pins. I only kept the photo of the Queen 's head so I could send it to my son in California. There is also a selection of his books, very interesting and most reasonably priced. Do try and catch it and maybe sample the café. A warm and welcoming coffee shop space. Good selection of breakfast, lunch and cakes. All the beverage choices you could wish for, served by friendly staff. I hadn't time to take in the gallery/exhibitions but I will be back.

Reviewing the cafe...... Absolutely the best coffee I've had in a while. Gluten free carrot cake looks good too. Very friendly staff. I'll be back!

Great value and a nice venue. Definitely worth a visit and far better than the typical chain coffee shop.

Great exhibits plus activities and dress up for children

Went here for a social gathering and lecture because they have an ideal small lecture theatre. Also visited the exhibition space: Two rooms, one for paintings and one larger hall, narrating the history of Stirling with a series of fascinating exhibits. They also have a café area. Entry is free but donations towards to support them are welcome and worth considering.

Nice place to have lunch or coffee/tea. Would be good if they offered gluten free bread. Perhaps I should have asked but I didn't see it on the menu.

Great little free museum with some really interesting pieces and art. Will take no more than about 45 mins to get round (if you are slow like me) and there is also a lovely cafe inside too.

Well set out and quiet, with a pleasant tranquil cafe.

Interesting some interesting items on display, however I was there for a bonsai demonstration. Had a ploughman's lunch definitely recommend if you are in the area.

This is a very small Art Gallery, but despite this well worth a visit. The displays are excellent and the history of Stirling exhibit is well worth a visit. The cafe was fantastic with an excellent choice of meals.

We had a lovely lunch here today in the very pleasant cafe. The portions were generous and the service was polite and friendly. Very good value and we really enjoyed it. After lunch we wandered round the extraordinary collection of things from the local area. It’s not a Morden museum and you stumble into things which have lots of interesting information about them on cards and labels and stuff. The place is free to enter and the museum staff were really helpful.

This is a very quaint and higgledy piggedy museum and gallery with some rare objects on display. I am not sure it has changed much since I was here 50 years ago. There are very few relics from the battle of Bannockburn are I think they are all in a little glass case in a corner of the museum. There are some ancient whale bones, carved panels from the palace of Stirling castle and lots of information cards explaining the story of Stirling in a very random and pilled up way. I loved it. Free parking and really good cafe. The staff are exceptionally attentive and the food is very well priced. Nicely presented in a very high ceiling room. I had a very large ploughman’s here today and I doubt I will need dinner.

Fantastic food friendly and helpful staff in a beautiful setting the chips are the best i have tasted

Had a great chickpeas and avocado sandwich. Very filling and tasty. Staff were lovely and it's dog friendly. The building itself is extremely interesting and they have good exhibitions.

A little gem on the outskirts of Stirling ..so no parking problems! The exhibitions were very interesting and varied.Someof the art was terrific and I particularly enjoyed the photograghy exhibit and the large exhibition hall about the history of Stirling.

Museum and gallery is brilliant. Lots to see and loads of interesting artifacts. Going through the centuries of Stirling. Free parking through the barrier to the side. The cafe inside is a gem. We had tuna toasties and BLT both with amazing salad and crisps. Belting place and great guys working there 👍

Nice place. Lovely cafe. It's more museum than gallery, but worth a visit.

The coffee shop has no lovely warm welcome .. staff didnt chat .. food was lovely ..

There are three section. One a photography section of black and white photos of early London. One paiting gallery -mostly traditional. One section on Stirling's history. This is the best section. It is free for entry and closes atv5 pm. But there is a suggested donation od 3 GBP. Also you can get brochures on Stirling on where to go what to do. Also reviews of restaurants and nearby places. Worth a visit one afternoon. Walking distance from the city center clock tower and library.

Great on a wet day in Stirling, so plenty of opportunities to visit.

Lovely local museum giving good explanation of history of Stirling and some of the people. Nice cafe and great staff

What a wonderful fascinating place. The photography exhibition was my favourite part being a street photographer myself. The art exhibition was absolutely cracking along with the museum which captured Scottish life perfectly. The lady on reception was very informed and pleasant. The little cafe makes lovely coffee and, wonder of wonders, the most delicious gluten free carrot cake.

yesterday afternoon I visited the art museum, I can say that the museum has wonderful paintings, I was fascinated by the lovely place with contents that I had not seen in other museums. the staff is really sweet, you can see everything in one day. ☺️ I'd recommend it if you have some time left over in sterling.

Never disappoints, and its free entry with a collection box. Decent car park at the side as well. The gardens are good but only partially accessible for wheelchair users.

A lot of interesting things in a medium sized, but beautiful building. Helpful staff and a great cafe. Garden at side and back plus parking.

Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area, lots to see and it's not just an art gallery, a lot of interesting items concerning the nearby battle of Banikburn. Top Tip - if you enter the car park through the automatic barrier, ask at the reception for the exit code ( you will need it to exit the car park ). They are closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Great customer service and very helpful staff. Thanks again for helping me when i couldn't get a taxi to get the car keys to my husband, a wonderful gentelman from the staff in the gallery offered to drop me off to the National Wallace monument and saved the day! Really couldn't thank the staff enough for going the extra mile in helping us .

Some interesting local artefacts and information

A gem of a place. Brimming with history and on display the oldest football in the world which was found in Stirling Castle. Also has a lovely little cafe inside. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Visited yesterday and was a very positive experience. Set in a lovely area of Stirling I'd not been in before. Really interesting varied exhibits in the the museum and interesting information about both the history of Stirling and Scotland. Would have liked more art exhibits but what there was was worth seeing - especially the works of Thomas Sterling Smith.

Very interesting place to visit because it is an art gallery and museum. Some really interesting items from Stirling's history. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The cafe was lovely with very tasty cakes plus they also do meals for breakfast and lunch. Toilets were clean and tidy. Free parking onsite.

Shame it wasn't bigger but what is there is really good. Spent a few hours with the kids who also enjoyed it

What more can you ask for with free entry? Great for inquisitive kids and adults alike.

Interesting place too visit too look at some Scottish history

I really enjoyed my visit to the café and art gallery but I found the museum was quite cold so I didn't stay as long as I might have... Lots of interesting artefacts and exhibits

We were up here for a couple of days and happened upon this little gem of a place while out on a wee walk.Its full of a very eclectic collection of wonderful things.I also like the fact it celebrates local artists as well and if you see something you like,made by them you can buy it.The cafe is an added bonus.We really enjoyed our visit.The entry is free,but a small donation is always welcome especially if you use the fancy coo on the way oot.

Tried the onsite café when we collected some artwork, lovely food and good value

Very interesting with many thought-provoking artworks and artefacts. I'm visiting from Edinburgh so I did learn a lot about Stirling. Cool for inspiring a vision of what historical Stirling, and the rest of Scotland was like. Lunch was nice too, had an avocado and hummus toastie which was lovely with pumpkin seeds inside.

Give yourself plenty of time to explore this collection, there's so much history within.

A very interesting mix of art gallery and local museum with the added bonus of a wonderful sensory garden and a small cafe as well . personal favourites were the amazing life size Tunnocks tiger and the story of the worlds first football , a very good way to spend a few hours in Stirling

An interesting art gallery and museum, so many different items from different periods of time. A rather good film showing different local clips from the Sterling area, with original cinema seats to sit in. Although I did not make use of the cafe, the locals obviously love it.

Lovely little gallery and museum. Enjoyed a slice and cake and cup of tea in the café until a member of staff brought their dog (not on a lead) to wander around the diners. When I questioned this I was told that the café is dog friendly. I would have preferred dogs to be supervised.For this reason I won't return.

we booked a visit to the Smith Art Gallery for a summer University programme, and it was very successful and appreciated. A great glimpse into Scottish art and Stirling history.

FREE TIME TRAVEL! What a superb destination. Stuffed with interesting exhibits from Roman through to contemporary. ( I loved Robert Mach's ingenious use of re-purposed food wrappers to form beautiful object d'arts). Friendly, enthused and genuinely helpful staff and a nice little eatery to boot. It also sits in a lovely part of Stirling. This is a great go-to.

The Spanish girl on the desk was very helpful and let us put our travel bags in a cupboard so we didn't have to carry them around with us.
