It is an award winning restaurant and you can clearly see why. It was for my boyfriends birthday and we had booked to go to the Stirling Distillery for a gin tour and tasting. Before we went we wanted to book somewhere for dinner. It was on a Monday and we tried to book dinner in the Friars Wynd. The girl told us that the kitchen was closed that evening however recommended Brea which was just on the street up from Friars. The girl that took our booking was very accommodating and explained they had a large party due in that evening. We got to book a table for the time we were looking for. The ambiance of the restaurant and the decor is lovely. The food was superb it was not only delicious but was presented beautifully. I had the salmon stuffed haddock on a bed of mashed potato with a creamy cheese sauce served with vegetables. My boyfriend went for the surf and turf. I tasted the skin on fries and the steak looked and tasted amazing. The meal was superb and I would highly recommend the restaurant.

Want to preface this review by saying the food was beautiful. When we came in my partner told the waitress our name and time of booking. She went away and another member of staff came up to us and asked again if we had a booking. We got placed at a separate table next to the bar and were sitting there for almost 30 minutes before someone took our drinks and food order. I asked for olives for the table the waitress didn’t note any of our order down. Fifteen minutes after we ordered the waitress came back to double check what drink I ordered. We eventually got our drinks and starters came out but no olives. When someone asked how are starters are they asked ‘do you still want those olives’ I said no and they laughed and apologised. It was very hard to get any waitresses attention as they were up at the bar chatting with the chefs or cleaning tables. At one point I looked up at the bar and one of the waitresses was stroking a chefs arms through the serving hatch. Our dessert order was forgotten about so the desserts kindly got taken off the bill. I had a drink sitting at the bar for 15 minutes before someone got me it. I was close to going up and getting it myself. The waitresses were nice and friendly but I’m afraid it’s the worst service I’ve had in a long time no matter how amazing the food was.

If you're looking for an example of what good Scottish food and drink is all about then you'll not be disappointed. The taste and presentation of the food is tremendous and definitely worth the few pounds extra (compared to other local eateries) I'm gluten free and was delighted to see so many good options, and especially so many Scottish GF beer options, I think they have 5 plus another GF alcohol free option on the drinks menu. For me, finding a nice restaurant with GF food AND proper GF beer (not just that imported nonsense) is still quite rare, and why I'm giving Brea the full 5 stars.

This restaurant has won awards for a reason. We have been here two times and both times the food was simply exquisite! Not only the ingredients used are first quality, but they are also put together perfectly! This time my husband ordered a Scottish haddock roll stuffed with smoked salmon, dill sauce, vegetables and mashed potatoes. I ordered one of the chef’s special of the day. I ordered pan seared salmon with a shellfish creamy sauce, season vegetables and I asked to swap the potatoes it comes with by puy lentils. Both dishes were delicious! The service is great, people are friendly and very helpful if you have questions. Portions and prices are right, too. I would say that this has one of the best meals we’ve had in Scotland. Will definitely come back over and over again! It gets busy pretty quickly, so it would be best if you make a reservation ahead of time. Update: 14.02.2024 We went for lunch yesterday as it was Valentine’s day and, again, we were pleased with the dishes we ordered. Both my husband and I had the same dish with different sides. We ordered the Scottish haddock roll stuffed with salmon with a dill sauce. I ordered seasonal vegetables and he ordered mashed potatoes. I also ordered the soup of the day which was butternut squash and coconut soup. And we ventured with dessert this time and ordered the brownie with passion fruit coulee and pistachio ice cream. The haddock was superb! The contrast of flavors of haddock and salmon is just perfect! Also the flavor of the dill sauce matches the fish’s perfectly! I had not tried this dish before, but I’m sure I will have it again! The soup was just perfect combination of flavors, textures, the sweetness of the butternut and the creaminess of the coconut milk plus a spicy touch. Just delicious! And dessert, well… it was beyond words! The level of deliciousness is astounding! The pictures talk by themselves! As always, service is amazing and staff is very friendly and knowledgeable!

We were really disappointed as have heard great things...very overpriced for the quality of the dishes. Duck starter was a bland, meagre portion. Vegetarian option for main we had an aubergine salad. I was looking forward to trying out Brea because of the awards it’s won, however it didn’t live up to expectation for me. The soup was very tasty but apart from that I was disappointed. My main was a salad from the special (maybe choosing a salad was my bad). It was very basic and the roasted aubergine didn’t have much flavour. I think there was a dressing but not enough. It was £19 which is wild for what I got and how it tasted. Maybe not the place for a vegetarian/don’t choose the salad 🤣 Not sure I’ll be back because of the price and my experience. (The girl serving did a good job- she was solo and had a decent number of tables to manage on her own. )

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Poor Service & Average “Gourmet” After having seen the menu and positive reviews, my partner and I decided to dine at Brea. We wanted somewhere for a special occasion meal as it was my birthday and they were advertising “gourmet” food. Upon first impression, we were greeted by staff who were welcoming and offered us a choice of table. We were asked if we would like water for the table, then disappeared for a while before taking our drinks order. After our drinks order was taken and brought to the table, our food order was taken; the serving staff was again friendly. They reassured me that my venison could be refired should it be too rare for my liking. The starters took approx 20 mins to arrive (partner had scallops and I had the smoked duck). My partner’s scallop dish was salty partnered with bacon which is also salty. My duck was thinly sliced smoked duck which was cold - it tasted nice but I suppose I would have appreciated a better menu description. The starters were collected and believed to be asked if they were okay although I just heard a mumble as the plates were picked up. The mains arrived in good time (partner had haggis neeps & tatties and I had the venison), my partner rated his meal as average and my venison dish was described to have a red wine and thyme jus. Upon looking at the dish, there didn’t appear to be any jus of this description on the plate but rather a very small amount of clear-light brown specked watery liquid. This is where things really started to go downhill for us - I waited for approx 5-10 minutes for someone to check on how our food was, bearing in mind I’d had the reassurance beforehand about me needing anything changed. I could see 2 staff members walking up and down the bar, one occasionally looking into the kitchen or polishing glasses. Then, when I thought I’d got someone’s attention and waved over at someone looking in my vague direction, turns out they had come over to sit another customer, and then returned back to the bar area. They continued not to look in our direction and so, I then had to walk to the bar and explain. The staff member asked if I had any jus at all and if I had the berries on my plate, I explained that I had berries, however, there wasn’t any jus on the plate. They said that the jus had probably been absorbed by the food, and that they’d send me some more. I was provided with some jus, and I’ll fail to believe that it’s the same that was on the plate - this time around it smelt like red wine and had a thicker consistency. For £29, I don’t appreciate not being served an appropriate sauce (or a sauce at all for that matter) and then having to chase someone for it. I would have really understood if they were busy doing something. So, as we are waiting for our plates to be cleared, the couple next to us (who were seated after us and eating their starters and mains after us) had their plates cleared first and asked if they would like anything else. We waited at least 20 minutes to receive the bill - staff were again difficult to obtain attention from. I couldn’t keep track of the whole restaurant, although it did seem that it was very much pick and choose as to who was getting what. So to summarise, I’m so disappointed. The food has a fancy presentation, tastes alright, that’s probably why people like it. But alright/average tasting food accompanied with extremely poor service? No thanks

Food is tasty but no better than what you’d expect from a “typical Scottish dish” ready meal. Was greeted with friendly faces and a generally calming atmosphere but by the time we started eating, this friendliness had depleted to the point I almost had to second guess whether the server did actually work there. Felt almost like a street scammer trying to win you over before taking your money and running. if you want to have a tasty meal and feel welcome for a quarter of the price I’d walk straight past here and make my way to McDonald’s. A deffo no from me.

Overall I have given this a 4 because the food really was delicious. But as someone who has worked extensively in hospitality I need to share that our experience last night was really affected by the poor service. The restaurant was not busy, maybe only 3 other tables in. There were three wait staff on but they just stood around behind the bar. They took about 15 minutes to ask us what we'd like to drink then probably about 25 mins to bring the drinks. Then during our main course they did not bring us the water we asked for and they did not actively offer us more drinks even though all our glasses were empty. They didn't even ask if everything was OK with our food (which it was, sublime thank you). At one point one of the waiters went and sat down at a table with some other people that were in which because it was quiet was not really an issue but at the time we had no drinks or water so we found this quite rude. Ordinarily I would tip 10% as a minimum but probably for one of the first times ever we agreed that they did not deserve a tip which, is a shame because the chefs did. Your staff need a shake. We spend nearly £400 last night and I would still return as the food was great but if I received that level of service again I would not give you a 3rd chance. Staff training needed ASAP. Yours respectfully, Susan Robertson

I ordered the smoked duck with blackberry puree, chorizo jam and crispy Parma ham appetizers, as well as the scallops. The duck was a perfect combination of soft chewy duck, crisp ham and a delicious jam. The scallops were made to perfection. What stole the show, however, was the venison. No steak knife was required for this tender cut, perfectly pink and tender. To finish, I ordered the traditional cranachan with high expectations. We were looking for somewhere to have a light lunch and we liked the look of this restaurant while wandering around Stirling. We chose to share chicken and haggis croquettes, garlic bread and the Scottish cheese board and found all of these choices delicious. The...

Was very disappointed with my meal and also the restaurant was cold. It was supposed to be a steak burger but it was dry and the bun was not toasted. It tasted very spicy. Deffo not home made. None of the servers came near us to ask if we were enjoying our meal. I should have told them during the meal but didn’t want to spoil my sisters experience as she enjoyed her scallops. When they came to take our plates away I was asked if everything ok and I said not really. He laughed when I said I felt the burger was spicy which was very rude. I noticed they had still charged me but didn’t charge for my cocktail. Very disappointing experience.

I took some staff and clients to this restaurant recommended by one of our clients. Food was superb, service was impeccable. Pricing was fair and the portions were good, so much so we could not face a pudding. Interestingly they have not fallen in to...

Meilleur steak de ma vie. Et pourtant la gastronomie fait partie de ma culture ! Délicieux avec une sauce très bonne. Un temps d’attente plutôt élevé mais qui valait le coup, merci beaucoup ! ☔️

Amazing food! Charlene was very helpful in recommending traditional Scottish cuisine for our first meal in Scotland. The Cullen Skink was so good! The Scallops and Haggis were also very tasty. Highly recommend!

Really good food. The portions are on the small side. The starters and desserts cost between £10-20 and the main courses are between £20-30. I would love to come back another time.
