Popped in for a Roast Dinner for two today. Our first visit to this pub. Smashing food, lovely roast beef dinner with plentiful veg and spuds. Followed up with sticky toffee pudding and upside down apple pie. Both were delicious. (Not photographed, too busy eating).

The owners always make everyone feel so welcome. A homely, personal pub with a country feel. A small, home cooked menu, bought to the table by Mark, the chef and landlord. Arleta, his wife, serves drinks with a huge smile and time for a chat. You leave this pub with a full tummy and a warm heart..

We celebrated my Uncles 80th birthday here, as soon as we walked through the door & to the bar we felt like a local, all of the staff were lovely. They had put on hot & cold food that was all absolutely delicious. The bar prices were reasonable. For a small pub I felt they had it just right, we didn’t see the outside space being February & cold but we will definitely return in the summer.

Lovely pub and interior. Drinks were good, music was good food was ok. I wish I could give this place 5 stars. What could up their game is a card machine that works (been broken for ages), more staff to cater for their hungry/willing/loyal customers and bigger portions with the food. Such easy things to remedy :)

May 2024 - Second stay at the Steam Packet! We love that is is out of the way with great views. Owners are kind and accommodating! Our room had a reasonably sized bathroom and a small, but well stocked kitchen which would be great for a longer stay. Bed was very comfortable. Room also has a small television and reliable internet. The rail station is only a few streets away, and the walk to the beaches are about .75 miles from either side. You can either take the boardwalk direct or meander though town [we love the charity shops and pubs] or cross the bridge for a more natural scene. There are a only a few places to eat in the off-season, so be prepared to hunt for the jems! Town is small but cozy and entertaining, much like the Steam Packet!

Booked table online, arrived and they did not know we were coming. Said dog friendly on website but really not sure they were as they seemed to want to push us to sit on the roof terrace! They didn't seem prepared for us to order food, why else would we have booked a table? The food took an hour which is fine if they are cooking from scratch but disappointingly small portions. In fact my husband and son's resembled child portions, pity it wasn't child prices. My daughter in law couldn't get the meal she ordered (burger) so opted for Greek Salad. It resembled a side dish as it was so small and to top it off she was really ill the next day!! I had a coffee and they supplied a macaron with it which couldn't be bitten, even banging it on table wouldn't crack it. Goodness knows how old it was. My daughter in law wrote to the pub to point out how ill she's been and they replied saying no-one has complained before but they had checked all the food was in date and it was fine but they had thrown out the offending items! No mention of macaron. We did notice no-one else was eating. Very disappointed and won't be returning or recommending.

Clean and well equipped room with cooker fridge microwave and toaster. Although not used very handy. Comfortable clean bed with summer weight duvet which was appreciated in the current hot weather. Very helpful and willing owners . Separate side entrance from pub handy. On a main road and near railway yet room overlooking the river was very quiet. A good nights sleep even with window open. House rules in welcome pack in room but nothing more, needed to ask for WiFi password. would be helpful to add password along with a breakfast menu to welcome pack. We were asked what we would like for breakfast but hard to choose when you don’t know what’s on offer. Had full English on day one and owners speciality omelette on day two. All food was over cooked which was a shame making the omelette unpleasant. Don’t choose scrambled eggs not good more like stirred omelette. Cucumber and slice of gherkin pickle on breakfast plate as an unnecessary garnish, not sure why. Attentive owners.

We stayed here mid July 21, the room had a kitchenette which was unexpected but very useful with a fridge and tea making facilities, the bed was comfy and all was very clean. I have to add its on a main road and as it was warm we had the windows open so you can hear a bit of road noise. The bar was well stocked and whilst we only ate in once the food was hot and very tasty. The hosts could not have been any more helpful suggesting things to do (and what to avoid) and even lent us two bikes to go out on the Sat. They served a good breakfast and offered more of anything we wanted, not that we did as there was enough served. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would recommend it for a short break

so i recently went to the steam packet for a quick drink whilst waiting for a friend to let me know that they had arrived on the train. on first impressions the the place has been nicely refurbished however after walking in the door my eyes were greeted by what can only be described as a troglodyte behind the bar he was wearing a shirt (with unbuttoned top button which you may think no big deal) a tie with the knot half way down his chest and a look on his face that said either he didn't want to be there or that he couldn't care less about his job my bet is that he was a few beers short of a six pack going by the gormless expression. anyhow i digress after perusing the bar to look at the selection of beers (very small) and ciders (non existent) i tried to get his attention but he just wandered off now at this point i am of course starting to feel a little annoyed all i want is a drink. whilst waiting for him to come back a polish woman came to the bar and in a very condescending tone asked "what do you want" disdain dripping off her every word now i should mention at this point that this is in ittlehampton at least considered a high end establishment where most patrons are wearing a suit and tie but as it was my day off i was in jeans a black tee shirt and a leather jacket so not the smartest looking individual but hey what can you do. i never got to answer as at this point i hear a lot of shouting coming from the kitchen along the lines of" you wanna watch yourself now you dont work here coz we'll ruin you" there were a few expletives in there but i feel that it wouldn't be appropriate to recount them. it turns out they were taking to a member of staff who was there to get their pay check nd the person shouting this was the chef someone i have seen around town and in the shops abusing people in the supermarkets if you want a good idea of what sort of person she was then go to Reddit and look up entitled parents threads. at this point i left as i didnt want to be in a place that treats thier staff this way and my friend had called to say he was in the town. i later found out that the polish lady that spoke to me was the owners wife and the chef was his daughter so im guessing the apple didnt fall far from the tree there in closing unless you want to support the rudest and most entitled people i have ever met i wouldnt go here if it was the last place in town my friend and i went to the bar down by the river in the end and had a great night.

Shown to the best of 2 tables, by the door, no backrest only cold window frame. Chose Sunday roast X 2. Beef tough, not sliced, just scraps and end bits from different cuts. Plenty veg, but too al dente. Soggy undercooked Yorkshire pud. Frozen roasties. Gravy same for pork as beef. Both plates of food ghastly! We were not offered dessert menu. Ambience in pub was nil, proprietors only interested in their "cliques"! The overall feel was that we had intruded on a private party! At a cost of £ 32.10 for 2 very inferior plates of food and a small glass of wine and beer we felt cheated by this lunchtime experience.

After attending the regular Thursday evening quiz for some time, it has become apparent that the Landlord will not control a very small minority of drunks sitting at the bar ruining the evening for the vast majority.

This is a nice little pub that had a well stocked bar, and some seating outside. It has live music on some nights.

Visited here as a party of 22. Pre-ordered meals. Good pub food and a great selection of beers. Food served promptly. Home made pies were particularly enjoyed. Well done and thanks.

This is a real find. A family-run pub that boasts a menu of mainly home cooked food. I had a Sicilian fish soup for a starter that was amazing - thick, plenty of different fish and very tasty. Then I had a chicken and mushroom pie that was also clearly home made and was delicious. One of our group had the rhubarb crumble which she raved about.

The Steam Packet is more or less our 'local' - it is a nice walk along the sea front and quay side; but we had not tried the food! However, having friends down to stay over the weekend, we thought we would give it a try for Sunday lunch - even after some of the negative comments. The food was lovely! Freshly prepared (they do say on the menu that as the food is prepared to order, you may have to wait) - which for me means a good chef in the kitchen. Our waitress was charming - very helpful and cheerful (it was a dull, rainy Sunday). There are the usual roasts on offer as well as the 'Specials' board and the á la carte menu. There were five in our party and everyone enjoyed their food and all plates were cleared. The draught beer was fresh and the guest ale was different - but in a good way! All in all we were very pleased with our meal, the beer and the ambience of the pub (it was very full by the time we left) and we would definitely go again for Sunday lunch and try one of the regular jazz nights.

Booked a table at the last minute. Does "yes, come anytime" mean people avoid it or is it because they have a huge number of tables?A starter of whitebait was excellent if a little slow in arriving. The roast was plentiful with an excellent range of veg. Large plateful with tasty meat. Slight negatives were over cooked veg and a poor Yorkshire pudding( I am a Yorkshireman). The wine was served at an excellent temperature.Dessert served to the next table looked excellent. The wait for the first two courses meant we did not have time to try it.Overall just above average.

I went to the Steam Packet for lunch with my accountant for a meeting. We have a light lunch and a couple of pints of ale. There were only two other people in the pub and it took a while to get served drinks. Both ales were well past their best being flat and one slightly vinegary which to be fair they exchanged for another. Sadly it was not much better so I took a bottles beer instead. The lunch took a while to prepare but was ok.The pub looks lively inside and there is a small outside area. The main thing was the strange atmosphere. You were aware that the older manager/owner was listening in on our conversation which was unusual.

3 out for lunch. Celery and carrot pie (was supposed to be steak and ale) was not nice. Asked not to have carrots as a side dish but was not informed by waiter that the pie was full of them and tons of celery which was all you could taste. Fish and chips not nice and charging £10.95 for a burger and 7 rehashed chips(multicoloured) not good.

It had been some considerable time since we visited the Steam Packet in Littlehampton. In the past the public house had some ups and downs and had even been closed for a while but a friend said that business was now on the 'up' and that the establishment had been redecorated and was now quite smart. We decided to visit for lunch on 29 June 2017 but as we approached there were no bar lights on and we thought it was closed, as it is on Mondays. However the front door was open. We walked in but not a sign of life and so I called out "is anybody there". A young fellow appeared from what I presume was the kitchen and I ordered two pints of 'Downland' bitter. There were only two draft beers available, the other being the national 'Directors' bitter. What was amazing was that at the time we arrived at 12.10 there was not a single customer in the pub and when we left at 13.40 not a single person had come into the pub = zero customers. It was almost embarrassing. Sadly the beer was NOT in good condition. It was cloudy and was just on the cusp of us taking it back. We didn't do that because we didn't want Directors. We had a light lunch, which to be fair was well presented and tasty. The price was in line with general pub prices. I asked about the lack of customers and another older man said that they were quite busy in the evenings and that they had well attended quiz and live music nights. However the Steam Packet definitely lost money on this particular lunchtime. The Arun View next door was well populated and so the owners/managers need to try and poach some of that custom. The pub was nicely decorated and the staff friendly. The food was OK but the beer was in very poor condition - maybe a turnover problem? The overall experience, balancing the good and the not so good, was three stars out of five = distinctly average.
