The Start in Middlesbrough

After swearing not to eat here again I ended up doing so the other day as my university friends insisted the food was nice. I should have trusted my gut after the last time I was there and received a bland dry veggie burger with no salad or sauce. They ordered a full English and the bacon was undercooked, they said their sausages were poor quality and the ‘toast’ was basically warm bread. One friend ordered a cappuccino which was lumpy and undrinkable. I ordered a tuna panini which was actually a disgusting tuna baguette which the baguette was soggy and warm not even crispy and it was covered in a thick layer of cheap minging cheese. The only good side was my pint was a good pour. Safe to say I’m 100% not wasting my money they on food again and I doubt my friends will either

30 foreigners without a drink between them and had to go elsewhere to watch the footy. 4 of us who like a beer cannot spend our own money here..

Went to the star on Sunday for the carvery and to be fair what excellent value for money it was!! 2 meats for £7 veg was lovely all fresh and home made 😃 meat was delicious couldn’t fault the place my only one tiny whinge was that it could do with being a few degrees hotter as it goes cold quickly but really enjoyed it and the price is great we had 3 dinners with 2 meats and a gin and 2 soft drinks for £25 which is absolutely excellent value for money 😄 would highly recommend

Went for Sunday lunch and was really disappointed. As this use to be a regular place I used to visit every Sunday and it was really nice then. Beef was really chewy none if use ate it apart from my cats! Peas where rock hard, really not nice again none of us ate them either, Mash was lumpy and tasteless. And when I ordered a coffee it was like dishwater. Cabbage was lovely. sorry for giving bad review but I needs to be stepped up for it to continue to maintain customers. No visible baby changing area either. Toilets are bit minging too. I will not be returning nor will my friends.

I was desperate for the loo and I went in and a rude member of staff stopped me and asked me to buy some thing but he was nasty and Judy towards me and made me feel like a criminal I wouldn't mind paying but their not even good toilets and I had to buy £1:20 Crisp witch is quite expensive for crisp especially when you aren't wanting them not only that the dryer in the toilets would take years to actually dry your hands I never wanted to complain but it's been a few times mostly later on that people treat and act different in their.

I suggested this pub to a fellow student and we went for lunch during a lecture break. We were told of a 20 minute wait for food. My friend ordered hers and I straight after. Her food came and I was sat waiting and waiting... I had to tell the bar lad that I needed to take the food out as I didn’t have time to eat it if I sat in... the food arrived and the chicken burger was plain, no salad in the burger no dressing. I then left the star with the chips in the box and as I walked over to class looked into the box and in mixed with my chips was curly fries with tomato sauce, I didn’t put any sauce on the chips or ordered curly fries, Did the lads just give me someone’s else’s food ? , just purely disgusting! Disappointed!

It was a lovely bank holiday Sunday, I went to the Star to enjoy a few nice cold beers with friends. My pint was flat, when I asked at the bar if I could change it the response from staff was "What do you want me to do?". I just wanted the pint exchanging for a fresh one but they were incapable of sorting such a simple problem showing a disgraceful attitude. Will eat and drink elsewhere in future not a problem.

A great place for a cheap and cheerful home cooked carvery we love it here and even went for Christmas Day

I always thought that roast potatoes were cooked in an oven and not deep fried ! That aside we had to wait 15 minutes while the chef prepared his under cooked Yorkshire puddings and made the veggies even colder. Chef was too busy drinking his pint to even check what he was serving but made every effort to tell waiting customers how good he was. Ate two or three bits of meat, one bit of mash, a bit of cold veg and then left. As did the other four people in our group. Never again.

Went here Sunday with my family for the first time after hearing really good things, safe to say I wasn't disappointed the food was beautiful! They even had a smaller plate for my 3 year old as he's not a big eater and only cost £2! Very impressed! Will certainly be visiting again and will recommend!

Went with some friends for a pre night out meal for my boyfriends birthday. Every order came out together except one and they had to wait 20 minutes to get their food - I went to the bar to ask where it was and no one came to serve me - and when it came the order was wrong and the waiter decided to argue with my friend saying it was what he ordered when it wasn't. I also ordered a veggie burger which was fried veg in bread crumbs. It would have been nice with salad and sauce but it was literally just that in a bun. Very disappointed since I don't like meat and that was one of the only veggie options on there. I wouldn't order from there again.

Great way to spend your Sunday with a carvery from the Star, 4 choices of meats and all the vegetables you can eat accompanied Thick gravy.

Having waited for 45 minutes our food eventually arrived stone cold and congealed, with no apology from the staff when we complained, they very reluctantly gave us a refund. Not impressed and still hungry !

Absolutely shocking service waited for 40 minutes for food then came out stone cold the place is un clean and the staff are less than helpful

Went to get lunch today with my family who are visiting and had to wait for 40 minutes to get our food only to receive it stone cold and still missing one of the burgers that was ordered. When we said the food was cold the bad mannered employee was reluctant to give us a refund and was rude when we stated that we didn't want the food to be recooked as we had already waited 40 minutes and didn't want to wait any longer. They gave the excuse of there is only one chef in today but other tables received their food before us even though they had ordered a long time after us.

Acabo de graduar de Teesside uni. Preferido, ir a cenar cada semana con un amigo. Bebidas baratas, gran ambiente, la comida increíble. El personal es agradable y amable.

Had a carvery here last sunday after it was recomended to us by a friend.The food was very good and very reasonably priced too. Good choice of beers and some drinks offers aswell.Overall a no frills help yourself town pub we'll be back.

Ample seating in or out, clean loos, good selection of beers and lagers...not to mention the spirits and an amazing £2.00 a pint offer throughout the week.We ordered the Parmasan with curly chips....brilliant flavour, good portions and nice surroundings...a newly developed Campus Heart (so we were informed)

As a student at Teesside University you can imagine that we visit the pubs on Southfield road on a weekly basis. The star is by far my favourite. The parmos here are one of the best ive tasted in my life. The other food on the menu is amazing. Especially the pizzas and chunky homemade chips. typical pub grub. Order at bar and food is brought over.One downside to The Star is that the Cutlery is disgusting. Never in my life have I seen such dirty knifes and forks. When myself and 2 friends go for lunch we always grab 6-7 sets of cutlery and mix+match the clean ones. The cutlery is so distgusting but the food is so good we have been tempted to bring our own cutlery!Will worthy of 5/6 star.

Went to get something to eat on Sunday 15 May husband doesn't like Sunday dinner so asked for a menu it's only carvery I asked do you have a vegetarian option yes just take the meat of how is that a vegetarian option. The staff was very rude and not helpful. First and last time to vist.

Been hear a few times and have alway enjoyed what I have ordered. The food is presented and cooked well. The only downside I have is that it can be expensive depending on what you order.

We came here to meet up and have a family meal, mid-week. The food was excellent value for money as it was homemade and plentiful. The chips were homemade and not frozen and the salad was crisp and fresh. However, I was disappointed earlier this evening when we went for tea, only to be told that they had run out of food. We certainly are planning to eat here again, as it is excellent value for money.We have also visited the Star for Sunday lunch when there is a carvery on offer, it is very difficult to get a seat because it is so busy. The lunch however is a bit hit and miss depending on when you dine, but then again it is still good for the amount you pay for it. The only real issue I have is that the bar man does not always serve the people who are queuing, but those that join the queue from the other end or push into it.
