Madame Rouge in Middlesbrough

My first time being here, and experiencing Middleborough life. Menu could be written to say which is vegetarian, the Mac&Cheese had small pieces of bacon in it, not good if you don't eat meat, but overall we all had a good time, lovely people and good service.

Lovely meal. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Had a great chat. Highly recommend. Garlic mushrooms starter is amazing 👏 😍. Main meal lovely, no room for a dessert 😋 Will definitely go back xxx

Tried to call to answer. But my mam brought my a take away roast home. I opened the 2 boxes and got 2 slices of beef, a slop of mash what looked like someone's left overs and puds. NO veg! About 10ml of gravy. Such a spoiler to be receiving a Sunday lunch like that.

What an absolute gem of a place. Finally got round to visiting after following it on Facebook and didn’t disappoint. Started as a drop in drink but settling into such a welcoming and comfortable environment progressed to a lovely afternoon of drinks/food and excellent service. Will be back soon.

Went for Sunday lunch on Father's Day and have to say it's probably the worst roast dinner I've ever had. They have used a Frozen pork loin joint and then cut the slices so thin, you could practically see through them. They have then cooked these again and the pork was so dry and tough. It came with crackling which was so rubbery and tasted like it was days old. Most of the veg was in tiny quinels with a couple of poor roast potatoes. The Yorkshire pudding was also frozen. Very poor. The food would have been 1 star but I gave it an extra star as the Pate was nice but it came with no salad and not enough bread.

We booked a table for 5 people, the place looked nice, we wanted to change tables as we where in the way of people passing continuously, we were told we couldn't we ordered some drinks a member of the staff came to get our order as we were having afternoon tea she went to ask us if we wanted sandwiches or wraps, as we never being, we asked her what kind of sandwiches was on offer, she rudely pointed to one of the manu that she took from one of us, the afternoon tea then came in 2 tiered baskets, she explained that in each one was to share between us, instead of individual ones, the sandwiches were in a very small piece of bread, gem lettuce leave and some topping, the small wraps again very small the chips was the only saving grace delicious, the desert was served in a slate plate, with 2 scones cut into 4?, a chocolate cake cut into several pieces, and a cheesecake again cut into several pieces, the scones were rock hard or maybe a few days old, definitely not good value for money, as we paid over £150. Pounds to still be left feeling hungry, we would not come back or recommend the place.

Attended for first time with friends (3 of us in total) for afternoon tea. Menu on their website is different to in the shop as were prices. The ordering experience was bizarre, owner came over asking what drink I wanted, gave my cocktail order (explained I would be having that as part of afternoon tea with cocktail). He walked off to say one of the girls will take the order (had pen & paper in his hand though…). A young lady of staff came over but only took my drink order…. Eventually after 35 mins we got to pace to the food order… it’s different to the menu advertised. We all had same open sandwiches - ham, mature cheese & mustard and egg mayo with avocado except 1 person asked for avocado to be left off. When it arrived you couldn’t tell what was what with the wrap sandwiches, and avocado had been left off all the egg sandwiches, so when we queried this the manager (well think he was the manager) just huffed, shouted at the girl who was behind the counter in front of all the customers in there, grabbed the plate and said I’ll get them to add avocado and snapped at us that with the wraps the one with some breadcrumbs was obviously the southern fried chicken one (it looked identical to the Cajun chicken. The ham & mature cheddar… no mustard to be found and wasn’t mature cheddar at all, more like a Swiss mild cheese complete with the holes you get in that type of cheese. Will say the chips were delicious though and very fresh. Be warned the open sandwiches are all on little gem lettuce leaves which get put on a huge chunk of bloomer type bread… about 2 inches thick & high and covered in mayo. We left most of the bread as it’s far too much for the topping you get and wasn’t that nice. Overall you get far too much on the savoury part of the tea. I’d have quite happily had the little gem lettuce leaves with the topping on as they are and then say a couple of thinner slices of the bread so you could have some on their own and some with bread. For what we all left could’ve made up another persons sandwiches part of the tea. I wonder if they waste a lot of bread? My friend finally got the tea for her meal when the desserts came out after asking for it twice. The desserts were nice but again just bizarre, there was a scone sliced in 3 widthways, a small piece of brownie in 3 pieces, a slice of carrot cake (this was comical as it was literally 1 normal slice then another really small one in which the top & bottom had been separated to be 2 slices… I got the top bit 😊…), then a biscoff cheesecake that had been mangled into 2.5 slices. Clotted cream with scones was very nice, thickest I’ve ever seen tbh. The jam was the individual plastic packs from lichfield cash & carry brand which was sour and just tasted off, afternoon tea is meant to be a bit of a treat/luxury. Every other afternoon tea I’ve ever had was a portion of jam in a dish with a teaspoon, that would be tastier and cheaper. Inside the place is lovely, but we couldn’t relax as the manager again kept walking up & down the restaurant, glared at both parties sat by the window, then looked outside and then peered over at both parties again to see where they were at before huffing & walking off, rinse and repeat every few mins, it was really uncomfortable and you don’t feel welcome or like they want your business to be honest. It’s just not a welcoming place and the service is all over the place. I really felt for the young lady working as the manager was shouting lots and being very unprofessional. They add service charge to the bill without asking and then tried to charge us twice for the cocktails included with the 2 teas that came with cocktail. So make sure to double check before you pay, they did allow us to pay separate bills by card. You can get better priced and much tastier afternoon teas in other venues, so I’d not return for afternoon tea here. They also do bottomless brunch and tapas and then Sunday dinners.

So came here for a couple night out. Service from staff lovely. The owner was rude arrogant and he disciplined his staff infront of customers (us) and then swore. I found blue roll in my food. I asked him to come over. I showed him the blue roll. He huffed pulled my plate away and said I’ll sort it. My husband said is that all u r going to say. He said I’ll take it off the bill. I said so along with disciplining your staff in front of customers you are rude. He totally ignored us and walked off. I spoke to another member of staff and she apologised on his behalf. I said it’s not your fault. He wouldn’t give us eye contact while we remained there. Needless to say I won’t be giving them my custom again! Zoom in to the picture

Came here for Sunday lunch and felt that the food was overpriced for what it was. There was very little children’s options for any of the kids who wouldn’t want a dinner. The food itself wasn’t of great quality. The roasties were frozen aunt Bessie types and not overly tasty. The desert - one of our party had their desert missing and when it came it was half the size of what everyone else had gotten. It just didn’t feel value for money. The service itself was poor and I’m not sure if it was the waitresses first day but she really didn’t have a clue. All in all not a great experience.

Popped into this lovely tearoom whilst I was waiting for my daughter. I was immediately greeted by a member of staff who was very polite and showed me to a table and gave me a menu. I opted for cheesy chips and a fruit scone with jam. Food didn't take long to arrive and was very nice. The venue itself was well presented and very quiet on arrival but started filling up as teatime neared. I would recommend to others and would visit again for a proper meal with family/friends.

Madame Rouge, home of the lumpy pina colada that you're told "definitely won't kill you".. Mmm lumpy.. LMAO. The owners' response .. What a joke! There was literal chunks of curdled coconut milk in the cocktail and they're claiming it was from the "Fresh Pineapple". Well, funny you say it's the "Pineapple" as the wait staff admitted it was from the canned coconut milk.

I went here last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food and service was excellent. Best steak for a while.Well worth the walk from the town centre.

Best Carbonara I've ever had tbh, my only issue is that on an evening then clientele are a bit chavy, tracksuits, puffa jackets and such, it's a smart place, clients should be turned away if they aren't smartly dressed imo.

Food and drinks were lovely, atmosphere and the place itself was amazing. However I visited here on Mother’s Day, so we did catch them on a busy day. Taking that into consideration we were seated fairly quickly and given drinks and our first part of the afternoon tea within reasonable time. Servers didn’t bring out the second part of our afternoon tea and actually forgot about it until we mentioned. Servers handled this amazingly though. However when enquiring about the bill, was spoken too very aggressively/rudely by the bartender who ended up slamming the bill on the table and walking away after talking over me and raising his voice. Rest of the staff were great, especially the manager who apologised. Think the bar tender should consider a job that’s not in customer service 🙃

We had booked afternoon tea for 2:30 and arrived shortly before. We ended up waiting in the entrance with groups of other people who had booked and did not got seated until well after this time. It appeared they had overbooked as we overhead tables saying that staff had cleared drinks and food before they were finished and were repeatedly asking if they were ready to pay after they had already said they were not. Once we were sat we overheard a table next to us complain that they were out of both wraps and fries, what makes up the majority of the afternoon tea. We then proceeded to wait half an hour without a being given a menu before we decided to leave. Suffice to say it was not the experience we expected.

went for mother's day what a disappointment place was filthy 2 of the women's toilets over flowing with sick in them, floors and table covered in food and the upstairs had layered dust on the balcony not talking a weeks worth but months. soft drinks flat sent back, waited 50mins for a highchair had to ask 3 times. 40mins for two waters, then the starters came out 2 of the starters sent back twice as cold in the middle so canceled them, soup of the day vegetable soup had bones in it thank god I wasn't vegan or allergic. manager was rude not interested in the issues in the end canceled the rest of the meal and went elsewhere every table had an issue. really need health inspectors to take a visit

There were 21 of us celebrating a friends 30th we had the best night!!! The staff couldn’t do enough for us the food was excellent and drinks flowed They let us complete our “dares” and never complained when we were up and about Thank you so much ❤️

Came on a Saturday 2 weeks before Christmas not enough room between the bar and tables and waited 20 mins to pay because the staff couldn't find the card machine, staff arguing, awful place.

What a gorgeous place. Came here for a meal with friends. Food was absolutely delicious especially the lasagne. So welcoming and friendly. The owner brougt us some shots and thaked us for choosing his restaurant. Geat atmosphere and we will definitely be back. Thank you for a lovely evening

We decided to try a local business as we were waiting for our daughte. The atmosphere and decor was lovely. We ordered coffee and wanted a simple cake. The choice was very limited not even a cheese scone was in stock were offered the evening dessert menu which we didn't fancy. We decided to have the sweet scone with jam and cream which was ok. I thought the price for two scones and two coffees at £19.99 was very expensive especially in Middlesbrough and at lunch time too. Coffee price was ok £3 each but the scone was but two scones were £11.90. II feel the price was expensive especially as there is a Spoons next door too. Won't be going back very soon very disappointed as had high hopes for it too.

Fantastic night we came here for our Xmas works party night unbelievable food service was 5 star too there was a large group but drinks were flowing food was all piping hot and delicious too Would definitely recommend anyone to go there I definitely will be back soon with the girls over Xmas

Needed to add a proper review as not only was the food amazing and prices damn reasonable, the staff are AH-mayzing. Went above and beyond for us on a busy Saturday lunch time and I couldn't have been more impressed. The yard stick by which all food service should be judged.

If I could I would give it a 0 , had a baby shower booked for nearly 3 months to be told not even a week before that I couldn't have the exclusivity of upstairs for my baby shower , manager extremely rude and dismissive to the fact they was busy , not my fault you clearly over booked, absolutely disgraceful !!!!! Treat your customers better , just money greedy .

Went for baby shower paid 15.95 for half a slice of bread with topping a slice of Parmesan 1 inch wide 3 inches long and half a bowl of chips between 4 people. Total rip off this was not what menu option 2 stated Then there was our drinks on top of this huge profit for them off 43 people 😡😡 this was today 29th october

my first and last visit, Way over priced, food was nothing special, staff are rude Not all but definitely two were, the rest were lovely, I certainly won't be going back, we were there as a group and one waitress made it clear she didnt like us which really made an uncomfortable stay, it's okay we don't need you to like us but try and not display you're dislike to costumers, whatever happening in your life try not bring it to work. The owner was lovely and welcoming if not sure how to do your job then just follow his lead.

Visited for breakfast on a Saturday morning. Plenty of different options available and the food was very nice. The barman even went out to get a dairy free milk alternative for my partner when they didn't have any.

Wow, this place is amazing. We were a table of 5, had bottomless brunch… the drinks kept flowing, the food was lovely. The service was faultless, very attentive. The music & sax made it even better. It’s such a shame, there’s not more places around like this one. We will certainly return. Keep up the good work M.R 😍

Really nice decor. Friendly staff. Music on a Saturday evening was a little loud so that it was hard to hear much conversation (but that's to be expected in most places on a Sat eve). There were some slightly quieter areas toward the back. Also beautifully decorated. Prices about average for a High St themed venue. Main toilets upstairs. Accessible toilet downstairs (the obligatory mop, brush, high chair etc is stored in there, so if you use a wheelchair you may want to ask them to free up some space) In theory you could access this venue with a wheelchair although it may be a bit awkward at busy times because the venue is quite long and narrow (to an extent).

Been looking forward to visiting and it did not disappoint. Had the lunch menu and food was lovely, service was quick. Will definitely be back for cocktails and tapas and brunch another time. And whoever designed the interior needs a pay rise! It’s gorgeous 😍

As a group of 5 friends, this was the first time we had booked a table here. We booked on a Saturday early evening. On entry the decor is lovely and from the outside, it is quite deceiving as it's huge inside. It was packed with hen parties and large groups. On top of that noise, they had a live artist, which was good, but the noise level was just too much. A waitress took our drink order and she was clueless as to what gin they had, so she then had to go downstairs and look. It took 45 min for us to receive 4/5's of our drinks - during that time they came to the table 3 times, and each time they brought the wrong drink and were corrected. They then took our food order which was 3 paninis, vegan gnocchi and an afternoon tea. After 1 hour and a half, we finally received the final drink which was ordered and the food. The vegan meal received garlic bread sticks which had butter on them, my friend is lactose intolerant this is why the vegan meal was ordered. After deliberating with the server this was corrected. The afternoon tea did not come with a cup of tea or the sweet options, we were told this was to come after?! Usually, afternoon tea is presented with finger sandwiches, savoury and sweet options on the stand. We then had to wait another 30mins for this After getting the bill at the end they charged us for a second round of drinks and added the incorrect drinks that they had tried to serve us earlier. We won't be returning again.

Food and drink were pretty good, but the food and drink menus were empty and the waiters came by constantly asking us if we wanted drinks.

Our second time visiting and it didn't disappoint. The service here is excellent. Massimo spends time checking on the customers, as do his staff. We ordered Swiss Cheese Burgers and shared the Biscoff Cheesecake. Both delicious. Food, service and atmosphere excellent. We'll be back again soon.

First visit here today, we went for afternoon tea. One of the best afternoon teas I've had, and the best value. Had a choice of sandwiches and wraps, plus fries, and cakes, scones and hot cross buns. Really delicious, would definitely visit again. Staff are lovely and friendly too. 😊

A totally different venue in the 'Boro. In with my wife, we just had drinks(to get the feel of the place), one side three girls having a cream tea, the other side four people having cocktails. Atmosphere good, service quick, a tad expensive 🤔, possibly. But saying all that, will I be back again? Absolutely.

We had high hopes of this place but sadly we ended up walking out an hour after our booking had commenced. We arrived at 2pm, which was when our table was booked for, and, perhaps the first red flag, the waiter who served us struggled to read the table number reserved for us (it was 1, so I have no idea why he said that). Anyway he gave us a table out the back which we were over the moon with. Really great decor and super lovely interior. Anyway said waiter asked if we would like water for the table - we said yes. We’re still waiting for it to arrive. 15-20 mins go by and no one comes back at all. Eventually we order drinks; two cocktails and two tea/coffee. The cocktails arrive 20 mins later and again, we’re still waiting for the tea and coffee. Eventually we call over one of the waiters who tells me ‘1 second’ and then AGAIN, I’m still waiting for him to come back. Another of the waiters, an older man, eventually comes over when we call, we’re about 50 mins into our booking now. My mother asks him when we order food how long will it be. His response was ‘how long will what be, Madame?’ And again, she explains the food. He explains he can’t say, he doesn’t know if there’s a hold up (obviously there is, mate - otherwise I wouldn’t still be waiting for my mam and dads tea and coffee). He states ‘it’s our busiest day’. He then proceeds to ask us what we’d like to order and you can see he’s doing this only because we’ve asked how long food would be. He seems very pressed. It’s at this point I said I think we should leave. The waiters only response was ‘it’s our busiest day’. I’m not even sure he apologised. His attitude only makes me assume he meant ‘it’s our busiest day - what do you expect?’. We were quite astounded as our experience is literally the opposite of every review I’ve read, As we leave a younger gentleman, the man who runs it I presume (from the gazette photos) comes over and says sorry, again explains how busy it is and offers us a free round of drinks. Naturally we decline and tell him we would have just liked our expectations to have been set from when we got here. We left, they covered the price of the two cocktails we ordered. We went to Baker Street Kitchen and while it was a toro ally different environment, it was nice to be met with actual service and to not be forgotten about. In Madame rouge we sat there like ghosts. We were walked boast numerous times and felt like we were just being ignored completely. While we can appreciate a busy day of service what we can’t appreciate is completely being forgotten about. Massive let down.

First visit today and it won't be my last. What a lovely place. Very ornate and quirky inside. Had breakfast of Eggs Benedict and delicious coffee. The staff were so pleasant, especially Massimo who welcomed us as soon as we entered. Great range of food for breakfast, lunch and tea and at reasonable prices. Looking forward to our next visit.

Unfriendly staff and a limited menu

The atmosphere itself was actually pretty good. However, I would recommend that the menu and prices be checked prior to ordering. Overcharged and underdelivered on the food and drink on the day. £25 afternoon tea for 2 should not mean that we get charged over £50. Food portions were reasonable but the food was taken away before we were finished with it. It just felt like they were trying to rush us out of the venue. They need to improve their service provision before I would remotely consider updating or changing my review.

I would advice anyone going here to read the menu carefully, they have hidden fees, what was supposed to be a 25 for 2 became £65. They also took away food rudely without asking if we were done with food. And staff were immediately argumentative over the price as if they were actively scamming us. DO NOT GO AT ANY COST.

My advice for any one who want to try somewhere new, be ready to lose a decently large amount of money especially as a group. First walking in to Madame rouge the atmosphere is really nice and comforting with a homely design and cushions on the booth side. We where seated at a table and given menus like any normal restaurant. Ordering the afternoon tea we thought that with cocktails would be enough for the two of us to share. However many thing went wrong during our experience there. First off they gave me the completely wrong drink nothing a like to what I had asked for. We also only got to look at the menu once before we ordered and it was taken away completely, aside for the drinks menu meaning we could not check any of the prices again. Another thing is that the menu is only accessible in the restaurant, so if you have anxiety or are indecisive you better be ready for 1 or 2 minutes alone with said menu to decide on what you want and tell the staff that will keep hovering around. They will also come sit beside you and try to have conversations whether you are comfortable or not. We enjoyed our savoury portion of the meal with no complications. But the desert half we had an issue yet again as one of the servers took the food before we where even finished with it, and without asking he picked it up and left. After not being able to finish we ordered one more drink each, finished then asked for the bill. That is when we get to the biggest problem, we did not see the menu again but apparently we where told that it was £25 for each person. So instead of thinking we where getting a decent amount of food for the price, we got severally overcharged. having to pay a lot more than we where expecting. We where not shown the menu again to see where it said £25 per person or anything. We believed that what we got was not worth £50 at all. I could of had the exact same meal made at home and not have to fork out a lot of cash for what I did get to eat in the end. Over all my experience was absolutely atrocious and was not worth the price for such a small and low quality amount of food. I will not be returning or recommending this to any of my friends going forward.

I’ve been following their Instagram since they opened. We came in for lunch, today. Greeted at the door and seated straight away. The waiter offered us water while we perused the menus. I ordered the egg majo open sandwich and my husband ordered the coronation chicken open sandwich. Both delicious. We also had a portion of chips which came with two dips. After our food, we decided to stay a while and ordered cocktails. The atmosphere, wonderful decor, attention to detail, the service and especially the family history really make this place. Love it and we will be back. Well done to Massimo and his team.

Firstly, they served water (right at the begining) which I did not see anywhere in the UK , until now. Five stars to that. Then the chef was so considerate, he made everything veg as was asked for + made those sandwiches with different flavours and ingredients. Staff was friendly enough, space is cozy and nice. We asked for an afternoon tea which comes with coffe/ tea, sandwiches, cake, scones, etc. Nicely served. I personally really liked the jalapeno sandwich. Definitely going again, with more friends 😌

Just been in and eaten here, food delicious, staff very friendly and music spot on if you're into Soul x Highly recommend you pay a visit.
