Costa coffee in Middlesbrough

In what world is it ok to serve cake and coffee in takeaway cups and bags with wooden cutlery while charging proper money? Eating carrot cake off a paper bag on a mucky table with a wooden fork is the epitome of scum. See depressing pic.

Arrived very early for an outpatient appointment at James Cook University Hospital today and thought I'd get a drink and wait here but it was so crowded and noisy that I couldn't face it. I kept on walking and proceeding along the Orange Route I came across The Hideaway Coffee Shop, which was indeed hidden away behind the Rendezvous Restaurant and mainly frequented by hospital staff. Although a bit run down and scruffy in parts, I got both a mug of tea and a nice slice of Victoria Sponge for the same price as a cup of average Costa coffee. The cheese scones looked nice and homemade, while fruit scones had sold out. I enjoyed sitting outside in the courtyard area and arrived nicely refreshed for my appointment.

Always crazy busy but staff still keep smiling Consistently good coffee no matter what you choose Good toasties and snacks The staff are hysterical. Always make me smile

I bought chicken wrap and I found 2 bones in it. Never buying food from there.

Called in to have a coffee and cake treat. We had two coffees which were fine as you would expect and two Bakewell tarts and this is where it all went wrong. What on earth have Costa done to these tarts. They used to have nice soft icing and cake and tangy jam. What we were served was a slither of pastry with some cake crumbs and a disc of fondant icing stuck on top. Totally foul with no taste and for the cost never again!!

Overpriced, poor quality, long queue, slow staff. Don’t go there - instead there is a large staff restaurant and a coffee lounge just along the corridor which is much much better.

No food for coeliac’s at all Vegans - their own choice- get catered for

Ordered a small latte.... nothing like a latte. Very strong cup of coffee.... hardly any milk in with the coffee.... waist of money again.

Visited and had a sausage sandwich and small latte price was £7.65. Expensive compared to other Costas. Won’t be visiting again at that price.

I went in to buy a latte and two teas , I asked for a cup for my 97 yr old mother as she can’t hold a paper cup . The counter girl mumbled we don’t have cups , I said there are some there and there . The dishwasher is broken . I replied it is one cup to wash . Well you can’t have one we just do paper cups . I insisted she replied will have to ask manager , well please do !!! A woman dragged herself out of the office stood and said who wants a cup , I do , we don’t do cups !! What’s those there , my mother who is a patient within the hospital was getting visibly upset at this stage , said we will just leave . No we won’t . Eventually the “ manager” said give her a cup and walked her way back to her office. Will never go in again . That is not how you treat customers !!

Came in, and saw this gentleman order a mocha, he clearly stated that he wanted an oat mocha, the lady making it was horrendous, she had called his order out with such an horrendous attitude (all because it was oat milk and not normal milk), and even after he had said thank you, she gave him the dirtiest look ever. I immediately turned and left. I won't be going there again. Please retrain your staff on customer standards and maybe some diversity training as well.

What an environmental shame to give everyone a disposable cup! Bot even asked if we were staying in.

Very poor service. Bought a coffee and within 1 minute accidentally spilled it everywhere. Felt so bad and clean it all immediately. Was never offered a new coffee or the chance to buy again (as I would have). Line was then round the corner and couldn’t wait again. Come almost daily as I work in the hospital and staff recognise me. Disappointing and won’t come back. Considering it is £4 a coffee and it costs them practically nothing.

Waste of space. Its either closed or closing early or has poor stock levels Might as well put another bunch in there that'll provide a service.

I feel this review is needed after having to be in hospital for quite some time, costa rapidly became my little retreat. The guys here have been fantastic showing me kindness and compassion exactly when I needed it Alex, Hayden, Jake are the dream team in my opinion and Natalie has a gorgeous smile 😊 I almost forgot Kirsty who give me hope and reassurance just when I needed it 😍

I have never met a friendlier group of staff. Very jolly and interactive with customers whilst also very efficient in their roles. Whilst waiting i couldn't help but witness how they helped the elderly and parents with children to find seating and bring their purchases to their table. Above and beyond in my eyes. Well done to you all, you know who you are 🙂

Poorly stocked, terrible customer service, rude and surly staff. You would expect they would realise in a hospital setting their customers might need extra friendliness but no, these were the rudest Costa staff I’ve ever come across, including both staff and the supervisor. Was in the hospital for three days and they upset me so much I refused to give them any more business.

Currently here daily atm with my daughter, staff are lovely and helpful nothings a bother, good banter and the coffee not bad either!!

Hours state opening till 4pm on a Sunday. Before visiting my partner today I went to get him a Costa 2.45pm and woman behind counter shouted closed as I walked in. No reason as to why and very rude.

I come here with my dad every 2 days as hes staying in hospital, and we both agreed that one of the waiters (male) makes the best drinks, expecially mine 😊 no offence to the other waiters, we just prefer his. But good services thanks yous lot x

Very welcome sight in James Cook Hospital. Seating available but all food and drink in takeaway containers. Unusually quiet so service very quick. Had two flat whites, a bacon roll and carrot cake, all delicious. At Costa you know what to expect

A life saver when having to visit the hospital. Usual great coffee but with the added bonus of everything being half price (if you eat in) thanks to the Governments scheme. Staff very welcoming and helpful as usual.

No notice it was closing at 3pm

Ordered a ham and cheese sandwich yuk the ham looked like spam and both it and the cheese was wafer thin with no butter and cost £4

Visited great Costa within the James Cook Hospital twice durin my partners stay. Nice to.have some normality within the hospital setting. A nice place to take a patient away from the ward for a treat. Staff were friendly & helpful.

This place is a bit hit and miss depending on how busy it is but the staff are always pleasant. Sometimes they are long queues but you get decent standard Costa refreshments to take away or eat in

If you like coffee then you can't really go wrong with Costa Coffee, overpriced but then so are most coffee shops.

Usual Costa fare which is good however what is wrong with the staff here!!! I’m all for having fun in the workplace but NOT when customers are impacted greatly. The ONLY member of staff that was lovely and professional was Deb.....as for the rest.......they think it’s ok to shout across the work station how many hours they have left/chat to each other and when doing so they stop and I mean literally stop what they are doing/orders are wrong constantly as they are just not concentrating on the job. Shame on the manager for allowing their staff to carry on like this...this is a hospital where people have bad news/deaths etc and these ‘professionals’ think it’s ok to scream at the top of their voices!

Over the last three weeks, a difficult time for my family, Costa Coffee staff have been efficient and so kind and helpful. Be proud Costa!

Round about 6.00pm so had to have drinks in takeaway cups ,and no ice available, presume they were getting ready to close. Coffee was up to usual standard and staff friendly enough.

One display case had crumbs lying around and very little else except a tray of biscuits .... no serviettes .... made the coffee and then went and put the toastie cooking ... suppose to ensure my coffee is cold by the time the sandwich arrives .. why not the other way round. Below the coffee machine just a huge pile of coffee overspill ... all pretty scruffy. Staff member off hand.

By day there is always a big queue but staff are friendly and helpful. Same food as everywhere else but tends to run out of stuff as it's so busy. Difficult to get phone signal inside, you need to sit round the outside. Free WiFi restricted to about 40mins

The usual Costa fair but the behaviour of the four staff serving was very poor. Gossiping & complaining about not being allowed to leave early. Customers having to wait whilst these conversations were played out.... really poor impression. Glad they don’t work for me.......

Well i would just like to say ,we have been going here almost every day for the past 4weeks .Would like to thank ALL the staff especially Claire and Beth for being so polite and caring,at a time thats been really awful for us .They were so busy sometimes the quews were in the corridor they apologised to customers saying sorry for the wait and they would be as quick as the could Couldnt fault them as they very busy and under pressure to get customers served .Well done all of you xxx

Great addition to James Cook Hospital which is why it is always busy do you usually have to queue. Can get everything that's available in other Costa. Don't have machine for points app need to use Costa card. Staff always friendly and polite

Great to have Costa within James Cook hospital, especially as it's open till 8pm when the other cafes are closed.Usual Costa drinks and foodStaff are friendly and always carry tray to table when I've been unable too.Often long queues during daytime but much quieter in the evening

Had to visit this Costa as family were at the hospital. Well surprised, as the friendliness, cleanliness and quality were the same as any other Costa Coffee, didn't expect this in the hospital, well done and thank you.

No complaints except that even though I was sitting inside I had to have the coffee and food in takeaway containers, presumably because it was getting close to closing time i.e. About 7pm

Visited here on 9th February.I was early for my outpatients appointment so had a quickish hot chocolate with cream in the hospitals Costa.The staff were very pleasant and the service really good,They even brought it over to my table as i have a leg injury needing crutches.However i have drunk better hot chocolate in my time,there was not a lot of cream and i judge £3.05 for a regular hot chocolate to be far too expensive

Use Costa Regularly but bit disappointed today, tried the Salted Caramel Cappuccino which Is extremely sweet so who knows how many calories is in it. Egg mayo sarnie, egg is sliced not mashed. Very Busy but Staff were friendly and efficient.

A very busy coffee shop with the expected and usual fare for a Costs Coffee shop. The thing that set this apart today was the attitude and diligence of the staff! Well done all of you!
