I had about five rum and cokes but didn't feel particularly affected by them. I'm not suggested they had been watered down but they definitely tasted on the cheap (and not very nice) side. The music level was a bit annoying. I was hoping to get a bit of a dance floor going, but the music was never loud enough for that to happen. I had to keep requesting for them to put it up but it was never much beyond background music level. So it wasn't bad, but these things definitely stopped it from being great.

One person received their burger 10 minutes after ordering and the rest of us received our food 25 minutes after that, leaving us in a rush to eat in order to get back to the office. Three of us ordered the vegetarian sausage burger – but only one was given the guacamole topping. When we asked about this, the burgers without guac were taken away for 10 minutes rather than just have the topping added. We weren't kept informed about why our food was taking so long, despite being one of only three parties in the pub. The food was tasty and well presented, but unevenly heated - some of the chips were already cold. So all in all, pretty poor service, we were not impressed.

The "Star of Kings" had been brought to my attention through a couple of social media sites as they offered the trending Yeah! Burgers, which I had enjoyed at a Pop up stall a few years ago. I decided to come here with a group of friends to celebrate my birthday. At first glance, the location was good (local to me), the place had a good atmosphere, it looked very lively and lacked lighting. Next to us was another large group who occupied the table to our left who were not only taking up a large amount of space but had taken our end chairs to accommodate their 'large party'. While it wasn’t a major issue, it took awhile for the staff to bring us extra chairs and we ended up having to shove our table closer to the entrance to squeeze in both groups. As for the food, I had looked at the online menu prior to arriving, as I like to get a feel for what I'm ordering when I decide to try out new places. In my head I had chosen to order 1) Yeah! Burger 2) Chicken Wings 3) Chorizo Scotch Egg. However, when looking through the physical menu, I was unable to find the chicken wings anywhere - it turns our they no longer served them so they removed it from the sit down menu but not online. No big deal.. remove number 2 off the list, I've still got enough to fulfil the rest of my order right?! Actually no! What’s more is that they also had no chorizo scotch eggs available. So I ended up ordering just a Yeah! Burger with extra bacon and cheesy fries. When the food arrived, the chips were warm bridging on cold and tasted microwaved. The burger was ok, nothing standout, definitely lacking in Yeah! sauce. It felt like I was given a sample size which had just dropped on my burger - it might as well have not been on there as I couldn’t taste it. On the flip side, a friend of mine ordered the Elvis burger which I managed to have a taste of and was surprisingly very tasty, if I were to recommend anything from here it would be the Elvis Burger. The last unfortunate event which is probably the reason why I won't be coming back here anytime soon is that another friend of mine ordered a double patty Yeah! burger with no cheese (as he has allergies to cheese). Early on there was signs of trouble as there was an initial delay with his order and when it finally arrived, what do you know.. they had not listened and messed it up by adding cheese to the burger.. naturally he complained about and it was sent back straightaway. He was told by the bar staff that they would make a new one. An hour and a half in and still waiting.. when everyone else had finished their food, my friend was still waiting for his replacement burger. He questioned the staff about it and they were not being overly helpful at this stage and could not inform him where his order was. At the 2 hour mark, he gave up and asked one last time where his burger was.. The nail in the coffin was that the bar staff eventually told him that the chef hadn’t even started making the second burger.. The staff was very apologetic and offered him a full refund and a free drink. In short, it's a great venue, but we all had a very disappointing experience. I had a great time purely because of the company of my friends, the staff was friendly but the service could be improved, the Yeah! Burgers looked better than they tasted, the menus do not match.. and if there is one saving grace from our visit.. try the elvis burger

Gloopy vegetarian sausages in the weirdest rolls I've ever had, covered in something described as wasabi Mayo and even the chips were bad! I'm glad I did, the food did not disappoint. The burger was extremely tasty as was the Scotch egg, which encased the patty. Whilst I’ve tasted better burgers this meal offered extremely good value for money and was thoroughly memorable for all the right reasons. The staff very attentive polite and the service was prompt. The venue is slightly quirky, a bit cramped in places and dim inside, but there is plentiful seating outside the venue which we enjoyed on the sunny afternoon. Went here after seeing a promotion on one of the London websites about Yeah Burger kitchen residence and for the next three weeks doing a range of burgers that were encased in scotch eggs rather than buns. Just had to try it. Having never been to the place before we made a booking which turned out to be in the bar bit at the front of the pub rather than in any restaurant so thats first point lost for sitting us at a sofa and then providing fold down chairs. We all ordered one of the scotch egg burgers and I have to say they took ages to arrive nearly an hour after ordering! They looked great and the eggs in the centre were just set so nice. However, once you got into it the burger itself was bland and dry and the scotch egg over seasoned really and quite salty. Then on to the fries..... wet fries with various toppings.... great..... good idea poorly executed there was hardly any topping on them and the fries themselves just seemed like basic frozen french fries. I may be wrong on that but i would have expected a bit better quality with the fries and for them to be hotter when they reached the table. I dont know if they were struggling in the kitchen that night but the place didnt appear that busy food wise so i cant see why. Great idea, a bit rough round the edges. Experience it once but go back again? not sure.

Needed a last minute rehearsal space in an accessible location. Hadn't been to the Star of Kings pub before but staff were very helpful with the booking (a very reasonable rate for 2 hours). We hired the studio which had sound insulation and cute shabby chic decor. Would recommend to anyone wanting a decent sized space whether rehearsing or indeed social gatherings. Food looked great too. Nice London vibe, not too pretentious, good Friday night crowd.

Was really looking forward to trying this burger. Sadly the reality did not match up. It arrived looking a bit sorry for itself. The bun was incredibly greasy (how is that even possible?) and some salad would not have gone amiss to add a bit of something (anything!) to it. Patty was bland with no real taste - apart from being so incredibly salty I could not eat it. It appeared to have been pre-cooked and reheated upon ordering as was burnt round the edges but not warm in the centre and the chips were worse. Went for Yeah! fries with sauce and onions. They came out a soggy, clumped mess and again were lukewarm at best. They were clearly rehydrated potato starch and nthing like real potato. Again, they went mostly uneaten. No one asked how the food was (perhaps they are afraid of the answer?) and service was surly. "you done with these?" Charming. I would suggest you avoid paying upwards of £11 for what is far worse than a Happy Meal - which costs less than £2.50 and is much, much better quality. Certainly not worth a visit.

We've been here 3-4 times always hoping it's going to be better than it is, since it's the only bar for a couple hundred metres in any direction, but it never is. The 'beer garden' is right on York Way, which is noisy and awful. The interior space hasn't really got anywhere to sit and turns into a bizarre / awful club at night. You're better off with the Lincoln Lounge a few minutes walk south on York Way.

I feel slightly sorry for the quiz master, as we were there by accident, but it turns out to have been a very good pub quiz (came second, bottle of something bubbly and probably very acidic). Only a few quid to enter. Food was very affordable, looking at generic pub/american menu of burgers, hot dogs, sides of mac n cheese and chilli.... Would go again, though slightly out of the way if you're not near there to start with.

I go here quite often at lunchtime. The food is interesting and reasonably priced for a London gastropub. Today I met a friend there, ordered a burger for me and a salad for her from the pretty spaced out barman who had a silly woollen hat and hipster moustache. We waited some time for the food. At last a second barman came and put a hamburger and a salad on the bar counter. The barman was talking on his phone. He came over to the food, looking absent minded and started to help himself to the chips and then to the salad, with his fingers while he leaned on the counter. When he noticed we were watching, he startled, picked up the plates, and shoved them hurriedly into the hands of another barman, who disappeared. About a minute later, he came back towards us, with the plates. He stopped short of the table. "Why are you looking like that? Do you not want the food?""We saw you eating from the plates.""Oh, no. That was another order." (As if eating from another customer's dish was acceptable)In any case, I accepted the dish after that. I couldn't prove he was lying. It was late and there was nowhere quiet within easy walking distance. When I paid the bill, drawn up by the other, competent barman, there was £2.00 taken off it for "open food". I wondered if that was a kind of apology.

We held a 30th birthday here, and were really pleased with it! Had a great chilled atmosphere, and a nice varied music choice, something for everyone! Drinks were reasonably priced, and there was enough room for everyone to dance and enjoy! The only let downs were the toilets which aren't of a great standard, and some of the communication leading up to the event was a mixed with different people contacting us, and we would have liked to know another private party was in the same area on the same night. Would definitely recommend for an occasion!

I booked this venue for my 40th birthday, had the back ground floor area for around a hundred and fifty friends and it was perfect, many thanks to Chris and all the staff who couldn't have been more helpful. I had to pay £90 for a sound engineer so I could have a band but that was worth it, the Funktion One sound system sounded great all night. I'd definitely recommend this place no problems.

I've been here a few times for club nights but came on this occasion for a Yeah Burger. Had some well kept beers from Redemption brewery on which was a nice touch. The burger itself was just ok. The patty was well done when it would have been better served medium. The brioche bun was probably the best bit. Certainly not a bad burger and chips, but somewhat unremarkable. Not bad for £7 though. Worth popping in if you're in the area

Booked upstairs room for our Engagement Do. Staff were friendly and organised from the off. No charge just deposit in case we didn't show.Room was very clean and tidy for us, including tea light candles 'for ambiance'.We had our own music using iphone/ipod, which they turned up on our request as the night progressed. Lovely staff, who weren't phased by a few of our party being a bit raucous at kicking out time - they took it all in good humour. Like a lot - especially when other places charge silly amounts for room hire. Don't go changing, star of Kings x

Had a christmas party here and the atmosphere was great but the food is AWFUL. It used to be bog standard pub grub, cheap and cheerful. Now the menu only includes overpriced skewers (I ordered halloumi, had one piece on the skewer) and some extremely greasy chips! Not sure if they are trying to cut costs but it's definitely gone downhill.

I booked the newley refurbished upstairs function room at the Star of Kings for a recent surprise birthday party. The planning went really well, was very straightfoward and all the staff were helpful, friendly and did everything they could to accommodate exactly what I needed. The food was excellent (En Brochette) and everyone had a blast. The fact that they allowed us to organise pretty much what we wanted and then they offered support, the food, the bar etc. was exactly what I wanted. I would definitely book again and recommend them. The only gripe I had was the drinks were maybe a little towards the expensive end for the venue.

I had a party with my sister at this venue on Sat night, it's Wednesday and I'm still buzzing :). The management did everything they could to make our night as smooth and hassle free as possible and were totally accomodating, thank you Chris and all. The atmosphere is warm, friendly and totally condusive to having a really lovely time - we had more than 150 guests and every single one of them is smiling in every photo. Amazing sound system. A lot have people have asked us to make it an annual event, and we might!

My company did business with the owner of The Star of Kings, so we agreed to host a joint event at the pub. I was very impressed with the responsiveness of the management to our requirements, the beer is varied and of good quality, the food delicious (it was spicy 'LA Street Food' so it got people talking!) and it has the right kind of atmosphere for a networking event. We hired a room for 50, but there is space for a more intimate event or a larger event. 5 mins from Kings X so perfect for people to reach from all over London.

After seeing some of the extremely harsh reviews of one of my favourite pubs and easily the best pub in kings Cross I feel compelled to set the record straight. The Star of Kings is a unique little gem of a pub that you just don't find very often. It's a shame that most of the negative reviews come from people attending "creative belly" or "stripped back" or whatever it's called. Creative Belly is a separate company and has nothing to do with the pub other than hiring out the upstairs for a month. I'm proud to say I'm a local and regular at the Star Of Kings and as a resident of Kings Cross it's refreshing to have such a hospitable pub where the staff remember your name and what you drink and offer more than the usual bland generic pub drinks and amusements. The wine menu needs a bit of work but The Star of Kings easily has the best range of craft beers and spirits in the area (by a million miles) and refreshingly lacks the usual pretentiousness associated with hipster craft beer bars. The staff can be a bit slow sometimes when it's busy but they still have time to say hi whenever they see me. The majority are a pleasure to chat with and have excellent recommendations whenever I ask them about any drink or dish on the menu . The food is always interesting with a new pop up kitchen every few months. At the moment they have some kind of crazy Korean/Mexican fusion thing going on. And how many pubs do you know that have a Funktion1 sound system and a hidden basement club? Yes the toilets are a bit smelly sometimes but this place screams character if not class. From everything from the retro pinball machine and games table to their 30k sound system and craft beer selection. Your just not gonna find that in many pubs in London or anywhere for that matter.

Came here with a big group - we had booked the upstairs room and paid £15 a head for sharing type food for around 30 people. What we got was very average food in tiny portions - what they served us to share between 5 I could have easily finished on my own: a bowl of crisps with some pickles and dips, a bowl of chips, a handful of chicken skewers and two bite sized tuna tostadas (how we were supposed to share these out, I have no idea!). The toilets stank of dirty urinals, as did half the pub. A mojito cost £8, took about 10minutes to make and tasted of nothing but watered down rum. service wasn't great, despite the fact the place was half empty. A massive rip off and no atmosphere

Stopped by for a pint before catching a show at King's Place. The front room and outdoor area were average. Had a comfy couch and good ale. The best thing, though, was the Speck Mobile which was offering a popup menu on the premises. If they continue hosting popups, I'd definitely recommend it as a place to grab a pint and meal/snack before visiting King's Place.

Having booked an area of the pub for a monthly meeting with 30+ friends on Saturday 11/1/14, we were less than impressed with the cleanliness of the place. Nobody was impressed with the food, the service was unfriendly and drinks West End prices for cheap plonk. We were all underwelmed with our venue, but on leaving 3 of us were the last to leave premises. One of our party discovered he had left his wallet, and the doorstaff refused to allow him to re-enter the pub to look for it. A member of the barstaff went to get the wallet, and returned, after a 5 minute delay, with the wallet in tact and £160 missing. Only members of staff had access to the wallet, when he complained about the missing £160 he was thrown out by the door staff. The management have no problem with this theft by their staff. If you go to this be very careful.
