Monday night pie nights are top drawer. Lovely staff, good selection of real ales, dog friendly & the best bit, excellent pies (plenty different flavours to choose from), mushy peas & proper chips. Great excuse for us to walk the dog !! Not many pubs left offering real ale & good pub food in Wakefield, The Star has got it spot on. Well done.

We had been told it was a friendly pub, and that their pie night on Mondays was wonderful. My first ever visit to the place. It didn’t disappoint. There was a pleasant buzz of chatter from the people who are quite clearly locals and regulars. It is nicely decorated, clean and well maintained. As for the pies…….. I’ve known and loved many a steak and ale pie. I’ve sat back and sighed as they became less and less like pies and more like shortcrust baubles with barely any filling. I’ve pushed away the flaccid offerings that are described as chips. I’d given up on ever having a proper pie with proper chips. Until tonight. This is real pie. Melting chunks of beef oozing out. Real chips. Rich gravy. Nothing fancy. Plenty of it. Hot. Served within minutes. Very reasonable price. I couldn’t manage it all but it was a revelation - real food, real pub, good atmosphere. Thankyou for restoring my faith in the great British pub classic - steak and ale pie and chips.

Such a shame the beer garden has been neglected. Rubbish, cigarette stubs and overgrown weeds in abundance. Toilets desperately need a refurb. Smell through the pub to the beer garden is not nice due to the toilets. I believe the same landlords have recently taken ownership of The Fox and Hounds in Newmillerdam. Hope they take more care of the place than they have done at The Star. Can't say I like the newly stencilled side wall either.

Our favourite pub in Wakefield by a mile. Lovely selection of real ales the friendliest staff who are now friends. The large beer garden hosts beer festivals every year and is a must visit. We love the star it's the best.

My Dad and I often go to the Star for a beer at least once a week. Everyone is always very welcoming and they had a good range of beers at good price. Can't go wrong really.

We booked The Star for my mother’s wake in September. From the first phone call enquiring if they could accommodate us the staff were lovely and so helpful. They made a difficult task very easy. They were flexible on numbers and Steph who I spoke to was so kind. The food was lovely and plentiful and they were happy to bag up leftovers for us to take home. There was plenty of space in the pub and everyone enjoyed it. The locals didn’t seem to mind us taking over their pub for a short while and were very friendly. Definitely the right choice for us. Thank you so much.

Lovely evening, never realised how big the garden area is at the back. Lots of space, so no worries on social distancing. The table service was very good, as staff constantly coming out to see if anything was needed.

Called in as staying just down the road at Broad lands farm campsite. It was quiz night and very busy great atmosphere with a warm welcome by the lovely bar staff. Drinks reasonably priced i was asked if i had had a sandwich and if not they would go and get one for us which was a lovely gesture by the landlady. Have not tried the food yet but here for another month so will be doing. Sometimes the dogs are louder than the humans but all were kept under control so no problem. We would definitely recommend a visit.

Its one thing describing yourself as dog friendly but the following is not acceptable. A few drinks yesterday afternoon was spoilt by 1 - ignorant dog owner letting its dog urinate against a table, not do anything about it and walking out. 2 - I made the bar staff aware of this and got the response ‘I wondered what the smell was’. However no attempt while we remained to clean the area. Poor on so many levels.

I absolutely love going to the Star. The owners and staff are lovely and friendly. The pub is dog and family friendly. They always have a good selection of ales and lagers and the usual spirits/wines that a pub has too. It’s a cosy pub and is always busy. Once attended the Quiz night which was also great, free food included and the chance of winning a meat package and a barrel of beer also! It was a lot of fun and a great evening out. Definitley my favourite local pub :)

Me and my good lady love visiting The Star it's always welcoming with excellent friendly staff. There's lots of cask ales to choose from and a large selection of gins. In the cold season there's two lovely coal fires to keep you warm.

For its former glory I’ll say it’s worth a visit to make your mind up. Locally brewed beer and limited choices of other drinks. Little local pub.

Love this pub! The staff are so friendly and acknowledge your dog too! . Gorgeous log fires tea lights on tables and cosy lights in the windows. And the big bonus for me they allow dogs in. It's so nice to see dogs just weaving between tables getting a stroke off the dog loving patrons. I understand they sell cheese and meat boards too. Haven't tried these yet. It's always fantastic to find a dog friendly pub. Well done The Star Inn !!

This pub had great beer and lovely staff. Some of which still remain. The reason for a change of opinion is down to one person. She seems to have taken the role of managing the bar. She isn’t very personable and definitely can’t pull a pint! Any of them. I’ve seen all types of ales rushed into a glass and the customer’s disappointment! I’ve voted with my feet and now drink around the corner at the Greenhouse. Bring back the quality Star Inn. Please.

Living in Aberdeen, but born and brought up in Sandal, I've been so delighted to see The Star doing so well. However my family reunion evening was completely marred by badly behaved dogs. We had found a lovely table and were on our second round of drinks when before we knew it a dog behind us made a bolt for its owner who had gone to the bar, a chair smacked into my brother in law, knocked into our table, tipped out out glasses all over the three of us, my new smart phone and our table. All we got from the table with the dog was" it's an accident". No apology, no offer to replace our drinks, zilch. None of us object to dogs in pubs, but in most of the ones we frequent the landlord makes a point of stressing"well behaved dogs welcome" Pity your customers aren't a bit more sympathetic to people who are out for a quiet, enjoyable family night out, but don't own a dog!

I was pleased that the Star Inn had reopened but disappointed that they didn't do food. But now they do lunch. After a recommendation, I met a friend for lunch and it was excellent. They have a short menu of interesting dishes. I chose the cornish pasty, new potatoes and salad. The salad had a lovely dressing and included radishes and celery. New potatoes were baked and pasty very tasty. Ideal for lunch. Very reasonable and a cosy atmosphere with excellent service. We had to wait for them to print the menu, so I guess this changes daily.

We come here most weekends for a pre lunch drink. Great beer (well, it is run by a local brewery- Morton Collins) and good, well priced coffee and wine. Today my OH had lunch- delicious chorizo and butterbean soup (large portion and as thick as a stew) served with cheese on toast! Such a great place! Also dog friendly.

Never been before but was passing by decided to give it a try. We visited at lunch time the menu was simple in its choices which suited both me and my husband so fed up of so called chain pubs with their "hunters chicken and chips". My husband had a baguette and I had lamb served on naan bread absolutely gorgeous. So fresh tasting, generous portions, home cooked, beautiful tasty salad, faultless. Highly recommend we are already planning our next visit.

Went for a lunch drink with my Wife, great informal beer garden to the rear. The food was excellent quality. The ploughman's had smoked sausage & hams, great cheese & best pork pie ever! The burger was top quality too, i was stuffed! Great choice of ales inside. Will definitely be back & try the evening sharing platters on offer. This is how a pub should be; clean, good drinks, set out well & food to compliment drinking, not vice versa as most are these days. Simple dishes each day that are more snack based than full on meals, but portion size was very good, quality excellant. Will go again for sure.

This is my 'local' and I'm so happy it reopened. The atmosphere is light and buzzing, and the choice of real ales is great. I've also been here for lunch- the food is delicious and well presented. The only downside is that they need more veggie/vegan choices- but other than that I highly recommend you check them out!

Came here on Tuesday evening for a drink with friends and to tackle the weekly quiz. Wonderful evening! Exceptionally friendly bar staff, beautifully made FREE roast beef sandwiches and the most welcoming atmosphere. We may have lost the quiz but we'll be back next week for sure! So glad to see this place doing well! Definitely my new local! Thank you to the team, you've made this place great again!

Popped in for Sunday lunch in passing. Have to say what a lovely pub we were welcomed as soon as we walked in. We both had a Sunday roast which has to be one of the best we've had we also shared a starter and pudding. Prompt service from 2 lovely ladies who made sure each course came out well timed and made sure we had everything we needed. Also our plates were cleared after our meal so we could sit and enjoy our drinks which doesn't happen in bigger chain pubs. We will definitely be back to sample more
