Fantastic modern suites. Extremely comfortable. The continental breakfast was superb, probably the best I've ever had. The location is a little out of the way from anything but if a quiet retreat from civilization is what you're looking for.. look no further. Exceptional value.

We stayed next door and their restaurant was shut, so we came to the star inn, it was excellent. It was burger night and we had the Star burger and the Lamb burger, some of the best burgers we have ever had. We ended up staying in there for drinks cause the selection of drinks and the games/darts etc. Really great place! Oh and dog friendly which we needed!

I have given this place 1 star only because 0 wasn't an option. Keep away. No experienced front of house, menu is minimal to say the least and doesn't even have prices on. Our table wasn't ready and the waitress took her first opportunity to tell us they had a table of 7 in so that was why we put in the back room . We waited 40 minutes for our starters and I had my deep fried mushrooms placed In front of me, no salad, garnish or any attempt at presentation, my wife had hers passed to her from the waiter who admitted he didn't even know what hers was. We waited another 30 mins and still our plates hadn't been taken so at that point we decided to pay for what we had and leave. I wish the owner the very best of luck but they won't survive until they master the basics

We went for a family dinner today. Sunday roast, good choice of meat, loads of veg and no overload of potatoes, good sized yorkshire pud and gravy. Beware the meat is smoked so the beef for example is on the rarer side. I had beef and between us one of each of the other meats, lamb and turkey. All were tender and full of flavour. Good choice of condiments, horseradish, mint sauce etc friendly attentive staff and owners. Variety of puddings.

Sunday lunch out was completely ruined. Took nearly an hour, serving others that arrived after. No coffee or tea. No starters. No desserts. We weren’t given a menu… told it was just beef, turkey, lamb. Ordered lamb and NO MINT SAUCE which is bizzare. Told they were trying something new by offering horseradish! Absolutely spoiled our dinner as that is a lamb dinner tradition! Carrots were rock hard! We all loved carrots but partially cooked would have been nice. Meals arrived and we all sent them back as they were cold. Lots of string left on the meat! I nearly swallowed a long piece! I don’t think the owner took our complaint seriously as we heard others complaining about carrots and no sauce. With the Bluebell next door they should be on top on their game. Next Sunday lunch we will all be eating at the Bluebell and giving this place a miss. Only being open for 2 weeks is no excuse- sorry it spoiled our day and can’t recommend it.

Underwhelmed. Probably won't go back. I will say the service was great, but the food did not justify the price. Portions were pretty miserly e.g. Roast dinner had 2 halves of a very small roast potato and 1 thin slice of beef.

Decided to eat here whilst staying in the area. Six adults. We decided to sit outside as it was such a lovely evening. We pulled 2 of the picnic benches together to accommodate us all. Unfortunately the bench my brother sat on was rotten and collapsed, thankfully no damage done. Waitress came to take order then came back for drinks order. Brother in law is coeliac so asked for a beer that stated gluten free on the menu...was brought a non gluten free beer. Steak and ale pie was the best thing ordered on the menu..ribeye steaks at £25 each very thin and dry and was not asked how it was to be cooked....homemade quiche and salad....tasted exactly the same as a cheap supermarket quiche and only 3 small wedges on the plate....food took around 45 minutes to be brought out and pub wasn't even that busy

Visitamos Flamingo Land, Pickering / steam train y Thornton Le Dale y esperamos volver al be + be para relajarse. Looking for somewhere to eat we decided to try the Star Inn, reputedly the oldest and most haunted inn of York. A collection of small but easily accessible rooms gave an intimate feel. A rather limited menu of typical pub style food but enough to be tempting. Order at the bar and remember your table number! It wasn't until we sat down after ordering the we realised we only had forty minutes before our train left! We explained this to the very friendly waitress and she said she would see what could be done. Ten minutes later (& it was busy) we had our food! All of the staff were very good at their jobs and from what we observed the customers very definitely came first. If our waitress reads this we left a tip but your colleague collected it! We also made the train with 20 second's to spare! Thankyou for your help.

Good variety of options on the menu which between us we had the majority of them and everyone thoroughly enjoyed. The pizzas are huge presented on large wooden boards with a great variety of toppings bbq chicken was the choice within our group and it was thoroughly enjoyed. The giant home made Yorkshire puddings I would highly recommend as a Yorkshire pudding lover filled with mash, roast beef and veg it was very filling and enjoyable. Some friends recommended this restaurant, down by the river in York. The ambiance is wonderful, the service attentive and fun, and the food was creative and superb. You get there walking down what almost looks like an alley, go almost under the bridge, through a gate and then start to smell the wood fire, and see the big glass windows and welcoming entry. Quite a find.

Like another reviewer, we stayed at the Blue Bell but ate at the Star Inn in the Friday evening. Got there at 8pm on a Friday night and no problem finding a table. Pub was not too busy. As the night went on it did get busier and busier around the bar. The place had a really good vibe and could easily have stayed much later if we didn't have a wedding to go to the next day. Barmaid cum waitress was very naturally friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Myself and my friend both had the sirloin steak retro style - great size for a hungry person. All presented on a wooden chopping board with a small pot of chips and some nice coleslaw. Cooked perfectly to my liking and a wonderful taste, the quality spoke for itself. I think every plate I saw in the pub was finished off - they've got it right!

We went to this restaurant on our last night for a meal. The restaurant over looks the river and has large windows giving a great view. The menu had a large selection of food, plus a set specials menu. We had a lovely selection of different bread while we were waiting on our food. I had the mussels to start with this was meant to have bread with it but that did not arrive but as it was a large portion I didn't ask for the bread. When our main course arrived the pork was just warm and the mash was stone cold. This was quickly take away as was my partners meal much to his disappointment. We we given replacement meals very quickly. I had the pork and my partner had the slow cooked lamb. The waiter was great he poured the wine when our glasses were empty he explained the menu wonderful service from him. Having seen a review of this restaurant in The Guardian whilst deciding where to take The Boss for her birthday meal I was determined that this would be the place, when I found that it was a five minute walk from the hotel this was the cherry soaked brandy in the hot chocolate. We booked a table when passing in the afternoon and returned later in the evening to be shown to a table by a delightful young lady who, it transpired, was working her very first shift. She had to inform us of this as you would never have guessed from the level of service. The food was as excellent as the service and was worth the money spent. Our post prandial drinks included the cherry brandy hot chocolate alluded to earlier that was simply the best hot chocolate she has ever experienced. The only downside is that the selection of drinks available to those of us less interested in viniculture could be extended to more than one beer, though the oak cask aged beer from Barbados was most agreeable. If on the hunt for a really good meal in York you should do yourself a favour and try The Star Inn.

The service was brilliant throughout and Matt, the head chef, even came out to speak to us and check that we were enjoying our food which was a really nice touch. I have noticed that some people think that they bread in flat caps is stupid and wrong, however, I think it is an amazing idea and really adds to the unique dining experience you receive. A large group of us went to the Star. As many people have pointed out, the setting is absolutely wonderful, with views over the river. The interior is also beautiful. However, that's where it stops. We pre ordered our food at around 11.00 a.m. However, the staff were unable to advise us regarding the 'specials' as they said that they would not be made aware of them until later. I struggled to find anything on the menu, which is limited. I chose the garden salad (at £16). When we returned for our meal at 2.00 p.m., we were put in the private dining area upstairs. There is no view from this room and we had to wait a long time for our mains i.e. 45 minutes. When they arrived, there were all sorts of problems e.g. no vegetables, some food was cold. My garden salad was very strange - mostly a puree of blue cheese with a carrot and a piece of kale stuck in it. It was a huge disappointment. A few members of our party had desserts and these looked great, but, on the whole, we found the long wait and the food a big let down. What a shame for such a beautiful location.

Great looking place and very busy. Menu was different from the usual run of the mill so we were looking forward to it. Complimentary bread arrived at the table, unfortunately the top layer was stale and dry probably where it had been sitting around in the heat of the kitchen. One starter of mussels arrived without the bread which we were told when we enquired that the kitchen had run out of bread and more was in the oven! The potted pate was nice but nothing out of the ordinary. The cassoulet was exceptional and the mussels were lacking flavour. Main courses arrived. Do not order the lamb. It was swimming in barley and arrived looking like a swiss roll, It tasted pretty awful too and looked like slop on a plate. The waitress was very good, she immediately took it away I swapped it for the pork which was not inspiring. My husband ordered the risotto which he said was OK and our friend had the woof which looked the best dish - basically fish and chips but fish bread crumbed to an escalope. She said this was very nice. We skipped dessert as dinner was a bit flat and disappointing. I would summarise as being average quality food with a restaurant trading on the name and brand. We will definitely not be back. The bill of £150.00 was not worth what was presented to us and there are many superior restaurants in York as we know from experience. The mixed reviews on Trip Advisor are very true. This is a hit or miss restaurant.

This is a stylish restaurant in a beautiful setting - it's almost a waste to go when it's dark. They turn tables for dinner, which I hate, but the food is good and the wine list reasonable. It's not cheap but we could have halved the cost of our meal by sharing dishes as the portions are massive, not just generous but wasteful. They must throw so much food away. The liver pate starter was the size of a pot you would buy at a farmer's market, with half a loaf of (good) bread. The Yorkshire pudding starter was hilarious, the size of someone's head. Same for the prawn cocktail, each dish would easily serve two. The ravioli was excellent but again, way too much. We couldn't fit dessert in, despite a valiant effort. I'd go again, but would share everything.

I finally managed to visit the Star Inn for my wedding anniversary, my wife had been here 2 to 3 times before with work and has not been too keen but we thought we would give it a go. The scenery was amazing, probably one of the best in York and the service was excellent however what let the place down was the food. To start with I first thought that the menu was poor and struggled to find anything appertising. I started with a Posh prawn cocktail and I have to say that it was very nice, well worth it, this was followed by a £30 T-bone steak which was very, very poor. The steak looked like it had been steamed which lost all the hallmarks and the tradition of the steak. Some taste was there and it was cooked to how I ordered it however I think I lost 2 stone trying to cut through the sinew and the fat. I have eaten many steaks in many restaurants and this was probably the worst. If a restaurant wants to charge £30 for a steak I expect it to be top notch, something special not some chewy, rubbery and fatty lump. We both shared the steamed ale cake for dessert and we were extremely let down and the cake came dry as sand, I either needed 4 jars of butterscotch sauce or I needed to eat it in the Ouse. I’m no chef but I think it’s harder to dry out a cake when it’s steamed with ale than make it spot on. £95 for 2 course and 1 dessert - will not be going back and will not recommend.I felt sorry for the very helpful waiter

The Star Inn is situated on the banks of the river and overlooks the gardens in the centre of York. As two of the walls of the restaurants are glass you are spoiled for views at this time of the year. The inside of the restaurant is beautifully presented and it's obvious that a lot of thought has gone into it.That however is about as complementary as I can be. Service was extremely slow at times. Food when it arrived was lukewarm and not as described and coffee was not available as there was only one barrista on duty - in the tourist season!

We gphave been yesterday night for dinner. And of course, if someone wants to spend a lots of money for food, it should be of a good quality. We had 3 different starters: ravioli, a salad and yorkshire pudding. Well, ravioli and salad were quite good, but the yorkshire puddings quite aged. Really hard, when they are supposed to be soft on the bottom. They were actually dried and really bad. Lets go to he main: a 35 pounds risotto, cold, fish overcooked and one of the ingredients wasn't available and the waitress didn't bother to tell us, so when the risotto has arrived we thought that they forgot somethin. The other two main were ok, but nothing special. The rib didn't really worth 16 pound( or more I don't remember). It was quite cold and dry. Onion rings clearly cooked in dirty oil, they were quite black. Really nice the waitresses. in general overpriced and bad quality. I don't recommend it to anyone. just nice location and good interior.

The bakery department made me two amazing Tiramisu Roulades today for a bonfire bbq, they were amazing to look at and delicious to taste. Thank you for going above and beyond for a very happy customer

We visited mid week for an evening meal, we received a lovely warm welcome from the staff and shown to our table straightaway. Service was excellent and the food was amazing, especially the Baileys Bread and Butter pudding with vanilla custard! The food is well priced for the quality, we definitely need to visit again before we go home.

Pub with plenty of character. Good choice on menu, Yorkshire sized portions and food of good quality. Staff friendly, welcoming and helpful. One perhaps drawback for some in having to use public pay and display car parks. Convenient though.
