I ordered a cheese and pickle bap for £9 including coleslaw. Another £3 for chips (a small portion) so £12 for a cheese and pickle bap and chips. Expensive I thought, but I really fancied it - I assumed it would be very nice for that price. A 'bap' I thought would be a large white floured bread roll, the cheese I thought would be sliced quality mature cheddar with (hopefully) Branston pickle. It was just awful! It was a small broiche burger bun that has been toasted, it was grated, tasteless cheese and the pickle was so runny it ran out of the bun and tasted really cheap, like catering pickle. And, to make matters worse there were 3 of us, I ordered and paid separately to the other two (but at the same time at the bar) and I asked for all 3 dishes to come together but they brought mine out well before the others. So, the toasted burger bun had become like cardboard as it went cold and I couldn't even cut it with a knife! Very, very poor quality ingredients for a £9 cheese and pickle bap. I left over half of it. Really disappointed by the rubbish, mass catering ingredients being served, felt really ripped off and would not go back there.

We popped in today with no reservation & we were lucky to get a table. The pub & town were busy & we were told it would be 45 minutes wait for food, we had no problem with this & sat & had our drinks. Friendly welcome & the roast beef was super. The only improvement for me would be some cauliflower cheese but that's my personal taste. We would definitely eat here again. The fish & chips looked great also.

Exactly as we were looking for. We had booked for the light trail at Blenheim and had planned to eat in the village prior to our event. We were looking for a warm and welcoming pub with good wholesome pub food. When we arrived mid afternoon and the fires were lit and the welcome was just as warm. We enjoyed the scampi and chips as well as the steak and ale pie. Both dishes were hot and delicious. Accompanied by a couple of glasses of pinot noir and an IPA this was a nice retreat on a winters afternoon.

Popped in for a beer, on a mini Sunday afternoon pub crawl. ish. The pub was packed and we noticed rather delicious looking Roast Dinners being dished out. We asked if we could eat and they found us a table after a short wait. The food took ages to come but it was worth the wait. This was the best roast dinners we have had in ages. Very very good.

We went there as a foursome with friends and enjoyed the food. There is a limited menu due to Covid but that is fine as it still had all the pub classics. Our foursome had pies, fish and chips and I had the sausage and mash, which I thought was the best I have had anywhere. Puddings were delicious. Service was attentive and there was good distancing and hygiene throughout. A most enjoyable evening and would certainly go again.

Great location in the heart of Woodstock. Although there is lots of roadside parking, a free space was difficult to find. The sign outside “Great Beer Garden” over sells it somewhat. Service was a bit curt! The scampi was quiet good, but the sandwiches very disappointing and overpriced.

Arrived with friends for Sunday lunch with to have roast beef. What a mistake!!! The food was terrible, Yorkshire puddings looked like a flat bread on a plate. Gravy- you could still see instant gravy granules. What a laugh! I guess it is a £10 ( you can upgrade to cauliflower cheese for an extra £2) Even the cauliflower looked hardly baked- that showed how much the chefs do care about food they are serving- probably amateurs. School like dinner. And the service- we were served by a lady with dark hair and glasses. It seems to us she did simply mistaken her job in hospitality to a military operation She might be better suited to. Overall a bad experience of food and service. Not to be return ever.

We had a long weekend here to explore Oxford and Blenheim Palace. The room was comfortable, only drawbacks are the steep windy staircase and it can be a bit noisy from the bar down below in the evenings. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and it gets very popular with locals in the evenings and Sunday lunchtime. We only ate here one evening, basic pub food but it was fine and the Sunday lunch looked excellent value at £10 for roast beef but we were too full after breakfast to partake. It is very handy for the bus to Oxford and the entrance to Blenheim palace is at the end of the lane.Would recommend to anyone staying in Woodstock.

We booked through the mandatory Booking.com and had requested a twin room. At check-in were informed no twin rooms - only four rooms in total. We managed with a double and the check-in was efficient and friendly! I cannot understand what previous reviewers have stated the rooms being dirty .... we had Room 2, yes, the bathroom door does need fixing and the shower door too, but it was absolutely spotless. We did hear some conversation from the next door room early evening, but nothing to really complain about and it was quiet when we returned after a night out in Woodstock. The staff were so lovely and helpful as were the locals and we had dinner which was faultless - delicious and very good value, as was the breakfast - all beautifully cooked. The latter being a tad slow, but we weren't in a mad rush. In conclusion ...... get the doors fixed in Room 2 and ensure that the stairs are recorded as being potentially hazardous - a must for Health and Safety reasons, and we would definitely return.

Came to Woodstock for a night away with my husband. We started by sharing a sandwich and chips (the ‘ciabatta’ bread was clearly old so toasted to within an inch of its life) and then checked in (early to be fair). We then went for a lovely walk around Blenheim Palace gardens, followed by a couple of drinks in one of the local pubs before heading back to the Star inn. Having fallen asleep for a pre dinner nap, we were quickly awoken by the people in the room next door who sounded like they were trying to get into our room. We think ours and the room next door were probably once one room that had been chopped in half (ours was absolutely tiny). We decided to chance it and try eating a proper meal downstairs. It was fair (you can’t go to wrong with fish and chips), I think the pudding was probably a couple of days old so had been slightly warmed to take the hardness out of it. The major issue here is the lack of cleanliness and lack of space. When heading up and down the stairs to the rooms (which are not suitable for anyone with mobility issues, very narrow winding staircase) there are some funky smells. The room (number 2) was tiny, pretty grubby and the bathroom needs some TLC. The shower door doesn’t shut, neither does the bathroom door which is fine if you have no issues with privacy! The room was unbelievably noisy, it sounded like the people in the adjoining room were in with us. Whilst they were walking around their room, the headboard to our bed shook and you could hear them word for word. The bed is tiny (queen size) and very uncomfortable. The throw pillows (that were on the bed) were dirty and had some pretty manky stains on them. Breakfast was an absolute disgrace. The breakfast wasn’t edible, literally the worst breakfast ever put in front of me, although the coffee was good. The fruit bowl had brown apples and oranges, which I took out, but when I walked back past, the staff had returned them to the bowl. It felt like the inn relies on passing trade and doesn’t need to try, so they don’t. It’s slap dash, dirty and a real disappointment. At no point did anyone ask us how we had slept, or how we had enjoyed our stay, just goodbye as we left and that says it all! Would definitely not return or recommend.

Just returned from two nights in the Star Inn. What a fabulous place it is. It was an ideal choice to spend time with friends. Arrived on Friday afternoon and was greeted by lovely friendly staff, who might I add gave us excellent advice on parking. Check in was easy and we were shown to our room. There are only four rooms and ours was at the front. The rooms were nicely decorated. We had a comfy bed and a big shower. All the comforts you need for a couple of nights. The place was buzzing and it did not matter what time of day you were there it was packed out. It is right in the centre of the town and is handy for everything. We had booked bed and breakfast but you could buy an English breakfast for only £5. Good value. It seemed very popular on a morning. We also had a meal there on Friday and that was also very nice and again good value. Overall you cannot best this place if you are visiting Woodstock. Very handy for Blenheim Palace.

Pleasant atmosphere pub with the usual fare. We ordered the IPA Haddock and chips. Oh! dear what a disappointment. Haddock is a meaty dry white fish. What we received was a watery version. Most probably it was originally frozen and then thawed. Whatever it was a poor quality fish that did not deserve the name of Haddock. The chips were the crinkly ones straight out of a frozen packet. All in all a sub standard attempt. Please avoid.

Having ordered the chicken, ham and leek pie, I thought the contents, when it arrived and I had cut into it, looked rather dark and it transpired I had been given someone else's beef pie. The waitress realised the error straight away and offered to change it for the correct one but I had a bus to catch so couldn't wait. The pie was pretty average, though they did agree to garden peas instead of mushy, but wouldn't give me a side salad instead - I'd have to pay extra for that. The food was hot; the chips pleasantly dry; the beer was good (Bombadier) but, when I came to pay, I discovered, having asked the waitress earlier about the price of the 'wrong' pie and told that the prices were the same, that I'd been charged for the pie that I'd ordered rather than the one I'd been given. OK, there was only 5p difference, but there's a principle here and I had been given the wrong order. Staff were very pleasant but I felt the place had little atmosphere as there were few people lunching or drinking. After the wrong order situation I decided that no tip was deserved. I would return if I were in Woodstock again as most of the other eateries looked very expensive.

When we had finished we were asked if the meal was ok and would we like a sweet. We expressed are dissatisfaction with the meal and declined a second course. Within about 2 mins. a bill was put on our table, although our glasses were still half full, then a waitress came over and asked if we were paying by card! It looked like a case of pay up and get out. We travel as a group for business and always ended up here for Pub Quiz night. As Americans we knew next to nothing about the British TV shows or information but we usually had enough locals on the team to have a good showing. Love the food, miss the sticky toffee pudding. Great meeting place and food. Miss this place..

I am at Woodstock for business, and ate at the star inn. The food took along time to come and when it did it was well over cooked. When we complained to the middle aged bar lady with glasses she was very abrupt with us . Avoid this place. Also full of right shady characters.

The Star Inn is a great old pub full of charm and character. We stayed here for two nights, our room was at the front of the pub. Our room had a lovely comfortable bed, the furniture is period and suits the character of the pub. There is a narrow spiral staircase which might be challenging for some customers although you can access the rooms from the rear courtyard. It can get noisy outside at night due to seating being at the front of the pub, even with the windows closed.

Stayed in Woodstock for a long weekend and found this little gem on the second evening. Good selection of beer, gins and malt whiskey. The spirits are very competitively priced. Didn't find out until the end of the evening, which was good for my liver.

Identical menu in two days from two different pubs, so realised that vegan variety is weak. So tried the same dish, Vegan Meze; must say this was the better provider by a nose! Still can't understand how they get away with charging £14 for this dish, definitely gold plated cauliflower...! However it remained very tasty indeed. My party tried different dishes off the main menu and all stated how nice their food was.

My wife and I had called in here on Saturday 16th September to see if we could grab a bite to eat and a drink. Unfortunately at lunchtime they did not do any food but did kindly suggest another local place for us to eat at. After about an hour or so we returned to have a drink in the bar area and relax in what we thought was a superb traditional local pub which just had so much character. One of the locals made us feel very welcome and came over and had a chat with us both for about 10 minutes. He gave us some local history info and mentioned about the village and its links with the tv program Downton Abbey. All in all a very nice visit and if we were ever in the area again we would not hesitate in calling in. Thank you.

Great food and wine. Creative preparations and friendly service. Upscale pub ambiance. Enjoyed 2 dinners here and far too many pints.

Chip portions not consistent, seem to get fewer and fewer. Asked for battered sausage and it came without batter, second time in a row. Lost our custom.

Booked table for 5 in advance. Roasts were OK but vegetables cold and had to be reheated. Veg lazagna tasted like a microwave meal. Chef came out to apologise and offered a free dessert but to be honest we just wanted to leave. Restaurant was empty, so food should've been better.
