Myself & My wife chose the Bay tree restaurant to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary. We were not disappointed the restaurant decor and atmosphere was fabulous. The food was truly exception and the staff really made you feel spoilt. As a surprise they laid on a dessert, which was a really nice touch. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this restaurant.

Staff were, & ambience was, perfect! Staff could not have been more attentive. However our afternoon tea, (which was a gift), was very disappointing. Consisting of THREE finger sandwiches each, (note: NOT 6 slices of bread, but 4 slices cut into three thin parts each), and each quite soggy AND stuck to the napkin on the plate! Scones were small, and too hard. In adfition, we ordered the artichoke soup, and chips which I rate 10/10. Pity that the intended 'highlight', (the afternoon tea), was such a letdown! I love the Bay Tree usually, and only live 15 minutes away. However on this occasion the afternoon tea was a disappointment, which is a great shame, as I had high hopes. To reiterate, your Staff are AMAZING, as is the venue. I would appreciate your feedback, as I am sure you take comments seriously, as they are a big indicator as to how you are treating your guests, and how they react to that treatment! Many thanks for your attention...and response in advance!

Booked for a Sunday lunch to celebrate a birthday. Wondered why it was so empty. We were the only ones there. Soon realised it was because the food and service were horrendous! The cauliflower fritters were just huge undercooked lumps of cauliflower. The broccoli side dish was uncooked. The roast was inedible and the vegetables accompanying the roast were black. We still to this day cannot figure out what they were! We were going to order some dessert as we were still hungry after not being able to eat our mains but the waitress disappeared and we were left with dirty plates - alone in the restaurant! I eventually left some money on the table to pay as we had been deserted! Needless to say, we went into town for some dessert and coffee. Overpriced and you can have a better meal by getting a Marks and Spencer ready meal!

1-star review due to food poisoning and most importantly lack of appropriate response from management. We went for dinner with my wife and had the exact same dish. Roughly 6 hours after, both of us started feeling stomach cramps which then turned out to be pretty severe food poisoning with all the worst signs. My wife and I didn’t eat lunch from the same place and had no snacks during the day… My wife had to spend the entire day in bed while trying to breastfeed our 5-month old baby. It’s been four days and we still have symptoms. Yet the management response couldn’t be poorer. Firstly we had to wait almost 48 hours for the general manager to call us after emailing, going there in person and chasing by phone. When she called she didn’t apologise once. Not once. She told us a third party would investigate the case fully, including by calling us and give the parent company a report. It’s been five days and we still haven’t heard from that third party investigator. So I trust that the fridges have been wiped and the kitchen cleaned and the investigation will reveal nothing? The appropriate response from a general manager in the hospitality industry would have been to apologise, and offer compensation so we can move on, then go and do your internal investigation to ensure it doesn’t happen again. Instead the manager focused on not accepting liability, making us feel cheap suspected grifters.

Been to this place before and we liked it here as its not normally that busy. Took my mother here last week for some drinks and nibbles or a potential dinner (we walked in as theres no wedding this time) Sat in the bar and a young dark haired girl served us. at first she was lovely but after pointing out that my mum has an allergy her whole attitude shifted, Yes we forgot to mention that my mum have an allergy but sighing and sounding exasperated in front of us was down right uncalled for. Went to the bar to get her attention as we needed some serviettes to hear her over the phone saying “my table is a joke and didnt mention their allergies” We think this is unacceptable in a hospitality business. Went to reception to ask the lady with few tattoos for her name which was given to us. So to the young lady called “Alice” thank you for ruining a nice evening with my mother x

Brócoli no comestible.

No volveremos

We ate here for our anniversary and stayed in the hotel overnight which I have reviewed separately. We have previously had some excellent food at the Manor House and Broadway Hotel hence our choice to try another one of the groups restaurants. Don't get me wrong the restaurant is well appointed with a lovely garden to the rear and the staff are well trained, friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately the meal did not go to plan. My wife's food was ok but nothing special. I ordered lamb shoulder with lamb cutlet for a main course but when it came, I realised within a minute or so that there was no lamb shoulder but 2 smallish cutlets. I called across the waiter and pointed this out. He went off to consult the chef and I carried on eating the meal which was pleasant enough. When he returned, he informed me that the kitchen had run out of lamb shoulder so had given me an extra lamb cutlet. To be honest, I was astonished that this had not been communicated before serving. £24.00 to serve 2 small cutlets was not on and I blame the Chef entirelyOur waiter was very embarrased and did not charge for the main course but the damage was done and our anniversary dinner became somewhat of a disappointmentThe only bright spot is that the service and attention from our waiter was very friendly and apologetic and we did get a nice anniversary message on our pudding plates. I have a feeling that on this particular Monday evening we may have caught the kitchen without the Head Chef. Shame

The restaurant is welcoming, nicely laid out, the food at dinner was good and well presented with an interesting menu choice on offer. Service is friendly but the wine and food service was poorly co-ordinated. The breakfast was mixed with a good buffet choice, but the cooked breakfasts we had were of poor quality and inaccurate in relation to what was ordered. I ordered grilled tomatoes on toast with one poached egg. Two over cooked poached eggs on cold and barely toasted bread with no tomatoes arrived. I sent it back and they returned the same meal, to which had been added two tomato halves. It was returned uneaten. My husband's omelette was far too big and under flavoured.

We ate at his restaurant four times during our three-night stay at the Bay Tree Hotel. All the meals were exceptional given the great setting, food, and service. The restaurant is small with only 6 or so tables inside and some more on the terrace. On the first night, my wife had orzo as her main and I had the pork two ways - both very good. The other three meals were breakfasts and I discovered the secret to perfect English breakfasts. The continental breakfast buffet table was noteworthy in that there were always at least three varities of juices, yogurt, cereals, four or five types of breads/croissants,pastries with at least two types of preserve toppings, and various fruits (one day with papaya). Service at breakfast was fantastic since my mother-in-law and I were always the first patrons so we had everybody's attention. It was great lingering over a few cups of Americano coffee eating a croissant and reading the paper a while before ordering the English breakfast.

My husband and I stayed for a weekend. Loved the hotel, beautiful decor and atmosphere. Sadly the restaurant and managing of the staff needs some tlc. Dinner on the first night was an experience. During our starters alone, we were asked by no less than 6 different members of staff whether we had chosen our wine yet. The entire meal was continuously punctuated by staff asking us if everything was ok. I’ve decided that over attentive staff may actually be more upsetting than under attentive. It was incredibly disruptive to what should have been a relaxed romantic meal. The staff were all really lovely, but it felt like no one was really sure what was going on or what the diner actually needed!

The menu is a set two or three course, choice is adequate though not extensive and there's really nice complimentary nibbles and bread to start. Quality is more impressive than quantity when it comes to eating and that's where the Bay Tree excels. Our meals were perfect and difficult to find fault. I had a steak and cooked just the way I ordered it, my wife had the pasta, also cooked to perfection. Attended a wedding in May. Food was plentiful and pretty amazing. Very tasty and varied. Well presented too. We were out in the garden which was beautiful but could benefit from more heaters etc. The steps everywhere are lethal! I fell several times! However it's a lovely venue and beautiful for weddings. The staff take it very seriously and don't smile at all but are not rude. Jordan in the bar is great fun and makes you feel welcome. The drinks are expensive. Perhaps as I paid about six pounds for a gin and tonic cucumber or more fruit in it would have increased the presentation and maker the price easier to swallow. Drinks should be fun and attention to detail is lacking here. Overall the day was lovely and memorable. The wedding breakfast was in a very dark room at the back where we were and a bit slippery.

I may be biased but the restaurant in the Bay Tree is truly excellent.I say biased because this was where, eight years ago, my wife and I were married. On that day, the kitchen served 80 guests a first class meal with every appearance of proficient ease.Since then, the restaurant has had a makeover. It was always a friendly and relaxed place, if rather grand. However, the ancient tapestries have presumably been moved somewhere safer and the style is now brighter and more contemporary. No doubt, there have been staff changes, too. Certain things, though, remain the same - the place exudes a gorgeous atmosphere, loaded with a vibrant sense of the ancient history of the building, and guests, as ever, are treated wonderfully well.We may possibly have let it slip that we were back to celebrate our anniversary and maybe that might explain a degree of special care being taken but the warmth of the welcome was genuine and the attention we received was close but never obtrusive.Based on previous experience, we expected a first class meal and we were not at all disappointed. Every course was a taste of heaven. In the circumstances, we decided we should share! When we thought we had finished eating, we were presented with a complimentary plate of chocolates and jellies, decorated with a message reading "Happy Anniversary". It certainly was!

We were at a Wedding here on 29 December - what a beautiful venue and location - the whole day ran smoothly and efficient - the staff were all perfect - the wedding dinner in the afternoon was exceptional - we will try to stay at The Bay Tree ourselves in the future, it was that good an experience.

We visited the Bay Tree Hotel as it was dog friendly and we wanted a light lunch. Light it was indeed and we had to wait a very long time for it to arrive. I had the quiche of the day and it was miniscule with just a few salad leaves on the side. Very poor value at £8.95. My wife had the poached eggs and mushrooms on sourdough which was also a very mean little portion. Although the staff were very friendly and the bar had a nice atmosphere with log fires burning on a cold day, the portions for lunch were so poor I would hesitate to eat there again.

Went with family for Sunday lunch - sat in the bar by log fire which was delightful. Ordered food and a few drinks.... Marco the waiter was very friendly...Anyway some 50 minutes later, still no food - a very apologetic manager explained that there had been a problem with the ordering system, however our food was going to be with us within 10 to 12 minutes so we stayed and the restaurant provided us with Pistachio nuts...So some 30 minutes later, no waiter could help us, they simply all disappeared, unable to get feedback on our food. Children were getting very hungry by now. I asked to see the manager who came after a further 10 minutes. Instead of telling us how long it would be until we had food, he just got very defensive about the problems they were facing. I am a grown up man able to handle bad news - just tell me how long it's going to be rather than go into a long explanation about the kitchen problems..Food came - was not worth the wait (to be fair the burgers were good). By then I was no longer hungry and was very frustrated that the staff seemed simply uninterested.Asked for the bill, the manager gave us a 50% discount - I think that is what one calls a gesture. He gave me his card and told me to write to him to give feedback (clearly did not want immediate feedback in front of other customers). I will write and I will give feedback - but to be fair if he had not understood the problem by now, a letter won't make it clearer..Should have done like the other customers who just walked out after waiting for 45 minutes. I am naive I guess - I expected better and was sadly very disapointed. Been there now - can't see why I should ever go back.....Advice to the restaurant - there are always going to be problems, that's life, and customers understand. Just make it look like you care, bring a drink, give the meal for free, get your waiters to talk to the customer - just a few ideas...

Booked table of 14 for Father in Law's 80th. Arrived early and enjoyed drinks in the bar. Lovely open fire burning and a lively atmosphere in a beautiful building. Proceeded to restaurant table to find it set for 13 despite acknowledgement via email of increase in number of guests. Chose food from set menu which included plenty of choice at a good price. Restaurant not especially busy although there was a private party in an adjacent room. Wine ordered but no wine glasses on table so had to wait for those to arrive. This proved to be the watchword of the day as we waited for pretty much everything else thereafter. Bread rolls bought out but only enough for approx 8 of us. The rest had to wait for others to be readied. Starters arrived and all appeared fine. Main courses then arrived some time later. Side plates not cleared from table, leaving very little room , until requested. One main course ordered without cauliflower cheese but this not mentioned when served and it subsequently was eaten by someone else. Trout main course appeared to be salmon? Potatoes like bullets and clearly overcooked. Vegetables also rock hard, undercooked?Coffee ordered but only a few brought out with the others following some 10 mins later after a reminder was given. Generally the service was hap-hazard and long waits preceded any action or arrival of orders and we generally felt neglected. A shame really as the menu read well and was priced effectively. Gloss taken off experience due to the poor service. One consolation, there appeared to be an omission on the bill of the drinks which helped! Could do so much better with such fabulous surroundings.

We stayed at the Bay Tree Hotel for 2 nights and dinner was included for one of the nights. The restaurant is lovely and the staff were very polite and attentive. The food was excellent but not exceptional hence the rating. I would however highly recommend eating here, we intend going back to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere, surroundings and food.

I should have written this ages ago.. but when i went to the Hotel for my Partners 50th Birthday Celebrations first night we thought push the boat out go for a Hotel meal... little did we know that the chef could NOT offer any options for Gluten/diary free. admittally i did not warn them but as this is So common these days I would not expected my partner not to have anything for Starters even a pile of salad would have done she had to set and watch me eat. Then she was in tears through the main course... After this we went down the late night store in the town and picked up a load of gluten free snacks for my partner to eat.interestng the next day they pulled out all the stops for breakfast ( they had been to the same store over night) but it was all too late.We checked out of the hotel watch had long conservation with the manager that basically had to pay most of the monies due for a 3 day stay.... We checked into the travel lodge down the road as we were in the area for a short Birthday break we walked to a local pub The Cotswolds Arms the next night that were most helpful on food allergies... For the type of Hotel this place is trying to be, You would have thought they would have options on every menu for Gluten free.I would Never recommend this to anyone again.. total sour taste in the mouth. maybe this why it take 6 months to write this

We booked this two night Telegraph offer months ago as we had heard how lovely Burford is from several friends and also from a couple who know The Bay Tree well how good they think the hotel is. We were not disappointed the rooms were comfortable, although the bathrooms were a little dated but it doesn't pretend to be a contemporary establishment it's very traditional, and well decorated and the bar cosy with a good choice of food. The food in the restaurant surpassed all our expectations for supper and breakfast, it was all delicious. The staff throughout the hotel were helpful and cheerful and the service in the restaurant for the evening excellent. The general manager helped sort out a minor confusion in a very polished professional way, overall a very enjoyable two days, we would have no hesitation in recommending and returning.

A very pleasant meal with super food. The unannounced "amusé bouche" starters were a nice (& tasty!) surprise.Three courses were only £2 more than the price of two courses, so it was easy to "give way to temptation" and go for a third course! Delicious, though the waitress's promise that the desserts were "calorie-free" was definitely a bit of poetic licence! The service was attentive without being intrusive, though the wine waiter is still in a learning curve (armagnac v. cognac, for example)...Overall, a very pleasurable evening leaving a sense of contentment with having eaten too much.Well worth trying for yourselves!

Called in to book a table here a couple of weeks before our visit and it seemed full of charm. How lovely to find that we had fabulous service and a wonderful meal here tonight. We wanted a special meal in this area to take our French visitors so they could return to France with a beautiful memory of the Cotswolds . ....We were not let down. Worth a visit! We will return!

We dined in the restaurant twice during our recent stay at The Bay Tree. Each time the food was absolutely sublime. Such delicate flavours and perfect portion size. I had pumpkin soup to start, followed by vegetarian gnocchi and salted caramel for pudding - couldn't find fault with anything - all delicious and the staff were very attentive and helpful when we were deciding on wine. 10 out of 10

I have been to the Bay Tree 3 times in 30 years. Most recently last week. What used to be a gorgeous and welcoming hotel has turned into a rather faded and worn out experience. Service was brilliant in parts and terrible in others.

Having had superb food here decided to go again. A group of 7 went for lunch, ordered drinks, very efficient friendly staff. Disappointing menu choice this time but Ordered the meals and waited for 1 hour before asking if the food would be much longer and was told just plating up. 4 people ordered the smoked haddock fish cake which arrived on a spoonful of pea purée and 2 lettuce leaves ( was meant to be a salad!) would have been a good starter. The quiche and salad leaves was quiche with 4 lettuce leaves, the cod was encased in a hard batter and the chips were dry. The waitress asked if everything was OK and we said that as the portions (fish cake) were extremely small could we order chips as people were hungry. The waitress said she would inform the manager of our complaint. We had coffee and asked for the bill. No apology for the disappointing food and nothing taken off the bill. We will definitely not be eating here again which is a shame as it is such a lovely venue.

Visited here today with 6 friends for lunch. We have all been there several times before and have had no complaints but this time we were all so disappointed with the amount of food. Two of us had the quiche of the day. I have a very small appetite and I could have eaten twice as much as was served up. It came with a few rocket leaves and cheese shavings, This cost over £12, worth half that. 4 friends had the fishcake which was just that. A fishcake on top of a few peas. Again over £12. Wouldn't mind but we waited 45 minutes for it. We would not go back there ever again for food. The actual place is lovely and has a great atmosphere with huge open fires. Next time we all meet up we will eat elsewhere and go to the Bay Tree for coffee. I have to assume that they think they can get away with the meager portions and high prices as it caters to tourists and not regulars so they are not bothered if you return or not. We did complain to the waitress (who was very attentive) and she said she would pass our remarks on to Management.

The Bay Tree Hotel is the perfect place for a quintessential English wedding. The venue is quaint and contains lots of traditional features including fire places, beams, flagstone flooring, quirky rooms, a beautiful oak staircase & 21 individually designed and very comfortable bedrooms! You get everything you could possibly need or want from this venue including a lovely village setting and pretty grounds/lawn area. We got married in the summer house which was idyllic! The food is awesome & the staff are exceptional! Please keep the Bay Tree in mind for future weekends in the country, meals out & definitely your dream wedding! Brilliant value for money, lots of added extras & an amazing experience!!!! Thanks to everyone at The Bay Tree for making our day so wonderful, and an extra special thank you to Mark & Alex for going above & beyond for us!

Visited for dinner with my parents (Sunday evening) and we found the food to be of a good quality, although nothing out of this world in terms of flavours and variety. A good selection of dishes for those looking for pub bistro style food, including the British classics, with a few options for allergies and intolerances. Service was great - food and drinks arrived quickly and presentation was good. The place was empty bar one other couple so made for a nice, relaxed meal but might be something to consider if you're looking for somewhere with a more vibrant feel.Prices very reasonable and one of the less expensive restaurants in Burford.

I took my mother here for lunch and although our drinks came quickly with the menus the food was not so quick. The starter arrived at 12pm and by 1pm we still had no main course. We sat for an hour and the bar was empty, the restaurant was empty , even the staff had disappeared. The starter was chicken liver pate. However it was bright pink and looked like the cheapest sort of pate that can be bought from a supermarket. The onion chutney was definitely out of a jar.As we didn't hang around for the main course, (we paid for what we'd eaten and gave up and left) I can't tell you about it. We weren't prepared to take the risk.

Had a three night stay at the Bell loved it! I extended our stay by a night and couldn’t get the same room as our original booking not disappointed in any way. Our first night was in Teasel a lovely room plenty of room with a nice shower wash room. Nice big comfortable bed. Friday and Saturday night we stayed in the room Hazel it’s situated above the barn. Amazing room with great views across countryside. This room is big loads of space to chill after a busy day in the Cotswolds. A super king sized bed and lovely shower /bathroom (huge bath). We weren’t going to dine at the Bell but as we had booked the extra night decided to have evening meal and breakfast on our first night. Both meals were delicious so also booked for Friday evening again delicious. The staff at the Bell are all very friendly and helpful hard working as whatever we asked nothing was too much trouble whatsoever . Thanks to all at the Bell for making our first visit to the Cotswolds a very special experience. Richard and Keeli x

Chip portions not consistent, seem to get fewer and fewer. Asked for battered sausage and it came without batter, second time in a row. Lost our custom.

Following a family emergency, I rang to cancel my table and was charged £70 without my permission. They will say it's on the website, however it wasn't prominent enough for me to notice during the booking process. We had been before and found the food OK and the staff a little arrogant but wanted to try again as hoped it was an anomaly as the surroundings are lovely. There will not be a third time, I have been told by several people that this business makes a loss, that is hearsay and I can't confirm that but after this cynical charge, it would seem they have to make money at all costs.

Always a great atmosphere, friendly welcome, great food and varied menu. The pizzas are amazing. We’ve been for Sunday roast before as it’s also incredible. Refreshing to enjoy a family run pub.
