Was tempted by the “ chunky veg soup with miso “ and ordered a large portion .( £7.95 ) . When it appeared it was mainly liquid with very few pieces of veg . In no way was it chunky and I felt ripped off as carrots / spuds not high cost items and no excuse . The gluten free bread very also a very small portion but nice . Also coffee good . However came away still hungry and would think twice about returning .

Coffee was good. Food not as described. Mushrooms on toast consisted of we past their best mushrooms (very black) rock hard butter and toast on the side. So not mushrooms on toast. Whole place could do with attention to details, table was sticky, overall I was disappointed with level of cleanliness. Staff rather indifferent, lady on the till very welcoming but after that???

LOVED this cafe ! Busy but in a nice way which is a good sign. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating; we sat outside and plenty of space around our table and nice setting. The coffee was good but the pastries were AMAZING! We had pain au raisin and an almond croissant. The smells coming from the kitchen were divine.

Three of us had a Burrito Bowl (Special), a Hummus Platter and a Japanese Salad Box. All freshly made and full of different flavours. Would definitely go back. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was the time it took to get our food. Almost an hour! However, it wasn't a problem for us as we were having a catch-up with our Granddaughter over lunch.

The reason I din't give this cafe 1 star is because I have been before, with a good experience. The cafe was extremely busy and we had to cram on a table with another couple. we ordered 2 breakfasts, as did them couple sitting with us. After a long, long time, I went up to check that our order was on it's way but they both had been forgotten along with the other couple's breakfasts. They were very apologetic but they came to our table 3 times to confirm our orders! When the food came (after a very long time) it was nice, and good value. However, the little staff there seemed to be young, very inexperienced and extremely disorganized.

Heard lots of about this Stroud institution: great ambience, lovely clientele and the chai latte was stunningly good. What let the cafe down was the laissez-faire approach of the young staff member taking orders at the till who was a little too slow to both acknowledge me waiting and then to take my order. Particularly important over lunchtime when time is tight for the local working customers who are on brief coffee stops, as was I. What would improve this young lady's customer service is give those waiting in the queue eye contact to acknowledge their presence and a be a little more conscious in her work. Instead over continuing a conversation with a young man for a little too long, she needs to multi-task and take the next customer's order should she want to chat with another customer for longer.... That said the latte was made and served to me at the table extremely quickly.

I arrived with two friends hoping for an enjoyable vegetarian breakfast. Service was slow, it started badly when a pair of middle aged hippies pushed into the queue. It seems who you know is more important than than how you queue. This was a theme of the visit - the correct knitwear would see you a score a coffee more quickly than the correct order in the queue. Options for breakfast were sparse, eggs Florentine or Shakshuka, both took over half an hour to arrive, measly portions , underseasoned and hard eggs. Coffee was ok.

We came here on a Saturday lunch visit whilst shopping at the wonderful Stroud Farmers Market. It was a great experience. We both had a big bowl of Tuscan White Bean and Tomato soup and we shared a toasted goats cheese, beetroot and red onion marmalade sandwich. It was a small menu, but better a simple menu, perfectly made, than a bigger choice of Lower quality dishes. We've dined in vegetarian establishments before but this takes the experience that mile further. It was a set meal for a charity event and all I can say is that I look forward to returning to sample more dishes. We started with a peanut based soup followed by an equally delicious rice, yam and plantain dish. These were head spinning - absolutely superb. I'm not a great one for desserts but, judging by the murmurs of appreciation (as well as the rolling of their eyes), my companions thoroughly enjoyed them. We will be back. How I miss Star Anise since we moved away. I used to visit at least once a week for coffee or a meal. The coffee is the best in Stroud and the food is home made quality, delicious and wholesome. Ingredients are mostly organic and locally sourced. The sourdough bread is divine and cooked daily and available to purchase by the loaf. Our recent favourites were the pakoras and lentil dhal, the menu changes daily. I have to admit the cakes are a bit stodgy (over healthy ingredients perhaps ;)) & the dessert section could benefit on the whole from a new lease of life. Overall it's a great place and I would highly recommend it! Lunchtimes can be busy but you can always book a table if needs be.

People were sat in the courtyard as the weather was so kind but we opted to sit inside. I chose a quiche which was already warm and ready to serve up. I then chose salad from the salad bar and it was very nice. Daughter chose salad plate. Granddaughter wanted tuna and sweetcorn without the bread and the staff duly obliged and with a twinkle in the waitress' eye an octopus was produced with the tuna making the body and the veg its legs. This was a daytime coffee with friends who had two young children. Great place for this type of visit. It is vibrant and the young waitress who was taking drinks outside was very friendly. It's clean and welcoming inside and out. However, this was all spoiled for me when I paid £2.80 for a slice of pecan pie. This would be fine if it was a slice big enough to feed an average adult.I was embarrassed when the lady behind the counter produced what I would call a sliver, around two inches thick at its widest and only the second piece of a huge pie.First world problems, I know, but if you want customer satisfaction, you need to be a tad more generous. No one in this financial climate likes being robbed at till point for greed. Kind of ironic considering the vibe of the place.

- and actually, in the case of the Star Anise, delicious. No, really. It takes a serious chef to make a big plateful of vegetables mouth-watering, but this guy does it, again and again. My picture of today’s menu didn’t come out that well, but I had feta & thyme potato cakes, with parsley & preserved lemon; with mushroom sauce, roast carrots, Jerusalem Artichokes, and braised cavolo nero. But one of this place’s charms is that there are invariably at least half a dozen little bits and pieces and pools of other things which don't seem to get mentioned, and can be very difficult to identify. For example, in this case, there were little slivers of something shocking pink, which tasted really interesting. As I say, for me, it’s hard to make a main dish out of vegetables; but when every mouthful contains different well-balanced tastes and textures, it can really succeed. I do find myself going to Star Anise fairly frequently instead of my more meatist haunts.I've included a picture of my meal, and how much was left on the plate when I’d finished.Oh, and a couple of previous snacks there too – the toasted feta (and about 15 other things) sandwiches are always good ;-)Big selection of pastry too. And decent coffee.

The choice of food is always exciting - vegetarian cuisine at it's best. I often get a take away for lunch and grab a gluten free cake on my way out. A real treat and a proper Stroud eatery. Keep up the great food and cracking service, Star Anise!

We had a good meal - great to have the option of a small fish & chips for husband with a small appetite. Rather a lot of children despite it being school hours, which was a bit aggravating but obviously can't be helped. We commented on the huge cobwebs above our seats, which hopefully have been addressed now.

Our family went to the Cafe to hear Benjamin Day play a solo cello recital of Bach Suites. Very unusual, and nice mulled wine and the Cafe's interesting natural food snacks at the intermission. (Loads of other reviews tell you what to expect here).

Cozy place for a herbal cuppa. Some people like their doughy pastry. It's a hub for all sorts of activities. I go more for the social aspect and the (organic etc) quality of the food than for the taste of the food. Staff can be friendly or grumpy, depends on the day.

Been quite a while since I visited, so it was good to find that absolutely nothing had changed – because nothing should, in this case. To summarise: this is a vegetarian (but mostly vegan) restaurant. As an enthusiastic carnivore, I’m never going to eat there every day – but if I fancy a vegan meal, I wouldn’t look anywhere else. It’s easy to make meat taste good – much harder to do it with grass, leaves and wood shavings. But the chef here really excels; there’s so much variety on each plate that you can’t get bored. Unfortunately they wiped the blackboard menu today just before I was going to photograph it, so I can’t tell you exactly what I ate… but it was called a “Mexican Platter”.It was, approximately, black bean chilli in a little pot, served with a very interesting salad, containing (at least), various leaves, olives, beetroot (now I HATE the stink of pickled beetroot, but this guy uses it raw, different kinds, and puts in only enough to make everything else interesting), a nice dressing (happily mayonnaise-free), and I think golden beetroot and pomegranate seed salsa. On the side were roast strips of sweet potato, and tortilla chips. I had a nice Americano with it.Great stuff – unreservedly recommended.Service excellent too, by the way

This place is has to be the most authentic 'Stroud' experience, full of biodynamic yoga people it's like a little festival of beautiful food, really healthy but also very tasty and super fresh. The coffee is also really good with the baristas showing off their skills, Everything is organic homemade and with real passion, I work in the industry and I can see they don't cut any corners, if I'm in the area I make a detour to visit, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do

I only visited here for coffee and cake but what coffee and cake it was. The place has a really lovely cosy feel to it and I really wish I had visited at lunch time as I liked the look of the non-cake foods on offer.I would another excuse to visit Stroud and go here again.

Something very Stroudy about Star Anise. Good for coffee, great for sourdough toast. A place to chat or just skulk in a corner with a tablet or book - no-one will mind.

Hot chocolate and tasty cakes, with other more substantial dishes always very tempting too - the quality doesn't falter! A perfect place for a break when town-centre shopping, or just to meet friends for a good catch-up natter in a warm, welcoming, relaxed atmosphere - and eat rather more than you had intended to!

I love their coffee and cakes. I am not a vegetarian but last time I visited I ordered a small bowl of salad which was plentiful, beautifully dressed and included a varied selection of vegetables, seeds and nuts. It really was a meal in itself- excellent value.

Last time visited “ small Americana “ was 1.95. Then 2.10. Today……2.60. No reason despite costs…..to elevate to this price… There are unfortunately not a lot of “ good coffee shops in Dursley” could do with “Costa” or Coffee1 “ Wake up call……for these stupid prices…..if you want to “ stay open” I’d review all your prices/ ….or you soon will be “ gone” No one wants to fell “ conned” last visit for me!!

It is unfortunate I have to write this review after being one of Tomari G’s biggest fans previously. We arrived Friday evening to extremely bad service and without half the menu available. The waitress basically ignored us for 20 minutes. When she arrived they had no Rose wine. When we went to order they had no sushi ! One of the main reasons we visit!! We then asked for Salmon Poke Bowl, this was not available, We asked what was available the answer was just Ramen. I have also had a few friends visit who expressed there concern on the lack of menu available recently. I understand that this has happened since they have been taken over. We visited when it was the previous owners and it was amazing. My advice, try somewhere different. Nagomi in Cheltenham is amazing so we will be visiting that restaurant instead In future.
