The Star in East Hertfordshire

After lunch here today with ourc17 month old grandson I was told there was no baby changing table in the toilets (it's advertised as a family friendly pub)so as a 68 year old grandmother I had to change my grandson on the FLOOR of the disabled toilet.I then disposed of his UNSOILED nappy(it was just wet) wrapped it over and place it in the flip lid bin in the toilet) The manager then came over to me and informed me in front of a FULL restaurant to remove the DIRTY nappy from the toilet bin and takecit home"We are a pub"we do jot have baby changing facilities"???.It was not dirty and I felt humiliated in front of the other diners.I shall not return.

Unfortunately we didn't get to try the food service or atmosphere! As we liked the look of the pub and saw it was dog friendly we went in the garden and sat down to have a nice lunch and a drink after our long dog walk, only to be told that we couldn't have food as we hadn't booked! It was about 12.40 on a Wednesday afternoon and it didn't appear to be that busy. There were only two of us and I said we weren't in a rush but all they could offer us was from the sandwich menu but not before 1.30pm! It is not obvious on the website that one has to book, only on scrolling through the description of the food & drink does it say at the end that booking is advisable, and you cannot book a table online so one would have to call the pub to book which is really unusual, its a pub not a restaurant! There is a sign on the bar basically saying if you haven't booked then you may not get food, but by then you've already sat down and settled as it isn't a wait to be seated set up! So we left disappointed and hungry and went to another pub which was a lot busier but were still serving food and we spent over £70 on food and drink…. The Star’s loss !!

Reasonable prices, great service, good food and a wonderful garden. The perfect place to spend a summer's afternoon

We went to the Star as the destination of the DGR ride, the staff were brilliant the cask beer was excellent and the burger and chips for a £5 was definitely not a rip off it was great 👍 well done to all the staff at the Star!

I have eaten in The Star many times over the years and am a "regular" there. Yesterday was the first time I can remember going for Sunday lunch. It was a small celebration with my family for my birthday. Can I say the roast dinner was magnificent, tasty with loads of meat. I know The Star probably doesn't need yet another glowing review, but this is by way of a thank you for being brilliant and always keeping your standards sky high. I will always recommend it for the absolute best pub food. Ps although I had the roast yesterday, the pies are to die for. Excellent local pub with great value lovely food.

Wow, what a great find. The pub/restaurant is brilliant. Excellent food and service. Great menu and a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Dog friendly in the bar, with plenty of room between tables for our two large Labradors (there are only three tables so you need to book). I cannot praise the staff highly enough, they make you feel you are one of their regulars. The food is all home made (including the chips), fresh vegetables. It was so good we have been for a meal twice in a week. Well done to you all.

Lovely garden but make sure you book the table in advance otherwise they won't serve you any food.

Been in Puckeridge for the last 4 weeks. Looking after family home . Had a great time in the sun lovely atmosphere staff made me feel so welcome. Spent lunch times with Brenda food amazing. I off back north on Sunday. When I back down I'll certainly visit .looking forward to seeing you all. 😀

Nice pub, friendly staff, and have their own car park. 9 of us met and ate, and seemed satisfied with their meal, I had the homemade steak pie, very enjoyable

What a beautiful pub. Stunning gardens with the backdrop of relaxing birdsong. Good food with a wide selection of beers. Very pleasant staff. Be sure to visit the very interesting church opposite.

Just pop in , asking nicely if they have any table for 2, for dinner and I've been told that no food serving on Tuesday. Bit surprised coz on the site is saying they serving food everyday. Quite disspointed, I feel this was because I'm not local.. And coz my accent... the owner should hire someone with a better customer service then him. In can't reply back to the message so I will write it here: I'm 100%sure I heard well that you are not serving food!! My husband was also with me and he heard the same thing and he had the same feeling that we weren't welcomed.. We were there yesterday, at 19.08. I know very well because then I called the White Heart pub to check if there is same situation , and they were very welcoming. Anyways, I will avoid the place... . Have a good day and hopefully your customer service will improve.

Booked Sunday lunch. The set menu was a 3 options each course. However, on arrival we were advised that a main & a dessert course were unavailable. No substitute for the n/a main. Dissapointed.

I've known this pub for many years and it has now become a cold unwelcoming place with similar staff.Will never return even though its my local.

A chance encounter on a road trip, we popped in for a late lunch without a reservation. They were friendly, helpful and efficient, fitting us in and feeding us promptly. The food was good, made from high quality ingredients. We had prawn cocktails, served with delicious brown bread, and Caesar salads, beautifully dressed. Many thanks for looking after two hungry travellers!

Great place for lunch and staff are really helpful. Nice range of dishes on the menu from ham or gammon and eggs, fish and chips to mushroom stroganoff and daily specials. Plenty of parking and comfortable dining and socialising inside and out.

6 of us, including a non-meat eater, had a great lunch in the new dining room. Everything was good, from drinks to desserts. The Star can always be relied upon for a good value high quality meal. Thanks very much.

This is our first visit since the lockdown and by heaven's it's even better than before. The new dining room is tastefully decorated with comfortable seating. The Green King ales are superb and the food excellent. My liver and bacon was sublime just perfectly cooked with a lovely jus. Our waitress was helpful and friendly and the whole evening delightful.

My granny and two of her friends visited the star for a birthday meal. My grandmothers friend has a medical condition meaning she can only eat small amount so asked for a small portion of risotto and was dismissively told if she should look at the kids menu then and subsequently felt forced to order a Mac and cheese. I am absolutely disgusted. Train your staff to be respectful and accommodating.

We've had 2 meals in the Star and we feel they should change their name to the 5 Star , great welcome to total strangers and fantastic food .

Excellent service and superb food

I very much enjoy coming here for their Sunday roasts which are tasty with great portions, and the space has improved dramatically, as they've added a spacious extension - a big improvement on the cramped space it was before where you could barely move. The food is delicious although I'd like to see a bit more variety with desserts, the delivery is fast, and the staff are friendly. The tables could be a little bigger - I'm only 5'2" and I still bash elbows with the person sitting next to me. They have plenty of space now, so updating to bigger tables would be a huge plus. Overall, a great place to visit and I highly recommend it.

Great pub and food. Booked for our Sawbridgeworth U3A walking group and was made most welcome. Everyone enjoyed the food and drink and the staff were excellent. We will definitely be going back! Would 100% recommend

At the end of a long country walk it was a pleasure to slake one's thirst at this Inn. As well as the usual largers, they had an alluring selection of draft beers, which worked for me. I also enjoyed their pie of the day which was steak and Stilton on the day - so I really lucked out, thanks to my brother's local knowledge. The issue now is finding a pub for next month's walk, as it's my turn to choose!

Passing through Standon I spotted the star, after asking if they were dog friendly, which they are. I ordered the beef pie with mash and vegetables. I certainly wasn't disappointed, one of the best pies I've had for years. Excellent and if I'm in the area again I shall certainly revisit the Star. I also had a short walk around Standon down to the river by the old Paper Mill with my dogs. Lovely place and I shall return for a better look in the Spring.

Lunch with work friends, we d pre ordered which was good as all meals came up together-there were 10 of us .All food was well cooked and staff were friendly and efficient.

I went as a group of 12, including 5 children on Saturday, New Year's Day, for lunch. We pre-booked including which mains the adults wanted to eat. The staff were lovely. The food was delicious. We sat around 2 tables indoors but had the benefit of being able to take the children into the outside space. It is really large and the play area suited our 2 to 7 year olds. I'd definitely return.

Myself, my father and grandad all went for a meal last Tuesday. I had the fish with the Prawn Velouté and a starter of fig and blue cheese (although one fig wasn't enough in my opinion). It was all very tasty and washed down well with some Abbott ales. Lovely setting and friendly staff. Thank you.

A perfect country venue. Food and atmosphere amazing. Very friendly helpful staff. Though get there early as they run out of things quickly. But I think this is a good sign of a place only serving fresh food. Enjoy.

Beautiful old building with a stunning interior. A menu with something to please every tastebud and an amazing gin collection on offer. The food was delicious and great service by the staff.

Fabulous Sunday lunch which needs to be booked weeks in advance but is well worth it, also has a nice restaurant in the week.

Lovely old type of pub with a lovely large garden. Good service, lots of beers on tap. Car park a little small, takes about 8 to 10 cars! Pub is in a very nice village opposite a lovely Church.

Had Sunday at this pub yesterday It was our first visit and sat that the food was well cooked. The beer was. Good as was the wine also. All in all a very pleasent experience and excellent service. We shall certainly returm and can recommend a visit

My family met at The Star to celebrate a birthday. The food was excellent. The service perfect! Nothing was too much trouble. It was a boiling hot day but lovely and cool inside the 'beamy' pub. We had desserts outside under the shade.

Lovely spot, reasonably priced lunch menu speedy service, and they knew exactly how to deal with a cycling group with individual bills anticipated and water bottles filled. Well done The Star, we'll be back soon.

Excellent little village pub. Lovely garden and friendly staff. Our lunch was very good, my rich beef pie amongst the best I've had. Good beer, tried the local Green King bitter mixed with the stronger Abbot ale.
