The Star in East Hertfordshire

I have eaten in The Star many times over the years and am a "regular" there. Yesterday was the first time I can remember going for Sunday lunch. It was a small celebration with my family for my birthday. Can I say the roast dinner was magnificent, tasty with loads of meat. I know The Star probably doesn't need yet another glowing review, but this is by way of a thank you for being brilliant and always keeping your standards sky high. I will always recommend it for the absolute best pub food. Ps although I had the roast yesterday, the pies are to die for. Excellent local pub with great value lovely food.

Great lunch in a friendly atmosphere and good selection on the menu. The staff are on hand to assist. Easy parking

Wow, what a great find. The pub/restaurant is brilliant. Excellent food and service. Great menu and a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Dog friendly in the bar, with plenty of room between tables for our two large Labradors (there are only three tables so you need to book). I cannot praise the staff highly enough, they make you feel you are one of their regulars. The food is all home made (including the chips), fresh vegetables. It was so good we have been for a meal twice in a week. Well done to you all.

6 of us, including a non-meat eater, had a great lunch in the new dining room. Everything was good, from drinks to desserts. The Star can always be relied upon for a good value high quality meal. Thanks very much.

This is our first visit since the lockdown and by heaven's it's even better than before. The new dining room is tastefully decorated with comfortable seating. The Green King ales are superb and the food excellent. My liver and bacon was sublime just perfectly cooked with a lovely jus. Our waitress was helpful and friendly and the whole evening delightful.

Best profiteroles I've ever had!! And at 65 years old I've had a few! We were a party of 6, good food good, good beer & good service.

My granny and two of her friends visited the star for a birthday meal. My grandmothers friend has a medical condition meaning she can only eat small amount so asked for a small portion of risotto and was dismissively told if she should look at the kids menu then and subsequently felt forced to order a Mac and cheese. I am absolutely disgusted. Train your staff to be respectful and accommodating.

Lovely new restaurant been added with great seating and space. The service is always fantastic and the food is delicious.

Beautiful old building with a stunning interior. A menu with something to please every tastebud and an amazing gin collection on offer. The food was delicious and great service by the staff.

Fabulous Sunday lunch which needs to be booked weeks in advance but is well worth it, also has a nice restaurant in the week.

Perfect! A lovely old pub, with a view of a beautiful church and friendly owners/management. We had a great lunch and a few pints of Abbots ale. My Turkey, leek and ham pie was really good. Thank you.

The food is great and the staff are just wonderful - offering to hold my baby for me while I ate lunch and keeping my food warm while I got her off to sleep. Makes such a difference to a tired new mum! Thank you so much

My family met at The Star to celebrate a birthday. The food was excellent. The service perfect! Nothing was too much trouble. It was a boiling hot day but lovely and cool inside the 'beamy' pub. We had desserts outside under the shade.

Excellent little village pub. Lovely garden and friendly staff. Our lunch was very good, my rich beef pie amongst the best I've had. Good beer, tried the local Green King bitter mixed with the stronger Abbot ale.

This was my 4th lunchtime visit to this pub since discovering it in December 2020. It’s conveniently located on several hikes/ cycle routes (both on and off road). I’ve never bothered writing a review before for any establishment but I thought the superb food and service at this place deserves a special mention. Today ( 19th May) myself and 3 friends arrived after a long and very muddy off-road cycle trip. We were caked in mud but the staff were extremely accommodating, ( even offering to tumble dry some wet gear). The food and drinks were fantastic and all my friends were impressed by the quality of the fayre and friendly service. Nothing was too much trouble for the team. It truly is a great pub. I’ve recommended it to others who have visited and they have been equally impressed. From the battered cod to the bacon and liver, every meal people have ordered has received favourable comments. The venue is also great with plenty of sheltered outdoor seating and indoor availability ( now we can go indoors). Well worth a visit. You won’t be disappointed. Steve Marriott

Just had Sunday lunch. Absolutely everything first class. So good 👌. Service spot on and the food perfectly cooked. Thoroughly recommend.

A large family group was well catered for under the 'COVID 19' conditions in the lovely surroundings of the tasteful new extension. The pie of the day was Venison and was extremely delicious with well cooked and plentiful fresh vegetables. The others in the party had different choices but none were disappointed with their choices.Sweets were varied and enjoyable, too.I observed the scrupulous and careful cleaning down of the furniture after other diners had left their tables. Very impressed.

We met up as a family in the extensive garden at The Star The table were very well spaced for social distancing The menu was pretty extensive and had childrens portions too . All came out hot and swiftly and staff were very efficient.. Thoroughly enjoyed our evening

Still very busy despite the Corona virus scare, we decided to have dinner with friends before self isolating. The food was lovely the waitresses were really good and very helpful and the restaurant mood generally was light inspite of the threat hanging over everyone .The Blitz spirit?A lovely evening.

Visit for lunchtime meal,but we're not advised of all the building work going on,drilling,banging,etc,workmen walking into the dining room,would not have bothered if we had been told,totally spoils our meal.

Lovely cosy atmospheric pub, where the staff are friendly and helpful, a total joy. In a party of six, everyone really enjoyed their food. On a stormy night it was a great place to be, we will most definitely return.

My friend and i decided to go for lunch to a new place ,so we went to the "Star" at a small village called Standon very close to the A10. Spacious car park and opposite a very pretty church. The ambience was lovely and the locals were very friendly,the food was hot and delicious the service was second to none. Great menu of local produce . If visiting you must book as it IS busy which is always a good sign.

Lovely country pub with its own parking at the rear and a few spaces adjacent to the main building. Friendly service and good choice of menu. Good range of beers. Nice fresh food We visited in new year on a Friday lunchtime it was busy. NB they stop serving at 2.30pm. The stroganoff was rich deep flavoured and glossy. Lasagne was filling as well as normal pub fare - burgers etc. Starters were plentiful.Service is attentive but not rushed recommended.

Nice olde world ambience with good food drinks and wines at reasonable prices well worth a visit, will be back again soon

What a first class dinner excellent food lovely staff , a absolutely lovely experience. This pub food is a very high standard better than most local restaurants.

Had a pleasant weekend walk combined with lunch at the Star. We had some very tasty warm baguettes with salad as we hadn't booked in advance for a roast. The beer was very pleasant too.

Called in on the off chance early Saturday evening we had not booked.We were made to feel very welcome and they were able to fit the four of us in.Not having been here before we just ordered what we thought might be good and we were not disappointed, every one of us had a meal to remember.We will certainly return to soak in the lovely family run pub with an atmosphereto envied.

The Star is an unpretentious village high street pub, the likes of which is sadly becoming an endangered species. On the wall by the bar are their recent awards for beer quality, and their food is equally high standard - all home made and locally sourced as far as possible. My beef bourguignon was rich and velvety and the veg was cooked al dente, not the usual pub-standard 'boiled to death'. My wife's beef lasagne was one of the best either of us has had in a restaurant. She didn't have room for dessert but I'm glad I squeezed in the bread and butter pudding with custard. I normally avoid Greene King pubs: I don't like the brewery and the food is usually trucked-in frozen then microwaved. But if I lived nearby I'd be very happy to have The Star as my local.

this is an excellent pub/restaurant. The service we received was fantastic and it was for a group of 12. Well done for an excellent service polite staff and a lovely atmosphere it was great for our 25th wedding anniversary. Would highly recommend and food excellent

Love it here. You know what you are going to get. Decent food in a local pub. I regularly come here with friends now.

We arrived without a booking with five young children 30 min before they started serving food, which we should have perhaps planned better, but rather than maybe cooking for us a bit earlier or trying to squeeze us in, we were told they would not be able to serve us until after all their booked guests had eaten, which would have been past bedtime for all the children. I just feel most other restaurants and people would have made more of an effort to accommodate us, so we did not have to travel elsewhere

Had a meal with a friend this evening and can honestly recommend this lovely pub. The food was excellent and the outside gardens are stunning

Always good food well cooked and prepared, happy staff. Plenty of choices including fish dishes. Good choice of ales from the hand pumps.

Absolutely excellent service and the food was amazing - hot and just something else and the clientele was absolutely fantastic and can not fault. Lovely girls too and couldn't do enough for us. Definitely recommend but you need to book in advance x

We went as a group of twelve and every meal was delicious and promptly served! Pie week this week and a vast list of pies were on offer! Clearly homemade with fresh ingredients! A selections of ales on tap, large gin collection and a top wine list! A great local pub! Have been a few times and will continue to do so. 10/10

I was taken for my Bithday by my son and Spouse today and all I can say is the food is perfect, My Mother was a Cook years ago and the food I had was a reminder of her exallent cookery (Proper Cooking) not out of a packet. If I was not so far away I would visit over and over but if I was invited again I would not second think the reply, fantastic Food service was pretty good although I did fell the young lady who was brill was under the cosh at times from other customers which I felt very unfair.

I wanted to celebrate my birthday with my family in a traditional English pub, enjoying a great Sunday lunch with real ale on tap. We were a party of 9 (5 vegetarians) with 3 children and we were all so pleased with our choices and very professional service throughout.

We visited The Star on Christmas Eve for lunch and drinks. As always the food was great. Service was brilliant. Love visiting here. Would 100% recommend.

From starters to puds the food is excellent. Our third visit included fillet of venison, beef stroganoff,. started with tempura prawns -fresh and perfectly cooked. Service from the young staff was also excellent.

We sat in very warm sunshine and our order was delivered in 16 minutes, well within the acceptable timescale for freshly cooked food. The staff who took our order and the lady who served it at the table did their job efficiently and with a warm smile.

What an amazing little pub hubby and i we’re out for a random drive pulled in at 2 minutes to two (they stop food at two) were able to order no problem and were happily surprised it was seafood week. Well the Cullen skink soup was the best I have tasted and the mussels amazing and such a great portion size. We will defiantly return and recommend

Simply the best family run pub in the area. Great food, cheerful and efficient service in great atmosphere. Well kept beers, good selection of gin and whiskey. Good garden in summer. Did I miss anything?!

We do a monthly walk around Herts with a group of friends and look forward to a good pub lunch at the end. The Star at Standon is one of my favourites. Nice large outdoor sitting area for those who prefer fresh air or with young family. Warm closy traditional pub inside with a dart board at the public bar. Reasonably priced traditional pub menu. We have been to The Star three times, and impressed each time on how consistently excellent the cooking is. The homemade steak and ale pie with well hung, chunky Devon beef, with a variety of seasonal vegetables cooked with impeccable timing, meshed

We visited the Star as we were early for a wedding we were attending across the road. Pub was very busy with other guests. Service was ok but staff vefy inflexible over people leaving their cars during wedfing despite the boost to trade they enjoyed

Checking out a local walk for my young ?? friends we had lunch at The Star at Standon and the great greeting as soon as we entered together with jokes from the customers in the attractive bar was a good indication of what we had hoped for. An excellent menu with wonderful vegetables (a selection of four and perfectly cooked with the best calves liver i have enjoyed)...we have been back twice since and it was always perfect).

Traditional old hotel which is a bit tired in some areas but full of charm. Room was comfortable and breakfast not too bad.

Lovely friendly atmosphere, staff very welcoming and friendly. There is a very nice, very large garden to the rear with a large decked smoking area (not that I smoke but good to let people know). I had the Halloumi salad which was extremely delicious, for afters I chose the freshly home made profiteroles which were absolutely delicious. Well worth a visit!

We had four meals at lunchtime in this lovely pub but unfortunately the food was poor. The scampi contained very little scampi and the new potatoes were undercooked with an odd taste, the sea bass was unpleasant. We complained and were offered a free dessert. What a shame as the staff were very helpful and the pub always looks delightful.

Very nice pub and the food is lovely but we can never get in as you are always busy!! We got in last week after trying about 5 times to book, you need to get yourself a larger dining area :)

One of the nicest pubs I've ever been to. The food was lovely, the atmosphere was brill and the owner was absolutely incredible! He runs the place so well and is amazing with every customer that walks in! Thank you!

The Male that owns this place is horrendously rude. The food is awful and the beer is flat. Don’t know how it’s still open!

My colleagues and I popped in for lunch after a business trip, and after noticing that they did not have salads on the menu, decided to ask for a ham salad baguette (£5.95) without the baguette (just a bit more salad). Upon paying we disputed the overall cost of 2 diet cokes, soda and lime, 2 ham salads and a cheese sandwich, coming to £29.95. The barmaid, who was rude and had an extremely bad attitude, condescendingly explained that salad is more expensive than eggs, before stomping off to fetch the chef. The chef then explained that we were being charged for a main meal of ham, 2 eggs and chips (£8.95 each). He also wanted to point out that salad is more expensive than chips....and more expensive than egg and chips...even though we saved them 2 baguettes!? After debating for a bit, and asking if he would pay nearly £9 for 3 slices of ham and a medium sized salad (to which he couldn't answer!), I paid the bill and left completely infuriated. Not only was the price and their reasoning behind it ridiculous, but their bad customer service, unjustifiable attitude and unwillingness to even suggest or accept a compromise, makes the insult even greater! Is a shame as we've been here a few times, its in a lovely village and has a nice garden. But as for our recent experience, we will not be returning.

We have eaten here with a large group before Christmas and also as a couple - every time the welcome has been really friendly and the food is excellent. Good menu choice with a specials board, best to book.

A genuine British pub, local people serving great food well kept beer. Not pretentious or gastro and better for it. They even accept dirty dogs in the public bar!

Visited whilst on holiday visiting family. Great service, very welcoming atmosphere and plenty of options to choose from. I personally selected the homemade pie, which I must say was a pleasure to eat and thoroughly enjoyed it. Overall a great choice for any occasion.

Six of us had dinner at The Star last night, it was busy and there was a really good atmosphere. The service was good and the waitress jolly and helpful. The food was excellent, everyone was impressed and we will definitely be coming back... We'll make sure we book so we're not disappointed.

visited last night, it was fab, buzzy little traditional old fashioned English pub. The menu was great, a good selection, not too big and something for everyone. The food was excellent, nothing fancy but typical pub grub at a very reasonable price. Nice wine list at good prices. The waitress was lovely, super efficient, friendly and helpful...to sum up we loved it and will be back.

My wife and I went with friends one Sunday recently to The Star. We had been once a few years ago and enjoyed it, so we were keen to see what it was like now.

Visited here on a Friday night with family. The waitress wasn’t welcoming she made us feel as if it was a local pub for local people and we live within walking distance, but she did her job effectively, the order was taken and the food arrived in good time. The food was tasty and reasonably priced.

I find too many pubs these days are getting overly fancy and "chefy" with their food. This was not the case here, a great menu and specials board, making a real challenge to choose when everything sounded great. I went for the paella which was really tasty, others in our party chose the fish and chips, and liver & bacon, both looked very apertising.

Traditional village pub with a warm welcome, the food in the restaurant is not cheap but is very good, would recommend if you want good food in a great location.

Have visited The Star twice recently. The first time was for a Sunday roast, which was delicious. There was certainly plenty to eat, and a vast choice of vegetables. The staff are very friendly and willing to help/advise. The whole feel of The Star is very much a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Interesting reading on the walls about The Star from old newspapers.

Great and well priced food, varied menu. Beer is always on point. Great atmosphere, a must visit if you are nearby.

Have visited this pub on many occasions, the last visit being for a Christmas get together with friends. As there were a number of us our orders had been taken in advance but despite this there was a considerable wait for our food which was brought out one plate at a time. Whilst I appreciate the limit of staff it was a shame that one end of the table had nearly finished their meal before others were served. The food was worth waiting for however and was very tasty and nicely presented. The Cajun Chicken pasta was very tasty and a generous portion being served with garlic bread. The Hake was enjoyed by all and was well cooked. The least enjoyed was the duck breast which came with gravy rather than the fruity sauce it needed. The puds were tasty and overall a pleasant meal.

Had a family gathering for an event.. The Landlord closed off one side of the pub for us and laid on a lovely buffet. Lovely friendly atmosphere.

Arrived here for a local lunch at 12pm, I do understand that's opening time but the truly frosty reception from the lady behind the bar was most unwelcoming. We didn't stay for lunch or even drinks, there's simply too much competition to stay and spend money somewhere you are made to feel very unwelcome.

If you like a british pub that does no frills quality food, This is for you. Had the Liver and Bacon with a thick onion gravy. Top notch!

This was my first time visiting The Star but I went with friends from the village who had been there many, many times. I would certainly go there again and recommend it. It's very nice looking from the outside and very quaint inside. There is ample parking. The staff were friendly. We had some drinks to begin with out in the garden as it was a lovely evening. There were a few vegetarian options and the food was good with decent servings. None of us tried any of the desserts but they had an interesting selection. I shall definitely do a repeat visit in the future.

Carvery. Sometimes it’s the very word that can give you an uncertain start, even before you’ve ordered. How long have the vegetables been around? Do I really want a flabby and forgotten Yorkshire pud? Exactly what is in that gravy…?

We dropped by for an impromptu lunch as The Star had been recommended by some friends. The attentive service made us feel welcome and freshly cooked food arrived within 20 minutes. The vegetarian linguine was very light and perfectly cooked. My husband ordered sea bass with seasonal vegetables which he enjoyed. The selection of wines was varied and the real ale all contributed to a thoroughly enjoyable lunch.

Family run pub that offers a traditional English pub environment with a good menu cooked to a high standard. The garden is a great place to eat (weather permitting) and if you just want to talk,drink or watch over the kids in the play area. One of the best in Herts

Firstly to thank the owner again for helping to accommodate me and my group.

Lunchtime catch up with old friend. Chose the Star as about halfway between us, looked on website and seemed ideal. Pleasant enough pub, clean and tidy. Food was ok, the service was a bit non existent.. When we walked in, were ignored for some time by person behind bar. She was obviously sorting something out, but a quick "Hi, I'll be with you in a minute" is always preferable to being ignored.

We were just passing through the area when we decided to drop into The Star. The staff were "ever so friendly" and immediately made us feel welcome. We did not have a dinner reservation but the Proprietor, nevertheless, managed to accommodate us and, I must add, the food was delicious! If you are ever in the area don't hesitate to visit them - the reasonable prices and excellent service will make it worth your while!!

I met a friend for lunch at the Star in December and also this week. I've been impressed both times by the food. It's a great place to get really genuinely good home cooked traditional English food (not the kind of stuff that's come out of a freezer and been chucked in the fryer or microwave, but food that's clearly been made on site from fresh ingredients). In December I had a traditional beef suet pudding and most recently I had venison and bacon stew with dumplings. There's a crumble of the day and a sponge of the day with good amounts of custard.

A pleasant pub in the daytime but even after taking family & friends for a few times for lunch & the staff being polite & helpful during the day it is not friendly & welcoming in the evening.

Everything about the Star is great. From the moment you walk through the door you feel as if you are in a special place. It has an quirky old fashion feel but the staff are very friendly and the food is to die for at extremely competitive prices. The standard Menu provides a varied choice for most people but the Specials are worth trying. Once you've visited you will keep wanting to come back.

We booked this well in advance for a reunion and it couldn't have been better. We also ordered our food in advance and we had no complaints at all. Loved the atmosphere, really popular small village pub. Good food, good value well done!

Went for a long walk around this Public House with the dog and decided to have a spot of lunch on Saturday 28th November 2015.
