This pub should be advoided at all costs. The staff are very unfriendly and rude they ignor you at the bar. Go to the Bell in Hoddesdon instead

Regular visitor to this spoons since it opened as this is our regular and nearest pub. Always had a rapport with Rachel the previous manager and some of the bar staff and door staff but they have all recently changed and you can see a drop in the standard of the place which is a shame. We will continue to visit as it is local but would like to see an improvement in some of these points so it can return to its former glory!

Really sad meal served today, under cooked chips and even sadder sliver of lettuce and onion. Prices are regularly increased and potions size is getting smaller.

40 pounds for 3 meals and drinks was served my food and the gravy boat had no handle and no body cared how can a waitress sever the food to the table and the chef put the gravy in a broken boat and not cares about it

The majority of the staff are not friendly and some are rude. Most members of staff are unable to pull a full pint and when asked politely to top it up they snatch the glass off the bar and give you attitude. No 'please' or 'thank you' when exchanging money. The pub itself is quite pleasant but the staff seriously let the pub down!

Awful steak. Looked good .. couldn’t cut it! Awful service too. Couldn’t get attention of any staff. No attention at all, ear pieces in, walked straight past. Husband had nice mixed grill. Stood at bar for ages to explain about steak, not one member of staff spoke to me. Too busy playing some childish games behind bar .. so I went back to my table

Drink and food are good. Waiters bringing the food are really helpful and professional. Just wish the bar staff would smile and interact a little. It doesn't matter how much you say please and thank you, you get little response.

Some staff education might be needed. It took forever to convince the bar tender that Shiraz is a red wine, he then couldn't find it on the till; then couldn't find the pump even though I was pointing at the bottle. All carpets are covered in napkins and other rubbish and my glass was covered in 💄 lipstick.

Who doest love a spoons, has a nice big beer garden and the food is what you’d expect food and drink very fairly priced for location. The pub itself has a great history.

Now this is a tricky review because there are so many nice things about this pub. Great atmosphere, excellent WC facilties, nice seating and drinks are great value. However, visited yesterday evening (Saturday 29th April 2023) with a couple of friends and just as my friend went to the toilet, I noticed something out of the corner of my eye run across the floor. It was a bloody big rat!! This place serves food and having rats are not good!!! I reported this to security who called one of the managers over and told her. She said they would get exterminators in. Whether they do or not, who knows, but until this is resolved, I will not be eating or drinking here again. Shame as it is a nice pub.

People love to have a drink and a bite to eat.the star does that.it's reasonable, prices are great for pensioners, and youngsters and families.....the staff are wonderful....Rschel, claire, and Simon, what a gentleman......the history of the Star is fascinating too...10/10....

Working in the area, always looking for Wetherspoons to eat in when working away from home, service is very good but food was very poor and over cooked, ordered a steak was like chewing a trainer,

Both breakfast just had cold bacon we had to complain also the coffee cup I was given had residents of chocolate on it from a previous use

4 stars na bread was to hard under cooked and curry need more chicken and need clean the tables and more staff slow service

Ordering via the QR code was fairly simple. The table was very tacky and dirty. The cutlery was also not that clean. I used an antibacterial wipe on the table and was surprised given the height of health and safety, how grubby it was. The panini was nice and reasonably priced. The drink I ordered came in a can, however the top was really dusty, like it had been stored on a floor for weeks.

There were 6 of us celebrating a retired colleagues Birthday. Under the circumstances of semi lockdown it was a great afternoon. Top marks to the wonderful staff who looked after us so well.

Just came in for a quick drink with family, felt very uncomfortable getting dirty looks from the staff one in particular then she started looking at us with another member of staff talking about us . Terrible service I think she might of been the manger as she was dressed in all black . Apart from that there was one young girl who was lovely serving us behind the bar . All the rest had attitude and made me and my family feel very uncomfortable so we left

I recently visited the star and I have to say that as a spoons in Hertfordshire goes, it’s not as good as the king James. I feel that the bouncers where rude and disgraceful. It was cramped and didn’t have a good atmosphere that the king James offers. King James is 100 times better

On entering there was a heavy musty smell. As my family live nearby they knew this was the open fire burning logs. It was a little cloying. It made our eyes sting. Maybe the reason for that should be investigated Someone went to the bar and ordered drinks but was not asked if we were eating which would have allowed the offer of a free drink with food I wouldn’t ordinarily eat at a Wetherspoon pub as I have only done so twice and it’s never been good. This was not my choiceThe food arrived. I had the chicken and rib combo. The food was warm at best but the left hand side of the plate was very, very hot indeedThe chicken was tough and the edges could not be cut. The ribs were puny and more bone than meatI’m sure this is ideal for some people but not for me. I’m of the opinion that it doesn’t matter if your chips cost £1 or £5 a portion they should be hot and they should be edible. Anything you pay for should be eaten because it’s nice. Not over or under cooked. Certainly not cold or warmI understand this is food prepared way in advance the dinged to serve but, honestly, the plate being hot is not indicative of the food being the same way. How long before someone is really ill from poorly heated chicken or pork???

I have to say that Michael is a fantastic addition to your team. Nicole is also a lovely memeber of staff. Well done Wetherspoons Hoddesdon.

Love this place the history and open fires on a cold morning very welcoming We found our table very quickly ordered through the app and mugs came quickly for us to sort out drinks the breakfast arrived well cooked and presented very reasonable price and filling very clean as were the toilets upstairs all working and no nasty smells It was not busy when we went so we had no problems not sure what it’s like when it’s full

Seated quickly and we ordered using the app saving time queuing drinks arrived very quickly with a smile from girl then with in 5 mins food arrived fish and chips nicely cooked not oily no bones garden peas nice and fresh too love the new app as you choose at your pace and pay at your table

They have altered many of the tables and seats to the high ones. Sorry but at my age I can’t get up there especially when the foot rail is missing. They said the reason is more drinkers. There seemed to be a lot of waste of space. We found a table in a rather dark area with suitable seating. Breakfast was very nice. One coffee machine out of order so a long queue. Staff attitudes much improved since my last visit. Not sure I’ll go again due to seating. They obviously don’t care about older people with stiffer joints. Shame on them.

Haven't been for over a year as when we come last time we had a lukewarm traditional breakfast and vowed we wouldn't come again .But we decided to come to see if anything had changed !!!! Well still the same ,cold breakfast ,cutlery not clean the lady behind the bar had to change the cups before she found clean ones and they were still brown inside. I know you get what you pay for but come on wetherspoons if your chefs cant cooked a hot breakfast there is something wrong ,sort it out before someone gets food poisoning!!!!

We sat at table 3 a few weeks ago when water came through the ceiling on to our table, we had nearly finished our meal, the area was then sealed off, we decided to leave and didn’t wait for desert.Today we visited and sat 3 table again. I went and placed our ordered, on my way back to the table I tripped on the steps, spilling most of my wine over me and the floor, I asked if the wine could be replaced, I was told this was not your policy, I would have to pay for it, I don’t think this is good customer relations, I don’t make a habit of spilling wine over myself.Our meal came which had to go back, because the chips were cold, the picture you had advertised for the pulled chicken was not the same as we were served.

Very nice place would go back nice jacket potato I had here would go back again very delicious. 🥰🥰🥰

Brought my mum here for lunch in the week. Really great value for money! We both had a small brunch and hot drink each and a cold drink for £13! Our food arrived quickly and was hot and tasty. Definitely recommend!

Great service,only popped in for a couple with some friends but ended up staying most of the night. Many thanks to all staff for a great experience, especially Rebecca who was an absolute diamond in putting up with us!

I know a lot of people have a pessimistic view of the Wetherspoons brand but I've visited this pub twice now on a Sunday lunchtime and the pub has been very busy but we've managed to find a table and ordered our meals and drinks on the phone app. On both occasions within seconds of me placing our order and putting my phone back on the table the drinks have arrived and shortly after the food which has always been served very hot. The price for 3 meals and drinks cost less than I would pay for myself in any other London pub. Brilliant! Thank you.

Just for a drink waiting for transport. Was carrying 3 bags of shopping was .et by Sophia alovely young lady. Put my shopping safy awatand saw I was served. Superb...

I go to Wetherspoons quite often normally for a drink but sometimes I get food, food is okay and I do get the odd lovely meal. Nice place to sit and have a drink but they need to sort some air conditioning out it’s always hot! Other than that I recommend

Eat and drink here regularly staff are friendly and food cheap but tasty ! Always use the app to order rather than going to bar which I find a little busy. Love the steak night in particular

A lovely place to have food and drink as a lovely big garden where you can chill in the sun. Does get very popular but has plenty of seating. Food is reasonable priced so he's drink. Toilets are clean and the staff are friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend this pub as a place to go went in the area.

Nice food, always comes out quickly hardest part is always getting a table. Some of the staff can be quite rude and not very attentive cleaning and clearing tables. Nice decor. Unable to reserve a table for a meal

You can’t really beat a Wetherspoons when it comes to value for money. What you see is what you get; that does include large portions! The Star is no exception. The app table service has always been great, and the staff are very helpful. It’s a shame there’s not one like this closer to where I live! I also do like how the calories for each meal are displayed on the menu, as it really does help with selecting what I want to eat!

Great value for money but hard to find seats . A nicely laid out pub and nice staff. Would go back but be prepared to wait for seats

Definitely not this pub’s motto. Come on, exercise those muscles and make a customer feel welcome. As an ex publican this lass would not be working for me. Glad I had black coffee as she would have turned the milk sour. Really not welcoming. Probably wasting my time writing this as the staff don’t take heed.

In reply to the previous review concerning the woman that collapsed, I was there at the time, the staff were very quick to respond and very attentive to the woman’s needs, they were very professional and in no way did they neglect in their duty of care, I am amazed that the previous reviewer has left a negative comment regarding this situation & can only assume this is down to her not receiving a free meal, every time I visit The Star the food is fantastic as is the friendly service ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Had a reunion here with a couple of friends. We only had drinks not food but had a marvellous evening. I tried out the Wetgerspoons App and it worked just fine. Only gripe was that we had a job finding a free table as it was so busy...and that was on a Thursday night too!

Last week I dined with a friend for brunch. Food was very average. Then an elderly lady collapsed at a nearby table. Myself and two other patrons came to her assistance whilst waiting for the emergency services. The staff did nothing. The management was nowhere to be seen. I attended to this lady for 20 minutes giving her reassurance until medics arrived. Once she was safely taken away in an ambulance I returned to my friend and a cold meal. Not one member of staff spoke to me, let alone offered a replacement meal. Get your staff trained in emergency situations and don't rely on your patrons.

We called in after a long day site seeing and managed to get a table for two, the food was very well cooked and presented.The staff were very polite and friendly and the prices very good value for money.

Had breakfast here Sunday, took a while to get served, was twocbehind the bar but one disappeared for sometime causing a backlog. Once ordered seating was comfy although very busy in here. Food came promptly and was tasty, had the traditional, was nice and would visit again.

Popped in for a quick lunch. Friday fish and chip special great value with an alcoholic drink option for £8.35. We were in and out in 45 minutes so ideal for a working day lunch. Order at the bar then it's brought to your table.

We visit regularly both for evening and lunch time food. Service is good and large choice from menu speciality nights for curry etc. Always busy as it gives people what they want value for money!

Ordered 2 burger and chips, on arrival chips were cold and the burger not much warmer either. Very poor and the service not much better. Cheap but crap!

Eat here regularly, although does struggle with menu in hot weather and doesn't always provide the full menu choices. Very busy during summer and weekends so be prepared to wait for a table during these times but otherwise a good place to go with friends or family. Great value for food and drink and staff are friendly

Regular visitor for breakfast. Nothing is too much trouble. The service is very good. Would like to give a mention to Liam, who is a credit to Wetherspoons - his customer service is second to none. The only negative - they should give the bar a good clean as it's always sticky. Not excuse really as it's granit...

I have been to this Wetherspoons on a number of occasions, it is always busy because it is good value for money. It is very good value and always popular, sometimes there is quite a queue at the bar and not enough staff on. This is a budget venue but the food here is always very good.

Rude staff, kicking out a group of people out for one forgetting ID at 1pm on Monday afternoon after trying to buy FOOD.

Eat here regularly with friends and it’s always good food. We never have to wait long. Only problem is sometimes there are no tables left as it’s packed out. Shows it’s popular!

The Star in Hoddesdon is a great pub, the drinks are cheap, the service great. the interior is a nice mix of old and new and there is a great beer garden. I'm not sure what more you could ask of a pub? The only downside is that the pub goes get busy at peak times and it's not near to a train station.

Gammon was over cooked in places. Steak was over cooked. Jacket potato was pretty bad, dry and obviously been cooked for some time. Salad was tiny. Table was clearly dirty and not cleaned for us. Staff was friendly and attentive.

Always has great beers from around the world along with good service. Only down side is that it can get a bit busy at time and so can sometimes take a while to get served.

We went for a take away, the staff were very friendly and helpful, we had a great feast of a take away thank you.

Visited many times nice atmosphere and plenty of outdoor seating , good food, good prices with drinks included for most meals , we have had a few not so good meals but if not happy tell them and they will change it.

The staff are lovely, under pressure most of the time but smile at them and they will smile back. I will return continuously, it’s great for adults and families.

I popped in for lunch last week, and had a great Steak and Chips meal and several Stella Artois drinks. I used the App to order everything from my table. This is the best idea ever.

We visited on a curry night and I must say the food was much better than I expected. The place was really busy but we still got our food pretty quick. The portions were big and the staff were extremely polite and helpful. 3 adults and 3 children with drinks came to under £50 so I would definitely visit again.

Do the staff actually want to work here? No please, no thankyou. No smiles. What a lovely way to entice a return visit. Plenty of staff but all seemed to want to hang around the door of the kitchen and talk. Tables were dirty and full of left over plates. At one point 10 people waiting to get served at the bar and this was at half 4 in the afternoon. On a Monday. The only good thing about this visit was the beer was cheap. Wetherspoons sort this place out.

The staff are incredibly rude! After asking 3 times to have our table cleared from the previous visitor it still took around half hour to be completed with nothing but miserable faces along the way! Is that not the first thing you learn about customer service? To smile?! The beer tastes like the lines haven't been cleaned in around 6 months. The food was dry, all round a terrible visit!! Safe to say we'd never come here again I wouldn't recommend anyone else visiting either!!

They claimed the computer had lost my order after waiting over 40 minutes. When my order finally arrives, I half swallowed about 10 inches of plastic from the microwaved packet it was cooked in.

Lovely pub.. really busy can be hard to get a table. Lovely olde worlde..cheap drinks .. lovely meals..real fires... not you're usual Wetherspoons. Worth a visit. £14 for a bottle of red wine and a pink gin and tonic. Perfect.

Normally good value .Breakfasts good one price.Went there one evening my partner had a burger and chips the burger was swimming in grease and so was top of the bun.

Staff are very rude . Bigger lady behind the counter served me looks like she was just waiting to go home . No interaction or smile as I ordered. Women served the food just dumped the plates on the table . Seems like they would hire any one in here .

Went in early friday evening found a table only 2 chairs rest had been taken . The table very sticky and not cleared had to do it ourself. Went up to order fish and chips as it was fish and chips day told sorry no fish this was not the first time it’s happened also had a sign up in bar no lce going down hill !!

A lovely Wetherspoons! A chilled atmosphere with plenty of seating. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. Will be coming back in the near future!!

Out with my girls for pre Xmas drinks.

Had a meal this week on Saturday. Food delivered by very grumpy waitress. Cutlery was filthy. Complained so new clean cutlery provided by apologetic management. Burger dry and tasteless, also half the size it used to be. Standards slipping alarming rate. Avoid early afternoon and evening as overrun by children. Tables dirty left with appalling mess from kids, and couldn't care less parents.

Ok staff Good food not the best restaurant in town. Recommend going but there are much nicer pubs around ..

Went to The Swan to see a band so it was very busy. Staff are on the ball and do their best. The two main things that let it down are the state of the toilets even at the beginning of the night, in the men’s, you’re literally swimming in urine. And people want to dance, I danced, but some people are incredibly rude and pushy and don’t respect one another. The men were the worse, complete lack of respect. That’s not a fault with the actual pub, just the people in it!

Visited here a couple of times since moving into the area and found it to be a good value place to eat and drink. Staff friendly and helpful. Don't wait to long to be served. Place was always busy when we called in so is obviously popular in the area. Will definitely visit again.

The Wetherspoons Is lovely apart from the people that frequent it, as their local maybe. But twice I sat in the patio to enjoy the sun and twice I had the misfortune to be near some people using foul language. I left the area to get away from it But inside was not much better as another two men were swearing also. Obviously Wetherspoons can't stop who comes in and what kind of people they are, but I did mention it to the manageress who said she would go and ask the men to keep the language out of the public area.

Food is amazing for the price! I had a steak which was cooked by perfection, I asked who cooked it and I recommend a young girl called Lauren for steaks! Best steak I've eaten! The atmosphere is great and the staff are very friendly! Definitely returning

Dear me, a smile would go a long way. Wetherspoons do train your staff. It's so rude to serve me, not look at me, not thank me, to talk to another member of staff all the time even when handing me my change. The coffee machine ran out of coffee and sour puss was nicely informed by myself and another lady. Did she do anything about it? No, she totally ignored us. The queue for coffee was getting longer. I finally asked another member of staff to do something and she did instantly. Sour puss walked by and ignored the situation. Dirty plates sat on our table for about 3/4 of an hour yet they walked past the table empty handed. They really do need to get their act together.

Visited The Star , Hoddesdon on Fri 27th Oct. With a friend, we both had Fish and Chips. Found the staff to be on the ball and friendly, liked the atmosphere, the food was very good at reasonable prices, the place was quite busy. Will be going back asap.

Got with couple of friends for a quick drink after work. About 22:30 and we knew the pub closes midnight. I ask someone to serve me at the till, found a young girl with bigger attitude than her, dark hair and short. i asked twice to be served didnt answer. Completely ignored during the whole order absolutely none of the "magic" words, please or thank you. Thats how someone can instead of making your night better is just ruining it. Her name Becky as they said. Is a nice pub shame having staff issues. Training needed please! customer service basic rules!

You know that food and drink are going to be reasonably priced in a Wetherspoons. Some venues are a little tired and impersonal. This one is not. It never disappoints and the toilets and Tudor screen have the wow factor.

We arrived two couples at 11.45am We asked for four lunches it wasn't a problem they were still serving breakfast the staff we friendly and helpful the food turned up hot and extremely edible

I went out for my 18th birthday meal here yesterday, and had BBQ ribs with chips and onion rings. It was by far the best rib meal I've had around the area for quite a long time, as well as the cheapest! I also ordered the Very Cherry cocktail, (was very smug about showing the bartender my ID ;) ) which certainly lived up to it's name!

Met friends for coffee. I had the never ending coffee but sadly it didn't live up to its name. Went back for a refill and only got half a cup and it ran dry. No staff to be seen.

Went Monday 11th September 2017 as a party four and really enjoyed our meal and drinks for the money we paid. It is a Whetherspoons so you know you will get good value food and drinks.

Went for lunch today Monday, and the pub was packed with customers waiting to be served. Only one barmaid behind the bar with what looked like a Black eye, and she was not happy at all , probably because she was overwhelmed by the huge amount of people waiting to be served. We stood waiting in a queue for 20 minutes before eventually another barmaid came along and served us...

There are 3 Stella pubs in walking distance for me, but for excellent, friendly, expedient and value service, this pub cannot be beaten !!

A Saturday night diversion with neighbour's for value for money food and refreshments. Beers, Prossecco and a bottle of wine. Oh yes and four Chilli con Carne at a very affordable price and the pub has good atmosphere as well.

Went for an evening meal at 5.30 and the only table available was in the smoking area outside. Of the meal itself, it was typical pub fare but of disappointing quality. We ordered the only pasta dish, which wasn't cooked enough. The Caesar salad wasn't available because they didn't have any Caesar dressing (at 5.30?!) so we had to choose another salad we didn't really want. As a pub it looks popular. Just don't bother with the food.

Cheap prices as exceed, pub looks good with an array of seating, fruit machines and glass.

Very nice pub, beautifully restored. The food is cheap and cheerful, you get what you pay for but I must have been to this pub over 10 times now and the food has always been hot and tasty. I had the State Hotdog the other day and it was lovely. The clearing up staff could be a bit more observant and clear the tables (we had our empty plates in front of us for over an hour the other night) and the clientele can be a little rough around the edges but its a nice cheap place to go with girlfriends for a catch up.

Went in there today around 1.45, and found it difficult to find a table for the 4 of us. Managed to find a small one, which still had dirty glasses and crockery on it, and no sign of anyone coming to clear it. table was dirty and stick too. I eventually went looking for some menus which there were none of on the table, and when I returned the dirty stuff was gone, but table had not been wiped down. Decided what we wanted to order, and went to bar to place the order. 2 of us wanted the Brunch, and 2 wanted the Ham, Eggs and chips. We were then told that there were no eggs available. Thinking that they had run out, we asked why, and the bar girl went to enquire, and came back and told us that the cooking equipment that does the eggs had broken down. Now I don't know what specialist equipment you need to fry an egg, but in this day and age, a large chain restaurant, should be able to come up with a better answer than that. Last time my wife and I went there, I wanted to order the Gammon and was told they had run out. Decided to have fish and chips instead and they had none of that either. Today, we just could not be bothered to choose something else,and instead went to the small Cafe across the road, where we enjoyed a really good meal, at a table that had been cleaned down. Needless to say, we will not be returning to this Wetherspoons any time soon. it is the worst one we have ever encountered.

Please put ashtrays outside, to stop smokers, including the security staff, using the floor!

Had all day breakfast here today, wanted to sit outside jn the sunshine, but all the covered tables were so grubby on table tops, thought j couldn't eat food off of them, so went inside. Food was not of the standard I am used to, (I often have their breakfast) then to my horror after I had finished I saw a chef walk past me back into the kitchen, he was so dirty ! No other words for it, j don't think his chef clothes could have ever been washed, he also had on work boots, that were equally dirty. The rest of the pub was grubby too, dont think the cleaners had been in for a while. Don't think I will go back

Came here for breakfast on Thursday and we had a varied selection from the menu,4 of us had the fried breakfast which was nice and also off the menu one had salmon bagle with a fruit salad and someone else had the pancakes,very reasonable prices and everyone enjoyed what they had,also the pub was very nice, an old pub with a modern decor ,but when you use the toilets when you look up you can see all the old beams,which reminds you it's an old building.

I am absolutely appalled with this service I just experienced, staff are rude, have to pay for BBQ sauce, didn't stick to rules and regulations of the Gov, told someone to "watch your lip" just not a happy customer and poor customer service.

This is a beautifully renovated pub which is now a Wetherspoons. The food is ok, just what you would expect. Always served quite quickly. Good service.

Nothing out off the ordinary. Typical Weatherspoons - except for the building. Great OLD building. They did a great job converting it over to the modern pub. Meal is standard. We go to Wetherspoon when we are looking for typical nothing great or fancy food and they do the typical here. BUT - go to see the building. It is worth the trip
