The Stapylton Arms in Ryedale

Having been to the Stapleton Arms at Wass on many occasions and even been shown the bedrooms, 4 of us booked B&B and evening meals. I booked online 2 rooms. The 'Superior' room £150 per night and the other £100. However, we were not aware the venue had changed hands but it almost immediately became apparent. The stairs leading to the bedrooms looked very tierd and unhoovered. The landing and our bedroom stank of burnt fat and the rooms were very basic and on opening the wardrobe I found empty drink bottles. The door to the shower had black rising up it and the shower just ran like a tap.. Our meal was fine and our friends ordered a bottle of champagne which cost £70 which we were happy to pay but when the bill for the meal arrived it was altogether £340. They had even charged extra for a blob of icecream on my pudding as they said icecream was an extra. Next morning we met at breakfast only to discover that our friend staying in the 'Superior' room, one of whom is very seriously ill and this was supposed to be a treat during a break from treatment, found the shower was not working and they couldn't find a shaving ;point. Just to add insult to injury one of our party ordered a poached egg and when it arrived the toast was burnt black on the underside and my bacon was floating in fat. Had it not been for the fact that one of our party was very ill and we didn't want to make a fuss we paid up the bill and left. Not once did the manager ask us if everything was o.k. He was totally uninterested. What a nightmare stay. Never again, The next morning I phoned to speak to the owner but she was not at work but would ring me on the Thursday of that week. She never rang. I rang back a week later and was told the owner had been given my complaint and she would ring me but another weerk later I have received no response. I suppose she is £600 better off and we will never grace their doors again.

We made a return to this pub on the recommendation of James Martin's best Scampi in the UK comment. My wife had the Scampi I had Pie, chips and gravy. All the courses were very well cooked and we had an enjoyable lunch. The Scampi was up there with the best.

Superb pub in Wass near Byland Abbey. Well worth a visit. I had an excellent baguette filled with prawns in Marie Rose sauce which came with delicious crisps, salad and coleslaw (along with chips and soup as extras which I shared with my husband!). Finished off with a lovely affogato. Beer excellent too - both Theakstons Best and Helmsley Gold slipped down a treat. The landlord, James, despite being short staffed due to holidays, was a fantastic host too.

Walked from Sutton Bank on a busy Friday lunchtime (6th Sept). The lovely dark haired man with the glasses was very short staffed but still provided excellent service with a really nice manner and humour. The food was absolutely lovely (blue cheese and walnut salad mmmm and hubby had smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwich) We will be coming back again soon.

We where visiting the area and booked 1 nights B&B. What a find - room was spacious and very clean. Comfy bed and nice to have the toiletries and tea/coffee facilities. We had our evening meal in the restaurant - staff where pleasant and friendly, food was very good. Hubby had the sirloin steak - best he's tasted in a long time. I had the chicken - it was delicious. Enjoyed a nightcap sat outside as the evening was warm. Breakfast - plenty of choices and again the lady serving was lovely and welcoming. Would definitely stay again when we are in the area.

I had a delightful experience at the Stapylton Arms with my parents, we all inevitably destroyed our plates and scored the food very highly! I wasn't sure what to expect after the beloved, family-cherished eatery had been taken over by another business, but my expectations were exceeded by miles! Food was heavenly, diverse and ideal for all ages - there is such a variety on the menu and everything is cooked and served to perfection. Highly recommend the roast beef meal - the gravy is lovely and the beef is so flavourful. There is such a good balance of meat and veg as well - very good amount of food. Drinks are also high quality, the atmosphere is lovely, comforting and quaint, service is good, and the servers are lovely and responsive. What a gem!

We decided to visit on a Thursday evening, the staff were very pleasant & attentive, choice of food very good, excellent quality & good portions. Good choice of local ales. Homely decor and surroundings. We shall be returning soon.

We’d definitely stay here again as everything was perfect. The welcome was warm and helpful, the room was small but the space was well used and had a very comfortable bed. Really lovely, welcoming experience. Popped in for lunch after a visit to the fabulous Byland Abbey. Received a warm welcome from the front of house staff and enjoyed a hearty, relaxing lunch as a family of four. The cheese soufflé was a particular treat for me as it’s always my favourite go to on a menu. Excited to see what the new owners continue to do with the place. Will be back

Had some fantastic twice baked cheese soufflés here in the past (mum and I always chose them if on the menu anywhere )but last night my mum and I had them and they were really not very nice , my cheese sauce was milky with floating bit of cheese didn’t really taste of cheese and didn’t seem to be baked, and both myself and my mum had tummy ache all night and my mum is still it feeling good. Two other family members did enjoy their meals though so possibly just one off . Mum didn’t enjoy her cheesecake either though as it was more of a mousse rather than cheesecake. Bit of a disappointment.

We had a very pleasant lunch at a reasonable price. The atmosphere and service were excellent. The new owners have stepped up to the plate with minimal changes, providing a first rate experience.

Visited for dinner while staying in Helmsley. We booked two days ahead, they are very busy and after visiting we can understand why! The pub is set in a very pretty village and the staff are so welcoming and friendly, service was faultless. The food was hearty and delicious, but unless you have a gargantuan appetite you probably won't even see the dessert menu if you go starter and main (the souflee, crab tart and fillet of beef special were all outstanding) We are now looking to come back for a stay; the recent refurbishment and high standard of hospitality make this a tempting prospect. We were just driving by around 6:00pm one Saturday and popped in to see if there was a table free, feeling confident we could be squeezed in. But despite their best efforts we were out of luck!! A very popular place obviously however despite that, the menu looked good and we got a good impression of a nice vibe making us determined to make a booking to come back 🙂

I came for a meal with my mum & brother after having recommendations from some of our neighbours. The menu had a good choice of dishes plus there are specials listed separately. My brother & I ordered the chicken - me with dauphinoise & him with chips & my mum ordered the salmon with dauphinoise. It was all absolutely delicious. You also get a portion of veg between you which is very generous. The staff were really friendly & attentive & it was a lovely atmosphere. You get the little extra touches like warm bread & water on the table to start. It's the nicest meal I've had out for a good while & we'll definitely be back to try some different options from the menu (sadly none of us had room for dessert this time). A real gem of a place & highly recommended!

Went for lunch yesterday and first class experience. Staff are exemplary, efficient, friendly and professional service. Spotlessly clean and well maintained pub and the food just spot on. As well as really good starters, we both had their famous scampi mains. If there is better scampi anywhere I would like to know! None of your frozen breadcrumbed stuff here just the real McCoy! Have previously had other mains which are just as good. Theakston’s draught Best Bitter really good too and at a very fair price too, unlike so many other gastro pubs. A real gem on all counts.

Called in at 7.30pm last night, Sat evening, didn't have a booking so we thought we didn't have a prayer of a table, Peak time for restaurants. Well, what a refreshing experience, the Gentleman behind the bar not only put himself out to accommodate us, even though they were busy with a 60th party, a friendlier welcome we could not ask for. The food was fabulous, I started with a twice baked soufflé which was delicious, my Wife had a very large portion of battered King prawns, mains of pork loin, and curried tiger prawns were plentiful, and well executed. The meal with drinks was £72, in this day and age, great value. So, thanks once again for your fabulous friendly welcome, and super meal, we will definitely be back!

After walking for over an hour from Studford lodges we arrived at the pub to be greeted with the warmest of welcomes from the landlady. We had left it late for lunch but they opened the kitchen for us and the food and service was excellent. We were extremely tired and didn’t want to walk back, and the lady lady helped us get transport. Genuinely lovely people and food.

Stayed the night and had an evening meal. Arrived at around 2pm, thinking we could get a drink in the bar, but it was full. Luckily the room was ready, so we checked in, there is a residents lounge, however, it was too cold to sit in. The room was quite nice, however, although we had booked for 3 of us, there was only glasses for 2 people and toiletries for 2, which didn’t matter as we had taken our own, it is just a lack of detail. Went down for a pre booked meal at 19:30, asked did we want to go through to table, so we did, we then waited until nearly 20:00 before we managed to ask anyone to take an order. I appreciate that they were busy, but if they explained that they were clearing all the early tables to make way for what appeared to be the next sitting, it would have been fine and we could have sat in the bar and looked at the menu, rather than feeling like we were being ignored. The starters were beautiful, some of the best we have had, the blue cheese salad they did for me without dressing as I can’t have dressing . The lamb was nice for the main course, however, the legendary scampi was a real let down, it was greasy and soggy, the scampi tails didn’t look like they had been cleaned either. We were told scampi came with chips, so there was no alternative, so not liking chips is a disadvantage… and the salad had dressing on it. Overall ~ I’ve given a 4 star purely on the starters and one main being good.

Visited this lovely country inn located at Wass,with my wife ,sister and Matt her partner.From the outset couldnt fail to be impressed, the staff are very friendly and accomodating ,the room was very comfortable, We had a lovely dinner, I started with a nice prawn cocktail followed with roast duck and veg and finished off with a huge knickerbocker glory. We all enjoyed the meal very much. After a peaceful night's sleep,enjoyed a full English cooked with care to perfection nice to have hot plates. This establishment is quality run by fantastic staff and a good chef . Well done 5 stars

Great accommodation, food was fantastic, really friendly, and a great little place to stay, would definitely stay here again.

Have eaten here a few times and the food has always been excellent until last night. We had booked for the Christmas menu but were left disappointed. When having turkey and all the trimmings, you expect a nice lot of vegetables but we were given a choice of 2, broccoli and red cabbage, there was not a carrot, parsnip or sprout in sight. One of our party said the plate of food looked drab. They are obviously cutting costs but have gone too far and are now at risk of losing customers.

We all enjoyed our lunch out. The food was excellent and the staff were very friendly.

Lunch for 5 adults and a small child (a highchair was provided) in this warm and friendly establishment was just perfect. The meals were spot on, hot, timely served and of good quality. We where well attended at the table but never rushed or pressured. The menu covered all our requirements and the whole experience was a pleasure. 5* in my book.

Very helpful and friendly hosts who put them selves out to provide us with tasty food while accomodating a gluten free diet.

One of the best meals we had whilst holidaying in North Yorkshire . We were looked after by a nice welcoming gentlemen behind the bar , they have a good selection of ales , spirits and wine , the main course was excellent accompanied by fresh superbly cooked vegetables and a delicious dauphinois potatoes . We couldn’t resist the rhubarb Elton mess for dessert . Wow , probably the best we’ve had , homemade meringue and proper rhubarb . 10/10 guys

Our first time to this venue in many, many years so didn't know what to expect. One vegetarian in our group and our usual experience is that it's never a great choice at these places. The Stapylton Arms was such an exception to what we expected, possibly the best dining out event we've ever experienced! A superb menu, just simply lots of choice, even for slightly picky eaters (!). The service was friendly, warm and genuine and the prices were just as expected for such a nice, country venue. Not the cheapest but in no way unnecessarily or unexpectedly expensive. The food arrived without great delays and was quite frankly superb in every single respect, taste, quantity & quality. An equally great choice of desserts completed the evening. A clean, obviously well managed, well laid out venue, super service, our new favourite place! Recommend to anyone.
