Unfortunately, I agree with the people who were shocked at the cost of the food. We ordered food that was priced at £4.85 if you eat in, then were told that they could add a salad on to it for us as a meal deal, the salad was priced at under £3, we had 2 coffees,£3.60 each yet were charged almost £19! When we queried this, we were told it was because we were eating inside? We'd already paid a premium for this so it really didn't make sense. I definitely wouldn't go back. I left feeling we'd been deliberately ripped off.

Visiting Malton today, on a soggy October afternoon, wanted lunch and happily went into The purple carrot. Delicious dinner and coffee, served by happy polite staff. So glad we did, as really don't want to eat chips or pizza, and this offers a delicious alternative, plus utterly gorgeous apple strudel!

A lovely little cafe in the heart of Malton. We visited based on reviews and when we entered and saw the food on display we definitely wanted to stay. The staff are super friendly and the food did not disappoint. It was full of flavour and taste, the textures all complemented each other and the portion size was perfect. Would highly recommend and will definitely be returning for more off the menu!

How can so much deliciousness be packed into such a tiny space? I was visiting Malton just for a few hours and looking for somewhere a bit different to have lunch. I spotted the Purple Carrot just as I was heading away from the market place. Inside the tiny space was a counter full of all manner of delicious cakes etc with a blackboard just above counter with various meal options. I ordered Chaat from the blackboard then made my way up some fairly steep stairs to the seating area . I was very lucky to get as seat as there were probably no more than 25 seats in total. My food was delicious and a very generous portion too! No time for a dessert of any kind but there were several which I could happily have chosen. Definitely somewhere that I would visit again. Recommended!

Lovely staff and great quirky décor. The food looked delicious, a bit pricey but I'm always happy to pay for quality. Unfortunately it was at the very best - average. The squash, beetroot and cheddar quiche was surprisingly tasteless, as was the raw chop. The cherry and dark chocolate cake was bewildering. It looked lovely, was dry when I dug in and then oddly sticky and not palatable. Seeking out vegetarian eateries is something my friend and I like to do, to revisit and then recommend to friends, but I'm afraid I will not be recommending the Purple Carrot.

The food is really nice. The cafe upstairs is pleasant but very small. We were the only couple eating in early afternoon yesterday. We each had a small mixed veg tart which came with a salad, and a pot of tea each. I paid with a card but didn’t notice until today that the price was £29.40! I assumed this was a mistake as the tarts were approximately (I can’t recall the exact prices) £4.50 each and the salads about £2.50 or so. I phoned this morning to say I thought I’d been overcharged. The lady I spoke to said the tarts and salad were £11.50 each and “my colleague would have told you that”. First, if I had been told that was the price I’d have queried it as it bore no relation to the marked prices of the items. Second, why would her colleague have told me the price when it was marked on the items? Third, from the response I get the strong impression this is not the first time this has happened. Which impression is confirmed by reading the reviews. We won’t be coming back.

Amazing little lunch place! We loved our lunch here today and can’t wait to go back again soon and try out other things on the menu too. Definitely one of those places where whatever you order you know it’s going to be great and full of flavour! Will probably be more of a takeaway place for us since there isn’t loads of seating but we’ll definitely be back soon for picnics and food that makes you feel good as well as tasting good. The service was spot on too and everything was very clean and organised which added to the experience. It’s not the cheapest lunch spot but well worth it in my opinion and worth paying that little extra for!

Mixed experience - lovely cafe with nice vegan/vegetarian options but seems needlessly overpriced to dine in + overcharged us. if you wish to dine in, you need to order a Meal/lunch plate. Meaning any fridge item (even worth £2.5) will need to be paired with salad etc and will cost meal/ lunch plate prices (I.e., £8.5 with 1 small serving of side salad/ £10.5 with 2). Please read full review/see photos to know how it doesn’t make sense. Staff is friendly. Food tastes average, Indian spices. Tap water has no extra charges. However, Portions are generally small. Felt overpriced. Eg. Meal price for a samosa we ordered (which is £2.5 pounds on its own) was £8.5 with just addition of 1 side salad portion. Why? I also feel we were overcharged, we ordered 3 fridge item, 2 were served with 1 side salad and one on its own and still paid around £25, not sure why we paid 3 lunch plate prices when weren’t served with? Otherwise ambiance is lovely, great for photos.

We got a table for what I think was the cafe's first evening event: a thali feast! It was absolutely DELICIOUS, and everything home made, vegetarian and alcohol free. It's a set menu, and on the night we went we had fried okra to start, followed by the thali 'proper' (lots of little bowls of loveliness) and a bruleed Indian rice pudding which I forgot to take a photo of because I was too busy eating it. Service was sweet and friendly, and all in a lovely relaxed and homey atmosphere. We'll definitely be going again.

Coffee good cake terrible, 3 people tried this cake and agreed it was not good, it had a musty taste. Staff insisted it always taisted like this, which they seemed to think was a good thing? No 'sorry you find it unpalatable' or offer of substitute. Badly handled. I was left feeling upset. I live in Scarborough so made the journey to visit today as quite honestly I’m missing this gorgeous little delight of a place. My two whippet Meadow & Orchard accompanied me. Purple Carrot is such an inviting and quirky/earthy & beautiful cafe/shop. The food is absolutely delicious, so colourful healthy and tempting. The owners are friendly and so hard working they really do deserve to reap the rewards of such culinary skills. On sale are lovely pretty treats for the home/kitchen. I bought some dried flowers today & another time I purchased a painting which sits above my dressing table. I cannot recommend this place enough, a jewel, the heart of Malton town. Thank you so much

Lovely little café with some (limited) seating upstairs. I had an an apple strudel and cappuccino, although a little on the pricey side, it does show that you really do get what you pay for! Yes there aren’t many tables but when we were the first to sit down, so pick your time if you definitely want to eat in. It is small so better for 2 people rather than a party of 6. Big parties can still enjoy the food taken away. Good value and lovely to have a good selection of vegan food, which meat eaters will also enjoy and the cakes - you won’t even realise they are plant based.

Liked the look of the place so went in. Once I had been upstairs to seating then realised that you had to order at the counter I was in tune. No menu as such, just little name boards dotted around, so I let my eyes do the choosing. A nutty, falafel sort of along with a potato type salad, carrot salad and leaf salad, all with dressings was fabulous. My latte to go with it arrived in a handle less ‘pot’ which was useless until the coffee had cooled. I looked enviously at the women opposite who had two cup handles to my none. All in all I can forgive the coffee cup because the food was fabulous!

We were there every night of our week’s stay in Burythorpe - in fact James, behind the bar, practically had my pint ready for me as I walked in the door after the 2nd evening. The owners and staff were all very friendly, and the food delicious - we ate in the pub four times, with food ranging from burgers, vegetable tarts, pizzas and excellent fish and chips, we were more than satisfied each time. For such a welcoming, cosy village-feel pub with a great warm atmosphere, my only hope is it gets busier over time - perhaps because Burythorpe is a small village, at times we were the only customers in, but it deserves a lot more custom. We’re absolutely hoping to be able to go back at some point.

We spent a very rainy morning of our holiday here with our 21 month old, the staff are really friendly and helpful and there is a fabulous relaxed atmosphere. Our little absolutely loved the soft play and happily spent at least a couple of hours climbing, sliding and running and she would probably have stayed longer! We had a pleasant lunch of baked potatoes and warm baguettes. We would definitely visit again if we were in the area! Our only very slight suggestion would be to get some new batteries for some of the role play toys . Overall a really enjoyable experience, well done guys you really are doing a wonderful job! I wish there was something like this local to us!!
