Captain Barney's Cafe in Ryedale

We spent a very rainy morning of our holiday here with our 21 month old, the staff are really friendly and helpful and there is a fabulous relaxed atmosphere. Our little absolutely loved the soft play and happily spent at least a couple of hours climbing, sliding and running and she would probably have stayed longer! We had a pleasant lunch of baked potatoes and warm baguettes. We would definitely visit again if we were in the area! Our only very slight suggestion would be to get some new batteries for some of the role play toys . Overall a really enjoyable experience, well done guys you really are doing a wonderful job! I wish there was something like this local to us!!

Visited today with son and his family, grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed the soft play and role play areas. Parents and grandparents thoroughly enjoyed them enjoying the play areas, under all our supervision, and all of us enjoyed the variety of freshly cooked food on offer. Very warm welcome on arrival with clear advice on facilities and responsibilities. Thank you to all staff for the lovely service, food, drinks and a relaxing and enjoyable few hours. Recommend pre-booking for the food. We look forward to next time!

It's ok for a morning or afternoon ., for kids to let some steam or energy off. Not much room for tiny 1yrs to play or crawl about in. Could do with extending the place od all ages of kids.

Seriously disappointing. Very shabby and grubby soft play area in serious need of upgrading and attention. Balls everywhere but no specific ball pit. Clearly not kept clean and tidy each day and we were there in the morning so it should have been at its best. It’s also very small so would be awful if there were lots of children trying to play. We didn’t bother with the cafe after experiencing the grubby play area. We will not be returning.

Just called in for some food on our way to Scarborough and the staff were amazing and the food is so fresh and tasty 😋 I will definitely come back here! Xxx

Cheap and fun kids play. Think it was about £3 for my 1 year old. The girls in here are really friendly and there’s plenty to keep kids busy for hours and hours. Just what we were looking for to stop at on our journey home

Absolutely love captain barney's. All the staff are amazing and so welcoming. We've attended many events there and my kids always have an amazing time. Having both indoor and outdoor play areas gives the kids lots of opportunity to play and use their imaginations. Highly recommended!

Group of young children with responsible adults in tow. Party was in cafe and softplay area only through choice. 2 very capable young ladies at counter dealing with hot drink orders for adults and ensuring children left soft play area for cake cutting/finishing time/supporting adults keeping to guidelines. Cake and small buffet provided from bday childs parents. Kids had a great time and lovely time for adults to mingle and share responsibility of checking on offspring playing in soft play area. Clean and tidy, Health and safety all good. Ideal for quality fun with supervision by parents. Ace venue.

Great place for children to play and a get together for mums

Great children's play centre, yes its small but that's why I like it.....it does not boom with noise like the big industrial play barns. I can sit and do a bit of work as my child plays. Good range of food, inc superb home made gluten free and vegan cakes. The place is clean and staff friendly.

Staff very hardworking but not very clean in the climbing frame

This is a small soft play center, big enough to let your little one have some fun! Some improvements have been made over the last year, with the inclusion of a lower level play area. However making the seating area a little more comfortable for the grown ups might make people stay longer Eg: some music or a TV on the wall could make a world of difference to the grown ups too

Very disappointed. I attended here with my son and a friend with her son. It is good location for us as half way between our homes. We used to meet here 5 years ago with our first children and it was always great. Unfortunately the soft play is in need of some real attention, there were rips and gaffer tape in various places. On the spongey stairs there were rips which could really dangerous if a child's leg went down into it could cause serious injury. There was also at least one other child walking around eating inside the soft play dropping food everywhere. There was no supervision from their parents nor did any staff ask them not to do that. We did have lunch while we were here and although there wss a little wait it was okay and is reasonably priced. However we won't be attending here again due to the condition of the play area.

I visited today with 3 children and ordered lunch. I ordered a jacket potato and really wished I’d not bothered. It came 20mins after the childrens lunchboxes arrived and was the smallest jacket I’d ever seen. They’d given me tons of topping to compensate but it it simply shouldn’t have been served. When approaching the staff I was told it in a flippant mannner it was the largest they had and that’s why I was given extra toppings. No sorry. Needless to say I will take me business elsewhere

We had planned a walk in the local countryside but on arrival in Malton we were met by torrential rain, so decided to give it a miss and see what else we could occupy our 15 month old son with instead. We found Captain Barney's online (the website isn't active, but they have a Facebook site) and had a wander down. I went in first to ask about prices etc. and there was only one other family in. The staff member was very friendly and let me have a look at the soft play before we made a decision. We spent nearly two hours there including having lunch and plenty of playtime. It stayed very quiet for the first 45 minutes and then really filled up with families and a booking for a birthday. Walk-ins were being turned away and recommendations giving for booking later in the day. We would highly recommend going early if you've got a little one, as once it fills with older children (4-6 year old) there might not be much space left for toddlers and crawlers. There are two slides and a couple of areas to explore in the netted area and in the cafe itself there is an area with toys to play with and a mirror wall - children of all ages (up to 6ish) seemed to be well entertained. There was a good selection of food choices on the adult's and children's menu and at a really good price. It was tasty - the Barney's Lunch Board (sandwich, cheese cubes, cucumber sticks, and sausage roll) was devoured by our son! This also came with half a cake which the staff were more than happy to swap for a banana for us. Entry to the soft play is an excellent price - we paid £1.75 for our son (prices increase with age), and adults are free (when I expressed surprise at this, they said it was because they hoped adults would buy a drink - I'm yet to find a place in York where this is the case) We visit Malton occasionally with family, and would not hesitate to return for a play and a drink, and would recommend it to others. We overheard people say that they 'live there' so obviously it's a popular destination for local families. All in all an excellent spontaneous morning activity. Note - there is an outside play area advertised but due to the weather we didn't see it, but would look forward to trying it out on a summer visit.

A lovely little place to visit. It is small in comparison to your usual play centre but that makes it perfect for smaller children. I would recommend it for children under 8.

Average play equipment, rubbish food, slow service. The "chocolate milkshake" probably isn't worth more than a pound - no idea why they charge £2.50, we found that really misleading for what actually arrived at the table. The best thing about the place was the other parents to chat to. As outsiders to the area, we're assuming people recommend this place mainly due to lack of alternatives rather than actual quality.

Great little place. Had a coffee & did some work on my laptop while the kids went nuts & burned off lots of energy. Can get crowded but staff doing their best on crowd control. Will definitely be back with them when the kids need a place to run around again.

Very small plah frame in comparison to other soft plays but my child did not seem to mind and enjoyed himself. Friendly staff and great little cafe on site. Very reasonable prices.

Lovely fresh food including salads and homemade coleslaw, a simple and tasty menu perfect when you have the kids with you and they need to burn off some steam while you have a break! Proper barista coffee machine aswell and if your kid kicks off you're amongst friends! The play area is safe and well set out great for the children to play together, customer service is friendly and relaxed.

Nice little place for children.

After coming over to malton and even some times before, i have brought my little boy here to place and for his dinner, such great customer service provided by the workers and my son enjoys going, i do recommend the barney board for kids as its such a great idea, we also went to the halloween party and it was such a great night, with jack sparrow and elsa, filled with games etc and i thank the owner nick and every worker there for making it such a great experience for jayden to enjoy :)

My first visit here lovely little place lovely staff only downside I had is the fact most of the play area is out of sight from play area... I didn't like not knowing n being able to see where she was...

Had my son's 5th birthday party here 13th april for his friends, they had such a great time. They did some lovely food for the kids, the soft play is unbelievable would really highly recommend them for parties and just for a cuppa and a play. Staff are very welcoming, friendly and helpful couldn't do enough for you. Thankyou for such a brilliant time

With no recent review, we were concerned Captain Barney’s had closed but no. I would guess most clients were regulars so few new visitors to write new reviews. We visited on Saturday because it was half way between York (our home) and Scarborough (home for daughter, son-in-law and grandson). It was our first visit but it will not be our last. I endorse all the nice remarks about the café but it is difficult to over praise the soft play area which filled the basement. There were two halves. The children playing in the half our two-year old grandson favoured had a maximum age of about six. Older children seemed to favour what appeared to be more challenging equipment in the other half. The oldest children I saw were early teens but I think they were supervising younger siblings rather than enjoying the equipment for themselves. When we first arrived at 10:30 it was nearly empty but by 13:00 it was packed. The café claims to take bookings and I would advise taking advantage of this at peak times.

Friendly staff and a great place for kids to run about while you enjoy a coffee. My daughter didn't want to leave!

Walking through the door with a pushchair is hard enough but then you've got another door to get through! Lack of space for buggies and considering this is a place for young children it can get quite cluttered. The overall feel of the place is very dull, decoration and furniture. There is a play area downstairs but it's not very big when there's more than 5 kids in there all fighting for the ball pool. A very nice hot chocolate. The plus of this place is the friendly and welcoming staff which adds the much needed warmth.

Stopped after going to the opticians, the food is excellent and great value, fantastic choice for kids and adults. The staff are really friendly and helpful and everything was really clean. The kids aged 9 and 10 had a lovely time. Would definitely recommend and would stop even without kids to eat or drink.

There is no where on your doorstep that caters for kids and adults like Captain Barneys does. Great play for kids (& adults who dare join in), fantastic value for money, tasty food, great facilities and the birthday parties have kids encapsulated, with humour from the owner/host that gets everyone having a great time. Keep it up crew!

Stopped here for a break whilst travelling to our holiday apprentment with our 19month old son. Entry, 2x hot drinks with all the trimmings, 2x adult meals and a ginger bread man still left us with plenty of change from £20. The venue is smaller than expected but that made the visit even more enjoyable (although can see it becoming extremely busy in peak hours). The food was simple but tasty, freshly prepared and large portions offered. The cafe links directly to the play area so children can play freely and also access drinks etc as required. Staff were lovely and couldn't do enough for you. The venue itself was extremely clean and tidy and very welcoming. Thank you for a lovely experience

Great little soft play area. The kids (aged between 6 and 2) spent a good couple of hours playing here. The food was great too. The kids selection plates were fantastic, it meant I could choose only the items I knew which child would eat. Also it includes unlimited juice for the kids. The adult food selection was great with not just sandwiches but fresh pasta too. And a good selection of hot and cold drinks. The staff were very friendly and I would definitely recommend it.

An easy win on a rainy day. Perfect for my 4 year old to let of stream in a clean and safe environment. Nice coffee nice cakes and snacks, and a welcoming atmosphere to boot. The only slight downside is that there is no parking. So you have to pay for it in the council car park which right behind.

So we offered to have the two 2 year old grandchildren whilst their mums went Christmas shopping in York By choosing captain Barney’s we had a marvellous time Free wi fi, reasonable prices for food and drinks. Lots of tables Quiet. Nice children. Excellent staff Toys available Three hours later , including coffees , teas, snacks etc only £15 lighter we reluctantly left A haven. Go there Oh and the kids loved it !

We took our 20 month old daughter he as we are staying near by. Our daughter loved the big ball pool which is great for her age. We also had lunch here and the food was really good and very reasonable priced. Definitely recommend it.

It may not be as gleaming as a place like Creepy Crawlies in York but it is far, far cheaper! 3 pounds in total for a 3 year old and a 11 month old and the toys upstairs and the downstairs soft play kept them happy - particularly the slide into the ball pit. The fresh pasta was actually pretty good (pesto for the adults, tomato and cheese for the kids).

Mi hija tuvo su cumpleaños aquí ayer. Servicio fantástico de principio a fin. Todo lo que necesitaba hacer era subir con un pastel y bolsas de fiesta! Todo el mundo dice lo mucho que disfrutamos y la comida de fiesta era de un alto estándar.

Fiesta de cumpleaños de mi hija celebró recientemente aquí. El personal no podía hacer lo suficiente para que sea una experiencia fácil y agradable en todos los sentidos. Sin duda lo recomiendo. Limpio y agradable con comida sorprendentemente buena y café disponible además de wifi gratuito. Muy buen lugar para 5 años de fiesta de cumpleaños y me hicieron un auténtico esfuerzo con juegos, etc. Recomendado.

Siempre un favorito de los niños en un día húmedo, les encanta Capitán Barney's y jugar con los otros niños en un ambiente seguro. Hacerles quemar algo de energía y de golpe de vapor, mientras que algunos relajamiento con un bonito y un papel artesanal no es lo que parece! :) Días felices! Muy relajante, bien al menos para mí!

Visited this place with the grandchildren for the first time although the children have been before.Staff very welcoming ,the children love it ,lovely cup of tea and cappuccino.

Really enjoyed visits to Captain Barneys.Staff were very friendly and helpful. My grandsons really enjoyed their time spent here and even dragged Nana into the ball pool lol.Good value for money.

I love captain Barneys and have been visiting there for a long time, thought it was about time I left a review. Captain Barneys is my favourite play centre for three reasons. One, upon finding out I couldn't eat anything as I am gluten and dairy free Chris (one of the owners) promptly went to morrisons to buy my favourite peanut butter so I could have peanut butter and jam on toast. Two, it is small enough (and the staff are so good) that you can actually relax while your child plays instead of constantly losing them and you can hear them if they call for you or cry and finally- as mentioned already Chris and Caroline and all of their staff are incredibly friendly and helpful.

Staying in the area on holiday. Absolutely perfect place for the kids to run off energy. The owner Chris took lots of time to talk to us. We had a great lunch which was excellent quality and value. Kids had a ball. The play area was perfect for our 2 & 5 year old.We'll probably revisit before we go home! Can't praise highly enough. All staff were very friendly and made us feel very welcome. Well done folks!

Visited with my tots on a quiet weekday morning. First impressions were that it was a welcoming, clean and reasonably spacious, with loads of seating options and approachable staff. The kids liked the soft play and we adults liked the fact the kids were easy to keep an eye on (from our vantage point outside on the picnic benches). The toilets were nice and clean and the actual soft play equipment looked in great condition from what I saw. The owner introduced himself to us and told us a bit about how Captain Barney's came to fruition. He was obviously passionate and keen to develop a business that was accessible to all and provided excellent quality facilities and food while operating within its means. We didn't have any food (kids had snacked all morning) but the coffee and drinks were good quality and reasonably priced as was admission for our tots. Overall we felt this was a great soft play, probably better than others because of the warm and pleasant nature of the staff and owner, hence 5 stars. We hope to visit again soon.

I cant praise tis place enough, its lovely and clean, great food and lovely staff, they cant help you enough. I have taken my little boy several times and never disappointed. Its not a huge place, but there is enough play space for the children, whilst the grown ups enjoy a cheeky cookie and cup of tea. Would highly recommend.

Wow!!! We had a fantastic party at Captain Barney's for my daughters 4th birthday. The staff have been amazing and very accommodating, always going above and beyond what you could possibly expectThe food was excellent and all the children had great fun, same time next year??!! We visited During the Easter holidays. We welcomed in personally by the staff, who instantly made our whole family welcom.The kids were entertained with a lovely play area and the adults were wellfed with a wide variety and choice of refreshments.If you like the personal touch, then Captain Barneys is the place for you.Highly recommended visit.

We visited here with our 3.5 and 1.5 year olds and was brilliant for both of them lots to keep them happy and entertained. We had a warm welcome, staff very friendly, attentive and helpful and we opened a 'tab'. Had a cup of tea, kids played, then stopped off for lunch and another brew - not sure how long we were there (a while!) but didn't feel rushed or pushed out. A really decent sized play and cafe area where it's easy to keep an eye on the children.Good choice on the menu for both kids and adults and a lovely, safe environment to spend time in. We'd definitely be regulars if we lived nearer but were only passing through :o(Well done and keep up the good work - wish there were more places like this around!

Soft furnished play area for kids & dining tables for adults.All quite reasonably priced and the food is good value for what you pay.You're not rushed along and can stay for as long as you like, all the staff are friendly & the kids love going here.

Very busy place in school holidays.my grandchildren had a good time.It is a very clean place to eat considering a lot of children about.

I took my two grandson's with my mum, sister,niece and nephew; we come from York. Mum lives in Malton I we get off the train we walk past each week; this was our first visit and won't be our last.We were surprised to discover the lovely couple who run this place also come from York. We forgot it was half term this week; it was extremely popular and busy. The play area was really good and you can watch your children from every point in here a massive plus with toddler's. it was set out really well too so toddlers can be seen easily. The food was well worth the wait; it was beautiful presented and all fresh too; great plastic children's cutlery great advantage and plastic plates you don't get this in many places. It was very clean and they keep tidying up every time a table becomes free, they hoovered each time too. So we will be definitely going back again it was so clean and a great find too.We will be going back again a great find thank you for a great afternoon; you made us feel very welcome even though you were rushed off your feet. great simple food with genuiniely friendly service, recommend it to anyone with little kids. The play area isn't huge but the kids love it and spend a good hour running around every time we visit.

I have been visiting Captain Barneys on a weekly basis for almost two years and I have never been disappointed. The owners are caring and looking after their clients like if they were their friends. The premises are always kept clean. The food is good and rightly priced. And most importantly; My daughter loves playing there for hours.

Great Soft play for younger children with friendly staff. The layout of the works very well so you don't need to worry about your children escaping.

We visited Malton on a wet Saturday, went in for a coffee and ended up staying all morning and having lunch. As we had never been before the gentleman showed us round the whole place to make sure 'it was for us' The staff couldn't have been more friendly or helpful and my little boy had a great time. Would definitely recommend a visit.

We had a party here for our boys who go to the same school and have birthdays within weeks of each other. It was clean. The staff Caroline, Amy and the others were friendly and welcoming and super with the 20 kids that came to the party. The food good, traditional party food plus fruit and veggies. Chris who I spoke/emailed to sort the party out had super communication through out.All the kids had a super time. Thanks everyone at Captain Barneys.

Fantastic place to take the kids, very safe environment, you can sit and have coffee and something to eat knowing that your kids are playing safely. Very friendly staff, very well run, clean and tidy. I've just held a party for my four year old and one year old, which was very professionally run. Everyone had a fab time and the new edition of an outside area is an absolute bonus. We had a bouncy castle which the kids loved. Service was top notch and you are always made to feel like you're one of the family or you've been friends for years. Wish all places were this good.

We visit Captain Barneys in the holiday with our 3 children. Although I think my 9year old has out grown it now as it is a small area for "older" children. My 6 and 4 year old really enjoy there time here. Although the menu is quite limited its enough, i tend to have a sandwich, as it comes with side salad and some crisps so fills a space. It is small but is build for the younger children so my youngest two love to visit. Drinks are lovely and hot as they should be :)

Captain barney's is a great place. The staff are friendly and enjoy what they do. Service is great and they always make you feel welcome. The Layout means you can allow your children to have fun in the soft play area whilst you can enjoy a drink or some food away from the fun mayhem that occurs. The food is good and value for money with enough choice for a lunchtime meal, ranging from cakes to Panninis and baked potatoes. The barneys bag for kids has a good choice too. Overall a great place which means I keep coming back and bringing friends too
