Lovely little boozer with a roof terrace

Had amazing meat pies!! The kid enjoyed the pepperoni pizza. Order your food at the bar. They will bring it to you after... didn't take a photo cause the food was amazing and we destroyed it

Let me ask you this. How in the world does it take a full hour to deliver an order of fish and chips when you are THE ONLY CUSTOMERS IN THE PUB? My order of a chicken and ham pie with mashed potatoes and peas (not very good) was delivered fairly quickly and my wife's order of fish and chips didn't arrive. I waited to start eating for several minutes, thinking the fish would follow shortly. It didn't. Apologies and a refund were offered, but after a 12,000 step day, we decided to wait for the fish rather than go elsewhere. After the long wait, the fish and chips were substandard as well. The decision to eat there was a huge mistake. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.

First the positives, the location is good and Ray the barman and the manager from New Zealand are both very nice and very professional. As for a lot of the other staff; however, it seems as though they have not seen a pub before let alone served in one. As a local to the area, I have seen another manager a few times in the Duke of York in Southwark (not too far away) as it’s probably too expensive to drink in her own pub. A mid range medium Rose is £8.20 and in the Duke of York and other pubs close by the price is around £6.40. £8.20 is not normal price for the area. If you are a tourist in the Hilton next door, go further afield and save your money. Well 50 meters anyway there are cheaper pubs dotted around. In addition, if there is a price on the website it probably wont match the price you are charged at the till. Ask for a receipt as you may be over charged. I got charged over £7.00 for a beer. Slightly cheaper than the American bar at the Savoy. The food is hit and miss, if you get served. Some lovely looking cheesy chips got placed on the table next to mine. We went to the bar and was informed the kitchen was shut. Although, some tourists were ordering fish and chips at the same time and got served shortly after . Very odd. We need more decent pubs in the area. Hope this one improves and/or my bank manager extends a loan so I can afford a glass of wine. From local knowledge there are cheaper and arguably better pubs nearby. Trust me

We were visiting from the States and staying at the Hampton Inn near to the pub. We went there twice; once for drinks our first night in London, and once for dinner our last night in London. Both times were enjoyable with friendly staff and good beer and delicious food.

Staff are pretty universally rude. If you go during one of their open mic nights you're not allowed to speak, and they don't even seem happy for you to order drinks in case you disturb the (usually terrible) acts. 2024 update: I think it's changed management. I have no idea if they still have open mic nights. The staff have gone from 'rude', to 'uninterested'. I guess that's an improvement. They also now seem to have Leicester Sq prices... £7.50 for a pint is unreasonable for their location.

Great spot for authentic British food and pub feeling. Football on the tele, mash with your pie, a pull tap for your hazy IPA ... what more could you ask for? Highly recommend the vegan pie with peas.

A lovely traditional local behind the Old Vic. Served by a lovely, friendly young lady who was clearky new to the job.

If you don’t mind cat food in your pie then this place you will love. I wouldn’t bother having a meal here again

Great little pub. Great atmosphere, great service, great drinks and great food. The meat pies are delicious. I always visit this pub when I’m in London. Be mindful of football night because it does get quite noisy. A great place to pop into and get a drink or a bite to eat.

Glassware looked like their glasswasher is out of order. Ewww. Ewww. Ewww. Not clean. It wasn't just the one glass. Was not inclined to order again.

I went with a friend and had the loveliest server called Dari (defo deserves a promotion!), who not only gave us some gorgeous compliments but also made us feel super welcomed and was so attentive to our drinks and food.

Recommend staying here for a short stay. Central sightseeing location. Stairs a bit steep.

Went here last Tuesday and again beat the lunch time rush! It seems to be very quiet around here at lunchtime early in the week (but don't take that as gospel as I haven't wandered around this area for years). The staff were lovely, two young ladies removing all signs of the Six Nations from the place, happy to have a chat while they were working. The layout is very straight forward with the bar being an island surrounded on one side by tables and the other side with two longer tables against the wall - lots of space everywhere to relax. The Guinness was excellent.

After arriving in London, I had some time to check in at the hotel, so I went for a snack and a beer. The atmosphere is very cute and the staff are friendly.

We were staying at the Hampton Inn which is just 1 block from The Stage Door. We wanted to visit a British Pub, so we went here after a day of walking the City. They had a large beer selection, and the Fish & Chips was pretty good!

The place itself is nice but >£7 a pint is way, way too expensive for this to be a regular haunt considering there are cheaper options nearby.

Visited The Stage Door on a Thurs night, great atmosphere in the bar. Service was fast and friendly staff. Range of beers/cider on tap looked good, few traditional hand pulls as well for ale drinkers. Will be back when next in SE1 area.

50/50 shot on service. The first night we went, the service was great, food amazing, and drinks delicious. I had to revise my post because the second evening we returned to the pub and were not met with the same service. What we were met with was sarcasm and rudeness. So much so, that we didn't stay to eat. We had already ordered one drink, our first of the evening, and then we left. With all of the lovely places to have a nice meal, I'm certainly not going to pay for someone to be rude to me. Also, please learn to pull a tap. The owner is losing massive amounts of money on the waste. Not sure I'd come back with the 50/50 odds at this point. Shame though, the was food rather delicious.

By far the worst pub in London, horrible staff. Much better pubs near by don’t give them a penny.

Very good variety of pies and beers in a quaint English pub setting. We had beef and Stilton pies which were very good. Also have pies with chicken, vegetable and other options. They have a number of beers I haven't seen which are fun to try. Definitely worth a visit.

Had a Mothership Moo (steak & ale) pie. Not a massive fan of pies generally, but was really impressed with these. Really tasty & a perfect portion size. Only grumble was the gravy came in a small dish you'd usually get ketchup in (tiny) rather than a jug. Would go again.

Good range of beers and a reasonable roof terrace to sit on warm evenings. Screens for sport and pool table. Gets crowded with pre theatre goers for Old Vic.

We book The Stage Door before attending our annual family evening at Wimbledon Panto and we love it. The food is very good, the staff are warm and friendly and very professional and we look forward to booking again next year!

Nice back street pub close to Waterloo station. There is a great roof terrace for use in the summer (and winter as it has a covered section and heaters). Always get a friendly welcome. Lots of choices of Gins. I haven't eaten here but they offer Pieminster Pies and other pub food.

Update to last review. Fortunate enough to try the pies this time. No regrets!!! The pies were the absolute business! Amazing. The bar staff were amazing and hard working. Particularly as there was a gents WC issue which they jumped on straight away as soon as i raised it. Recommended. Again! Nice lively pub tucked away in the backstreets near The Old Vic. Apparently has a terrace but didn't check that out. Great atmosphere. Small menu but food was excellent and reasonably priced. Ales and beers well kept. Worth checking out.

Horrendous pies. Basically microwaved behind the bar and served tepid. Doubt the venison special had ever met a deer as didn't taste it. No idea what the hype is about. Best suited for the local students.

The pizza was obviously a Chicago Town pizza you can get in the supermarket. Very disappointing. Otherwise an ok pub.

Good atmosphere and great bar food

Mason was very cordial and helpful. The food was fantastic. If you want some authentic British meat pie, definitely the place to go what. We had a couple pints of ale. They were good but they weren't told us Americans have to have it cold. But overall great experience and I would definitely recommend it to anybody that wants to try some really good authentic meat pies.

I go to London for work with 2 other lads, we go in to this pub even if we are staying at other hotels in the area, we like the staff food is good value pies are tasty, the New Zealand bar man is a great laugh, remembers us and gives our mate a hard time for being miserable and moaning. All the staff are great to be honest, can’t fault the bar yeah it’s got a higher price compared to others but you can tell they look after the beer pipes as it’s always clean and crisp! Great bar

I went here for a drink and my irreplaceable ring fell down the floorboards. Lydia, please make her CEO of the pub, was the only reason I got it back!!! She was incredible. Would come back again just for her amazing service. Please give her a pay rise!!

Terrific little pub around the corner from the Hilton Waterloo hotel. There's an upstairs patio, and they serve excellent meat pies. Highly recommended.

The photos on your website are nothing like the pies we were served tonight and they aren’t particularly nice either with very little meat. The mash is from a packet and was watery plus the gravy is served in a dish for a dip rather than a jug as advertised.

A brilliant local pub! We go regularly after work - there's always a great atmosphere, the staff are friendly and helpful, and the drinks are what you'd expect from a local. When the weather is good, the terrace is a great hidden gem if you don't want to stand on the pavement. I have made bookings for events, and they are helpful and responsive - even with large party sizes!

We visited on a Sunday evening. Relaxed atmosphere with what I guess were locals as off the tourist trail, a great bonus. Brilliant real ales both cask and keg. Also tried one of their pie, peas, mash and gravy. Pie and peas good, but a disappointing smear of mash under the pie. Still went back for some beers mid week. A buzzing place for the after work crowd.

Visiting from Canada and 10/10 recommend eating and drinking here. The staff are so friendly and accommodating making excellent suggestions for drink and food. The atmosphere is fun and lively. The pies are absolutely phenomenal! Also recommend the Rekorderlig strawberry lime cider!

Great pub with an excellent selection of ales. Food (especially the pies) is very good and reasonably priced. Location is excellent, near to Waterloo and Hampton Hotel but in a quiet side street. The pub has a cool rooftop garden and the service is top notch!

Such a lovely pub, tucked in the peaceful streets behind The Old Vic. We went for Pieminster pies, and stayed for the atmosphere! Top tip: one of the bar tenders can do card tricks! Really nice ambience, so chilled and laid back. Would definitely recommend!!!

A nice pub - stopped by for a quick drink. It was lovely and quiet and everyone was friendly. Good drinks selection and nice outdoor area.

Excellent place for work drinks, but they have very few non-alcoholic drinks and the only food they serve is sausage rolls, so vegetarians would have a hard time.

We were staying at the nearby hotel and wanted a last drink of the night. The pub is adorable and the staff super friendly. Fun crowd hanging out to watch cricket.

Great Pub with limited but excellent choices for food. Pies and mash, burgers, prawns all tasty. Beer choices were many and two I had were great. Service was attentive and quick. The staff even remembered us and our child ces after the first night. Close to our hotel.

We stayed here for a few nights and it was great. Felt very safe, very welcome, and the room was neat and clean. The staff were lovely, and the food was awesome.

Was the first stop in London, since it was near the hotel. Rooftop seating was great, service was great, was especially kind to my kiddos. Pies were awesome and the Guinness was cold. Couldn't have asked for better.

So a traditional English pub owned by an Aussie serving good beers to a trio from Australia/USA. Popped in for a couple of drinks and the place was welcoming and relaxing. Didn’t stay for a meal and so whilst the pie menu looked interesting I can’t comment. Would go back.

Beer disappointing. If it's off then either don't serve it or change the barrel. Shouldn't take more than a 3 or 4 pulls to fill a pint. And my name doesn't begin with a G either.

Great pub. Perfect as an after work bar, bustling with an great mix of people.

Ordered 2 pies and after asking if mine was the steak pie they responded yes. Unfortunately it was not the steak pie yet after I mentioned this the only response from a manager was that I had eaten some of the pie already. No apology The next pie for my friend was brought without peas and also tuned out to be the wrong pie The manager then came to the table but did not apologize, only jokingly said he might fire the staff Been here before and never had anything but positive but over the last two visits the service has dipped considerably. Very unfortunate Also don't bother with the mash with the pie as it is the smallest serving I have ever seen with a pie

Staff and venue itself are great, however the food is just not good enough for the prices they're charging. Drinks are very expensive but at the same rate as you'd expect in the area.

The Stage Door has changed a bit over the years since 'Aussie Dave' was running it. Nostalgia aside, it is a great place with some really nice beers.

We've took a couple of drinks in the sunny roof terrace. Very comfortable with the music and the good company.
