We booked for lunch at The Stag. Unfortunately the outside is in need of some loving, compared to the old pictures, but the inside is lovely and rustic. It is only a small place with big tables, so we recommend booking. The food was lovely. We’re both vegetarians, but one of us doesn’t have dairy either and this place catered for us. In fact they went out of their way to double check or offer something else, for the more awkward of us.. everything was cooked to perfection and tasted lovely. I had the sherry trifle (it definitely had sherry in). This place also allows dogs. The staff were friendly and even offered to run us somewhere, if we couldn’t get a taxi. We would return here, if we’re ever in the area again.

Popped into the Stag on the off chance of some lunch, unfortunately on arrival were informed they were fully booked for the afternoon, so we decided to sit at the bar and stay for a drink, the pub itself is beautiful inside, friendly staff, just as we were thinking of leaving we were told if we still wanted lunch they could fit us in, well all I can is was well worth it, the best roast dinner I've ever had, all cooked beautifully and well presented, will definitely be going back 😍

The best Sunday lunch I’ve had. I had the beef and my friend had the lamb, both were moist and melt in the mouth. Cooked to perfection! All the accompaniments cooked wonderfully as well. The pub itself has a lovely interior and is in a great little village although it’s a little deceiving from the outside. Really good value for money and would definitely visit again

A rare review, but The Stag deserve it. We visited on the 6th and had an impeccable Sunday lunch and dessert. The Beef was cooked to perfection and the accompaniments were too, shout out in particular for the Cauliflower cheese!! Hosts Steve and Oliver were super friendly and even put up some bunting as we were celebrating my Mum’s birthday. Keep up the good work chaps, we will be back!

A group of friends and I were staying nearby, so booked in for Sunday lunch. Don’t be deceived by the slightly worn exterior of the place, the inside of the pub is welcoming, traditional styled inn with a modern twist and they are currently undergoing some renovations, which will no doubt improve on an already fab place. We were welcomed by the chef & the manager/owner who recommended a lovely walk to us as we were a bit early. Once inside, there’s a crackling fire and lovely wooden furnishings, the staff couldn’t be more friendly and accommodating. But most of all the food was superb! I had the beef roast and every bit of the meal was delicious, including the raspberry roulade for dessert, my friends all had the sticky toffee pudding which I’m told was divine. We left very full and content. Lovely experience from start to finish. The chef even popped out at the end to wish us goodbye! Would definitely return if ever in the area again.

We made a fantastic discovery in north Devon. After trying to find a suitable eating establishment on a late Sunday afternoon in May. We fell upon the The Stag in Rackenford. As we didn’t book in advance’ we wasn’t sure we’d get a table. But to our delight we were offered a lovely table in this 11th century pub restaurant’ near a open fire. We both ordered the pork Sunday roast’. The cracking was truly the best I’ve ever tasted’ And the meat perfectly cook’ with ample of vegetables on the side. We were also offered Yorkshire puddings at no extra cost. I can’t fault the main courses. It was superb cooking. So we decided to try the desserts too. I had the raspberry triffle ’ and my wife had a sticky toffee pudding. We are used to fine dinning’. And can only complement the chef on a superb mouth spa experience’. We will definitely be making a return visit one day. Congratulations to everyone concerned’. It’s a truly amazing pub restaurant

My 2 sons, doggo and I enjoyed probably the best Sunday lunch EVER today at the Stag. The food was fantastic, we all cleared our plates and managed a spectacular dessert as well. Brilliant value, fantastic, unhurried service and a really warm welcome from owner Oliver. The Stag is a real hidden gem, under renovation outside, would love to visit again to see the end result. If the refurbished interior is anything to go by, this lovely pub is going to be stunning. Cannot recommend highly enough. Picture shows children's portion.

We visited this pub during our stay in Devon as had already read good reviews - Decided to come on a Sunday to enjoy a roast which was absolutely amazing!!! Probably one of the best we have had in a long time, the gravy was incredible, so much so we had to order more! The outside of the pub is clearly undergoing some renovation works but the inside is lovely, renovated to a very good standard and the staff were very attentive. Our 4 legged friend was also made very welcome! We would highly recommend!!!

We enjoyed a lovely evening meal with family/ friends. The pub was a perfect antidote from a rather wet and cold night, with a open fire and a cosy atmosphere. The team are all very welcoming and the service was excellent. We were allowed to sample the draught beers before making that all important decision. The food was beautifully cooked and presented and everyone enjoyed it. The homemade bread served before the main meal was gorgeous - just make sure you leave room for your main and of course one of the yummy desserts. Thank you for creating such a lovely place for us to enjoy.

Superb. Simply superb. Crumbling plaster outside could put passers by off, but due to its location I’d expect people to be making a special visit here, especially given it being the oldest pub in Devon. The interior decor and warm welcome by the landlord however were in a complete contrast to the exterior. Food cooked to order, so the cottage pie will take 20mins’ to cook from ordering. But the wait is worth it! (that and the beef burgers were made with the excellent Dexter beef). We were a party of 12, including young babies, a vegan and a gluten free dinner and all were treated wonderfully and fully catered for.My plaice was cooked on point, with equally well cooked veg. The desert of sticky toffee pudding, (with rum), was voted by all who had it the best they had ever had, (and I wouldn’t argue with that!) Very well priced. Just wished we lived closer - but maybe best not for my waistline! My only negative would be that there are no ‘starters’ on offer which was a pity and something a number of us would have purchased given the chance.

I was travelling down to Barnstable when I followed the sign for the Stag from the main road. Just stopped off for lunch at this lovely Devon pub on the way home from a few days in Woolacombe. There was 2 adults and 2 x 12 year olds in our party. We were warmly welcomed by one of the owners along with a real log fire, it was really cold out! The menu was small but comprehensive as you could choose soup or sandwiches through to a full lamb dinner. We were also offered children’s portions which we did take them up on. We were advised that the bread was made on the premises so the 2 adults had sandwiches and I have to say that the bread was delicious. The chips were also home made and very light & crispy. My friend and I visited the stag inn today for a traditional roast and were amazed with what we got. It was so reasonable priced and was delicious! We will definitely be returning!

I can't fault my evening beer with rump steak meals - lovely. A nice village pub with a jukebox adding the Saturday fun feel. Thanks

we went to the stag for fathers day lunch, a party of five the roast was excellent, two had the venison and three had the beef, the portion size was adequate and the food was served piping hot and hot plates, it was full of flavor well cooked and well presented.

What a wonderful surprise to stumble upon this quaint pub for a Sunday Lunch. We were greeted like members of the family, Mum was behind the bar and her two daughters did the waiting on tables. The pub was full of locals enjoying a drink and eating their Sunday roasts. My friend and I had roast Hake, this was absolutely delicious, the flesh just melted in your mouth, this was accompanied with a great selection of in season vegetables. A truly memorable meal. This is a very friendly pub serving good ale and excellent food. Well worth a visit!

Had a lovely time in the Stag Inn. The hosts are really friendly and the atmosphere is brilliant. Food was lovely, we had the curry and it was really nice. Well worth a visit if your in the area. This is a authentic old pub saved from development by the locals. Duck when you go through the doors as the beams are low and they hurt.

It was the Friday in April when it snowed and there was a lovely welcome fire and host. Great food for lunch time - burger was 'melt in the mouth' excellent and ham, egg and chips was all locally sourced.

A magical old cob and thatch - higgledy-piggledy, but really charming - it had to be explored. Inside were old cobbles and flagstone floors. A welcoming open fire with the oldest settle I have ever seen - a lovely lady behind the bar - welcoming but not pushy - just right. There were menus on the very old polished bar and a specials chalk board. Real ales, good house wine and the food was lovely. I had venison (expensive but worth it) and my companion, a veggie, had pasta and vegetables. Both freshly cooked and delicious. My friend had a pud which disappeared rather quickly and I had coffee. The building was, indeed, interesting - we detected a 'presence' in one room... The Stag is reputedly the oldest pub in Devon - around 800 years old. We very much appreciated the resistance to modernisation. You could see and feel the history. Very memorable surroundings, a lovely meal, some good wine and kind, helpful hospitality - what more could you want. Diane E

Impressive traditional Pub with lots of atmosphere. Good place to stop off as long as you do not expect too much of the food.

Went to The Stag yesterday to check out the good reports of the new chef Jo. Can confirm these - excellent chiili con carne for one of us and delicious chicken and leek pie for the other. But most importantly booked ourselves in for another of Anita's Indian food nights, when she cooks herself - last time was hake in a spicy crust, aloo muttar (potato and peas) and a creamy egg curry, all a real treat; the best Indian food we've ever found in Devon, which seems to go strangely well with a roaring fire and Devon farming chat. It doesn't happen more than once a month and the next is Friday 22nd, so keep an eye on the website.

Having never visited The Stag before we were pleasantly surprised to find a good old fashioned traditional pub that served excellent food. Service was attentive & discreet which is nice in today's general attitude of 'take it or leave it'! Definitely will visit again!

Myself and a friend had lunch here one week day, the landlady is very welcoming and friendly, the pub had a lovely homely Country feel to it and there were locals there eating which is always a good sign. The pub has lots of character and free wifi (bonus!) there is a nice selection on the menu, I had the pie - it was lovely and home cooked and a good size, very tasty! My friend had fish and chips and again she throughly enjoyed it and it was fresh and a good size, we both had desserts, the pecan pie and whipped cream was lovely and the ice cream with whipped cream and berry compote was beautiful! I'm not a lover of whipped cream but this was amazing and tasty and a lovely consistency! The pub had loads of character and is a ideal place to stop off for lunch as it's just off the main road outside of Tiverton and easily signposted and there is a beer garden and car parking at the rear! A great country pub wig home cooked food with a warm welcome and reasonably priced food!

I was driving along the A361 to Batnstaple and spotted a sign to The Stag Inn, it was a little further than I had expected, the pub had a thatched roof and low doorways, you often needed to duck! A notice suggested it was probably the oldest pub in Devon. There was a large log fire burning in the bar, which was very welcoming. I opted for a cheese and chutney sandwich on spelt bread which came with a few crisps and salad - very nice. I also enjoyed a pint of Proper Job (an excellent Cornish beer). There were several other people dining. Service was very pleasant, I'd have no qualms about going back.

There was a lovely fire in the main room and the food was pretty good. My two companions both had beef burgers which they said were excellent. I ordered chilli con carne which I had not eaten for years. The wine list was perfunctory and there are very few wines offered by the glass. The Thatcher’s Gold cider was pleasant.Given the temperature outside was four degrees, I wondered why the front door was permanently open. It meant the cold air came right up the inner passage and into the loos, which were freezing. I asked the owner, Anita Singh, why the radiators in the loos weren’t switched on. She replied that the entire central heating system did not work. I asked how she managed to live in such a cold place. She told me she lived a mile and a half away so clearly she felt no need to have it repaired. So, a lovely place and decent pub food. If you want to attract more people to mid Devon in February, however, I suggest you turn the heating on!

We booked a table for Sunday lunch en-route for a week in North West Devon. Had the roast beef, which was quite good, although the blackened Yorkshire pudding must be a Devon thing, as it wouldn't be popular in Yorkshire. Although there was a blazing fire in the bar, the heat didn't get as far as our table and we had to keep our coats on throughout the meal. Overall, it was reasonable break in our journey and the staff there were friendly.

Unfortunately the Tiverton store was very poor, 1. At 12.00pm 75% of bakery goods still baking and on trolley waiting for packing, shelves quarter full. 2. Either they had no staff turn in or what , but the shelves needed filling. There where cages of boxes everywhere. 3. The cafe was madness, tables completely full of dirty plates etc. Uneaten breakfasts left, trolleys of trays waiting to be taken in for washing up, the hygiene standards where terrible, no cups, coffee machine empty, no milk, display all messing , I saw one 2 members of staff, again they must of been short staffed. I spoke to a manager and he bluntly told me morrisons have cut back on staff , so customers would have to accept it Unfortunately. Very sad.

We heard The White Hart was under new ownership so we came along for midweek lunch - it was great! We were warmly greeted by a kind lady behind the bar which had lots of ale, lager & cider choices. We ordered the daily special with a drink which for £12 was great value. The Cod & Chips and Scampi were exactly what you’d expect from a country town pub grub - well worth the money. The desert of STP was also lush. We’d definitely recommend this pub for a great quality and great value midweek lunch. We’ll come back for Sunday Lunch soon.

I am thrilled that you are getting back up and running. I've had so many relaxed and friendly hours in the cafe with friends that I am looking forward to more accompanied by a fab nut roast and side salads fit for a queen. Airy and plenty of space (unlike other cafes that cram as many in as they can) so it feels very Covid safe even without have to make big changes.
