Went for a meal on a Thursday evening and the pub was very quiet. When I walked in. I was the only customer so felt a little awkward. But the staff were welcoming and the young girl behind the bar was very friendly and chatted with me until my friend arrived. We were shown the specials menu and given actual menus too for dinner before taking a seat by the fire. I noticed how lovely all the laid-up tables looked, a very lovely looking pub with a nice ambience. Service from the lady (possibly the landlady) was great, very efficient and friendly with no pressure to order and was very accommodating with food requests. The food itself was very nice - fresh, tasty and hot! Shamefully it was my first time here when I only live 10 minutes away but I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and will definitely be back!

Not sure if we caught this place on an "off" night but for the price, we were a bit disappointed. £11 for 5 small pieces of Squid as a starter, followed by being served prawns instead of mussels with a main (they did bring out some mussels seperately once we made them aware of their mistake). Biggest disappointment was being given a steak that was edging towards well-done when I emphasised that I want it rare. I didn't want to send it back as I appreciate it's a complete waste of food but yeah...definitely wasn't rare. Friendly enough staff and nice beer on tap. I know this is a cracking pub for a pint after a summer walk but we won't be returning for food I'm afraid.

Lovely pub that is near but far. Easier to get to from the M5 than you think and a perfect place for lunch or dinner. Food is good and well priced. The views from the cabins in the beer garden are to die for. Lynda, the landlady is very nice but Dorian, the landlord is awesome and worth the trip alone. Probably the best pub on the north west side of the Blackdown Hills.

First time we have been here and hopefully won't be the last. The food was very very good, I had the slow cooked pork belly which I can say is easily the best I have ever had. My wife had the spinach and mushroom risotto which was excellent. We ate outside in one of the little cabins overlooking the valley which we thought were a great idea too. All in all, one of the best meals we have had and a thoroughly enjoyable evening, highly recommended.

Bizarre landlady who obviously likes the sound of her own voice and is extremely overbearing and patronising to her staff who could do a much better job of running the pub than she does... If you read this please take note! Other than that the food was nice, bit pricey at £14 for a burger but it was pretty decent food. Decor was really nice - the pub was in perfect condition and felt pretty special to be honest as did the location with a really good view across the blackdowns.

We stayed here overnight in our motorhome as part of the Brit Stops scheme. The approach from the M6 was rather windy and narrow in places but upon arrival we were rewarded with a beautiful view and a warm welcome. We had a really good evening meal in the cosy pub along with a few glasses of wine and beer. Our dog enjoyed lying in front of the open fire. Dessert was delicious too - warm chocolate brownie served with ice cream. I would highly recommend this lovely pub.

We were camping locally and ate here twice, the people who run the pub are extremely welcoming and took time to chat to us about our trip. The food was amazing, Friday from the menu and then the most amazing roast dinner on Sunday (the triple roast option is incredible). In addition, it was the best pint of Guinness I've had in ages....all in all a wonderful pub. Go there and treat yourself.

The pub is in a lovely location and the interior decor and open fire makes it attractive but the food and staff let’s this pub down. The barman was disinterested to the point of being rude despite us being the only people at the bar. We ordered the sharing vege mezze as it was stated as consisting of hummus, guacamole, roasted baby tomatoes, warm pitta bread etc. The mezze that we were given by the unfriendly barman comprised of cold, stale pitta, no hummus , guacamole or roasted baby tomatoes but two stuffed vine leaves and a bowl of cold ratatouille as substitutes. We would never have ordered this if we had been told. The whole time through the meal there was no one in sight to question this nor anyone behind the bar to order more drinks. When enquiring at the end of the meal when someone eventually appeared, I was told that the chef didn’t want this on the menu anymore so hadn’t bothered to make the hummus etc. No apology or recompense was offered at at £12.95 , that was probably the worst value meal I have ever had

I read a recent review of this pub in which it was described as being like Fawlty Towers. This pub is unique and original and that's what makes it great. Too many pubs in this country have been bought up by chains and sanitised with a pseudo English puby feel to appeal to the masses, resulting in a dead steril atmosphere. If you want the genuine article, then the Half Moon is it. The food in my experience is way above that of most local pubs i have been to recently, and the price fair when you consider the pressure they are all under at this time. The landlord and landlady offer a personable and offer a very welcoming atmosphere. The views from the garden are stunning. The little wooden beach type painted sheds in the summer are charming to sit in. The only reason I might not recommend is because of a reluctance for others to know what a hidden gem it is. Independent pubs like the half moon are in some cases centuries old and are part of our national identity and focal point of or communities. We should remember this and support them as much as we can before they are gone and turned in to private dwellings. This pub is a little different in some ways and as a result is excellent.

A warm welcome from the Landlord when we entered the pub (good start to the evening). We arrived a little early but our table was ready for us and we were served drinks straight away. Plenty of choice on the menu and specials board. For starters my husband had squid off the main menu, which he thoroughly enjoyed and I had the Fowey mussels off the specials board - cooked to perfection. We both followed with the Chicken breast, (another winner). Desert, hubby had Blueberry Creme Brulee and I had Ice Cream both tasty. Apart from the food being good, the interior was very clean and nicely decorated. I must congratulate the staff for being professional, friendly and attentive, without over doing it. The Half Moon is a little out of the way for us, but we will definitely be returning for another meal and would highly recommend this establishment for a visit. P.S. The views from the pub are awesome.

The lady owner is a very unfriendly person. I can't understand why she doesn't realise people go out for a meal to enjoy themselves. They pay to have a nice meal and be treated with common decency. All she does is talks to people like they're her enemy. If this pub is getting good reviews it's probably because she's getting her staff and friends to write them. Will never go to this pub ever again. Although I would if she left and new people took over.

What a shame the staff didn’t match the quality of the food. Felt like a bit of a Fawty Towers. Sat down, and our order was taken , to be promptly told if I had realised you were having starters we have more, after being told all the offerings were on the door. Drink order was taken and offered 3 different sizes of coke, half a pint, pint or one in the middle, opting for a pint and the one in the middle, were charged at the end for 2 x 16 0z sizes !!! The starters arrived , hence no mention of moules as per web site, we were then offered horseradish sauce for our starters , strange but hey ho!! . Then the main course arrived , a boiling hot bowl of cauliflower cheese was placed right in front of a 6 month old baby in his high chair, good job mummy was quick thinking 🤔 and said please move it quickly before we have a scolded baby. Food was nice, plates cleared away, then we had more cauliflower cheese and veg brought to the table , odd ? . Oh my choice was with tender stem broccoli , no sign of that . Pudding time, begrudgingly the waitress took our order , Bakewell tart with clotted cream, what could possibly go wrong, yes , no clotted cream, just whipped, but the landlady spotted the mistake and brought us some just we were finishing our puds. Then the bill arrived, quoted on website as a standard fee for 2 or 3 courses, but not on our bill, we we charged all items individually. I have been poorly and this was the first time we had all met up since Christmas and it was my son’s birthday. Needless to say , we were disappointed as the website painted a far greater picture than the actual experience, both of us travelled quite a way too meet here.

We visited this pub at lunchtime yesterday. It was not quite opening time so we sat in the car park, admiring the stunning views and lovely little row of painted beach huts. Once the pub was open we ordered lunch, my husband had the burger and I had the chicken dish, cooked with white wine, garlic and cream. We both thought the food was delicious, my chicken was particularly good, to the point where I finished my plate completely (unusual for me!). We both thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will certainly visit again, just wish it was a little closer to home but its worth the trip.

We visited here on a Saturday evening . We hadn’t booked but rang on our way home from a day out and luckily they had a table available. The pub itself is cosy and comfortable. There were plenty of tables and a real fire burning. The staff were friendly and the menu was varied with specials and a good choice of veggie and vegan meals. We had a steak meal and a belly pork meal which were both delicious, hot and presented well. Our desserts were home made and delicious too. The locals were friendly and we left feeling we had had a very pleasant evening. It’s out of the way but definitely worth finding. It was dark when we were there but there’s a lovely view from outside, there were little cabins to sit in outside. We will certainly return. 😊

We booked for lunch mid week in January and had a fantastic meal in cosy surroundings after a lovely walk across to the Wellington Monument. The Half Moon offers a varied menu which caters to modern as well as traditional tastes. The Malaysian chicken curry was superb, excellent fish and chips and a very tasty vege tagine. I don't even want to give this review a 1 star, but seems I have no other option. When I entered the pub I was lead to a small table which me, my partner and daughter couldn't fit our legs under as it was a 2 seater table. The table was very sticky and the smell coming from the carpet was vile. We then ordered drinks which took 20mins to arrive, followed by food. When the food finally arrived another whole hour later I could of cried, as I was so hungry by then. I took the bun off the top of my burger and the burger just all fell apart. It was like they'd just stuffed mince meat into a bun! I was not happy and made a complaint to the owner behind the bar. To my amazement she was very rude and loadly suggest infront of a pub full of public that she'd apparently anticipated that I wasn't going to pay anyway! In shock and embarrassment I insisted that she just charged me the whole bill as she made me feel small infront of the whole pub and she took my money. The 3 of us left, out of pocket and still hungry! Avoid this place at all means unless you just want a nice pint in their beer garden to enjoy the views..

There are obviously staffing issues at this pub which is having a detrimental effect on their business. Our table was booked for 6.45pm. Our order got taken at 7.10pm and the food arrived at 8.10pm...nearly an hour and a half wait for the first course ! At least 3 other groups left without having more than one course and another customer was having quite a heated debate with staff due to the interminable wait for food. We left after one course because we couldn't bear the thought of waiting for a dessert. This is such a shame because the food is exceptional. Kudos to the chef for serving up one of the best battered cod and chips with a side of minted peas and tartar sauce that I have ever tasted. So a mixed bag really...exceptional food but be prepared for an equally exceptional delay. Hopefully they will get their staffing issues resolved in the near future !

The welcome was so friendly and accommodating when we requested pre dinner drinks outside in the garden - nothing was too much trouble. When we sat down to our table, the service was swift and friendly. We had delicious cheesy garlic bread to start with whilst waiting for our mains. All of our mains came up at the same time and it was absolutely delicious. Good, home cooked and fresh food and plentiful too. We were too full for deserts, but they sounded delicious. A really beautiful view from the garden, we had a table booked but unfortunately was poor service and food, we ordered and waited an hour for starters which was fine as we were in no rush, our starters were served and we were told one main course was sold out, so we chose an alternative. One meal was a lamb madras for £16.50 the popadom never arrived and no Mango chutney was available, I believe changing this and not having the relevant condiments is unacceptable. When I said whilst paying I’d not received the popadoms. She asked if I’d like to take them home! ....joke

We arrived at the early time of 6.15pm to be greeted by the manager, she asked us where we would like to sit in or out and we chose in (what a huge mistake that was). When the manager finally came over to our table to take our food order we had to ask if she was taking our drinks order at which point she said she would! We ordered our food at 6.30pm - at 7.20 we were still waiting with two tired hungry children. The manger came over and informed us that they had an issue with our check and that they were doing the children’s food and then ours would follow after - follow after????? We came out to eat as a family!!!! When the kids food finally came the chips were covered in salt and the nuggets were very clearly burnt. Our food finally followed after and thankfully was very nice (thank god)When the manager came to clear our plates she apologised again but there was nothing warm about her apology and it felt forced. We then decided as a table to order deserts as there was a biscoffe banoffee pie 3 of us fancied. The manager who was the only one taking orders to keep control of the orders took our order and within 5 minutes came back to inform us that they had ran out of the pie - why did she not know this? She should know all her stock levels. Yet her excuse was they ran out at lunch time - TAKE IT OFF THE BOARD THEN! The main reason for this review is regarding how not “child friendly” this pub is. We booked a high chair and turned up and wasn’t offered one I had to go and find one, then when the manager came to take our order she quoted “oh, do we need to turn the volume down”??? Well thanks very much for ruining our night with one little throw away comment. Making a parent already aware of her potentially autistic son with sensory sound issues is heartbreaking! I am very aware that at times my child is loud but at the same time when being 5 what child isn’t. To top the same issue off, when the table behind us came to their table the manger apologised for the noise levels whilst directly drawing their attention to our table, making us and the table arriving very uncomfortable. Over all this was a very negative experience. Had the manager came to our table and informed us of the issues and maybe offered a free round of drinks or something then we would have been a little more understanding of the situation.I feel sorry for the staff working here with a seriously controlling manager who thinks she had everything under control when actually it’s all falling apart around her.

This pub provided some of the nicest food and most disappointing food we've ever had. The menu is somewhat misleading, as blackberry crumbles are actually apple (a suprise during eating) and cheesecake is more like whipped cream. Service was a tad chaotic due to Covid regulations but in general well managed and staff were polite and friendly. Your experience will likely depend on what you order.

There is a lovely family atmosphere at The Half Moon. The food is really good and dishes are home made and delicious. The garden area has fantastic views as well. All in all a great pub.

The wife and I popped in her for a spot of lunch. Lovely charming pub, friendly owners and staff I had the calamari and lamb and the lady had the pea soup and chicken supreme. All meals arrived in a timely manner, hot, tasty and substantial portions for the price. We sat by the fire which was lit by the landlord and had a most pleasant natter. Well worth the drive, great food, large portions, excellent value for money. Well done

In need of a trad Sunday roast without the cooking and managed to secure a table at The Half Moon. Busy, buzzing bar; roaring log fire and a delicious (almost as good as home) Sunday roast. Glorious ice cream and local cider set us up nicely for an autumn day dog walk. Highly recommended.

Had hear great things about this place but was very disappointed with the roast. Soggy potatoes, thin gravy. Also had a pork pie which was also very small and expensive for what it was. Great view from the beer garden but food was poor. :(

Having returned from a short break in Spanish San Sebastian (the city with the most Michelin star restaurants in the world) and after we had a Sunday morning stroll to the Wellington monument we were very definitely in the mood for a traditional Sunday lunch. We had eaten fabulous Spanish pinxos all week, but we really wanted some fine English food! Oh my goodness did the Half Moon deliver! Our Sunday lunch and pudding was the best food we had eaten in a week!!

As soon as you get out of your car here you’ll see the most stunning view, the pub is in a beautiful spot overlooking the Blackdown Hills with a lovely beer garden. We were greeted by a charming barmaid who poured us a lovely drink and chatted pleasantly. We enjoyed chatting with some very friendly and like minded people as we had our drinks before being shown to our table. Our starter arrived promptly and was absolutely delicious - the scallops were excellent. Mains followed and really were faultless - the steak was the best you would find anywhere as was the guineafowl which came with a delicious jus. It was all clearly cooked by a fantastic chef. The young man who looked after our table was attentive and extremely polite. We don’t often leave reviews but on this occasion everything was so enjoyable that we felt we wanted to. Running a pub with food must be a thankless task at times but we had a truly delightful evening and will certainly be returning.

I have visited this establishment only once and, whilst one should never say “never” I will nonetheless “never” go back.Having book a table for 7.30 PM I decided that by 9.30 PM, when our food finally arrived that I would get up and walk out.I honestly do not know how people can run an establishment like this and stay in business.
