Found this little pub after doing a charity skydive not too far away in Honiton. The views from outside the pub are absolutely beautiful! The inside is so lovely and traditional! staff were very welcoming. It was like a traditional old pub and not like a chain type pub. If it is a chain, it didn't feel like one, felt individual. Lovely open fire at ine end with a bit roaring fire, very cosy. The food! Well I have to say the food was superb! Steak for main, I could've eaten it twice it was that nice. My daughter had the fish and chips, and it didn't disappoint! I would highly recommend this lovey quaint pub. Thank you

A whole year to wait until we return, can we wait that long...? Tonight, we had our best meal of the year, and it was a year ago since we were similarly sated... The Half Moon at Clayhidon is possibly the best eating house that we have experienced. The food and service are superb. Tonight we returned for a rematch with the pork belly, and it did not disappoint, accompanied with dauphinoise potato, and tenderstem broccoli and the accompanying sauce, it was certainly a winner. Our party of four, had a good cross section of meals, two pork belly, 10oz sirloin steak and the Tuscan chicken, all were superb, and surprisingly enough, we all had a sweet, three Tia Maria and espresso brulles and a sticky toffee pudding, all absolutely superb... So roll on next year, and thank you Dorien, Linda, Rylan and Connor, (if we forgot anyone, so sorry) thank you again... Oh , and the beer and cider were all excellent...x

Leaving Wellington, found a dog friendly pub on Google ( The Half Moon ) what a find, although we never had lunch there, the food looked delicious.friendly staff and a great landlady overseeing all procedures. After sampling two pints of Camden Town dark ale, the boss was kind enough to allow me to keep the glass, bless her.I would thoroughly recommend everyone to visit this upmarket establishment on the Devon border, you won’t be disappointed. What an amazing little place to stop for a bite to eat we were very lucky as didn’t arrive untill nearly two and i thought they would of finished serving but thankfully they go on untill three . staff very welcoming , we ordered at the bar and sat in the garden to eat . i had hallumi burger which was delicious as i’m a vegetation . my partner had the katsu burger which dispite what another couple had said was not cooked as pink and sent back ,!!! my partners was lovely he said it’s the marinade that made it look pink . even told the chef so . i have to say the chef was very professional and came out and apologised to the customer .10 out of 10 for that well done . The views from the garden are amazing , and there are nice seating pods there ( sheds ) i’m assuming from covid times but all painted in bright colours looks great . we will definatly return . Thank you do much . oh plenty of parking there also .

We were on a long road trip with two dogs and suddenly found ourselves desperate for a Sunday Lunch, as you do. We found the Half Moon on google, and called to see if we could stop by. They agreed and we made our way down some lovely country roads to get there. Parking was easy, and we went in to order from the large Sunday Lunch menu. We bought some lovely (I assume they were lovely because the dogs wolfed them down) dog treats from the bar, and went to sit in one of the little chalets they have in their garden. The view was amazing, and the food came quickly. It was just what the doctor ordered. Fresh vegetables, well-cooked roasts and delicious gravy. Two cappuccinos later, and we were on our way again. So happy we got hungry in the vicinity of this pup. I hope we get to return.

We've been to this pub a few times for lunch as a break in a long journey. The pub is beautiful, location stunning and garden with beach hut style seating is fab. Ordered variety of starters as a tapas style lunch, which we've done before and was previously great. Today it wasn't great. The squid was £9.50 for 5 pieces, some dressing and some lettuce, way over priced for such a small portion. The duo of houmous from specials board was also £9.50 and consisted of 2 smears of houmous, about a dessert spoonful of each, 8 olives and some flat bread that was one small flat bread triangle which had been split and toasted. We were informed that the ham hock terrine was substituted with a pork dish which we agreed to order, and it was a pork and green peppercorn mush ?Pate served with some lettuce, 3 fingers of bread and pickle, along with some plastic wrap that I found in the pork mush. Not nice. Thank goodness we'd ordered some chips, which were great and a decent portion size. We ate, and left without ordering anything else. In comparison to our previous lunches here, today's was very over priced for very small portions and horrible pork stuff. We would not return.

I cannot fault the food, it was lovely! Service was a bit slow, one waiter started to clear our table, but didn't come back to finish the job. A waitress asked if we would like to order a sweet, after a wait, we were asked by someone else if we'd like to order a sweet and the board was brought to us. We ordered, after a while they were brought to us without cutlery, so we had another wait for a waitress to bring it to us. Along with this when we arrived we said we had a booking, but we weren't ticked off the reservations, when the owner/manager realised who we were, she said she thought we hadn't shown up! And... She questioned us on who we had sat with...... STILL I would recommend a visit for the food, it was honestly delicious!

Lovely pub, great atmosphere, shame about the food. Ordered Camembert to share, this arrived cold, which they replaced. Then the mains, veg nut roast with hard roast potatoes and hard veg, then steak pie also bad cold roast potatoes and it was meant to have red cabbage no cabbage arrived , the steak was tough. Ordered a second pint beer was off. That was replaced with apologies. Waited 30mins and still no one asked us if we would like see a dessert menu. So we left. Staff were great, but food was so awful. Beautiful pub, but shocking food, left disappointed and dissatisfied. Perhaps are faces didnt fit there cliental.

Went for a meal on a Thursday evening and the pub was very quiet. When I walked in. I was the only customer so felt a little awkward. But the staff were welcoming and the young girl behind the bar was very friendly and chatted with me until my friend arrived. We were shown the specials menu and given actual menus too for dinner before taking a seat by the fire. I noticed how lovely all the laid-up tables looked, a very lovely looking pub with a nice ambience. Service from the lady (possibly the landlady) was great, very efficient and friendly with no pressure to order and was very accommodating with food requests. The food itself was very nice - fresh, tasty and hot! Shamefully it was my first time here when I only live 10 minutes away but I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and will definitely be back!

Not sure if we caught this place on an "off" night but for the price, we were a bit disappointed. £11 for 5 small pieces of Squid as a starter, followed by being served prawns instead of mussels with a main (they did bring out some mussels seperately once we made them aware of their mistake). Biggest disappointment was being given a steak that was edging towards well-done when I emphasised that I want it rare. I didn't want to send it back as I appreciate it's a complete waste of food but yeah...definitely wasn't rare. Friendly enough staff and nice beer on tap. I know this is a cracking pub for a pint after a summer walk but we won't be returning for food I'm afraid.

Bizarre landlady who obviously likes the sound of her own voice and is extremely overbearing and patronising to her staff who could do a much better job of running the pub than she does... If you read this please take note! Other than that the food was nice, bit pricey at £14 for a burger but it was pretty decent food. Decor was really nice - the pub was in perfect condition and felt pretty special to be honest as did the location with a really good view across the blackdowns.

We stayed here overnight in our motorhome as part of the Brit Stops scheme. The approach from the M6 was rather windy and narrow in places but upon arrival we were rewarded with a beautiful view and a warm welcome. We were camping locally and ate here twice, the people who run the pub are extremely welcoming and took time to chat to us about our trip. The pub is in a lovely location and the interior decor and open fire makes it attractive but the food and staff let’s this pub down. The barman was disinterested to the point of being rude despite us being the only people at the bar. We ordered the sharing vege mezze as it was stated as consisting of hummus, guacamole, roasted baby tomatoes, warm pitta bread etc. The mezze that we were given by the unfriendly barman comprised of cold, stale pitta, no hummus , guacamole or roasted baby tomatoes but two stuffed vine leaves and a bowl of cold ratatouille as substitutes. We would never have ordered this if we had been told. The whole time through the meal there was no one in sight to question this nor anyone behind the bar to order more drinks. When enquiring at the end of the meal when someone eventually appeared, I was told that the chef didn’t want this on the menu anymore so hadn’t bothered to make the hummus etc. No apology or recompense was offered at at £12.95 , that was probably the worst value meal I have ever had

I read a recent review of this pub in which it was described as being like Fawlty Towers. This pub is unique and original and that's what makes it great. Too many pubs in this country have been bought up by chains and sanitised with a pseudo English puby feel to appeal to the masses, resulting in a dead steril atmosphere. If you want the genuine article, then the Half Moon is it. The food in my experience is way above that of most local pubs i have been to recently, and the price fair when you consider the pressure they are all under at this time. The landlord and landlady offer a personable and offer a very welcoming atmosphere. The views from the garden are stunning. The little wooden beach type painted sheds in the summer are charming to sit in. The only reason I might not recommend is because of a reluctance for others to know what a hidden gem it is. Independent pubs like the half moon are in some cases centuries old and are part of our national identity and focal point of or communities. We should remember this and support them as much as we can before they are gone and turned in to private dwellings. This pub is a little different in some ways and as a result is excellent.

A warm welcome from the Landlord when we entered the pub (good start to the evening). We arrived a little early but our table was ready for us and we were served drinks straight away. Plenty of choice on the menu and specials board. For starters my husband had squid off the main menu, which he thoroughly enjoyed and I had the Fowey mussels off the specials board - cooked to perfection. We both followed with the Chicken breast, (another winner). Desert, hubby had Blueberry Creme Brulee and I had Ice Cream both tasty. Apart from the food being good, the interior was very clean and nicely decorated. I must congratulate the staff for being professional, friendly and attentive, without over doing it. The Half Moon is a little out of the way for us, but we will definitely be returning for another meal and would highly recommend this establishment for a visit. P.S. The views from the pub are awesome.

The lady owner is a very unfriendly person. I can't understand why she doesn't realise people go out for a meal to enjoy themselves. They pay to have a nice meal and be treated with common decency. All she does is talks to people like they're her enemy. If this pub is getting good reviews it's probably because she's getting her staff and friends to write them. Will never go to this pub ever again. Although I would if she left and new people took over.

What a shame the staff didn’t match the quality of the food. Felt like a bit of a Fawty Towers. Sat down, and our order was taken , to be promptly told if I had realised you were having starters we have more, after being told all the offerings were on the door. Drink order was taken and offered 3 different sizes of coke, half a pint, pint or one in the middle, opting for a pint and the one in the middle, were charged at the end for 2 x 16 0z sizes !!! The starters arrived , hence no mention of moules as per web site, we were then offered horseradish sauce for our starters , strange but hey ho!! . Then the main course arrived , a boiling hot bowl of cauliflower cheese was placed right in front of a 6 month old baby in his high chair, good job mummy was quick thinking 🤔 and said please move it quickly before we have a scolded baby. Food was nice, plates cleared away, then we had more cauliflower cheese and veg brought to the table , odd ? . Oh my choice was with tender stem broccoli , no sign of that . Pudding time, begrudgingly the waitress took our order , Bakewell tart with clotted cream, what could possibly go wrong, yes , no clotted cream, just whipped, but the landlady spotted the mistake and brought us some just we were finishing our puds. Then the bill arrived, quoted on website as a standard fee for 2 or 3 courses, but not on our bill, we we charged all items individually. I have been poorly and this was the first time we had all met up since Christmas and it was my son’s birthday. Needless to say , we were disappointed as the website painted a far greater picture than the actual experience, both of us travelled quite a way too meet here.

I don't even want to give this review a 1 star, but seems I have no other option. When I entered the pub I was lead to a small table which me, my partner and daughter couldn't fit our legs under as it was a 2 seater table. The table was very sticky and the smell coming from the carpet was vile. We then ordered drinks which took 20mins to arrive, followed by food. When the food finally arrived another whole hour later I could of cried, as I was so hungry by then. I took the bun off the top of my burger and the burger just all fell apart. It was like they'd just stuffed mince meat into a bun! I was not happy and made a complaint to the owner behind the bar. To my amazement she was very rude and loadly suggest infront of a pub full of public that she'd apparently anticipated that I wasn't going to pay anyway! In shock and embarrassment I insisted that she just charged me the whole bill as she made me feel small infront of the whole pub and she took my money. The 3 of us left, out of pocket and still hungry! Avoid this place at all means unless you just want a nice pint in their beer garden to enjoy the views..

The food was good although expensive and the staff pleasant however it took a very long time to be served, an hour and 45 minutes for the main course, we were there neary 3 hours in total. We were also crammed onto two small round tables and an old church pew which was very uncomfortable for such a long time, not what you would expect when you pre-booked .

There are obviously staffing issues at this pub which is having a detrimental effect on their business. Our table was booked for 6.45pm. Our order got taken at 7.10pm and the food arrived at 8.10pm...nearly an hour and a half wait for the first course ! At least 3 other groups left without having more than one course and another customer was having quite a heated debate with staff due to the interminable wait for food. We left after one course because we couldn't bear the thought of waiting for a dessert. This is such a shame because the food is exceptional. Kudos to the chef for serving up one of the best battered cod and chips with a side of minted peas and tartar sauce that I have ever tasted. So a mixed bag really...exceptional food but be prepared for an equally exceptional delay. Hopefully they will get their staffing issues resolved in the near future !

Food usually pretty good but service always slow and unorganised. Occasionally worth a visit for the nice garden if on a nice evening.

The food is excellent and so are the views. If you are a cyclist it's a cracking ride over the Blackdowns and we'll worth a visit.

We are a family of 8 staying in nearby Wellington. Made a reservation for dinner on the same day as calling them. Easy journey took us to this gorgeous little find. The views are fabulous. It was a sunny evening and when we checked in...

What a find. We are on a week's holiday in Wellington and booked a table in this gorgeous pub on the morning of our booking - a table for 8 of us. Booking process was easy and friendly. An easy journey took us to this gem of a country pub with amazing views. The welcome was so friendly and accommodating when we requested pre dinner drinks outside in the garden - nothing was too much trouble. When we sat down to our table, the service was swift and friendly. We had delicious cheesy garlic bread to start with whilst waiting for our mains. All of our mains came up at the same time and it was absolutely delicious. Good, home cooked and fresh food and plentiful too. We were too full for deserts, but they sounded delicious. This pub was faultless, the staff were so friendly and welcoming, even the chef came out and said hello. We will most certainly return if we find ourselves staying here again. Thank you Half Moon Inn. x

Sadly overstretched. Food very late, many options sold out ( limited menu - website has not been updated) and rather expensive to boot. Kookie beach huts in the garden a great idea until it got dark.... then we couldn't see our food. Pity, as it has been good here in the past.

Didnt like the way she spoke to her staff. Other customers raised an eyebrow. She didnt stop talking about nothing in particular throughout the course of our meal. Roast beef was tough, veg soggy and yorkshire pudding was eggy and burnt. The gravy was nice!...

Interesting pub. Has a small beer garden with a great view. Could do with an app to order from though as table service only and the beer garden is across the road. Unfortunately didn't get to try the food as nobody came back to take an order despite giving us menus

Only gave 1 as half isn't an option utterly disgusting, rude staff, food was below any kind of standard and cold when I complained felt like I was an inconvenience to the staff dirty and the whole experience was extremely unpleasant wouldn't be going their again

Unexpectedly stumbled upon this friendly pub on an afternoon walk, very reasonably priced drinks and friendly service.

We heard The White Hart was under new ownership so we came along for midweek lunch - it was great! We were warmly greeted by a kind lady behind the bar which had lots of ale, lager & cider choices. We ordered the daily special with a drink which for £12 was great value. The Cod & Chips and Scampi were exactly what you’d expect from a country town pub grub - well worth the money. The desert of STP was also lush. We’d definitely recommend this pub for a great quality and great value midweek lunch. We’ll come back for Sunday Lunch soon.

I am thrilled that you are getting back up and running. I've had so many relaxed and friendly hours in the cafe with friends that I am looking forward to more accompanied by a fab nut roast and side salads fit for a queen. Airy and plenty of space (unlike other cafes that cram as many in as they can) so it feels very Covid safe even without have to make big changes.

Nice enough pub. The landlord is a bit grumpy. Cosy atmosphere with the log burner. They have different mobile take away's that park outside where you can buy your food and eat in the pub too.
