The Stag and Hounds in Melton

Charming pub offering distinctly superior steak and chips, and a variety of burgers. Several cuts of steak were available. Our rump steaks were tender and well-flavoured, cooked accurately to medium rare as requested. Very thick cut chips were beautifully chunky and crispy, with fluffy potato inside. A smooth Malbec was available to go with them. For meat eaters only.

What a wonderful little pub. We stayed close to the pub based on previous reviews and were in the area for a birthday weekend break and a pie making day! However, dinner at the Stag & Hounds was a revelation. We had been told by our accommodation host that the menu was restricted but still good. As it was walking distance we were always going to go there anyway. It is no exaggeration to say that the food was phenomenal. I had garlic prawns and they were incredible. I have eaten a lot of prawns over the years but didn't realise until this meal that there was a perfect way to cook them. These were beautifully prepared, still very slightly firm but then melt in the mouth succulent in an unctuous garlic butter. My only complaint being that I would happily still be eating them now. I shouldn't have been too sorry to finish the prawns because my main course was the 12oz ribeye, medium rare, stilton sauce. Wow! Absolutely delicious. The knife fell through the meat, which was of course cooked to perfection, and the deep rich taste of quality beef was immediately there with the first bite. The sauce and chunky chips were great but I would have been just as happy with just a plate of steak. Easily the best steak I have had in a very very long time. Simple food cooked incredibly well. All washed down with a couple of pints of Vixen. We were only incidentally in the area for the most convenient rural accommodation but this memorable dinner means we are certain to try to get back again. Thank you.

Superb dinner as always. You do need to book to get in but the food is amazing. Local beers on tap. Dom the chef manages to create and serve an astonishing number of people from his kitchen. I've heard the menu is changing but very much hope it keeps the charm it always had. It's been our "special" dinner place near Melton Mowbray for a good three years now.

We visited last night and to say that the food was amateurish would be a gross understatement. Our starter of beetroot with goats cheese, black olives and linseed comprised 3 or 4 lumps of gold and red beetroot (they had definitely not been cut with a knife), 2 or 3 thin slices of chioggia and gold beetroot, a few sad micro leaves, some chopped black olives, 4 tiny pieces of rind on goats cheese and some linseed scattered on the plate. There was no dressing of any kind. Our main course was Hake with charred little gem lettuce, new potatoes and a champagne caviar sauce. The fish was cooked well although I remain to be convinced that it was Hake and seemed more like Cod. It was accompanied by half a little gem that had been shown the griddle pan, 3 thick slices of a small new potato and about a tablespoon of very thin cream with some lumpfish and salmon roe. A pint of bitter and 3 x 175ml glasses of white wine - £94.00. Interestingly I overhead a waitress talking to the diners on the next table saying that the pub had been for sale but a sale had fallen through so they were going to continue, but changing the days when serving food to Tuesday to Saturday, no Sunday lunches and would be concentrating more on burgers, hotdogs and steaks although it would be the same chef.

Great local pub that dies a fantastic Sunday lunch & great value mid week food. Cooking is as close to a star as you can get without holding one. Why settle for second best when you can eat here.

We have eaten at the Stag & Hounds many times and have always been greeted by friendly and professional staff, cosy pub interior and outstanding food. We recently came for our Valentines meal and this was no different. We started with the delicious velouté which was so light and packed with flavour, then shared the sirloin (cooked perfectly rare) with chips (the best chips ever), garlic mushrooms and peppercorn sauce, we just about managed to squeeze in the eclair for dessert. Absolutely fantastic evening as always!

Misleading website, don't get fooled. Drove here on Sunday expecting it to be open for food from 1 till four as stated on the website, only to be told food is only served to advance reservations. However, there's absolutely no mention of reservations on the website and nowhere to book online. Make sure you pop in or phone a few days ahead to reserve a table if you want to eat. Won't get fooled again.

We visited for the first time yesterday for Sunday Lunch with friends. We all thought it was great food in a lovely village pub. Nice atmosphere and the food was excellent. Staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely return.

We went for Sunday lunch on spec. We were served drinks, started a tab and were told somebody would come and take our order. Nobody came. After a while, when we enquired, we were told they were fully booked despite there being empty tables. Very poor service.

We are on holiday and staying in Burrough on the Hill which is a beautiful village with the Stag and Hounds at its centre. We’d heard great things about the food here and it certainly didn’t disappoint!! The service was amazing, staff were so friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. The food was all delicious particularly the steaks which were cooked to perfection. The whole pub was cosy, relaxed and welcoming and we even able to bring our dog! For the high standard of food the price was great value for money. Thanks Dom and team for a great night!

We had an outstanding Sunday lunch here at the weekend. Everything was perfect, from the pretty, cosy dining room to the lovely waitresses who served us. The food was perfect too, my friend had the scallop starter, I had the ham hock terrine. For the main we both had the beef - melt in the mouth with home cooked Yorkshires, accompanied with delicious sides of crunchy roast potatoes, roasted carrots, cauliflower cheese and fresh broccoli and a jug of gravy. We `reluctantly’ squeezed in pudding as they had Sticky Toffee Pudding. Now we are 2 ladies who LOVE this dessert, and I can honestly say it’s one of the best we’ve ever had. Lashings of toffee sauce and home-made ice cream. I’m already looking forward to our next visit.

Excellent Sunday lunch at this cosy country pub. Delicious starters and the chicken and beef mains were a joy. The chips are the best I’ve tasted anywhere.

We were very disappointed when visiting for Sunday lunch. If you want to sit in a restaurant within arms length of dogs then you will be fine ! The food is very expensive for what it is and not a nice ambience and not particularly nice inside the pub. We are more than happy to pay for high quality food but this wasn’t and we were very disappointed and will never return. We are dog lovers but to eat in a restaurant right next to roaming dogs isn’t very satisfying

A wrote an unfavourable review earlier in the year. Our meal was poor and not worth the money. Disappointing too, as we had recommended the venue to friends. We had a superb lunch recently, along with good wines. Do Go Too!

We’re becoming regular visitors to the Stag & Hounds and have yet to be disappointed. The staff are friendly and attentive and the food is excellent and good value for this standard of cuisine. Today we visited as a party of 7 and enjoyed the Sunday lunch menu. The roast beef, belly pork and sea trout were all fantastic and the plentiful veg and roasties were delicious. The tonka bean parfait was superb and sticky toffee a delight. Many thanks, we’ll be back soon.
