The Stag in Epping Forest

Just had a roast lamb and all the trimmings and added a cauliflower cheese. Absolutely delicious.!!! I'm not one to waste food but only just managed to eat it all. Freidly staff. Dog friendly pub. Lots of outside seating. Try it. You won't be disappointed.

Couldn’t get served. All cared about was the locals. Queued for half hour for couple drinks then had to leave. Won’t be back any time soon with my family or friends.

Love this place..we visited on Sunday for a Sunday roast.they have a new chef and the food was delicious. The staff are friendly and helpful..dog friendly and a lovely outside garden for families. Would recommend.

My husband & I had a great evening in the Stag pub. The atmosphere and the staff were terrific. We had the pie & mash which was excellent. This is a fantastic local pub.

The Stag Pub held my sister surprise baby shower. It was a great atmosphere and the staff was great a help throughout the day and the lead up to the event. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The food was great and happily accommodated to dietary requirements. Thank you so much for an amazing afternoon.

Great little pub with a huge garden and children play park. Occasionally has music and monthly quiz night. Open fire, friendly staff and guests,dog friendly too . Pie n mash on a Thursday,sells out quickly.sunday roasts and a good pub grub menu too. Large car park,.guest beers changed regularly.

We ate here before going on the Christmas train at Ongar. Had a lovely meal, two of us had scampi and chips and two had pie n mash, all very nice, well cooked and nice and hot. Lovely proper pub with proper no nonsense pub food. Owners were very friendly and chatting. Will definitely visit again.

Amazing pub, We booked for our annual family Christmas meal 20+ of us including children. The owners and staff could not do more for you, the food and service was amazing. We have an individual who is gluten free and another vegetarian who they happily catered. Even offered food not being served that day. I can’t thank you all enough for a lovely day and being able to relax and enjoy our meals.

Lured in from passing beforehand by the kids playground we thought we would give this pub a go as it would occupy my 3 1/2 year old. SO GLAD we stopped in! What a fantastic pub. Food absolutely delicious & staff warm & friendly. Portions size was huge & we could tell it was fresh. Smothered chicken had plenty of bbq sauce & cheese. My husbands Stag Burger was delicious aswell! Very impressed. We will be back

Have found this pub average at best, We used this pub under previous landlords/owners and everything was what you would expect from a country pub we travel to Essex frequently and always try to stop off at lunch times for something to eat and drink on the previous few occasions we have been the pub here always been closed we have held off leaving a review as thought the new landlords /owners the benefit of the doubt but we thought we would try again today and was pleased to see the car park half full and open! As we tried to enter it was soon apparent the pub was holding a private function and didn’t feel it acceptable we walked in for food and drinks with it being obvious it was a wake a simple closed for private function on the front door would have taken minutes to do.

Had a really lovely lunch here today. Food was very good and reasonably priced. First time here but won’t be the last Looks from the reviews that the Sunday lunch is worth going for

Living in Sussex we had driven up in the morning to watch our grandson play rugby in Chelmsford, i had suggested that we go for a roast afterwards. Booked by my son in advance just to make sure we would get a table the roast was amazing , with 2 kids and a toddler in tow we could not have felt more welcome. Kids were offered food other than a roast, but both opted for 1/2 chicken breast with all the trimmings which went down very well. The adults had either Beef and Lamb everyone was more than happy with their plate, with a plethora of veg as well as the yorkshire and the amazing roast potatoes! Of course we just about had room for a dessert with a good choice again, cannot fault anything. This will i am sure become a family favourite and with a large play area outside everyone is kept happy

Visiting the local area & came across this pub & stopped to see if they were serving food ( Sunday Lunchtime ) we were quickly seated & served a lovely , big portion of Lamb & Beef Sunday Roast . Very tasty & all the staff were very friendly , welcoming & chatty . Would recommend .

I’m a very fussy eater and must say I find it very difficult to find a good veggie roast and I’m happy to say I found the best veggie roast ever at The Stag! Absolutely delicious!!! The staff were friendly, the pub was cozy, I felt very comfortable there and I can’t wait to go back. Definitely recommend. Hats off to the staff there!

I was advised by friends and family to visit the stag to try their take on Sunday roast. I was really lucky to meet Luke their new in house chef, very friendly and informative. It was nice that he took the time to present himself, there was no hiding in the kitchen. The meat was cooked to perfection and the Yorkshire puddings were magical. I will definitely visit again, and I would highly recommend this warm and friendly establishment. Thanks The Stag

Absolutely incredible The Stag: proper Sunday Roast with all the trimmings while visiting Essex for a day trip!! Chris and his staff will make sure you are well taken care. Cos I was the designated driver wasn’t able to drink 🍺 but as proper British pub options are immensely!! Highly recommend and will deffo return! Makes no sense to me that they dont serve food after 6pm on a Saturday night . Why dont you update your website with new hours?

Impromptu stop as we were heading to another pub, had a great lunch with excellent food and service while sitting out in the garden. Minted lamb burger with chips I couldn’t fault and the good lady had scampi with chips and they happily swapped the mushy peas for garden peas. Happy with the music playing in the background.

Superb food, so much roast beef and so very lean, everything on my roast was gorgeous. To finish off with a scrummy Begium waffle. Service by Amy wonderful and compliments to Chef Floyd - would very much recommend as a quaint, friendly, atmospheric, lovely family pub.

I think we’ve found our new favourite roast and a great midway point to meet family! Quite a last minute impromptu phone call and we were squeezed in for a Sunday Roast. Our greeting was warm and friendly and this continued with the service throughout. The food was sublime, definitely the best roast we’ve had in a long time. Just trying to find another weekend when everyone’s off work to meet in the middle again!

Very family friendly with lots of outside space. Food was excellent especially mixed platter for sharing.

We stopped off quite by chance, and had a great time, the staff were friendly, and the food really good. My wife had the burger and chips and the rest of us shared two portions of chips, my Wife loved the burger and the chips were great (you cant go wrong reqlly, can you), the drinks are well priced and the facilities clean, well worth the visit. Use to always go to this pub when I was younger and was always lovely went there Christmas Eve and it was awful! When we walking in we was given dirty looks from the lady behind the bar, when asked if we could leave our bag while we moved away from the pool table we was told it would be fine because it’s cheap and worthless anyway. For the rest of the night was made to feel very unwelcome and could tell it was a regular pub not one to go if you’ve never ever been AWFUL

I visited for Sunday lunch. Very welcoming staff as I entered. I had the beef for my roast and it was excellent. Large portion. Really enjoyable and will certainly return again.

We visited lunch with an elderly aunt, having been unable to get in at our first choice for lunch and so very hungry. The pub was very quiet but the welcome from the young barmaid was friendly and helpful, with a decent choice of traditional 'pub' meals on offer - we had scampi, chips and peas which was perfectly fine and our aunt chose lasagne which she really enjoyed. Good service, though the atmosphere was a bit lacking.

4 of us called in by chance after a 6 mile walk. Excellent staff, very good friendly service. 2 of us had pie and mash which was very good.

Regretfully not as good as last time, and that was only average. It was definitely chilly in the bar and there was no fire. We ordered two steak and kidney pudding with peas mash and gravy. These were delivered within 20 minutes and looked appetizing on the plate.However, the pastry was very hard and the filling was full of gristle and for £12.95 didn't represent value at all. On top of that, they didn't have any Colemans mustard.I have had better steak puddings in a greasy spoon for half the cost and only a few miles from The Stag. The service was good and the chef did apologise but I will not return.

Came here on the off chance with a group of work mates, due to working in the area. Welcoming, funny bar staff, absolutely spotless pub.

Come down here with my brother every now and then, bar staff are lovely especially Megan and Pippa. Brilliant service even better beer, love the juke box providing a personalised experience for anyone. Haven’t eaten here many times but when I have I haven’t been disappointed - proper pub grub! Cannot recommend enough if your in Ongar definately worth a visit!!!

I stumbled across the pub and was pleased to see a home cooked sign outside as I had been working rain al day,I asked for a menu the young lady typing on the phone showed me a board with a small collection of food,I ordered a chicken and bacon sandwich at £6 pound I expected a grilled chicken and freshly cooked sarnie,they served me bad bread and in between it could only be described as a load of paste that had come out of a container,I couldn’t eat it,the place is a dive,will not stay open long,avoid if you like your health!!

I came in with my wife and daughter. We were absolutely shocked to see the young barmaid (who I later found out is related to the owner) was very inappropriately dressed for the job she was doing. I was embarrassed to approach her. The stag was never like this.. such a shame.. the place only had some male drinkers in their.... need I say more? First impressions are important. Clearly the stag are unprofessional

After visiting here previously, we where very sad in the food and cleanliness of the outside area. The pub seems to be run by young women ,one show more of her body than was really descent .I may an older person but to me there was to much flesh exposed,I expect to see that on a beach not a pub.After ordering our usual j20,s I selected a beefburger and chips and Trevor selected the quiche and chips. What a let down I small slice of quiche chips and a bit of salad my burger very dry as it was overdone with some small onion rings chips and salad.The table had not been wiped down, it was covered in cigarette ash,We are smokers but this was very poor We will not be going back again.

We had just returned from holiday and had very little in the house. Decided to o out for Sunday Roast and came across the The Stag. What was put before us I could manage but it was too much for my wife. The proprietor said if we came again I should ask for a child's portion for my wife. The food was of high quality.

Arrived after long journey, had been looking for somewhere to grab a quick bite before travelling on. On entering the pub there were two young women talking to an older gentleman. After a bit one, who was obviously the server asked what we would like and my husband asked if they were serving food. The notice outside said they were but as it was so empty we thought we should enquire. The other girl sat with the customer and pecking away on her mobile phone said yes food was being served but she had no eggs! I ordered chicken and chips and my husband curry Be under no illusion this is all food bought in frozen. Except eggs which she didn't have or couldn't cook. My husbands rice and curry was nicely presented and cooked through. My chicken and chips looked tasty but was frozen and raw in the middle. I walked back in the pub , we were sat in the garden, and asked for it to be cooked properly. This took 20 minutes, we had both finished our drinks and my husband had finished his meal. My chicken had been seriously over cooked and so very dry. I thought I might have been offered a drink while I waited but no. Please do not visit this place

Spontaneous visit. Friendly bar staff. Unfortunately poor quality food. 6.00 for burger. 3.00 extra for chips..small . Dry stale bun..wasnt expecting a gourmet meal. But was disappointed. Manageress gave full refund..

We have been to this Pub many times in the past and it’s always been good, we returned to have something to eat and a couple of drinks and it just didn’t seem the same. The toilets were filthy with water all over the floor which was such a big turn off we decided not to stay, we couldn’t see the friendly staff that were there before so could only presume it’s under new management. We made a quick exit

Arrived at the pub just before 1 on a Saturday to meet friends for lunch. Upon arrival asked if they were serving food today and was told they would be about 2pm. Got drinks and sat down. When the rest of the party arrived we were then told that there wouldn’t be any food as staff members were off sick. It would have been nice to be told this before the rest of the party ordered drinks. We were the only people in the pub! Left to go for food elsewhere. No apology from staff. Wouldn’t bother going back.

Stopped in for lunch with the family today. As we entered we saw a sign promising that kids eat for just £1 for every main meal purchased. ‘Great’ we thought ‘we have 2 under 6 with us’. First the bar staff needed to check that there was food left in the kitchen (it was 1:30!). Having been told, yes we were advised only roast was available on a Sunday. Fine, that’s what we fancied so we ordered 3 x adult meals and two tiny portions for our ‘sparrow appetited’ little ones. We were then charged full price. When I queried the special offer on the blackboard by the main entrance, I was told that the offer was only available with a main meal. I explained that we had ordered and were paying for 3 adult portions. It was explained to me (as though I were stupid) that main meals were on the main menu only! Erm, we were informed that the main menu wasn’t available on a Sunday and the sign did not clarify this. When I explained that this wasn’t clear, the sign was brought in and displayed to me ‘it says main meal, see?’ Yes, but it doesn’t say from the main menu and besides, the main menu isn’t available today, so why is the sign outside?

Arriving to the very warm welcome on a chilly late autumn day. Wonderful Sunday roast - brilliant. A manly portion served between 12 noon and 3pm. Suggested best to reserve due to good demand. The staff and customers both added to the great vibe. Will defo visit again, thou we won't always see the lovely well kept horse and carts tied up outside to make for a proper country pub visit. Décor amazing with a lot of old/rustic items scattered among the furnishings. Would recommend.

Had a great meal in the stag on tues night nice selection of starters . I had sirloin steak my wife had mussels both were very nice very friendly landlady made us feel very welcome nice clean and bright pub looking forward to going back and sampling more from the menu .

Visited here for a meal out. The menu looked promising at first glance - quite limited but this is often a sign of high quality food to come. Sadly this was not the case. We ordered the whitebait and the breaded Camembert to start but...

Un verdadero fuego en un día frío es siempre un plus en mi libro y nos dieron una cálida bienvenida de la señora de detrás de la barra. Pedimos una lasaña de vegetales y pollo panini que venía con una pequeña ensalada y patatas fritas....

Nos detendremos para un bocado rápido la comida era buena, pero era frío en el pub había bastante gente y no ofrece para pensionistas a la hora del almuerzo.

Always good pub food, good hearty portions a nice environment lots of parking and large garden for the kids, nice mix of ales and beers def worth a visit, Sunday lunch is good and probably best value in Ongar

We have visited many years ago & thought we would give it another try.My mum had lasagna. The first one was cold in the middle. We returned it for another one but this time it was incredible oily & over done. The veg was also overdone.My meal was ok.Free parking, inside & outside seating, outdoor play area, they sell jarred pickled food.

The weather was appalling with rain bucketing down. Walking through the door of The Stag was like walking into an oasis of warmth with a beaming smile from the barmaid.We ordered lamb shank and a vegetable lasagne. The lasagne came with a bowl of the most delicious chips that were red hot and as crispy as you could wish for. The lasagne was also hot with masses of cheese topping that was soft and gooey enough to dip your chips into. There was also a side salad that made the meal complete. There was also a roaring log fire to complete the welcoming ambience and all for a very reasonable price.Definitely recommended.

Excellent service. I had Beef cop iousbeef and veg verygood.Wife has Alxheimers and eats very little.She had a small portion of lamb etc,As a sweet I had a crumble which ws excellent. Wife had 1 scoop of ice cream. Two large Merlot. Received the bill, And they only charged £3-00nfor the Wife.s mainI was surprised at the reduction.Never happened before.Much appreciated.

One of the best pubs in Ongar. Good choice of beer and decent food- although offered at limited times. Great to sit in the garden this time of year. Interior is modern and welcoming. Service was quick and pleasant. We live locally and this will always be our number one choice

After visiting the outdoor market at north weald airfield. We decided to revisit the Stag for lunch.I had the chicken dish and my partner Trevor had the fish cakes with mash potatoes. My roast half chicken with chips and peas. we both had J20s to drink with it.We decided to sit outside as it was a warm day and the pub has a nice garden to sit in,a super meal and nice surroundings.

Food is o.k. and also service. Chilli was good also scampi. sweets also o.k..reasonably priced. Good car park. No French Wines.Second visit.

We popped into The Stag for a late lunch after visiting Clue HQ in Brentwood. We got there just before the kitchen was closing at 2pm on Saturday but the guy was very friendly and told us we could still order. I wasn't that hungry so just ordered chips and they were happy to do a plain salad for me, even though it wasn't on the menu. My mates got the lasagna and chicken and we're all pleased with the portions. Chips were nice and chunky and it was all reasonably priced. The pub itself was clean and the toilets were also decent. The guy serving us was really nice and helpful and I would definitely recommend visiting this pub.

Passing This Pub we thought we would stop for lunch, never been to this place before but the welcome was lovely, by staff and locals.I ordered gammon steak was amazed by the thickness with a lightly fried egg with pineapple on tip, so tasty followed by a desert, my husband had Cod and chips the fish again was big plenty of flesh, sadly they are closing on the 13 - 21 for a week to decorate, can't wait to go back I would fully recommend it.

Popped in for a roast today with friends. We received great service and the food wash lovely and fresh. Nice open fire and jars of home made pickles for sale.

Fantastic Pub,situated on the road heading out of Ongar, and going towards Brentwood. I have visited here on a couple of occasions, very friendly staff,and regulars. Very clean pub,toilets & Beer Garden.Facilities include,Restaurant area,Milestones in Music Digital Jukebox-play any top 40 hit going right back to 1952,and a nice Beer Garden with Children's Play area. Top marks in my book !!!.

We visited for a Monday lunch as a group of 13, we all ordered food on arrival and then enjoyed drinks. Food came out plate by plate, service was slow as last person served when most others had finished eating but all meals where piping hit and cooked fresh. Fish in batter was home done, as were curries, portion sizes very generous for the money, just needed to get food out quicker. Nice to be in so traditional pud.

Mums 90th birthday. Staff presented our cake and sang Happy birthday. Had faultless traditional Sunday lunch. Even the veggie nut loaf was moist and tasty. For the price we paid and no rush required ... Superb! Going again for Mother's Day if they can fit us in

Stopped on visiting relatives in ongar for a Sunday dinner and have been back on the odd night out with other half, great little country pub, not rowdy and great garden for kids! Would recommend!!

The landlords run a great although small venue outweighed by huge garden.what I like best is that locals and visitors young and old can mix without aggravation.local high street pubs are skanky and full of greebos. Well done guys.

Came in for drinks on Saturday night, our 1st visit. Lovely country pub with large and pretty beer garden. Nice selection of drinks and very friendly staff. Toilets spotless. Bought a selection of the charity pickles which are delicious. Will come back here and try the food when next in the area.

I went to the stag pub on my way home and it was not what I was expecting I was a bit disappointed but it was average overall

My husband and I thought we would try the Stag for a wedding anniversary lunch and a few drinks as it looks like a very large welcoming pub from the outside, how wrong could we be! walking in the doors, i was shocked at how small it was! there was no atmoshpere and was ready to walk out if it wasnt for the fact that we were starving and in need of some food. the food was ok, not great but not the worst ive had either. We will not be going back in there but this is more for the lack of atmoshpere and feeling like we were from another planet from the look that we we recieved from the "regular" customers.

Went to The Stag for lunch with two friends. I had not eaten there before though the other two had. Good wholesome food (steak and stilton pie) with new potatoes peas and carrots. Ample portions sensibly priced in clean and welcoming surroundings. Good range of beers. What more can you ask.

We had driven past this pub on a lot of occasion and decided to try it for lunch. What a lovely surprise. It was very clean and light inside with a lovely open fire and lots of personal touches around the place. They offered a nice selection of beers on tap. The staff were very helpful and couldn't do enough. We ordered the fish and chips , I had the plaice and my husband had the cod, both were excellent. Great outside eating area and good parking. We will definitely be visiting The Stag again.

Went for Sunday lunch with children, which turned out perfect. Nothing too fancy on the menu, but my roast lamb was tender and delicious while both the cod and scampi with chips were excellent. Staff were friendly and helpful, prices reasonable. The children really liked the play area in the beer garden, which would have been great to eat in with better weather. Decor is spare rather than pretentious, very clean with spotless loos. Not a place trying to be too special, but does a solid job of being a dependable place to eat. We will definitely go back.

Visited The Stag recently for supper. Friendly atmosphere and good menu selection. The staff were efficient. All in all a pleasant evening and enjoyable meal. Would recommend for a quiet meal out - perhaps after a run into the country. Good parking.

We virtually stumbled on this place, with a bit of help from the iPhone GPS system!We received a very warm welcome from the landlady who was very quick to serve, brought our drinks to the table and who had a pleasant personality.We had a light lunch and the food was excellent: generous portions, tasty and superb value.This is very much a regulars pub, but there was no sense of "a local place for local people".The meals were checked & we were asked if we needed more drinks or desserts.All in all, an excellent local pub that we can thoroughly recommend.

We visited the establishment last Wednesday 28th Nov, a group of 8 responsible adults and afterhaving a friendly bit of banter we imbibed 3 rounds of drinks in less than 2 hours spending nearly £80 on that visit.On the following night we once again called in against my sister in law wishes (the only local resident amongst us) to have a few drinks and a meal. Due to there being 9 of us and we wanted to sit in a group and eat together, we had the audacity to move 3 smaller tables together at the end of the bar.This table moving exercise was undertaken whilst my son bought a round of drinks from once again the friendly and welcoming barmaid. I might add there was only 4 or 5 people maximum in the pub at this time 5.30pm, we were informed that the kitchen did not open until 6pm so we sat and waited.The Manager (I presumed) was unhappy with the table moving and as we had the nerve to laugh and joke it became apparant he was uncomfortable so my sister asked him politely was he annoyed by our table moving, he said he was. We quickly drank up and left after ensuring all the chairs and tables were placed back in their original positions. I might add that we were not blocking any fire exit and all the tables where situated at the very end of the room.I find it hard to comprehend in this recession that an ignorant manager or owner could act in such a manner and turn away probaly £200 of business in an empty pub on a Thursday night.Needless to say when we are in the area again (to visit family) the Stag will definately be off our intinery. So if you want to eat, drink and be merry in Ongar the Stag is not the place to be!!

Visited this pub at the weekend as the menu was so extensive online when we arrived we were greeted with a much smaller menu with higher than average pub prices and only average food served up!

We had the opportunity to go to The Stag for a lunch and we sat in the garden,the food was average but presented nicely and the place was very clean,The staff were pleasant and helpful and we would definitely go there again
